Color problem - Hot & Cold areas

I have downloaded a trial version of Aperture 2 and have been familiarizing myself with its various new features. I played with the preference settings and now my photos are showing "hot" and "cold" areas even after I reset the sliders to 100% for hot and 0% for cold. I have moved the sliders to all possible positions to no avail.
Any suggestions?
Thanks

In your menu bar go to View->Highlight Hot & Cold Areas. Select it to remove the check mark and turn the feature off.

WHEN I CLICK ON THE HIGHLIGHT HOT & COLD AREAS,IN VIEW TO TURN IT ON.
EVERY PHOTO I GO TO ( IN ANY PROJECT OR ALBUM ,IT`S GOT THE HOT IN RED WHICH CAN BE ADJUSTED )
BUT THE WHOLE PHOTO, PHOTO`S GO BLUE WHICH MEANS I CAN NOT ADJUST THE COLD SPOTS.

Hopefully not telling you to suck eggs here but it might be worth watching a few of the tutorials that discuss image editing and adjustments, there are videos on all of the processes you need to understand in order to manage your highlights and shadows. Start at the top and work your way through them, made a world of difference for me.

Also you will find a plethora of information here, specifically a pdf on "performing adjustments"

Hope these help you to understand how to manage the highlights and shadows, hot and cold functions.

  • Hot and Cold area viewing confusing me...

    Hi Everyone,
I've been using Aperture 2 since it came and I'm liking the workflow and integration with the rest of OSX. Today I stumbled upon something confusing. I was playing with the display hot and cold areas option and was finding that when I measured the hot areas with the loupe, that the color values weren't actually blown out...
For example, I had a picture of a rose that when zoomed in, I could see the detail in the petals but was still being flagged as blown out. When I did a loupe rgb read on a 1x1 pixel point, I found that the red value was around 211...I thought that hot areas are 255?
Maybe I'm confusing what "hot" means. I've even seen cases where the master image is flagged as having more hot areas even though it is less saturated and exposure level is lower.
Can something be wrong with the hot/cold area function? Can anyone give it a try and see what kind of values they are seeing with the hot and cold area viewer?
    Thanks.

    Hi stjuste
re Maybe I'm confusing what "hot" means. I've even seen cases where the master image is flagged as having more hot areas even though it is less saturated and exposure level is lower.
Thought I would check. Used a pic of a dancer at night with firebrands. Pic looks good as I shot it.
Measured the "Hot Spot' at 255, and some others at a lower value. The manual says:
Images may occasionally have overly bright areas where color information about the
area is beyond the standard limits of the Aperture working color space. For example,
white areas in an image brightly lit with direct sunlight, or bright flashes off a water
surface, may be so bright that their color is outside the working color space. In addition,
images may occasionally have black areas where color information about the area is
below the standard limits of the working color space. Aperture can display these “hot”
and “cold” areas of an image with tints on the image to help you identify hot and cold
areas. You may be able to adjust these areas and recover highlight and shadow detail
identified by the hot and cold area overlays by changing the exposure, the recovery, the
black point, or the gamma setting of the image.
This maybe of help.. maybe not. Probably like you I set up the pics how I want them not what any program tells me.
Interesting though. I will do a bit more checking.

  • Toggle on "Highlight Hot and Cold Areas"

    Aloha all.
When ever I toggle on "Highlight Hot and Cold Areas" my image turns solid red. I know I must have a setting turned on or set too high but I can't figure it out? Anyone else with this problem? Solutions?
    Using Aperture 2.1

In Preferences->Appearance, see what the hot area display threshold is set to. It should be 97 or higher.

For the sake of clarity and to save people time, Todd is asking about the behaviour of the Patch tool when using it to repair the area next to the young lad's head.  Todd gets a blurred dark tone pretty much regardless of the options he uses.
IMO that's what I would expect to happen because of the close proximity of the other image elements i.e. the lad's neck and the strong lines of his shirt.  I would not choose to use the Patch tool in this situation.  Content Aware Fill makes a better stab at it.

  • Highlight hot and cold areas

When "Highlight hot and cold areas" is turned on I often get some blue outlines in a photo, but when I press "Z" (zoom) they disappear. What is going on?

Could be a number of reasons for this but nothing to worry about. You could try looking at the hot/cold threshold levels but you need to remember smaller images can't hold the same amount of data as large ones. Edge sharpening for example, on the large scale may contrast 10,000 pixels along a 1 inch line to the full size image. Now think what has to happen when the image is shown as a 7x5. Think of it in terms of Bit Depth. With 1 bit there is no grey area and choices have to be made about what to show. In this case it is not a perfect copy of the full size image. Allan

  • Turning of Shadow (Cold area)

I was one of the first buyers of Aperture when first introduced. I did not like many aspects of v. 1 (library, slow performance) so I migrated to Lightroom. When Aperture 2.0 was introduced, I downloaded the Trial and loved the new version so much, I purchased the upgrade.
One thing I do not like about v2.01 is I can not figure out how to leave on the blown Highlights but turn off the Shadow (cold) area. I just find the blue tint so distracting when adjusting white balance. Has anyone found a way to disable only the Shadow (cold areas)? Lightroom gives you the choice of leaving the shadow area turned off while having the Highlights on.
I have posted a comment about this in the Aperture feedback area.

  • Color problems in photoshop cs5 and bridge

Recently, whenever I open images in photoshop or view them in Bridge, they look desaturated. In Bridge, they load normal at first but after a couple of seconds, they become desaturated and I can't figure out what the problem is. I have all of the same color management settings as before, the only difference on my computer since the colors stopped working was that my computer installed windows updates. The images look fine when viewing them in the Windows viewer, and in other programs like ACDSee, etc. It only looks like this in Adobe programs. I checked in Bridge under Creative Suite color settings, and it is under North America General Purpose 2. In Photoshop, I checked color settings, and all of them are marked as convert to working rgb, cmyk, etc. Any suggestions?

The monitor color profile tells Photoshop and the other color managed programs how your monitor displays colors. Color profile files are installed by putting them in C:\Windows\System32\spool\drivers\color. Then to assign or confirm a color profile for your monitor, you use the Color Management control panel. Under the Devices tab  when 'Use my settings for this device" is checked, the color profile currently in used is the one which name ends with (default). For example 'Dell U2410 color Profile, D650 (default)'.
You can download the color profile for you monitor from here http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?releaseid=R279694&formatcnt=0&libi d=0&fileid=413637
    http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?releaseid=R279694&formatcnt=0&libi d=0&fileid=413637
it downloads a .exe file which is simply a decompressor like .zip files. Run it, and in the folder you will find a file with the name DELL-U2410.icm - his is your monitor color profile from Dell. However most likely Windows has already installed it for you.
Now, given  your situation, you may have these eventual problems.
    First problem.
Your monitor is a wide gamut monitor 102% of NTSC and Windows defaults at sRGB which is about 70% fo NTSC. NTSC is a color space representing the visible spectrum and is used in monitor specs for measuring the gamut.
Assuming that for some time you didn't use a color profile which more closely represents your monitor, Photoshop was displaying images on your wide gamut monitor using the default sRGB color profile which represent standard gamut sRGB monitors and this is very different from yours. Said in other words you were seeing one thing on your monitor while Photoshop was assuming it is another thing. This becomes a problem when you convert from one color space to another and display or reproduce the image on other devices, and in your case when monitor profile is changed to a very different one. To fix this you have to assign your correct monitor profile to the images that were created with the wrong profile and then convert to a common color space like sRGB, AdobeRGB, etc. Assign and Convert to profiles are in the Edit menu.
    Second problem.
The color profile from Dell may not be representing correctly how your monitor displays colors. Dell creates a profile that is not measured to your particular unit but for what they assume is an average representation of the monitor's model. Using it, you depend entirely on luck. I have u2711 and I was very unlucky. If you are curious you can study my case which may be also very educational for you and will be able to see clearly the difference between the colors of my monitor and those the Dell color profile represents. Follow the same instructions above for downloading the color profile for your monitor but download the one for u2711 from here
    http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?releaseid=R247058&formatcnt=1&libi d=0&fileid=365277
then go to that web site from your link http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/articles/icc_profiles.htm and download my color profile that I'm sharing there. It is 'Dell U2711 Spyder 3 + Color Eyes DP   User' once you have the color profiles files on you computer, go to this site http://www.iccview.de/content/view/3/7/lang,en/  , upload my monitor profile and the one from Dell and compare. That web site will give a 3D plot of two color spaces in a 3D viewer that you can navigate to see it from all sides (using the Ctrl, Shift navigates faster). The difference that you see made it impossible to create even simple images for the web using Photoshop. I convert from AdobeRGB to sRGB and when Photshop assumes that my monitor displays colors the way they are described in the Dell's profile, all detail in the shadows is eliminated and my images look like crap. I even got better results from creating a profile using this free software http://www.calibrize.com/ it uses the so call eyeometer relying on your eyes for feedback and although the colors were noticeably off, at least the shadow detail was preserved.
    Hope that helps

  • A color problem in Apple's publishing App

I was wondering if you could help me with this problem,I really need some help, and here it is:
There is a Color problem in Mac publishing applications like Pages and Keynote, including iBooks Author, which really confuse me a lot。
When you use a certain color space(sRGB IEC61966-2.1 in this case)to create some colors with Apps like Illustrator CS6,Indesign CS6 & Photoshop CS6 etc. ,they look totally fine。BUT when you use iBooks Author (V2.0)to create the very same color with the very same color space, colors still look fine in the color panel, and here comes the problem:they look totally lousy in the actual document!!In fact, they look much lighter and faded。(See Image 1&2)
    Above:Image 1
    Above:Image 2
And this is also terrible with photos you import。(See Image 3)
    Above:Image 3
Please tell me what I can do to solve this problem。I know maybe this is some sort of “basic” and “general” knowledge, but I really need your help。And I can't thank you enough if you can provide some effective solutions。

As far as I can see,  the colour pallet and how colours are seen in any app on YOUR machine will depend on the computers System Preferences>Displays>Colour - choose your preferred setting.
I suggest first that you ensure that your colour profile settings are the same ( as your computer)  in whatever Adobe application or in fact any outside image processor you use.
Creating or using a colour profile in Adobe and having a different profile on your system - will tend  to  give different colour hues.
A point also to remember is whatever you set up and is  transferred to your product... when seen on an iPad may well be totally different again due to peculiarities and contrast / brighness setting of the iPad user.

  • Pavilion gv laptop colors on monitor color problem

I'm having color problems on my laptop. While the colors on my screen aren't terrible, most of the color/textures appear washed out and muted in comparison to other laptops I own. I've tried adjusting the brightness and calibrating the colors but it didn't fix the problem. I'm not sure what the problem could be. Thank you for your help.

    Hey @crawford810 ,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand the colours on your notebook look muted.
Could you please tell me which notebook model you have and the installed operating system? For information on finding your product and model numbers click here: How Do I Find My Model Number or Product Number? To see which version of Windows you are using click here: Which Windows operating system am I running?
For an issue like this you will want to test an external monitor to see if the issue is coming from the display, the GPU, or from Windows.
You will want to make sure your GPU and BIOS are up to date. You can download the most recent drivers and BIOS at the HP - Drivers & Downloads website.
I look forward to your reply!

  • ADC 30" color problems

I have a newer 30" display.. and have noticed recently that the colors are very inaccurate.. I have a deep pink or purple hue off the middle-left; and a brighter yellow spot dead center, then back to a pink hue off middle-right. What's up.. I thought this was a $2000 pro-usable monitor? We use it for photography & videography post production work. We recently bought a HP monitor for $600 and the colors across the monitor are 100% accurate (sheesh).
So here's my question.. is this normal behavior for the 30"ADC or do I have a lemon that needs to be fixed?

i've got two new 30 inchers and they don't exhibit that problem. mine are absolutely perfect, gorgeous, good accurate color, especially when calibrated.

  • Color problem in 8.0.1

Having not had much luck with V9 I'm back at 8.0.1 on an Intel iMac running 10.4.11.
I have created pages which contain Layout Grids with a background color. It appears they defaulted to being created as tables. I would like to change them to CSS, but can't because the background color shifts. It's still specified as the same, but appears subtly different; both in GoLive and when the page is previewed in browsers.
This is a big problem because there are graphic elements which have the same background color and must match. Plus I of course want the color I specified.
Is there a fix for this? Don't recall this as a problem in the past.

In the page which displays as intended, the background colour is set in the table element:
    bgcolor="#fffce1"
In the CSS "grid" version it is set in the inline CSS for the main div for the grid, and it is not at all the same:
    background-color:#ffe
That is not the same colour.
This is a truncation bug -- as I recall; I no longer have access to the bug database to verify that -- where GoLive reduces the colour to the short form when it should not in layout grid colour settings. I *think* there may be some posts I made previously on this issue which would still turn up in a forum search; not sure.
    1. Uncheck the background colour check box in the Layout Grid inspector to remove the colour.
    2. Set the background colour for page instead of the layout grid.
If that isn't feasible, you can add an ID to the layout grid's div element and then use the CSS editor to set the background colour instead of the inspector. That will avoid the bug.

  • Color problems: greys seem to be white...

    Hello-
I am having some very strange color issues that seem to pop up in a number of different areas across my system. Please stay with my while i try to explain:
    1) I notice that my iChat menu bar icon no longer existed when I wasn't signed on. The space that the icon takes up is blank, and when I click on it brings up the iChat menu as it should. I think it should be a light gray color when I'm not signed on. When I do sigh on, it goes to black and is totally visible. In this case, a light gray isn't displayed at all.
    2) When I select windows of applications, i think the very top bar where the title of the window resides should get a little darker, signifying that it is the active window. I distinctly remember this happening on my mac a while ago. I think that should also happen to a few of the color elements on the selected page as well (light colors should get a little darker and appear as they were meant to be. This just doesn't happen. It appears that if I have a window selected or not, it is always the same dull color, and the finer lines, color shading, and gray areas all seem way too light and indistinguishable, or downright invisible (for instance, the Search Forums text in the upper right of this screed should have a light blue background; it displays as white on my computer).
3)Spreadsheet programs no longer display grid lines. This happens in all the spreadsheet programs i have, even after i force them all to display grid-lines. The strangest part is that when i take another window and drag it over a a non selected spreadsheet window, the shadow created by the top window displays the gird lines in that tiny area. I assume that meant they are there, but somehow a switch is not working in the UI that fails to display this stuff when it should (ie when the windows are selected). I also notice that the missing detail I referred to in item 2 appears when i drag windows over them as well.
    4) When i start up my mac, the background picture comes up in great color. A few seconds after it comes up, it gets dark and the color profile switches very drastically as the desktop icons become visible.
I noticed all of these things as I started to poke around a little. I really hope they are all unified, but I have no idea.
Thanks in advance for your help. I really appreciate it.
    Ben

What can I say other than that my problem is completely fixed. I can't tell you how much I appreciate your rapid, clear, and correct response.
Hope others who may have similar issues will find this are able to benefit.
    Thanks again!
