Color profile for Viewer and Canvas?

I've noticed that the color of the video in the FCPro 4.5 Viewer and Canvas looks absolutely nothing like the color when I output to DVD or QuickTime movie. (The video in FCPro seems to be much darker.) Is there a way to make the Viewer and Canvas look more analagous to what I'm going to get on final output?
Thanks.

Nope. Computer monitors colors have such a wide range that they are very unreliable. This is why it is best to hook up a TV, or better yet a properly calibrated NTSC Monitor (the latter only if you are producing professional video).
#8 External Monitor Viewing.
Shane's Stock Answer #8:
A simple path is mac > firewire > camera or deck > rca cables > tv
Then start up your camera and tv, then open fcp.
Then go View > External video > all frames
Video playback should be Apple firewire NTSC (If you are using an NTSC set)
Audio playback should be Audio follows Video
Techinially, this should send synched video to your TV
If for some reason you can't view your timeline on your external monitor, there are a few things to try:
1) Make sure that the camera/deck is connected and powered on BEFORE you open FCP.
2) In the Final Cut Pro menu select AUDIO/VIDEO Preferences and make sure your signal is being sent out thru Firewire DV.
3) Go to the menu and select VIEW>EXTERNAL>ALL FRAMES.
4) Click in the % box above the image and select FIT TO WINDOW.
5) Go to VIEW->refresh A/V devices
6) Make sure the Log & Capture window is closed
If you want it to play in both the canvas and the external monitor you need to go to the FINAL CUT PRO menu and select AUDIO/VIDIO settings and make sure MIRROR ON DESKTOP is selected under the PLAYBACK OUTPUT section

  • Color settings in viewer and canvas?

Have been experimenting with some custom presets of the Canon XH A1.
After importing in FCP the footage seemed very colorful -- mostly much warmer.
Played the same clips in quicktime and they looked completely different, much more nuanced, natural and as intended.
Is there a way to change the color settings of the viewer and the canvas in FCP?
    thanks

#49 - Quicktime movie lighter than what I see in FCP.
Shane's Stock Answer #49 - Why is the Quicktime Movie I made much lighter than what I see in my timeline in FCP?
Because it is designed to be bright enough to be seen on most monitors, some that might be too dark. But, if you want to see the same image you see in your FCP timeline, just open Quicktime, and in the Quicktime Player's preferences window under the General tab you can choose to Enable Final Cut Studio color compatibility.

  • Color profiles for web and print

    Hi,
I am editing photos from my DSLR. They were shot as jpg in Adobe RGB. I am editing photos for both web and print at the moment and was wondering if there is a way to do that so that I would be able to edit for both simultaneously in the Photoshop process.
Here are the details for what I normally do:
For print, I would work photos over in AdobeRGB while the Proofing option is set to Working CMYK (usually SWOP, depending on what printer I use). Then I'd flatten the artwork, resize and sharpen, and change the color mode to CMYK, save as TIFF.
For web, I usually edit while RGB Color Settings are set to sRGB IEC61966-2.1, and Proofing is set to Monitor RGB. I flatten, resize and sharpen, and Save for Web.
Is there any way I can edit a single photo (shot in Adobe RGB) so that they can be used for BOTH print and web? I know CMYK vs. RGB would mean that they would end up looking different in the end, but is there any way I can have a single Photoshop file for a photo and go through the necessary steps to make it ready for print and for web... or is it that due to color profiles and proofing options, there's nothing I can do but to edit each photo twice?
Thanks in advance to anyone who might be able to help.

Thanks for the advice. I'll try that out.
I posted my second question before I read your response, but yes, it does seem the best choice to convert to sRGB when Saving for Web. And you say you place your .psd file into an InDesign document? Do you do that if you only wish to save as a pdf... what do you personally do when saving as TIFF for print?
I don't save Tiffs for print. I use PSDs. I don't ever give ID files with all linked files to the printer only PDFs. If i'm working on something like a coffee table book I would do the conversion in Photoshop. but most magazines and newspapers, CD covers, posters, brochures everything stays aRGB until I make the PDF.

  • After updating to 10.7.4, my second monitor lost its color profile, for Photoshop and Lightroom. I'm on a 2011 MBP with the AMD video chip

Has anyone else had this happen? Is Apple aware - how can I inform them of my issue - do I have to wait months and months till 10.7.5 comes out, for a solution?
    Thanks,

I have had the issue with a Snow Leopard but never with Lion.
Can you go to System Preferences>Displays>Color and select your profile.
I had made 3 profiles and they are all still there and my iMac is still using the same one I previously selected

You need to ask the printing service provider. Dealing with color totally depends on the printing process involved and of course the machines used.

  • Display Color Profile For iiyama HM903DT

I've just been given an iiyama HM903DT monitor but it doesn't want to play with my mac mini
The trouble is this:- If a turn on my mac with the screen powered on my machine creates a color profile for it (from monitor dcc information I suspect). That would be ok if the profile was correct but it's not. On some jpgs and tif files are massively over saturated (for example gingerbread man.tif) yet other jpegs and tifs are fine.
If I start up my mac without the screen turned on my mac defaults to "Display" for color and all is well.
I've check in Universal Access and 'Enhance Contrast' is set correctly, I've also tried using color-sync to no avail......
What can I do to stop this bug it's driving me nuts!!!

Me too. Snow leopard seems to ruin my 9CA3 screen because the color looks to be washed out.

  • Please help me find a color profile for Samsung 2343bwx

    Hi Everyone,
Im just trying to get started in the graphical design field, I just bought a Samsung 2343BWX Lcd monitor (i know I know TN isnt the best for graphical design but im not rich), the color profile that came with the monitor is defective and displays everythign in a deep yellow tint, Ive tried using samsungs Natural Color Pro monitor profiling software but it results in a really ughly profile that is too dark and has a blueish tint to it.
Samsung's support isnt much help (no sprise there) and I cant afford a spyder or eye-one hardware calibration tool at this point.
Does anyone have or know where I can get a good color profile for this monitor? You have no idea how much I would appriciate it.
Thank you in advance for your help
    All The Best

    You have a few choices....
    1.  Use the generic monitor profile supplied with your monitor, the one that came with it when you bought it.  This will be generic, and will not account for drift, and probably won't be all that accurate.  But, at least it should be in the general ballpark since it represents a cross section of a grouping of similar monitors.
    2.  Try one of the presets that came with your monitor. I don't know what presets or controls are offered with this monitor, but I would shoot for a color temp between 5000K and 5500K, a 2.2 gamma, and a reasonably dim brightness setting.
    3.  Find someone who can do a hardware/software calibration, either a friend, or someone who will do it for a fee.  This will get it right once (if they know what they are doing), but will not account for drift over the long term.
    4.  Search online and see if you can find some visual calibration target and do it by eyeball.  This is usually not easy to do, and probably won't be satisfactory, but you can give it a try.
    5.  Buy a calibration package and do it yourself.  You should probably calibrate an LCD monitor at least monthly (I do mine weekly).  This is the best way to go, at least if you are serious about accurate color.  And this doesn't guarantee that your monitor and print will match.  For that, you need to calibrate your printer for each type of paper you use, or rely on generic printer profiles.  Then, you have to make sure you set everything up properly and utilize all your profiles properly.  Sorry, but this is all part of the price you have to pay if you want good color. The fee involves money for the proper tools, education on how to use them, and experience in applying them properly.

  • FCE 4: Picture in Viewer and Canvas is too small

I'm still learning but the picture in my Viewer and Canvas don't show very well. They show up with 2 grey bars on the left and right of the picture. Above the picture it shows 71% instead of 100%. When I put to 100% the picture will be zoomed very big. I have no idea where's the problem but there must be something very wrong. Before i had crosslines in the viewer but this problem is solved. But how do i get the picture back to fullsize in the Viewer and Canvas?

Tom's right, if there isn't enough room for FCE to display the image full size in the window it scales it to fit. Make the windows larger, (for example put it on compositing view under window arrangement), and then choose scale to fit for each of the images.

  • Good Color Profiles for LED 24"?

Does anyone have any good color profiles for the 24" LED? I tried using one I really like on my MBP, but it looks completely different on the 24" LED. I don't really like the standard Cinema color profile - kinda light and washed out.
    Anyone?

Go to Colour Display options and choose Calibrate to change the settings?

  • I can't calibrate any color profile for my iMac's display!

I think I accidentally deleted the color profile for my iMac's display
and now it won't let me calibrate any profile! All the colors are bright and washed out.
When I go to the display>color preference panel I get an error sound whenever I click ANY color profile, and it doesn't load. When I click "calibrate" it gives me the message: "Can not calibrate the display. The factory profile for the display could not be found."
But I wasn't even using the factory profile, and it won't let me choose any other ones, either (though a whole list does show up!)
I tried repairing/verifying the profiles in the ColorSync Utility, but it didn't help.
Is there somewhere I can download the profile and install it? I'm running a white 20" Core Duo 2GHz iMac (summer of 2006), if that helps.
    Thanks!

    seenew,
I'm wondering if you would have any luck with resetting the PRAM? PRAM settings hold some of the display preferences I believe.
See: "Mac OS X: What's stored in PRAM"
If not, I am wondering if reapplying the Combo update for 10.4.7 might correct the display calibration issue or at least return it to the default?
I don't think that recreating the .plist file for displays will help.
As far as I know you cannot "download" the profile.
sorry if those suggestions don't help,

  • Color profile for print

Do I need color profile for print taged in the file?
I need to print some photos at LAB (photo lab) and they print in color space sRGB.
I have created through Adobe Raw a JPEG file, which has untagged color profile.
Is it necessary to have a color profile for a print at photo lab tagged in the file or better not?
    Thank you for explanation.

Since you say the printer "prints in color profile sRGB", it sounds as though you should save your images tagged with the sRGB IEC61966-2.1 color profile.
If I'm understanding you correctly "Lab" does not mean "print lab", it's an acronym that describes an alternate color space for representing an image, fundamentally different from RGB.  Print houses normally don't expect an image to be sent to them in Lab mode.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lab_color_space
In all seriousness, you should ask these questions of their customer service:
    1.  What format should I provide the image in (JPEG, TIFF, etc.)?
    2.  Should I tag the image with the sRGB IEC61966-2.1 color profile?

  • Cant see any video only white screens in Viewer and Canvas

I dont know if anyone has encountered this figured out how to resolve it yet. In FCP 7 on Snow Leopard when i drag a clip into viewer or try to edit in the Canvas all i see is a white screen. The title safe lines and wireframe show up when i turn these on and off, but no video. I occasionally get a solarized image in the Canvas. the time code progresses, but nothing in either window.
    Thanks for any insights.

Thanks for all the suggestions, including links back to earlier discussions. This did shed some light, (and kicked me to be more explicit), when reviewing an earlier question on the same issue, but stating that this happened on an external Dell 2408 monitor...which is what I am using to edit. When i open the MBP and remove the video miniport cable and try to play on the laptop display, all is well, I can see video in both Viewer and Canvas. When i plug the monitor back in and drag these windows over to the monitor (cant move the FCP application wholesale) they also play fine. When i close the MBP, wait and refire it up with mouse or keyboard...I see video in both, but when i play either one the image jumps back and forth, cycling from one frame and back...while the time code advances and the audio track does too.

  • Green screen in both viewer and canvas

Came in this morning, tried to log and capture some material from my dsr-11. Got i/o error. Quit, restarted and the viewer and canvas screens were green. Quit and tried starting FCP without a project open. Same thing. Tried restoring old preferences. same thing. Tried restarting from cloned drive, same problem which seems to indicate a hardware problem, ran hardware tests in techtool pro without any success. Any ideas?

Update. I bought a new firewire 800 card (a LaCie, the same as the old one) but haven't installed it yet. I figured, let's see what happens if you reconnect a drive to the old firewire 800 card. Same thing; both the viewer and canvas screens are green. I quit, disconnect the drive from the firewire 800 card, restore preferences using fcprescue, same thing. I do a restart, same thing. Then I do what I did yesterday, shut down, disconnected the g5 from power for 5 minutes, reconnected, restarted, everything's working again.
So a good reminder: if things are working properly and you've tried a bunch of remedial steps, Shut down and disconnect power from your computer for a couple of minutes. Never made much sense to me, but it sometimes will help.
I'll replace the firewire 800 card in a while and post back what happens.

  • White Viewer and Canvas screens in FC Studio & Not an Idiot

    iMac
    2.66 GHz Core Duo
    2GB RAM
    OS X 10.5.8
    FCS 3
The viewer and canvas have apparently decided to flip to white and remain there. But first, they decided they'd rather display a strange, posterized/solarized version of whatever clip was loaded at the time.
Viewer prefs set properly to RGB
    Background set to black.
Changing display prefs from millions to thousands then back again - fail.
Clean reinstall of FC Studio - fail.
    QT test clip - 720x480, DV/DVCPRO - NTSC
    Any ideas?

Viewer prefs set properly to RGB<</div>
Okay, you know that one. Good.
    Background set to black. <</div>
    Completely irrelevant. Not good.
Changing display prefs from millions to thousands then back again - fail. <</div>
Right, but a restart of FCP or the Mac might also be part of that debug just to rule out all possibilities.
Clean reinstall of FC Studio - fail. <</div>
Of course. Reinstalling Apple software is the LAST thing we'd suggest. Well, it's the last thing I would suggest. It is almost always a complete waste of time for a long list of reasons but mainly for only one: unlike Windows apps, Apple software just doesn't work that way.
    QT test clip - 720x480, DV/DVCPRO - NTSC <</div>
Okie dokie. When you play this clip in QT what happens?
when you launch Motion and attempt to run a previously saved comp what happens?
    Any ideas? < </div>
Debugging your particular issue is not going to be easy. Trying to figure out if it's FCP, QT, your graphics card, your monitor, or some other weird and obscure setting is a question, largely, of having a good feel for your system's behaviors and application inventory and history.
Stick with it, we're going to be asking you some really idiotic questions and asking you to perform some really lame tests.
