Color profile problem after installing CS4

OK.
First, let me post these side-by-side comparisons:
As you can see in Image 1 (the "before," left-side photo in each comparison), the colors and overall appearance are distorted. I've read things about gamma but it's all confusing to me. This is surely a color profile problem, right? The transition among pixels that involve colors of yellow and gray is rocky, grainy, and the flat out color is just wrong. Now this color problem affects pictures when opened in both Photoshop 7.0 and the standard Windows Photo Viewer. Meaning, whenever I open pictures in both PS 7.0 and Windows Photo Viewer (my default viewer), this color problem totally messes up certain photos and really damages my ability to edit. I'm an avid photo editor and it's imperative I have proper color display so that I can accurately edit. Keep in mind that certain pictures do not take on this error. When a photo is generally brighter, the distortion is basically invisible. It's photos that are dark or have dark portions in them that display the distortion.
*Note: I took these before-and-after pictures with my camera, because screencapping would not work, since you all don't have the same color profile issue on your computer. That's the only way I can show you!
HOWEVER, when I open photos in another standard Windows application, "Microsoft Office Picture Manager," the color problem is magically erradicated altogether. It shows photos as I've been seeing them all along, until I installed CS4 about two weeks ago. Before installing CS4, everything was fine and I had been using Photoshop 7 for years and have never had a problem. I'm guessing CS4 messed something up. It had to have. Just FYI, I uninstalled CS4, hoping it would reverse the problem. But still, the color issue persists in PS 7 and in my regular Windows Photo Viewer.
Since images display their true form in Windows Office Picture Manager, I don't think I need to calibrate my screen. Or do I? I've read things about it, and to some people, it's not necessary. Right? Okay. I really hope someone can give some advice! Thank you!
P.S. Here's the original photo. On my screen, it looks distorted when opened in photoshop or opened w/the viewer. However, here on Firefox, it's fine.

You should try to familiarize yourself with the concepts of color management.
It's kind of too in-depth a subject to walk you through from a cold start here...  There are a lot of good resources out there to help you get started.  For example, in just a few seconds Google turned up this:
http://www.adobepress.com/articles/article.asp?p=1315593
The one thing to remember is this:  There is NO quick solution, easy set of defaults, or direct answer to making your setup do what you want without your having to understand color management.
People may tell you to calibrate your monitors, or use a particular color profile as a default, or whatever, and they may have good, solid reasons for telling you those things, but if you don't attempt to get your mind around color management it will always seem as though something isn't working right, or is simply magic, which will be frustrating to you.
Here are some basic questions to ponder:
What image color profile is your image carrying?
Is your monitor a wide-gamut display and do you have a color profile set up for it?  What kind of monitor is it?
What version of Windows are you running?
Do you know the difference between a color-managed app and one that is not color-managed?
Which of the apps you're using/showing above are color-managed?
What are your settings in Edit - Color Settings?
Take some time and do some research, get your head around the concepts, and it will all make more sense I promise you.

  • Weird color profile problem after SMC update

    Although I've managed to resolve this particular problem, I wonder if anyone has suffered the same thing.
    Software update says that I should do the firmware update, so I did that yesterday night. Also, at the same time, I went and removed MS Office 2004 Test Drive (it was taking up space for no good reason). Sometime after doing those things, it seems like OSX had lost the display color profile. The only ones I've got was the Adobe one, Generic RGB and sRGB. The generic RGB washes the screen with a blue tone, and clicking on Calibration would merely have the ColorSync utility complain about the profile isn't there.
    Looking at the knowledge base, it says that after the 10.4.8 upgrade, the screen may look bluer than before. The curious thing was that my Macbook reported it running on 10.4.8 when I first got it. But anyways I downloaded 10.4.7's LCD profile, and put it at the location specified in that knowledge base. Display preference still didn't pick up on the profile, so I end up restarting the machine, and now it seems to be using a profile called "Color LCD".
    I'm wondering if anyone else have experienced something like this, and going to document this here as a possible solution if someone is lost after a random deletion of a color profile....
    Macbook 13"   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    I had something similar happen when I upgraded to 10.4.8. In fixing the blue tint problem, I loaded a backup copy of the Color LCD profile. Subsequently, under exact circumstances I don't remember, the machine "lost" the profile. And the calibration option would just give an error.
    So somehow, after further fiddling, I ended up with two copies of Color LCD profile, one the old 10.4.7 one, one the 10.4.8 one. I haven't had the problem of it losing the profile again.
    But I might mention that there is a related problem which you may encounter. If I use fast user switching with another account and return to my (admin) account, the blue tint returns. The workaround is as described in this article:
    http://www.macworld.com/weblogs/macosxhints/2006/02/fuscolor/index.php
    I have created an alias to the DMProxy application as described in the above article, and have to run it after every time I use fast user switching.

  • Print driver/color profile problems after 2.0 update

    Since I updated to the latest version of aperture 2 I have had problems with printing on my canon 5200R printer. The coloring is way off, as if aperture does not seem to recognize the canon print drivers or color profiles. I have read about printing from another program but was so happy with color quality using aperture 1.5, is there a fix for the current problem?

  • Login Window Color Profile Problem

    I just upgraded my Mac Pro from 10.4.11 to 10.5.8 and finally to 10.6. I downloaded the 10.6.4 Combo update and all was fine. When I ran the next round of updates, which included the “Snow Leopard Graphics Update,” my calibrated display color profile was switched to the standard “VGA Display” color profile. That in itself wasn’t a big deal as I readily switched it back (on all 3 user accounts) but, the Login window now uses the standard “VGA Display” color profile and it looks terrible. I have a NEC MultiSync P1150 19” VGA CRT. The video card is the nVidia 7300GT that came with the Mac. This monitor was one I originally spec’d for a friend of mine back in the late 1990’s (MFG date is 1997) and the color is so good yet that I see no reason to replace it. The monitor is not the issue here.
    My question; Is there a .conf file for the login window that I can edit so it selects my calibrated color profile instead? I’ve read the articles http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1083 and http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4286 and it doesn’t appear that I even need this update.
    I imaged my hard drive after each OS upgrade so I have a day old image to revert to 10.5.8 if needed and then run the updates again (this time skipping the graphic update) but, I would rather not have to spend the several hours to revert and upgrade again.
    I have some experience with command line editing in Unix/Linux. I just need to know the correct file(s) to edit. Also, do I have to enable the Root user to do this? I seem to remember reading somewhere that the Root user by default is not enabled in Mac OSX.
    TIA…..Paul

    So, I went ahead and restored from my 10.5.8 image. I upgraded to 10.6 and the login screen matches my user color profile. After the upgrade to 10.6, OSX changed the default color profile to “VGA Display” instead of the “VGA Display Calibrated” profile I had created back in 10.4.11. This uncalibrated color profile looked fine at this point so I left it at that setting. It actually looked a little better that my older calibrated profile. So, no real problem here.
    BTW the older calibrated profile was created using OSX calibration tools in 10.4.x. I’m going to calibrate again in 10.6.4 and see what it looks like. This monitor has excellent color. Game play is super and film photography editing on it has always reproduced very nice matching images.
    I then updated from 10.6 to 10.6.4 with no additional updates applied. The problem with the “Color Profile Challenged Login Screen” happened after the 10.6.4 Combo Update. The “VGA Display” profile had somehow been altered. I switched to Apple RGB and that matched the pre-10.6.4 VGA Display profile.
    Apparently I wasn’t paying close enough attention during the first install. I can deduce at this point that the graphics update wasn’t the problem as I had previously reported. I did set each user color profile to Apple RGB but the login window stays at altered VGA Display. I don’t feel like experimenting with previous combo updates to identify which one is the culprit. I had a few nights to work this out and now I want to get back to using my Mac for other things. I’m going to go ahead and run the rest of the other updates including the graphics update.
    I hope I can get an answer here to see if there is a conf file I can edit to set the login window to use a color profile of my choice. It’s a minor but glaring annoyance that a slightly Monk’ish person like me would like to remedy.
    Otherwise, the system runs fine (even with only 1GB RAM) and my CS1 suite appears to have full functionality.

  • How to solve the Embed Color Profile problem...

    Hi Everyone,
    This vijay from Chennai. I have one doubt for rectify the Embed color Profile problem, that's is how can i judges whether the file had Embed Color Profile or not. anyone solve this problem.
    Thanks in Advance.
    -yajiv

    I used another profiles name, because I dont have the old one installed anymore, Youll have to be exact about the letters though.
    And from a prepress-standpoint Id like to point out that removing the profile as opposed to »Convert to Profile« seems a peculiar practice, though of course Your reasons for doing so may be valid indeed.
    You could try:
    var myDocument = app.activeDocument;
    if (myDocument.colorProfileName == "U.S. Web Coated (SWOP) v2") {
    // =======================================================
    var idassignProfile = stringIDToTypeID( "assignProfile" );
    var desc2 = new ActionDescriptor();
    var idnull = charIDToTypeID( "null" );
    var ref1 = new ActionReference();
    var idDcmn = charIDToTypeID( "Dcmn" );
    var idOrdn = charIDToTypeID( "Ordn" );
    var idTrgt = charIDToTypeID( "Trgt" );
    ref1.putEnumerated( idDcmn, idOrdn, idTrgt );
    desc2.putReference( idnull, ref1 );
    var idmanage = stringIDToTypeID( "manage" );
    desc2.putBoolean( idmanage, false );
    executeAction( idassignProfile, desc2, DialogModes.NO );

  • Premiere pro 1.5 activation error after installing CS4 Design Prem

    After installing CS4 Design Prem (which does not have Premiere in it), my Premiere Pro 1.5 comes up with the Adobe activation notice, "Your computer's configuration appears to have changed since the time the product was activated..." but when I press OK to reactivate, premiere just locks up and won't respond or load. Premiere worked fine before I installed CS4. I can install Premiere again but I was wondering if anyone knew about this since I don't want to to knock out my CS4 too!
    Thanks, Bruce

    Hi,
    I know from another site that you solved this problem with using a CS3.3 disc that you had. Exactly the same thing is happening to me. Only difference is I just wanted to free up some space and have been using the CS5 for a few weeks now so uninstalled the CS4 as it seemed odd to keep it on when it's not necessary. But now this. I have gone back to the download page and tried to reinstall but nothing. I'm guessing I will have to dig out my cS4 discs but just thought I'd see if there was a more logical alternative?

  • A lot of problems after installing Windows XP using Boot Camp on a Mac Book

    I have been having a lot of problems after installing Windows XP Home Edition (2002).
    For one, after installing Windows using Boot Camp with Mac OS X 10.5.1, I opened Windows on my Mac Book, inserted the Mac OS X Disk 1 as in the instructions and got the message: +"This package requires a newer version of the Windows installer. Do you want to update the version of the Windows Installer on your system?"+ When I clicked Yes (I had NO idea what it meant at the time), I got the message: "The required resource 'UPDATE' is missing" and the Installer quit.
    How do I fix this problem?
    Another problem I have is that there is no sound on the Windows XP, yet it works perfectly on Mac OS X. Is there any way to fix this problem?
    A third problem I have is that I can't wirelessly connect to the internet using Window XP, yet I can on Mac OS X. I have no idea on how to fix this, and it's really messing with me. D:<
    D: There are way too many problems, and I have a feeling there will be a lot more later on. Help....

    i see that i have a problem after installing my new hard drive on my macbook pro mid 2009 version. I put a new hard drive, with all of my information from my old drive installed on it, into the computer. but now have the blinking question mark folder. I see that it means that it isn't reading the new hard drive.
    did i miss a step between transferring all of my information from my old hard drive to the new hard drive and installing the new hard drive into the computer. I believe that i installed properly. it was quite easy.
    thanks for your help

    It means there is no bootable system on the drive. If you still have access to the old drive, then I suggest you boot from it then clone it to the new internal drive. Use OPTION boot to boot from the Recovery HD on the old drive:
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
    Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
         1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu then press the Continue
             button.
         2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
         3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
         4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it
             to the Destination entry field.
         5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
             the Source entry field.
         6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
    Source means the external old drive. Destination means the new internal drive.

  • Printing problems after installing the Epson Printer Driver 2.16

    Has anyone experienced any problems after installing the Epson Printer Driver 2.16 through Software Update? I am having problems printing. It denotes an error message, specifically the rastertoescpii.app isn't working?

    Oops, wanted everyone to know that the driver that Software Update downloaded and installed was 2.18, not 2.16 (which was the last one that worked for me). I just got done downloading the 2.18 driver directly from the Apple support website and installing it. Guess what? My printer is now working and everything is fine. If you are having issues, I suggest this route. Guess I solved my own problem, but hope this helps someone else.

  • Problem after installing 10.4.8

    Hello,
    I installed the 10.4.8 update today. I have a brand new macbook. When the update finished downloading, my screen just turned blank, my computer didn't react at all. I could hear the fan and that was it.
    So, I waited for some minutes, nothing happened. I decided to restart it by pressing the power button for a few seconds.
    The computer is working perfectly now and the update was installed. But, how do I know if my computer or the HD were affected? I ran the HD test and it says that the HD seems OK.
    Is that a problem with my computer or is it because of the new update? I read a posting that mentioned similar problems after installing the new update.
    Thanks...

    How did you update? Mac OS X 10.4.8 Update (delta)?
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304200
    After installing the delta version of this update on an Intel-based Mac, the computer will restart two times--the first restart after installing this update may take several minutes; please allow it to complete.

    great Problemes after installing Yosemite (10.10.2 ) with Photoshop CS6....The program crashes --last time 10 times during my work session..wacomtable doesnt work..it is slow...and get error messages about the graphic card....It s a Terror to work with my beloved Photoshop!

    The Yosemite upgrade very often damages existing Photoshop installations.  Thank Apple for that.
    You need to uninstall and re-install Photoshop, then apply all the Photoshop upgrades from scratch.
    But first, give us details about your setup:
    BOILERPLATE TEXT:
    Note that this is boilerplate text.
    If you give complete and detailed information about your setup and the issue at hand,
    such as your platform (Mac or Win),
    exact versions of your OS, of Photoshop (not just "CS6", but something like CS6v.13.0.6) and of Bridge,
    your settings in Photoshop > Preference > Performance
    the type of file you were working on,
    machine specs, such as total installed RAM, scratch file HDs, total available HD space, video card specs, including total VRAM installed,
    what troubleshooting steps you have taken so far,
    what error message(s) you receive,
    if having issues opening raw files also the exact camera make and model that generated them,
    if you're having printing issues, indicate the exact make and model of your printer, paper size, image dimensions in pixels (so many pixels wide by so many pixels high). if going through a RIP, specify that too.
    A screen shot of your settings or of the image could be very helpful too,
    etc.,
