Color Quality in Web Browsers

I built a website using iWeb 08 to display some photographs and published it to my personal domain via MobileMe. When I view the website in either Firefox (my primary browser) and Internet Explorer, the color quality of all the pictures is diminished somewhat. The colors are not as bright and vibrant as they are when viewing them in iWeb or Aperture. When I view the website in Safari, the colors are fine. The website is www.brianjhebert.com if anyone wants to do a comparison.
Is there some sort of setting that I missed for the colors to display correctly in Firefox and IE?
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Brian

Hi Brian, love your website. I am also using iWeb (ver 1.1.2) to make a photo website but I have not come across the thumbnail display and enlarge pic setting like yours. Is it from one of the templates ? Your colors on my Mac mini/Smasung monitor are vibrant alright. No color problem there.

  • Quicktime loss of quality in web browsers?

Hello. I'm trying to upload a 30M MOV file to my website. I noticed that there's a loss of quality when the movie plays in a web browser as opposed to just playing it in the Quicktime player outside of the website. Is there something I need to add to the code?
Note - this applies to just trying to play an MOV in any web browser (meaning, with no HTML - just going 'file', 'open' in any web browser).
Can I add something to the HTML code that will make the quality match how it looks in Quickime?

It is so obvious that there is a noticable loss of quality in all files exported from LR
Most of the people in this forum who try to help others with Lightroom are pleased with the quality of exported results we're getting. If you are unsatisfied, it would behoove to explain.
I mean, for me, there is no loss of quality (in fact, image is 100% same) when exporting in original format. And when exporting in reduced sizes in formats like jpeg there is some softening unless output sharpening is applied.
Otherwise, color is same, tone is same, brightness is same - it's all good for me...
Exception: some viewers are not color managed, or are color managed but do it "wrong" (I have no idea why color management tends to be so problematic)  - in which case color (and to some extent tone) will be off...
    What about you?

Operator error is a frequent culprit, but it's not the only culprit - sometimes computer setup is to blame. But if that's the case, you know who is going to have to make it right, right? Anyway, if all is well using another software, that may be a path of less resistance.
Don't get me wrong - Lr may have bugs which are influencing correct functioning in your case - but insisting that it's all Lr and none you (or your computer..) is a place from which there is nowhere to go, except to that other software we were talking about, but beware - it may have problems too .
My advice: take a deep breath, maybe a walk, even sleep on it if need be, then start again from a cooler place.

  • Exported Jpgs - Questions with regards to color profiles and web browsers

I along with others have noted the fact that it's not possible to instruct apertrue to save images without a profile. Up until recently I've been saving my images with the sRGB profile. I noted (as has been posted about elsewhere on the forums) that safari displays the image one way, and Firefox another. As others have noted, this is due to Safari being a color managed browser, and Firefox not being color managed.
However, when I save a jpg out of photoshop with NO color profile applied the image looks identical in both browsers.
I'm considering not using profiles as all if saving an image with an sRGB colorspace profile allows me to change the behavior so that Safari matches Firefox. I would love to go the other way (to do something magical to effect the way that images appear in Firefox) but that doesn't seem to be an options here.
So, after all that, my questions are:
1.) What is it specifically about not applying a profile, that makes Safari render images identically to FireFox (in other words, what's going on?)
2.) Is there any way to apply NO profile to an exported Aperture Raw image...not the camera profile, not sRGB...NOTHING.
I would guess a good runner up would be to use Automator to strip out the profile. But before I go making changes to my workflow, I'd really like to know why exactly this seems to work.

This doesn't produce the same effect as in Photoshop.
Photoshop has the ability to 'convert to profile'– to actually change the colors in an image so that even in a profile isn't embedded, the colors have been changed. If you choose to, you can also have Photoshop embed the profile as well.
Aperture on the other hand, -seems- to only have the ability to attach a profile to an image. In other words, it relys on color aware apps to interpret the image using the attached profile. (I can't seem to find a way to 'convert' to a profile in Aperture, in the same way I can in Photoshop– doesn't mean one doesn't exist, I just can't seem to find it)

  • Safari shows colors different than other browsers and GoLive

Does anyone know why Safari shows colors differently than Firefox, Explorer and Opera, Mozilla and Golive?
For example if I use "websafe" colors in photoshop with 2.2 gamma and sRGBie...2.1 and save, then import into Go Live with the working space the same, North America Web/ Internet, the colors are typically darker, although occasionally they are the same.
I have tried embedded profiles and non embeded.
The difference only happens when I view the page in Safari. By the way I use a mac, GoLive CS2
This is a constant frustration. I have created several tests but have found no satisfactory results. I am in the process of creating a website for teachers who use powerbooks and safari. And this color change really restricts creative possibilities. If the same page is viewed in Firefox it looks like it does in GoLive.
    Thanks for any help,
    Kevin

    >> When no profile is in use.. Safari will assume sRGB becaus this is the web standart profile...
True on Windows Safari and other Windows browsers.
Safari on Mac and other Mac browsers 'assumes, assigns, applies' the Mac's default monitor profile to untagged color.
This is easy to proof here in the sRGB rollover:
    http://www.gballard.net/psd/go_live_page_profile/embeddedJPEGprofiles.html
If Mac Safari 'assumed' sRGB on untagged files, then the sRGB rollover will have zero change.
    +++++
    >> converting to sRGB before saving for the web ensure god color in all browseres, and JPG and PNG can be savde with color profile
Except in Mac browsers that have 1.8 monitor gamma profiled.
The Mac-specific problem with trying to match tagged graphics on matched-color background in Safari is:
    1) The color background is untagged and will Assume default Monior RGB.
    2) The tagged graphic will be Converted to Monitor RGB.
In other words, if you fill a page with 4bb93c and place a tagged sRGB image, filled with 4bb93c, the two colors won't match up in color-managed Mac web browsers like Mac Safari...however, if you untag the sRGB file, it will disappear on the page, but it will be off color depending how close Monitor RGB is to sRGB profile in Mac browsers.
Windows, on the other hand is a different beast, it Assigns sRGB to untagged color, so tagged/untagged sRGB will be good in all Windows browsers.
At least that is what I have seen here on my Windows Vista Business box.

  • Using Color profiles and exporting for web browsers

I've been trying to figure out the answer to this question. As I'm sure you're aware Safari supports color profiles while other web browsers like Firefox do not. I would like to setup Aperture so that it displays and exports images for the widest audience possible. Unfortunately it embeds a color profile and my images on the web only display correctly in Safari. I've tried changing the proofing profiles and export settings to no avail. I didn't seem to have this problem in iPhoto, a picture there looked the same on screen as it did in Safari and Firefox but I can't achieve the same with Aperture...

Thanks for that information, unfortunately I'm not really any closer to solving the issue since I've already tried that. 1) by default, doesn't Aperture automatically embed the sRGB color profile? 2) if I set view>proofing mode to sRGB shouldn't what I see on screen match what a "dumb" application such as Firefox does when it ignores the embedded profile and display sRGB? I've tried going into the preferences>export settings and changed everything to sRGB IEC61966-2.1 but I see no difference in the final image between that and the default setting.
I guess my question is more specific to Aperture since I don't have this problem with other applications. For example, in photoshop if I do Export for Web it strips out any embedded profile and when I open that image in Firefox and Safari side-by-side they are exactly the same. But not so when I export an image from Aperture, when opened in Firefox it is desaturated and flat and of course in Safari it honors the embedded profile and looks fine.

  • Color management for web and print.

Hi there.  I would like to post my images and have them print ready for clients.  When I read about both of these I find one thing for web and one thing for print. I don't want to edit them twice. What would you suggest for easiest workflow?  I like to post the images in an online gallery for my clients and if I really like them maybe use on my homepage.  Do I have to edit twice or what is the optimal setting for a photographer.  I do mostly portraits --family, baby, couples, etc.
I am pretty well versed in actual editing processes but my understanding in this portion is still lacking.  I am trying prophoto rgb on photos today, but will this compromise my online quality?

    brwmmw wrote:
…I knew of this option but did not know if it was optimal quality…
You define the quality of the saved image in the Save for Web and Devices dialog box.
    brwmmw wrote:
…I have just been… using same files for web and print.  I wanted to increase quality across the board in print and web…
That is absurd!  (Sorry.) By doing that you are generating unconscionably and unnecessarily large image files.  You're clients won't like that.
Remember that you have no control over how anyone sees your images on the web.  Something like 97% of Internet users are running non-color-managed web browsers and uncalibrated monitor.
You and you're clients are best served when you stick to the lowest common denominator, namely sRGB images, for web.
    brwmmw wrote:
…What mode do you use for prints?…
Personally, I like to stay in 16-bit ProPhoto RGB when I print my images myself.  If sending them to a pro lab, I discussed it with the lab techs.  But I have gathered a lot of experience by now.  One really has to know exactly what one's doing to edit in ProPhoto RGB and stay in that color space.  If sending my images to a cheap lab like Costco, I stick to 8-bit tagged images that I soft-proof with the specific printer profile that will be used by the local store.
You should—and probably do—know that ProPhoto RGB has a very wide gamut that includes colors that cannot be printed by many printers, and it's up to you to compensate for that.  If you run into problems with ProPhoto RGB consider converting to Adobe RGB for print.  Make sure the printer drivers that will be used to print actually support 16-bit printing, otherwise convert to 8-bit.
Since you're a pro, I would warmly recommend you watch the video tutorials comprising the "From Camera to Print - Fine Art Printing" series by Jeff Schewe and Michael Reichmann, that are/were available for download from the Luminous Landscape.  They're working on a new 2011 edition, but the 2008 edition was just superb.  Best $35 or so I've spent in a long time.

  • Problems with color quality when saving photos.

I never used to have any problems, but just recently I have noticed that, after cropping, editing, resizing my photos, and saving....they look fine on my screen while open in photoshop, but yet when attaching them and emailing or posting them, the color quality seems to change. The photo ends up looking quite different than my original photo (the edited copy). I can't figure out for the life of me what is causing this and do not remember ever having this problem before. The only thing that has changed is a new monitor. I don't think that would have any bearing, because like i said, everything looks great until the photos are sent. (when looking in my sent folder, i can see the "altered" state of the image. it's not just a problem with someone elses computer settings, etc)
A newbie here with low tech skills, lol. Any help is appreciated, I would just like my pictures to be seen by others in the color state and quality as they appear to me, and it is frustrating.
I hope my explanation of my problem makes sense and look forward to any advice. (I'm hoping there is a quick solution like a setting I need to click on or off!??)
    (using Elements 2.0)

    Hi Amy:
Sorry that the Color Setting idea didn't do the trick. Since the occurrence is separate, that is, seeing one color view using Elements and a different color view using email view. I still suspect this area.
Calibrating a monitor to me (as the saying goes), is easier said than done. You may want to do a web search using Calibrate Monitor, or similar search words. This will find some interesting websites on calibrating monitors you can read and try out. If you do change some settings, write down what your original settings are before hand, so if you make it worse, you can go back where you started.
There are two areas to calibrate the monitor.
    1. Using the monitor controls on the monitor itself.
    or/and
    2. Using the graphics card (software) control. Which is normally found (Win XP) DISPLAY PROPERTIES>SETTINGS>ADVANCED> then the TAB with your graphics card name.
    3. Actually there is a third one, which uses a very expensive device that connects to the monitor. At the moment this method escapes me. Mainly used by professionals and serious photo editing people.
    Good Luck!

  • Large pdf(40MB) with 600 pages color quality is poor if i print more than 1 or 2 pages at a time.

I have a 40MB PDF file with over 600 pages of color images. If i print each page one at a time, there is no issue whatsoever with the quality, but if i print say 5 pages, the 4th and 5th page and any subsequent page will look like rubbish. In general, just not the same color quality as before. The Konica Minolta printer doesn't seem to be at fault here because like i mentioned, this problem does not occur if i print individual sheets, just if i print more than 5 or so.
Printing individual sheets in this instance, however, is not a real solution because in all the job will have many thousand pages. What do i do? Any one here experience a similar problem?

You were able to catch me whilst my Konica Minolta tech was here.
This is my take on his diagnosis,
The c353 while capable of quality output is not exactly a robust production level machine.
Without the aid of a RIP, all the processing needs to happen either in memory or it may have a hdd. Does the machine have a hard drive?
In either case, you are running out of memory.
Changing the printers properties on spooling may aid in completing the job.
He mentioned sending the job as raster. Print as Image from Acrobat's Advanced tab would do that, but I think you would cripple your computer doing such. Try it; be prepared to go out to lunch or something while it churns away.

  • Web browsers fail intermittently with fast user switching

I have a Core2Duo iMac (the first ones, so its the White case) that my wife and kids share. They leave all three accounts logged in most of the time.
Frequently Safari will stop being able to connect on one or more accounts. The internet connection is good as Mail, iChat and pinging apple.com from Terminal still work fine. But Safari and FF both throw errors about being unable to reach xxxx server.
Many times I can just change users and it will work on the other account. Most times if I log out the troubled account and then back in, it will be fine as well.
I am fairly network savvy and unable to determine what is failing. There doesn't seem to be anything of interest in the console logs. Seems to be somehow specific to web browsers.
Also, until we added the account for my 7 year old a couple months back, this hadn't happened that I am aware of, since there was a third account in use all the time, it has become a regular occurrence. Initially it seemed to only happen on his account, so I created a new one for him and deleted the old one, but it now has happened on his and my daughters' accounts. They both have parental controls enabled, though we aren't blocking web sites at all.
Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions,
    jack

Thanks for the info, nice to know its not just me
Have tried EVO67 suggestion and its still the same, any suggestion on which plist files to remove?
And yes I mean accounts not profiles, sorry!
If I turn off FUS then it doesnt happen but that is the same as logging out of one account, same result.

  • Quick Time Hijacks Windows File Associations Only From Web Browsers

It took me 6 hours this morning to conclusively prove that Quick Time (latest version) isn’t playing well with web browsers on my Windows XP Pro (SP3) machine (nothing new here I guess).
I develop web sites which get their content from local hard or DVD/CD drives (as opposed to from the internet). All my Windows file associations for audio/video file types point to Windows Media Player (WMP) so that when one of my web pages looks for a file type of say .mpg or .mp3, WMP is opened and the file is played. Pretty straight forward and has worked fine for years.
Some time in the last few months (and I now strongly suspect after a Quick Time update) my browsers (all of them….. IE, Firefox, and Chrome) started opening Quick Time instead of WMP when my HTML goes to open any media file type. I’ve checked my Windows file associations which all still point to WMP. I also note that when I open one of my media files from a file utility such as Windows Explorer or my aftermarket file utility (as opposed to from a browser), they correctly open in WMP. So…….. its only from browsers that QT hijacks my intended media player.
In Internet Explorer I’ve gone to “Manage Add-Ons” and “disabled” Quick Time. This in fact causes QT not to be opened but instead a blank web page appears containing only the browser’s little error box with a big red X in it which usually means a picture file is missing…… WMP is not launched even though it is enabled in Manage Add-Ons and QT is disabled.
The only way I’ve found to fix this problem is to uninstall Quick Time in which case everything works fine. (My objection to Quick Time as my default media player is that even the latest version doesn’t reliably play video created for Windows file types.)
Can anyone tell me how to make Quick Time co-exist on my computer without hijacking my attempts to get at WMP from browsers?
The only reason Quick Time has existed on my computer in recent years is so I have access to iTunes. I’ve uninstalled both Quick Time and iTunes till I find a solution to this problem which means iTunes isn’t selling me anything in the mean time.

I'm having the same issue that Quicktime hijacks file associations.
I recently reinstalled my copy of Windows 7 64-bit and have installed basically hardly anything on it. I have however installed iTunes (+Quicktime) for my iPhone and Winamp (and not even loaded Windows Media Player).
Basically when I uninstall Quicktime, I can just type an url in the IE8 address bar with the .mp3 extension and download and save the file there and then. Only after installing Quicktime the browser will open the .mp3 in the window and play it embedded with the Quicktime player.
This is something I do NOT want, and I am really ****** off that Quicktime just takes over this feature without asking me first!!
That being besides the point really because I also cannot find the option in Quicktime's settings to undo this!!
When I go to Quicktime's settings -> Browser -> MIME types
It just shows that .mp3 is linked to Winamp (like I want it to be), but it still opens as a Quicktime Control Object.
Reinstalling IE8, resetting its settings, disabling the iTunes & Quicktime addons, even removing the Quicktime Control Object class from the registry... Nothing worked!

Here you can find an mp3 file to use for testing.

THE SOLUTION for all EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION caused by fontmanger:
    OS: every MS Windows
    java_version: occures in all versions
None suggested workaround helped: not the Environment-Variable JAVA_FONTS
nore moving Fonts and so on
The Problem: one single damaged Font causes the JVM to crash
THE SOLUTION: suggested by "rsimms" in bug-thread 4762039
remove all Fonts out of the %WINDIR%\Fonts directory for ex.
in a tmp-dir and reinstall them. By reinstalling them
         Windows detects any corrupt/damaged fonts!

  • File attachment in yahoo mail does not appeare in Firefox 4, but IE & other web browsers show correctly.

Before I install Firefox 4, I have been use Firefox 3.6 and when I was checking my yahoo mail, there was not any problem to view or download file attachment.
After installing Firefox 4, when I receive a new mail with file attachment, like as video, or document, I can not see the attachment to download it. but with other web browsers like IE, I can see the attachment of the email.

    Hi!
People using a Trend Micro virus scanner should disable some webmail function. You can find the solution [http://en.kioskea.net/forum/affich-33677-can-t-download-attachments-on-my-yahoo-email here]
I do not use Trend Micro, but have the same issues. I just found my "AdBlock Plus" add-on was stopping the attachment download. What you should do to see if this is your problem too: disable AdBlock Plus, restart firefox and see if your problem is solved. Now enable AdBlock Plus again and restart Firefox.
To fix this problem: In Firefox, click on Add-ons, go to AdBlock Plus, go to Options, click on Filters--> reset statistics. Go to your attachment, click on the attachment (it will fail to download of course). Go back to AdBlock Plus and sort the statistics for "Hits". Now you can see which filter is blocking your attachment download. Disable this filter and you problem is solved!
    Regards!

  • Font is italicized, but only in web browsers

    Hi everyone,
I have a strange problem.  I've started work with a new inherited workstation, and my font is italicized, but only in web browsers.  And I *think* only on text that has default styling.  E.g., forms, textareas, Google search results, and other unstyled text.
Is there a system-wide setting that changes web browser text styling, or have I inherited a bizarre workstation?

One thing to check if it's only in the Browser, like Safari>Preferences>Advanced, does it have a custom css set there...

  • Viewing PDF forms created with LiveCycle in web browsers

    Hi,
We created a form in LiveCycle.  But this form is not viewable in any of our web browsers (i.e. Safari and Firefox), when using Google docs and Foxit Reader and it also does not open in Mac Preview.  I have to download it to my computer and then open it with Adobe Reader to view it. I want to make sure it has all the viewing capabilities available when I send it out to people, please let me know if there is a solution out there.
    Note:
I have updated the Adobe Reader to the latest version
I have removed all the previous versions of Adobe Reader
I have also tested it with different computers and continue to encounter the same issues.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
    Lisette

Sending PDFs without an Email Client Software installed needs to be handled at the server. Using a Microsoft .net web server, and SMTP host, you can send e-mail with PDFEmail.net. PDFEmail.net doesn't require Adobe Acrobat or Reader installed on the server, and works on remote and local web servers with access to a local or remote SMTP user account. PDFEmail.net doesn't require programming knowledge, just upload the scripts and the libraries to your webserver application root, and point the Submit URL action to the script.

    Hope this helps!

  • Flash not working in web browsers

    Hello,
I'm working on an Intel Mac, 10.4.7 and recently the Flash
plugin for my web browsers -- Firefox, Safari, Opera -- stopped
providing audio: video works fine, but no audio coming through. I
am getting audio in other applications, so I know the sound
settings are not muted somewhere on my computer.
I can't trace this problem to anything specific, except
around the time I noticed this problem I had installed the latest
version of iTunes. But, after working with Apple tech support, and
doing what they called an 'archival reinstall of the Apple OS, I'm
still having this problem with not getting Flash audio in the
    browers.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

    have you tried re-installing flash
