Color sent to FCP - New Clip in FCP that also needs color correction

Good evening, is there a way how - after having color corrected the FCP project in Color - to exchange or add a new clip into the FCP project, which can be color corrected in the same, initial Color project.
Meaning: I was "lazy" and I didn't bake a Motion Clip, which of course isn't showing in Color.
Now, I tried to be "smart": Exported the Motion Clip from FCP as Quicktime movie. Than went to Color and relinked media, with that new baked clip, which is the exact same length... That doesn't work...
Hm. I am being ignorant?

In your case, if you're up to date on version (1.5 or later), then a Reconform will probably work for you.
Create a new FCP sequence with the revised "baked" clip, export an XML file, open the original COLOR project, select Reconform from the file menu, select the XML you just created and hold your breah, cross your fingers and hopefully it will work.

I tried backup & restore without success. I have also found the .psess files and copied them to the catalog in the new computer but when the sides shows are opened none of the images or music is there. Only the text that I entered shows. I have even tried to replicate the file paths from the XP computer to the new computer to see if that will help.

UPDATE: By a stroke of luck I happened to find a catalog link (a PSE8D file) in the 'My Catalog' file where the imported data was stored. When I clicked on it to investigate what is was 'magically' all of my transferred projects appeared in Organizer. Upon further investigation I found that the projects transferred from my XP computer were stored in a hidden catalog that had to be accessed through the Custom Location option in Catalog Manager (accessed by clicking File then Catalog then Custom Location). No Windows or Elements search revealed this fact. I am appreciative that I just got lucky. The Adode/Photoshop company was absolutely of no help. If fact to me their structure is designed to avoid contact with their customers unless you're buying a new product. Their products have many good features (even though user unfriendly) and it's a shame they don't value their customers more once the sale is completed.
Bottom line: All of the projects (sideshows) have been recovered and work in my new Windows 7 computer. I hope my experience helps others.

Right now, after I import a new file, I have to then go searching for it amid all the other files in my project. It would be extremely helpful if the file I just imported was already highlighted and selected after import, making it instantly "locatable" and ready to go.

in a perfect world, you do know the recording date, and you simply scroll to that date.
in a very perfect world, all your other imports are already tagged, so just have to create a smart list 'unrated' ...
(I know those messy Events… a friend of mine constantly ignores my advice to check the time/date on his camera; on every battery swap, the cam creates a very erratic timestamp ... his actual recordings are listed as made in "2004" or in "2020" .... )

Well like every product there are some problems and bad points. There are good points. Software updates will be available in Software Update. Search the forums for more information, use the machine, and read the User Guide. You'll find lots of information doing that.

Color adjustment on Multi-cam clip in 10.1 not working and crash the app

In version prior to 10.1, I can do color adjustment on multi-cam clip and I can see the color change right away.
However, when I do the same action in 10.1, the change doesn't reflect immediately on the viewer. I need to move like a frame to have the effect shown. Sometimes, FCPX shows an error when I do that action and force me to quit the application.
Anyone having similar issue?
Any solution?

TS1474 I changed my computer, now i want to sync mi iPod with the new one, it says that it cannot be used unlees I have the password but I dont, what should I do?

I have my iPod since about a year, now I changed my computer, I already have all my documents in the new one, but when I try to sync my iPod with new computer its says that I need a password to use my iPod in Tunes, but it doesnt show a box to fill in or anything, I dont have the password, What should I do? When capturing FCP makes new clips

When I am capturing from a tape, FCP creates a new clip every time I pressed stop and then start again on the camera to change my shot. There are no time code breaks in the tape but I don't know how FCP is creating a new clip every time I change my angles.
Please help.

My crystal ball says you shot HDV ... and this is how FCP works with HDV capture, because thats how your camera works. The problem is that every time you start/stop recording in camera you are creating a new and separate clip that is stored on tape, even though the timecode is contiguous the clips are separate MPEG2 data structure entities. During HDV capture FCP is just copying the MPEG2 data structures stored on tape onto your hard disc (and wrapping that data up as a Quicktime Movie in the process) and every time the it encounters a new clip in the data stream then thats what is created on your hard disc.
If you do not want this to happen then you can use an I/O device to facilitate capturing your footage from your camera via a video output instead of via firewire. Matrox make very affordable I/O hardware with some great features ... check out the MXO2 Mini. Blackmagic's Intensity card may not be as feature rich but offers superb value for money if you are working on a desktop system only.

FCP not making new clip on timecode break

I want FCP to make a new clip every time I start/stop recording...
I have "make new clip" set on timecode break in the User Prefs...
Why is it not making new clips?

Becuase it doesn't do things like iMovie... and there shouldn't be a TC break everytime you pause the camera. If there is one though, FCP will create a new clip there if the preference for this is set in the user prefs.
BUT there is a way to get the long captures broken down into subclips and they act much the same as clips in iMovie.
Capture a tape. Select the clip in the Browser, and then from the Mark menu, select "DV Start/Stop Detect. FCP finds all camera cuts and puts a marker there. You can rename them anything you want, select a marker and drag it to a bin, and it creates a subclip containing only the material from that marker to the next. This only works with DV=25 formats... miniDV, DVCAM, DVCPRO...

Whats the best way to import video clips from FCP into a personal template

Hey all, I'm doing some tests. I see some color shifting going on when I export out of FCP using QT conversion (same settings as sequence), Importing into Motion, then adding lower third graphics, then exporting out of Motion .... and finally back to FCP. I put the new graphic added layer on top and have the original on bottom. I toggle the monitor on both layers and see a slight saturation drop on the graphic layer. Has anyone noticed that ?
The reason Im doing this is because lets say I have lower thirds that I want to place throughout a hour show. I want to set-up a basic lower third template and just plug in the video clips for the areas that I need those graphics. It would be way to difficult to export out of the timeline in FCP
and rebuild those lower thirds everytime in Motion. Does anyone know of a better way or does everyone have to export out to the desktop and then into Motion every time they want to use a Motion template.

Try roundtripping from FCP to Motion and back using Send to Motion. In FCP, Control Click your clip>Send To>Motion Project. The clip will open in Motion with the proper project properties. Make your edits there, press Save, and then render back in FCP. No exporting necessary, although you might see a gamma shift. Much easier.
To do this with an existing Motion template, I'd try copying and pasting in that template's contents once you've sent to Motion from FCP.

Unable to sync QT clips with fcp sequences.

After converting some .vob files (using ffmpegX.app) into xxx.VOB.ff.mov files, and then importing those into an fcp project, I cannot bring the clips onto the timeline without getting an out-of-sync messages and the red rendering line on Timeline.
Also, when I try to save this project for offlineRT editing by recompressing the project files, I'm shown that the new offlineRT destination file total will be three times BIGGER than the original media file.
After spending hours comparing settings between the clip to sequence, I've given up and decided to post this message in hopes somebody can help me explain what I'm doing wrong.
Here are the clip and Sequence settings:
With the clip selected I go to Tools>Analyze Movie>Clip and I get:
Video Track 1 (179.0 MB);
Frame size: 640 x 480;
Color Depth: 24-bit;
Codec: mpeg4 at Medium Quality;
Frame rate: 29.97;
Average Data Rate: 186k/sec
Audio Track (Stereo, 9.8 MB);
Duration: 00::16:26:22;
Average Data Rate: 10k/sec;
Format: 16-bit, Stereo;
Sampling Rate: 48.000 khz.
I've set the sequence settings to:
General Tab:
Frame size: 640x480 NTSC (4:3)
Pixel Aspect Ratio: Square (same as clip settings)
Field dominance: Lower (Even) (not sure about this one?)
QuickTime Video Settings:
Compressor: MPEG-4 Video
Quality (I moved it from 100 to 50%)
Audio Settings:
Rate: 48 kHz
Depth: 16-bit
Config: Channel Grouped
I did read on one site to Click the Load Sequence Preset and set it to Software Preset but this option is not available for me. So I set it to DV NTSC 48 (4:3) and every time I do this I have to go back up to the Sequence Settings Aspect Ratio and reset that back to NTSC (4:3) to get proper Frame Size.
Hopefully, this is enough for somebody out there to figure out what I'm doing wrong. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I downloaded Streamclip.app and followed your directions, but I still can't get the clip and sequence to harmonize (still can't bring the clip onto the Timeline without needing to render it). I did try letting FCP adjust the codec for me when I first brought the clip into the Timeline, but that didn't work.

I've tried the DV NTSC 48 kHz and that doesn't work and makes rendering necessary.

FCP X viewer window plays back video with color errors

I am new to Final Cut X and Final Cut PRo in general. I am doing a project at work where I needed to learn FCPX.
I figured out a lot pretty fast. But one issue i am having is that all of the clips being played back in the viewer window are being played back with this weird color error. Its happens to movie clips, still photos and titles. See below, This is a screenshot of what it looks like. When I first installed FCP it wasn't doing this but now it started doing it all the time. Its annoying because I can't see the transitions properly, and sometimes video gets out of sync with audio.
I am running Lion 10.7.1 with a Mac Pro 2 x 2.8ghx Quad Core Xeon. 16GB RAM. Nothing special on the HD's but they are at 7200rpm.
I tried adjusting prefs for playback quality, I tried transcoding media. However, its doing this to a still frame jpeg as well, which should be giving the machine ay trouble. I feel like my machine should be able to keep up with FCPX.
EDIT: I also restarted my machine a bunch of times and killed all processes that weren't necessary for the machine to run and for FCP to be working. I also have an NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT graphics card, which meets the requirements for FCP X.

I am also seeing the same issue. I have an Eizo Display and if I color correct with the i1 it behaves as above. It has been driving me crazy. If I switch back to standard profile it seems to work but my dislplay is not color calibrated. Is there a fix?

Ad key code to a clip in FCP - CT

Hi everyone..
I'm working with cinema tools and FCP.. I log the telecine log (Flex files) to CT (cinema tools) the export as XML to FCP, batch capture in FCP and then synchronize again to CT.
I have an issue with 2 clips that have wrong Keycode, I try to modify in FCP but don't know how, so then I try modifying in CT and sent it back to FCP but also I can't.
Also my last guess was to log a new clip in CT, send to FCP and recapture, but doesn't work to..
pretty sure I making something wrong, so I appreciate some one help me putting in the right direction.

It doesn't look like the clip is selected. Close the retime editor and click on the clip to make sure it's selected.

Aspect Ratio HDV clip from FCP to After Effects

Can someone help me with exporting from FCP an HDV clip to After Effects? What I am doing is trying to export an HDV clip from FCP to AE but when I import it into AE the aspect ratio is all off. I have an HDV 1080i50 easy setup timeline and I am exporting from that as a quicktime movie (not conversion) with the current settings. When I bring that into AE I have a HDV comp set up and I drop the FCP movie into that comp. My FCP movie is 1920 X 1080 and is bigger thant the AE HDV Comp. Why? Shouldn't the sizes be the same since they are HDV? Please help

HDV is 1440 x 1080 native so if you have output from FCP that is 1920 x 1080 it is being misinterpreted by AFX.
Try creating a new comp in AFX using the HDV easy setup but set the frame size to 1920 x 1080 manually and see what that does.

Importing Flip and iPhone clips into FCP

What is FCP's preferred video format?
I have a funky project consisting of clips from iPhone and a Flip Mino HD camera. When either of these are imported directly into FCP, they won't play without rendering, and any edit or trim "undoes" the render, forcing them to be rendered again... and again...
I'm guessing the best strategy is to convert them -- before importing -- to a format that FCP will like better and will play smoothly, without constant re-rendering.
So: what's the best format to convert them into, and what's the best tool for doing that pre-conversion?
Or am I wrong, and is there a way to handle these Flip and iPhone clips in FCP without pre-converting them?

But now there's a new, odd problem: I can't add transitions! After dropping these new clips in the timeline, they play fine without rendering... but whenever I try to add a transition (dissolve, wipe, etc.) between clips, FCP changes the 1 second transition to a 3 frame transition. And there doesn't seem to be any way to change the duration - no matter what I do, it keeps changing back to one frame. Strangely, I can add the normal transition to the end of the sequence, but not between clips.
Am I missing something? Does the DVCPRO50 progressive format somehow prohibit modifications like transitions?
(And should I start this as a new topic?)

Export 1 clip to FCP bin

Is it possible to import a clip from the Cinema Tools database into FCP bin? It seems that FCP wants only to import a CT log, not directly from the CT database, so in order to bring in one clip into FCP (a clip which was already in the CT database) I had to manually edit a log so that it only showed the one clip and then use the FCP CT import log feature, which made a second copy of the clip in the CT db log, which seems kind of redundant and wasteful. Why can't I just bring in one clip (CT to FCP) without these complications?

Out of FCPX, simply Share > Export Movie as ProRes, any "flavor" (even Proxy should have adequate bandwidth for excellent results.) [Don't confuse proxy media in FCPX with ProRes 422 Proxy which is a full resolution format that has a bandwidth of approximately 45Mbps for 1080/30p video. Proxy media in FCPX is ProRes 422 but 1/4 resolution (i.e., 1080 video is downconverted to 960x540.)]
You can drop the video into Motion (set your project to accommodate the length of the clip, or all the clips you need), do your thing, then Share > Export out of Motion and bring the video back into FCPX.
The way I figure it, the difference between the "new way" for Motion 5 and the old roundtripping is maybe one extra rendering.
With Motion 5, you don't need the video from FCPX. You design your effect and as soon as you save it, it's available in FCPX. There is a placeholder provided (with the exception of generator templates, for which they are simply not necessary.) If you need a "reference", you can export a still and load it into the placeholder while you design, then delete it when your finished.
The way Motion 5 and FCPX work together is so much better and more efficient than the old way of FCPStudio roundtripping.
