Color settings after calibrating monitor with Spyder 4Pro

Hello,  Now that I got my new laptop and finally got a perfect calibration with the Spyder 4Pro , I have a question.  Do I leave the color space on Photoshop and Lightroom as they are (Abobe 1998) or use the new profile?  I also do a lot of my own prints with a great Epson, do I leave that on the setting as is ( let photoshop manage etc) or use the new profile?
Thanks in advance....

The profile saved by your calibration software is your Monitor Profile and absolutely nothing else..
It has absolutely nothing to do with your working color space or your printer (target) profile.
Monitor profiles are absolutely device-dependent, that means it only applies to your particular monitor unit and nothing else, not even an identical monitor of the same brand and model.
Your working space should be a a device-independet color space, such as ProPhoto RGB, Adobe RGB, sRGB, etc.
Your printer profile, also called target profile, is a totally device-dependent profile for your specific combination of paper/ink/printer.
You need to do an awful lot of reading on Color Management, a subject some of us have spent a very long time studying before we grasp it.  A good place to start would be here:

  • Problem with blue color in Photoshop CS4 after calibrating monitor

Hi to all! I would appreciate if someone can help me!
Before some days I calibrated my monitor with Pantone Huey Pro and after that I find out that photoshop doesn't show blue color corectly. I create a blue (0,0,255) page and it looks a bit like violet, while I don't have any problems with red and green (which are perfect), or with other programs (other programs display blue and all colors correctly). But when I save this blue page and open it with a different program I see the real blue color. So the problem is that during editing in Photoshop blue color isn't correct, it's a bit violet.
Can anyone tell me why blue color doesn't behave properly in Photoshop? Is there any setting I should change in Photoshop Color Settings?
I use sRGB on my camera, and sRGB in Photoshop (North America General Purpose 2, sRGB IEC61966-2.1, U.S. Web coated (SWOP) v2, Dot Gain 20%,  Dot Gain 20).
    Thanks for your time!
    George

    Thanks for your quick responce!
I update Huey and Photoshop and did the calibration again but it didn't fix the problem. Is it possible that the calibrator doesn't work properly?
My monitor isn't very new, so I don't think it has wide gamut display.
When you say that "if your display is not truely sRGB" you mean that maybe the profile created Huey isn't correct? I have done many times the calibration and the result is always the same.
I think that Paintshop uses color management, too, shouldn't it display the same wrong blue color if Huey's profile is wrong?
How can I check if Huey works properly? Maybe I should try it on a different PC?
    Thanks for your time!!!
    Best regards,
    George

  • Please help.  Photoshop isn't displaying colors correctly after new monitor/calibration

When I open JPEGS or RAW images in photoshop they have a dull, flat color to them.  This is happening after recently buying a NEW PA271W wide-gamut display and calibrating it using Spectraview 2.  It doesn't matter whether I have the Working Space in PS set to Adobe RGB or sRGB under color settings... The only way I can make my image look normal is to go under settings and ASSIGN PROFILE to Adobe RGB.  It looks fine then.  I could live with that, except the bigger problem is that I begin my editing process in RAW, where the colors are also looking flat.  The best I can tell, there is no way to assign a profile at this stage... and I don't even know if that would help.
I've been working in photoshop many years and I do know that RAW images have a 'flatter' appearance to being with, but this is something completely different.  For example, when I slide photoshop onto my other monitor next to it (I have multiple monitors) - the color reverts to the normal color I want .  And if I then slide photoshop back onto my new NEC monitor, the normal color actually stays intact for about two seconds, then reverts back to the dull color.  So I am unable to begin my work process in RAW since the colors are wrong.  Also, I know that my new monitor is capbable of displaying my images in their proper colors because when I use any of several different image viewers I have - irfanview, etc. - everything is fine.  It's only in photoshop.  Any help will be greatly appreciated.  Thanks, Chance.  Oh, and I have CS5 and I'm using Windows 7.

What you're describing sounds like your display profile is incorrect.
Don't mess with the working space, don't assign profiles -- just fix the display profile.

  • Best rgb and gamma settings for external monitor with mountain lion

    Hi,
I'm using an LG LED 22 inch monitor with my MBP mid 2010 via minidisplay to hdmi. on OS X side the settings have been default. On the LED side the settings , if set to preset RGB it tends to fade the whites a lot. when i set to user definied and let the preset rgb be at it is, the colors are quote decent. currently they are on R 50, G 58 and B 59 and Gamma 1. Which is the best RGB and Gamma value for OS X Mountain Lion?

    Welcome to the forum.
First off, you need to go and buy a hardware monitor calibrator, such as an OptixXR or similar. This will build a custom monitor profile for your specific screen. Without this starting point you can forget ANY attempt at accurate colour matching.
Never (and I mean never) use a working space such as sRGB or Adobe98 as your monitor profile, that's not what they are designed for. Working spaces control what colours are possible in the image, monitor profiles control how those colours are shown on screen. Aperture uses it's own working space so you don't have to worry about that too much.
To answer the rest far too briefly, I'd suggest setting the proofing profile to sRGB and of course use sRGB for the export preset. The gamma setting you will have to adjust depending on how dark the Lightjet prints look compared to your screen. You will have to do test-strips to start with.
Your images looking crap on flickr on Windows machines is partly because Windows web browsers generally do NO colour correction, and only partly to do with the different gamma.

  • How to calibrate 2 monitors with Spyder 2 Suite?

    Hi there!
I've just replaced my 24" imac with a new Mac Pro and two shiny new Samsung 206bw 20" displays.
My question is how do i calibrate both monitors with my Spyder 2 Suite?
It only seems to offer calibration for one monitor?
    Any help would be great.

That's because the software thinks you changed your primary monitor. Each monitor will have its own color profile as long as you don't give them both the same name.

  • Colors off after calibration

    I have calibrated my monitor.
I have checked my color profile was saved to the correct location:
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\drivers\color
I have checked the default profile was set to this profile in:
    Control Panel>Display>Setings>Advanced>Color Management
Colors were OK just after calibration.
When I powered on my PC the next day, all applications displayed colors OK (MS Office, pdf documents, Windows Picture viewer, etc.) EXCEPT Bridge, ACR, and Photoshop.
When I browse a folder in Bridge the thumbnails colors are OK (after purging the cache for this folder), but when I click a thumbnail the preview colors go off, and the next two adjacent thumbnails colors go off as well. If I open in PS colors are off as well.
    What am I missing?
Thanks for your time & help,
    Al
    System: W XP SP2, CS3 Ext, ColorEdge CE210W, X-Rite DTP94B.

From your description of the two adjacent thumbnails changing colour it sounds like you have 'Convert To High Quality When Previewed' selected in Bridge Preferences>Thumbnails. The change of colour is due to Bridge generating the higher quality colour-managed thumbnails, first the one you selected and then the files immediately before and after, i.e., three thumbnails. These thumbnails are colour managed like Photoshop and so should be more accurate than the embedded ones created by your camera.
If you select 'Quick Thumbnails' Bridge will use the embedded (camera) thumbnails instead. Alternatively, selecting 'High Quality Thumbnails' will cause Bridge to create the thumbnails all at once when the folder is initially opened, and if there are many image files this may take some time - you can watch the HQ thumbnails being generated (the colour changing) as Bridge goes through the folder.
All the other applications you mentioned don't have colour management so the MS Office, some third-party pdf viewers (Adobe Reader however does) Windows Picture Viewer, etc., are actually showing incorrect colours, and Photoshop, Brdge and ACR showing them accurately, assuming you have the colour management settings set correctly.
It's probably an good idea to print some images off and see which thumbnails are more like the printed output.
    Hope this helps, Ian

  • Posterized colors on two different monitors with Mac Mini, late 2014 model

Sometimes when I leave my Mac for a while (like an hour or more), I come back to a black monitor, then click the trackpad to wake it up (I assume it is "sleeping" but I don't see a way to make the monitor sleep), I am faced with posterization of the colors and crumbly text, like this:
I can "fix" it by going into System Preferences > Display and change the rotation to 90 or 180 or something. The screen clears up right away. Then I revert to the normal rotation. This is an ok workaround but it is not convenient. I never had this problem with my MacBook.
I first saw this issue with my late 2014 Mac Mini that I got a couple months ago, and it has happened with both monitors I have tried: an old Benq monitor attached with DVI (DVI to Thunderbolt adapter) and a new Thunderbolt Display. The Benq was connected using a DVI to HDMI adapter. I no longer have this monitor. The Thunderbolt Display is attached directly to the Mini using the Y cable to the Thunderbolt port on the Mini.
Yosemite version is 10.10.2. It doesn't happen if I wake the Mac while it's showing the screen saver.
The only things I have checked under Energy saver is "Wake for network access" and "Enable Power Nap". I don't have anything Scheduled, as I don't have a specific time of day I want it to turn on and off, but I would like the Mac to wake up right way and display correctly if I have to leave the Mac for a while during the day.
I've seen other similar threads, but so far all the suggestions I've seen talking about upgrading to 10.10.2 (which I have) or some sort of workaround involving sleep settings (which I can't quite understand). I'm going to call the Mac Store where I bought the Mini next week, or when I have some time, but I have a feeling they aren't going to be able to help me much. It seems like this is such a common problem with the new Mini's I might be stuck with it, unless someone has a better solution or workaround.

  • Color profile after calibration

I use AdobeRGB1998 color profile for monitor and Photoshop.
When I have calibrate monitor I must use new color profile?
    Have I think right?
    Thanks!

Use the AdobeRGB1998 profile for your images ( never use your monitor profile ) but make sure the monitor profile is in the MonitorRGB section in your colour settings (scroll up the rgb workspace)

  • MBP Changes color settings after sleep

After my computer goes to sleep, it has recently been waking up with a different color setting. Where the yellows are very dull and the screen has a blue hue. When I go to System Pref > Displays it changes back to normal without me clicking anything. It is getting very annoying, anyone know why it is doing this?
My computer is connected to a 24" LED cinema display which doesn't change colors on its own. The laptop has also done this without being connected to cinema display.
    Thanks guys

    This happens to me, also.
Just as you described - it happens when connected to an external display and when not connected.
It happens to me even without sleep; screensaver is enough.
I have my computer set to ask for a password after sleep/screensaver. Do you?
    charlie
P.S. I just did a search of the forums - this is apparently a very common problem, dating back at least to Leopard. I haven't seen a definitive fix for it yet.

  • Color settings between the Mini and Dell monitor

I got my new Mac Mini Intel Solo yesterday and hooked it up to my Dell 20" widescreen flat-panel. As soon as my screen popped up, the color scheme was waaaay off. It was too red. So I messed with all different kinds of color settings on the monitor itself and then tried to calibrate the monitor through OS X. Nothing worked and I couldn't get the settings right. Can someone help me? Is there a standard setting that works or is there a site I can go to with a bunch of different color settings I can try? It's really frustrating!!!
Thanks in advance for any help!

What exactly do you mean by "the color scheme was waaaay off"?
The general setup of you display should be…
    1) Display internal setting to default with the Colour Setting set to either PC Standard Preset or Mac Standard Preset (I found the Mac preset somewhat warmer/redder than the PC) and the Brightness set to your liking.
    2) Mac OS X set to use the DELL 2005FPW (or whatever is the default colour profile that matches your model) in the Displays System Preference.
This will work for most people.

  • Calibrating Monitor

I'm trying to calibrate my MacBook Pro 15", OS X 10.5.8, monitor with Spyder 3 Express.  It's asking me to rest my monitor controls to factory default settings.  How do I do this?   Thanks!

  • Adjusting Color To Match Calibration Print

    Hi folks,
I'm a little stuck at the moment with color managment. I have Photoshop displaying through a calibrated monitor and I have had my printer profiled yet I still have to make adjustments - but thats another issue and one I know how to solve (+0.5 Exposure Layer and 10% Saturation boost).
My real problem is with trying to get the images on my screen fairly accurately printed by a print company. I use Photobox here in the UK and they supply a calibration print and a matching downloadable image so that you can set up Adobe in order for you prints to match what you see on the screen.
Is there a way of adjusting the settings of my system so that as I work on an image it displays what I am going to get from Photobox - color and bightness wise. I understand that by setting the proofing preview it comes something close but how do I go about adjusting the setting and then creating a profile for the proofing tool to display.
As it stands my monitor displays nice saturated and bright calibration image but the corresponding print is much darker and less vibrant. I need to be able to set Photoshop so that the image I am working on will be the image that is printed.....I'm finding this hard to explain properly so I hope someone understands what I am asking.
Can anyone please advise on this.
    Many thanks,
    Rich

First set Ps Color Settings to correctly deal with profiles:
Ps> Edit> Color Settings> Color Management Policies: 1) Set RGB-CMYK-Gray to "Preserve Embedded Profiles"
Then 2):  just below that, check the following three options: Profile Mismatches, Ask When Pasting, Ask When Opening.
Now open your Photobox 'calibration' file — it probably is not a 'calibration' file, but let's move forward.
Just before it opens you should now hit a Profile Warning — unless they are idiots, they will have an embedded profile in their image (most likely sRGB) — but pay attention to what profile they are using (and use their embedded profile in the opening mismatch dialogue).  If their file opens without a profile warning (with my above Color Management Policey settings) then you are already using their profile in Ps.
If the profile warning says it does not have an embedded profile, get them on the phone and ask them specifically what ICC Profile they use...knowing what profile they use (and Converting to it) is the key.
    ++++++
Once you know their profile half the mystery is solved.
    Open your file in Photoshop.
Then: View> Proof SetUp> Custom> Select their profile (to see how it will print in their work flow) — don't get stuck in "Soft Proofing" mode here (get the point and visit Proof SetUp sparingly and usually ONLY when you have a device-dependent printer profile or CMYK color space to get a feel for what's going on).
    +++++++
To prepare your file for delivery:
Open in Ps> RESIZE (Image> Image Size) to print resolution (300ppi)> Edit> Convert to Profile: Destination Space> their profile> Okay
THEN: File> Save As .tif or .jpg
At the point you deliver your file Converted into their profile — and you still do not get the good color you see on your 'calibrated' monitor — they are screwed up (or your file is out of print gamut) — find a new printer (or re-examine your approach to preparing your color, read up on Gamut Warning in Ps Help).
It helps if you get a known good reference file like the Photodisc PDI AdobeRGB with the three baby faces and gray ramp (Google a download link) — for example — Convert the PDI image to their profile and if it doesn't come back looking like a professionally-balanced print, they are hosing it.
Likewise, if it doesn't look like a professionally-balanced file in Ps — neutral grays, nice healthy yellow-red skintones — your monitor profile is off.
    +++++++
I recommend reading the late Bruce Fraser on this subject "Soft Proofing" in Photoshop...

  • Import footage that was corrected on monitor with 2,35 gamma

    Hi,
I received Prores HQ footage that was color corrected on a monitor with 2,35 gamma.
It looks quite bright on my monitor which is calibrated to 2,2 gamma.
What would be the easyest way in After effects to adjust the gamma from 2,35 to 2,2 so that the image will look as it should.

    1 / 2,35 * 2,2 = 0.936
Add a gamma effect set at 0.936

  • Distiller: can't change color settings anymore

I just tried to change some settings in a specific Distiller (8) setting, but when I press Cmd-E and get to all the option tabs, I cannot acces the color tab! When I click on the word color the screens stays as it is and the little tab turns grey. After that I can't press OK or cancel: I can only switch between other tabs... Anyone knows what went wrong here? I really need to change those settings!

Hi; now I could solve the problem for me. I had to remove my Photoshop10 color profile from Mac/Users/.../Library/Application%20Support/Adobe/Color/Settings/ because it must have been corrupted by other CS3 applications (Illu13, Indy5 etc.). Then I created a new color profile there using 'Photoshop10 > Edit > Color Settings', and to be sure I created for each CS3 app a separate one (I named it ColSetPhotoshop, ColSetIllustrator, ColSetIndesign etc.) and selected it in each app, so that those corruptions cannot occur in the future. NEVERTHELESS: ADOBE SHOULD AVOID THOSE INSECURITIES IN THEIR PRODUCTS!
After doing so, Distiller's color tab is functioning normally.

"My Distiller crashes every time I hit the color tab in the edit Adobe pdf settings menu.....any ideas what that might be? "
Do not use any other colour parameters than those made with Adobe photoshop or those which are pre-installed.
If you create personal colour parameters with Illustrator or Indesign, this drives Distiller to crash when hitting the colour tab in the pdf settings.
Remove all personal colour parameters (User > Library > Application Support > Adobe > Color > Settings) except those made with Photoshop.

  • Color management problem with calibrated monitor

I'm using a Samsung Syncmaster T220 LCD profiled and calibrated with a Spyder2Express. PC runs Vista 32 SP2, Photoshop CS4. Using Adobe RGB for workspace profile. System profile is set to the Spyder2Express profile.
Open up photo in Photoshop. Colors fine.
Resize for web, convert to sRGB, then check preview in "Save for web..."
Under preview, I preview the following:
    -Monitor Color
    -Windows (no color management)
    -Macintosh (no color management)
    -Document Profile
The Preview of Windows, Document Profile settings look exactly right, whereas the Monitor Color setting looks badly darkened. I preview with Firefox, save and view image using IrfanView and Firefox. It's badly darkened. I'm stumped. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. This is similar to another recent posting here, except that I am using a calibrated display with profile.
    Anyone know what I'm missing?
    Thanks, Luke

I'm a little confused. Previewing through "Monitor Color" and "Windows (no color management)" are both technically not color managed. Perhaps we should distinguish further between "colorspace aware" and "device profile aware". So I can understand when you say that Irfanview will do some color management, but does not use the monitor device profile. But I would have thought that Firefox in non managed-color config would still use the monitor device profile.
I would have thought (and I might turn out to be wrong) that previewing using "Windows (not color managed)" would be the standard for previewing images for stock browser configurations. What photoshop shows me is correct rendering of the image based on what I edited in this mode. But the browser shows me a version that looks like it is not device aware, counter to photoshop's prediction. What is going wrong here? Do none of these major window apps use device profiles? Why does photoshop think that they will?
Another thing that has been suggested is that my monitor is calibrated so far from the stock configuration that sRGB photos displayed on it without the benefit of device profiling will come out far off the mark. But I profiled the monitor in stock hardware configuration and made no adjustments, and don't think that the hardware config of the monitor has changed.
If this turns out to be just a practical issue, then it leaves a major question. What did I accomplish by calibration if my calibration doesn't look like anything I actually display with? I can guess that prepress work will be more accurate in most respects, or I hope so anyway. But how should I manage workflow for developing images for web content if I am unable to match up what I'm editing with what the end user will see?
Or maybe I'm just doing something wrong...or maybe photoshop is...or I don't know what. Where do I go from here? Is WCS implicated in this somewhere?
    Luke
