Color settings in Photoshop for print production

Does anyone have experience and/or knowledge about the color settings in Photoshop?
We have business cards that will be printed using offset printing (4 color printing) and Spot printing (Pantone), and need guidance in configuring the settings.
Please help!

Oh, but by the way, Photoshop is an odd choice for business cards and a troublesome one for spot colour. Illustrator or InDesign perhaps.

  • Color Setting in CS4 for printing to Epson R2400 in the UK ?

    Hi all. I'm a newbie to CS4 and have been having trouble deciding on which color settings to use with which printer profle/standard.  I have an Epson Stylus R2400 printer and I'm not sure what the color settings should be to print on Epson Premium Glossy in the UK. All the info /videos i have seen refer to North America and I'm unsure if I should be using these settings or Europe Prepress 2.  I have currently set the printer profile to Adobe RGB (1998), but have the option to choose SPR2400 Premium Glossy profile with Matt, Fine Art(which I downloaded from Epson .com and I believe to be a US profile and I'm not sure if this is the right one to be using in the UK )and others. Can anyone advise me please!
    Regards Denis

    europe pretends to be printing more saturated C and M inks
    (most of the times it doesn't)
    and it shouldn't matter anyway
    a well color managed workflow is meant to reproduce pictures as accurately as the individual devices permit, regardless of gamut
    use the Epson profile for your paper
    or [better], make your own with an EyeOne Pro or a color Munki

  • Profile PhotoShop for printer at Costco.

    I want to profile PhotoShop for printer at Costco. I have the Costco profile. How do I tell photoshop that I want to see the images as they will be printed?

    Where did you install the profiles?
    …and did you reboot your machine afterawrds. or did you at least log out and back in?
    You have provided no information about your setup at all (shame, shame!) so I can't comment until you do.

    Note that this is boilerplate text.
    If you give complete and detailed information about your setup and the issue at hand,
    such as your platform (Mac or Win),
    exact versions of your OS, of Photoshop (not just "CS6", but something like CS6v.13.0.6) and of Bridge,
    your settings in Photoshop > Preference > Performance
    the type of file you were working on,
    machine specs, such as total installed RAM, scratch file HDs, total available HD space, video card specs, including total VRAM installed,
    what troubleshooting steps you have taken so far,
    what error message(s) you receive,
    if having issues opening raw files also the exact camera make and model that generated them,
    if you're having printing issues, indicate the exact make and model of your printer, paper size, image dimensions in pixels (so many pixels wide by so many pixels high). if going through a RIP, specify that too.

  • Color Settings CS3 Mac for CMYK Commercial Print

    Can somebody advise me as too what I should be setting my color settings to so they will be the same across the suite and when I send my files to commercial print that prints CMYK sheet fed coated.
    I've read so much I'm confused. I'm new to CS3 and the Mac ... In the past my work has come back perfect in color and matched to my monitor. Now on CS3 on the Mac I'm not sure what to do.
    If anyone can help it would be most appreciated.

    Charlene wrote:
    > Marco ... I read your post on rGB / CMYK conversion
    Which one was that, if you could remind me?
    >I work through a print broker that prints CMYK and the only thing he can tell me is that they print CMYK and on sheet fed coated.
    Well, yes, print is always CMYK. As for "sheetfed coated", I would assume that they intend a color space like the one described by the U.S. Sheetfed Coated v2 profile (though it could possibly be the GRACoL2006_Coated1v2 profile). You may want to ask them to confirm one or the other, to be safer.
    >So my question is di turn everything to CMYK on my monitor and change to sheet fed coated in the settings?
    To make sure I understand your question, I think you are asking me whether you should turn your image file(s) to a chosen CMYK output profile. Yes and no. You should do your color and tonal correction work
    b in RGB
    , and convert to the intended CMYK output profile
    b only as a last step
    , just before you deliver the files to the print provider or the prepress specialists.
    Do
    b not
    convert your files to the intended CMYK output profile in the beginning and correct them in CMYK. Do not do that. That is not the most desirable way to work.
    The default working spaces in Photoshop's Color Settings are important, but not essential. Yes, you should set the default RGB profile to AdobeRGB (if not ProPhoto RGB, though you may wish to hold off on that one until you have more experience with the application), and the CMYK default profile to U.S. Sheetfed Coated v2.
    But, as long as your chosen color management policies are to "Preserve Embedded Profiles", and as long as the image files you work on are tagged with the appropriate profile, then the default profile in Color Settings is no longer relevant.

  • Color settings grayed out in Print Settings

    Photoshop CS5 v12.1.
    Mac OS 10.6.
    I'm printing to an Epson R1800 printer.
    Print. Choose Color Management. Choose Document. Choose "Photoshop manages color". Choose the correct printer profile that matches the paper I'm using. Choose Relative Colorimetric.
    THEN, I click Print Settings...under the 4th drop downu I choose "Print setting..." again. Under "Basic" "color" and "Color settings" are grayed out as are some of the "Media Type" options.
    Is this normal? The problem is my black and white prints are printing really badly. They have color tones. I've cleaned the nozzles on my Epson printer, done everything the print utility suggests. All the test prints look fine.
    I'm at a loss. Am I missing something obvious?

    I see you haven't gotten much input so far from the Mac experts...
    As a Windows user without an Epson printer myself, I can't comment on why you might have color problems under the covers where the software doesn't seem to be following the chosen settings.  However, perhaps I can get you thinking about how to further diagnose the problem...
    The obvious thing I see is that you've chosen "Photoshop Manages Colors" in the main dialog, which implies your intent is to shut off color-management in the printer driver itself.  So to me the graying out of those settings in this case seems to make sense.
    Have you tried a test print using the "Printer Manages Colors" setting?
    Also, to try to test whether color-management isn't being turned off in the printer (regardless of what the grayed-out settings show), do you see any improvement if you use "Photoshop Manages Colors" but choose a standard profile, such as sRGB IEC61966-2.1 for the Printer Profile setting?

  • Can Adobe Flash be an alternate soft for Adobe Photoshop (for PRINT)? Is it possible to use Adobe Fl

    Is it possible to use Adobe Flash instead of adobe photoshop for generating images for PRINT???
    how about the CMYK settings? Will i have an issue with that? Please I need an expert at this too.

    No. Flash would be one of the worst applications to substitute for Photoshop for creating art for print output. If you must use something other than Photoshop, you could use Illustrator, it is specifically designed to create artwork for print.
    Flash has no direct method for outputting CMYK.

  • What software for print production (magazine)? InDesign or other...

    I am new in the field of print production. Do you have a favorite software for this field? I do have CS3 but is the Web premium and it does not have InDesign. Should I buy it? Or, is there another one more user-friendly and easy to work with printing companies.

    Hi Numacr,
    This is a question with a potentially long answer. I am a professional designer and web developer. I've done all forms of print production and web production.
    In a nutshell... the industry standards change from time to time. Fortunately for you, they've recently changed over the past few years. Now, unless you have publications or ads going to a printer in a small town somewhere with older presses and such, you will be just fine with the Adobe CS3 design suite.
    Industry standard software are as follows:
    Adobe Photoshop
    Adobe Illustrator
    Adobe InDesign
    Adobe Acrobat Pro
    Unless you're doing large format printing (ie. banners, billboards, etc.) you are pretty much able to send a high-res PDF file. Sometimes you can even send the InDesign or Illustrator files to the printer.
    I'd also suggest joining an InDesign group online... go to Adobe's website to check it all out.
    The other option for a page layout program is Quark, but I wouldn't recommend it. They've only recently come around to improve their software, but it's too late. Pretty much everyone is now using Adobe InDesign.
    Hope this helps.

  • For print production, should I be working in RGB or CYMK?

    So one mentioned that I should always work in RGB in Illustrator.  Is that true?
    All my projects are for print BTW,,

    If you work in RGB, you run the risk of assigning colors that simply do not exist in CMYK.

  • Change color settings in Photoshop CS4 js

    Hi,
    I need to set color settings when I save_As my doc. This what I have, but it's not working:
    var myFile = new File (myFinalPath);
    if (myFile.exists) {
        app.colorSettings.enableColorManagement = true;
        app.colorSettings.cmsSettingsPath = myFile;
    Scritp runs without problemes, but color settings remain not set. I do have the setting file saved in myFinalPath location.
    Thank  you for your help.
    Yulia

    app.colorSettings returns a string. The contents of that string depends on your current color settings.
    You have assigned two meaningless properties to the colorSettings properties. The script runs without errors because javascript lets you create new properties. But the new properties don't do anything unless the script uses them after creating them.
    If you are trying to load a colorsettings file you can use this function.
    function loadColorSettings( file ) {
         var desc = new ActionDescriptor();
            var ref = new ActionReference();
            ref.putProperty( charIDToTypeID('Prpr'), stringIDToTypeID('colorSettings') );
            ref.putEnumerated( charIDToTypeID('capp'), charIDToTypeID('Ordn'), charIDToTypeID('Trgt') );
        desc.putReference( charIDToTypeID('null'), ref );
            var fileDesc = new ActionDescriptor();
            fileDesc.putPath( charIDToTypeID('Usng'), file );
        desc.putObject( charIDToTypeID('T   '), stringIDToTypeID('colorSettings'), fileDesc );
        executeAction( charIDToTypeID('setd'), desc, DialogModes.NO );
    If you are trying to set the document's profile when saving you can use document.convertProfile()

  • Using TypeTool in Photoshop for Printing Projects

    Hi, I am new to Photoshop CC and i have recently subscribed to CC.
    The projects i have completed so far have been photo editing/manipulation and adding text to these before sending to print but on reading a few forums i am getting the impression that i should'nt be using the type tool in Photoshop if i am intending on the project being printed? and i get the impression that i should be using Illustrator to create the text as that uses vector format and the text stays crisp? If this is fact what is the type tool for in Photoshop and why can't it use vector based text?
    I have downloaded the trial version of illustrator CC and clearly see that when i create the same text in illustrator it remains crisp and clear when resizing and i understand this happens because the vector format uses mathamatical code and Photoshop uses raster based graphics.
    I suppose what i am asking is am i over complicating matters and should continue using Photoshop for everything or do i need to be using Illustrator as well for the text side of my projects? Would this mean editing/manipulating the image in Photoshop then importing the completed image into Illustrator to add the text?
    Regards, David.

    I suppose what i am asking is am i over complicating matters
    Maybe, maybe not. We actually do not know, since you haven't told us what "print work" means - could be photo-based posters, could be multi-page documents with mostly text. Begin to see the problem? Using decorative rasterized text would be no issue for one, but quite a problem for the other. That said, PS is perfectly able to retain the vector qualities of its text layers when saving PDFs, which is what most print facilities will want, anyway. You merely have to avoid using anything that would cause it to rasterize like layer styles, blending modes or elaborate manual formatting because there is no way to translate most of that stuff to vectors. That limitation would also apply to Illustrator or InDesign, BTW, so the choice of program is not necessarily the defining factor here. You still need to know what you do. That and of course that the actual print process may define further requirements or eliminate them. E.g. sending off your files to a cheap web printing service and having them printed on art paper, canvas or as a photo book with an inkjet or laser printer will work just fine based on RGB raster images, but mass-printing a flyer or book on a conventional offset machine will inevitably require CMYK mode and preferably any mass text/ paragraph text to be a separate, ideally vector-based plate/ ink so it can be printed with a suitable raster (or no raster at all) independent of other image content and retains its ink density/ saturation to look really black plus a maximum of sharpness and readability. as you see, just you simple question opens a whole can of worms and it always comes down to what specific work you do.

  • Need serious help about understanding settings on photoshop for the best quality- please reply is you know a lot about this.

    Ideally I'd like to speak to someone from the UK as I feel I can't write out everything I want to say because it's too confusing and it isn't just one question.
    I need help with setting photoshop so the images are the best quality on screen and for websites and printing and how I can change that etc I've heard different things and I just need some clarification and advice.
    Obviously I'm sure some of you wont want to give personal details out that's fine but I'm generally just in need of some advice, let me know if you can help:)

    I don't change any settings.  For 1X web images I always use Save for Web.  PS remembers which web settings you used the last time.   This doesn't effect other files or formats.

  • Sharing color settings between Photoshop or Lightroom

    Okay, I'll admit it! I'm partially red-green color-blind. It's quite common in males actually, so it's not that unusual. However, it does make it tricky while color-correcting skin-tones. I work for a wedding photography and cinematography company in Vancouver and have made a deal with the photographer --who also happens to be the owner of the company-- that him and I would collaborate on the color correction side of things. This is useful not only for my impairment, but also from a stylistic point of view.
    Now here's the problem: He has never touched Premiere or After Effects. Now instead of going through step-by-step with him, and delivering hours of footage to him on a hard drive, and having to relink all the proxies, I figured it would make a lot more sense to give him a freeze-frame that he could edit himself. Like many small businesses in this industry, we edit out of our own homes, so driving from place to place is not only inconvenient, it's also unfriendly to the environment.
    So I was mainly curious if there were a way for him to edit the freeze-frame in Lightroom or Photoshop, and then somehow export the settings so that I could import them back into Premiere. I know there are many similar tools such as RGB Curves that would be easier for him to use. Or does someone have another idea that might make this workflow more efficient? Wedding season will be starting soon to speed up turn-around before it's too late.
    Thank you in advance!

    I know you'll be shocked at this ... but over the years I've worked with a certain number of my pro stills peers who were perhaps a little set in ways that were ... um ... intractably set in them but shall we say, intriguingly unique? I'm sure this comes as such a difficult concept to grasp!
    One of the problems that came in with digital was the concept that "we" can fix anything in post. White balance? Why bother ... simple adjustment in Photoshop! And this was something that was a nightmare when the only options in-cam were 8-bit Jpeg or Tiff files. So ... RAW got into the cameras and Lightroom and you could easily tweak entire batches in Lr ... again, why worry about WB in-cam?
    Because ... it made post much faster and more accurate by getting into a much closer value on "loading" into Lr. After you've learned how to WB your camera manually and can do this quickly without even taking any gray cells ... it's so much faster over-all than "fixing" later.
    Now ... take someone who thinks of usable color as an annoyance in shooting so it's a "fix in post" thing for ... something "acceptable" ... shall we say? Give them a DSLR that takes video, and voila ... we fix that in post also, right?
    Oh my Heavens that's ... BAD. Because that person also will find making sure they have dead-on exposure a COMPLETE pain & waste of time. So the editor/colorist gets (typically) WAY under-exposed & way-off color video clips to match to the still images. DSLR video is far too "thin" in data-bits to bend much or it just completely breaks, totally different than DSLR still images these days. And you have to bend that stuff a LONG ways to look half-matching the stills!
    So ... if you can't get this dude to modify procedures based on the absolute technical needs of producing professional work in video as well as stills, you have a difficult situation. And all my sympathies. I have my partner ... who I also happen to have been married to 40 years this June ... who 1) doesn't like to have to think while shooting and 2) has her ways to get good stills down pat without thinking. How to get new patterns built in? Well ... how about spending 3-4 sessions of an hour or more simply practicing the change-over from stills/video/stills/video? It's the kind of thing I do ... however ... chance of her actually practicing like that are not something I'm gonna hold my breath waiting for. Sigh. So ... she's done a bit, been disappointed ... and just doesn't do much with it. Which could help us a lot. Eventually, I'll move her along. Wish it wasn't such a hard slug.

  • What are the best quality settings in encore for DVD production?

    Hello everyone,
    I'm Paul. I was working on a HD PROJECT 1920 by 1080 30p 50mbps. I export it is using h.264 codec which produce mp4 file in pr pro cs6. When I import it in encore and export to DVD. The quality gets so dull and blurry compare to other DVD. I did not make any changes, just import and burn. It would be very helpful if some one can suggest highest quality possible settings for DVD. I even exported my project to mpegdvd. Then tried burning it with Nero 11. Every time I get error message saying, " some of the files cannot be written on the disc"  and the quality is even worse if I use encore with this file. Today, I gave a try to Amrisoft DVD creator and the quality was awesome. I did nothing just imported mp4 and it burned it on the DVD. But I want to use encore since I bought the the whole production package. Thank you.

    You do realize, don't you, that H.264 isn't a supported CODEC on DVD? Blu-ray, yes. DVD, no. And the top bit rate for DVD is 9.8Mbps IIRC, but a more practical limit is in the 7-8Mbps range. Maximum resolution is 720x480 in NTSC contries, and 720x526 in PAL countries, again IIRC.
    So if you are coming to a DVD with 1920 x 1080 30p source at 50Mbps, a lot of information gets thrown away to make a DVD. Maybe 90% gets trashed. So it shouldn't be surprising that the resulting video looks "dull and blurry" in comparison. It should if you're only looking at 10% of the source data.
    When I've done work something like this -- making DVDs from HD sources -- I typically set AME for MPEG-2, a max bit rate of around 8Mbps, a target of around 7Mbps, and let AME do the down-sampling and re-encoding as it will. The resulting DVD looks pretty good to me. Not anything like as good as a blu-ray, but played in an upscaling blu-ray player it looks reasonably good.
    Now, it is possible to export small amounts of HD source (less than about 15 minutes worth) to DVD in blu-ray format. DVD players will choke on it since it's a foreign format, but some blu-ray layers will play it. Looks just like blu-ray for the short time that it will play. I've never done this myself though so I can't tell you how to do it.
