Color shift when pasting from CMYK document to RGB document

Hello,
We're creating an image for a client that will eventually be printed 4c process, and we have to use some very specific CMYK values. However, since we need to use certain layer effects, we need to work in RGB. I assumed that since the CMYK values we use are within the RGB gamut, there would be no color shift when copying from a CMYK doc and pasting into an RGB doc, but I'm apprently mistaken.
I'm not very familiar with color management, since we don't do any heavy duty color work in house, so this is likely a very rudimentary question: how do I keep colors from shifting when pasting from a CMYK document into an RGB document (which will eventually be converted back to CMYK for print)?
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

you have two possible issues at work that would explain a change
"out of gamut" color between color modes (the RGB colors don't translate well to CMYK)
you are discarding profile information information when pasting (and not Converting to the destination)...

Color shift printing from Lightroom 1.3

Windows Vista, HP officejet Pro L7580 printer, Lightroom 1.3, Photoshop CS3. All that being said and having used Photoshop since ver 5 with a variety of printers I find myself stumped with my latest soup of hardware and software. Screen colors do not print out anywhere close on paper when I try to print from Lightroom. Move the file over via "edit in Photoshop" and print from there and everything is fine. In Photoshop, whether Photoshop or the printer controls the color there is no problem. In Lightroom, however I have no control that I can find. I have no additional profiles so the printer controls the color. Photoshop and the printer are both set to AdobeRGB1998.icc. Other then just printing from Photoshop what am I missing in Lightroom?
By the way Adobe, in the future think about either Lightroom or Bridge but not both.

The problem :
When printing RAW or TIFF files from LR2, you get a printer output that
is much darker than it should be and that presents various color shifts.
I'm using an Epson Stylus Pro 3800 with the latest Windows driver
(6.50 - which is rather old by the way). The workaround described below
works for me under Windows XP SP3. It should also probably work with
other systems/printers/drivers. Use at your own (minor) risk.
The "official" procedure for printing from LR is as follows:
1. Do not let the printer manage colors and select "Other..." from the
profile dropdown list and select the ICC/ICM paper/printer profile that
you want to use.
2. Click on Print... in LR which opens the Print Settings dialog.
3. Select the options you need and the paper you're using.
4. *Disable the color management from the driver's side* (in Epson's
drivers, "Mode | Custom | No Color Adjustments").
5. Print
Unfortunately, *this doesn't work* for many of us and this produces a
print that is dark and has color shifts as mentioned above. Note that
the same image prints correctly from QImage or Photoshop CS3 (that is,
the printer output corresponds to what you see on your calibrated
display).
Apparently, although color management has been (allegedly) disabled in
the driver, there's something wrong between LR and the driver which
makes that both LR and the driver are still trying to manage colors. In
other words, the "No Color Adjustements" option of the driver doesn't
seem to work with LR.
The workaround (found after hours of hair pulling and paper and
expensive ink wasting):
In step #4,
1. Instead of selecting "No Color Adjustments", set Mode to "Custom |
ICM
2. Click Advanced...
3. Check "Show all profiles".
4. Select Driver ICM (Advanced)"
5. Set *both* the "Input profile" and the "Printer profile" fields to
the very same profile that you specified in LR.
That is, if you specified Pro38 PGPP (Premium Glossy Photo Paper) in LR,
then also select Pro38 PGPP in both "Input Profile" and "Printer
Profile". This has actually the same effect has disabling color
management in the driver (what "No Color Adjustements" should normally
take care of).
That's it. When printing, you'll get exactly the same color results as
when printing from QImage or Photoshop. No more dark prints. No more
color shifts.
One might think that the bug is in the Epson driver but in that case,
QImage would have the very same problem. So I tend to think that the bug
is on the Lightroom side.

Color Shifts printing from CS3 Apps

I just loaded CS3 on my system (Mac OS 10.4.10, Dual Core Intel Xeon). I have an OKI5300 laser printer. I sent my client a pdf generated through Indesign, and we are both experiencing the same problem: severe color shifts in our print-out. Indesign prints color correctly, but both Acrobat and Photoshop (I recreated the design in Photoshop by copying and pasting the elements into it) were severely out of balance. However, Acrobat 6 professional, which I still have on my system, printed the original pdf file perfectly. Your suggestions on what to do about this problem.

Problem resolved! I called in to support, as my CS3 package was brand new, and the CS rep figured it out. When printing from Acrobat 8 to a postscript laser printer, the program has a default setting in the print window, under advanced/color profile that says something like Color management by print device. He suggested I select No Color Management, use source profile. This I did and it worked. I think generally Adobe has, in the software, pretty good color management, so letting the software and not the hardware manage color is likely the best choice.
But you are likely right as well, i may also have to synchronize color spaces between software and devices.

Printing problems from iPhoto 6

For some odd reason I just can not print anything from iPhoto 6, it goes through the processes of printing, then brings up the Printer utility as if it's ABOUT to print, but then it fails and the Printer utility simply goes to "Jobs Stopped" without any further details as to WHY it stopped.
I can however print from all other apps, and even saving image to PDF, then print the PDF from Preview works...
What's going on?

Pls. help w/ weird CS4 ID color (not) printing problem

Just recently moved up from CS2 to CS4, on a Mac running OS 10.5.8 and have run into a weird problem printing to a Konica Minolta BizHub color laser printer. It first happened when the solid light blue background on an old file converted from CS2 wouldn't print. Colors applied to text in the document printed fine, as did color in a placed .eps logo. In troubleshooting here's what what I've found: I can create a brand new document, create simple rectangles filled with solid cyan, solid yellow, solid magenta and black, and only the black will print. However, color filled POLYGONS do print in color just fine--it's only filled rectangles don't print. Here's what I've already tried to fix it: I exported the file back down the chain and printed it from ID CS2 from another Mac and it printed just fine (so it's not the printer); I can print colors just fine from Illustrator CS4 on the Mac where I have the problem (so it's not the BizHub driver); I've restarted the Mac and ID several times, AND I manually trashed the ID preferences (both the Defaults and Saved Data files). No luck. Any ideas?
More info: continuing my experiments I found that converting a non-printing rectangle through the "convert shape" dialog into a round-corner rectangle allow it to print. A polygon that prints fine, no longer prints if it's converted to a rectangle through the "convert shape" dialog. So the problem is strictly related to square-cornered rectangles.

InDesign CS4 Blends and ƒx junk didn't work with our BizHub until after applying the new RIP/Driver/Firmware cocktail.
Are you running V1 or V2 Creo RIP software? If you still have a support contract you can contact Danka (now Konica Minolta digital imaging) and see about getting the new software loaded. Should be running V2.0SP1. V1 has some major kinks with CS4 ƒx, especially nasty with the gradient feather.
I've got a BizHub here if you want me to see if it works on ours too.

Printing problem from Address Book

This is driving me crazy. I am printing envelopes for Christmas cards from Address Book and I was trying the different options for printing my home address on the envelope (selecting a different font from the default and selecting a photo as an image to be included). I've now concluded I don't want to include any image when printing my home address but now can't figure out how to get rid of it. In the print menu it has a "set" button for the image, but it just takes you to a finder window to select a new image, but I can't see how to select no image at all. Can anyone help?

Hi, I had the same problem. I solved it by selecting a spacer.gif image. This is an image of 1 white pixel. This was the only way I could think of and works fine.

High Res PDF 4 color process printing problems

I'm using CS4. Our printer asks for files to be submitted as a high res PDF. When we have files printed digitally, the graphics look great, no problems. When we have files printed on the 4 color press, we have problems...i.e., white dots in the color portion of our logo (which the printer told me was the result of a black screen over the logo)...btw, there is no black screen over the logo, so I don't know what he's talking about.
My point is...I don't think there is anything wrong with the graphics, but maybe I'm not saving the files correctly to send to the printer.
I know this is a question that has probably been asked and answered a hundred times, but what options do I need to select when saving as a high res pdf for 4 color process printing? Also, should those options be different if I'm having something printed digitally?

Exact settings depend on the printer. Most commercial printers these days prefer file transparencies intact. The best setting to use in that instance is PDF/X-4. PDF/X-3 and PDF/X/1a are other choices for commercial print, but both of these outputs flatten transparency.
It is interesting that you don't have problems with digital printing. A common issue is the "Yucky Discolored Box" syndrome. This can occur if you have a drop shadow over top of a vector color fill. When you have this there is raster information adjacent to vector information. Digital presses may treat the raster and vector differently, and sometimes there is an unwanted color shift in the printed result (it's not something you see on-screen).
But if you're having success with the digital printing I wouldn't worry about that at this point. If you need more specific input concerning your file, you might want to post the file or a screen shot so the regular posters here can get handle on the logo problem.
Regarding settings for digital printers, it's best if the printer suggests the settings. Some quick print RIPs prefer RGB input, in which case you would convert to RGB when you output the PDF.

Home network printing problem from Windows 8

I have 3 PCs on my home network:
1.    Windows XP desktop (Pro SP3) with HP 6500 E709a USB printer.
2.    Windows 7 desktop (Ultimate SP1 64 bit) with HP 1018 USB printer.
3.    Windows 8 (64 bit) laptop.
Both printers are NOT Ethernet printers.
All computers can see each other and share folders on the home network.
Computers 1 & 2 can freely print on their own printers, as well as on each other's printer.
The problem is with computer 3 (Win8): it can see both printers, but can't print on either (in fact, I can print a test page on the HP 1018 printer from the printer driver on the Win8 machine, but I can't print anything from any application).
I tried to install HP 6500 driver on the Win8 machine, I turned on Network Discovery in the Advanced Sharing Settings on it, but it still doesn't work.
Any help would be appreciated.

Is there any "general puprpose" driver for HP 6500 E709a, something to replace the WIN8 driver that fails?

Printing Problem from ALV

Hi,
When I run my report, its perfectly working fine with all the data, subtotals, grand totals etc.
But when I print the ALV by clicking the PRINT Button on the Standard tool bar, My first subtotals are printing correctly. From second, its printing ZEROES and my grand totals are printing double the number as I see on the output.
This is strange and am not able to understand why I get those errors.
ANy pointers please.

I am using Function Module "REUSE_ALV_HIERSEQ_LIST_DISPLAY"
I am displaying a hierarchical ALV with subtotals, page-breaks & grand totals.
The strange thing is that my first SUBtotal gets printed properly. Its the problem from the second subtotal onwards.
Finally, the grand totals also a problem(Doubling when i print first time and triplling,if i print 2nd time ...and so on...)
ANy more clues please.

Wireless printing problem from OS X 10.2.8 and Win XP

I have three machines I want to be able to print wirelessly through my airport express. Currently, only one of them will print wirelessly - which is lousy, help.
Machine #1 is running Windows XP. It connects to the internet through the airport express just fine, no problem there. The problem is connecting to the printer. Machine #1 will print just fine when I connect the USB directly to the computer, but wirelessly I can't figure out how to hook it up properly through the airport express to the printer. The part I keep getting hung up on is that the airport express manual says to add another printer put in 10.0.1.1 for the IP address, but when I do so, the machine says that that address is already taken and it beeps at me real loud and gives me an error message - end of story. I suspect I need another IP address, but I can't figure out where to find it. Help.
Machine #2 is my old ibook G3, which is running Mac OS X 10.2.8. The airport express should be able to make it so I can print wirelessly from machine #2, but this one is not working out either. Machine #2 connects to the internet just fine, and when I connect the printer manually to machine #2 it prints just fine. When I try to print wirelessly, through the airport express, it starts out ust fine, the printer begins to print, then all of a sudden, as if for no reason, it "stops the job". I "start the job" back up through the print center, and then it "stops the job" again. we play this game a bit, but I never get farther than printing the first few lines of my print job. It never really makes any progress, it just pretends like ti might if it felt like it. In this case, I've been looking online for some software patch that would fix this problem - looked on the apple site and on the epson site, and haven't made any progressfor many hours. Help!
Machine #3 has no problems. It surfs the internet, plays music on my stereo and prints wirelessly without any trouble at all. It is my new ibook G4 running OS X 10.4. Is it possible to get machine #1 and machine #2 able to print wirelessly just like machine #3? (i'd like all three machines to be able to stream music to my stereo too, but I don't want to push my luck. I'll be ecstatic if I can get these other two machines to print wirelessly. I'm so tired of having to pull that printer cable out from under the couch everytime I need to print something.)

for the mac, me thinks that i am out of luck with updating the driver. on the epson site the most recent drivers for my printer (epson sytlus photo 820) are for OS X 10.1.3 - 10.2.6, and I am running OS X 10.2.8.
Hmmmm, I downloaded the driver anyway, and it gives me an APPLICATION LAUNCH FAILURE because of a "shared library error" when I try to launch the new drivers. The other thing on the site is a PIM II Plug In - which doesn't look like a driver to me.

Odd Printing Problem from BO 6.5.1

Hi, I have been asked to support BO 6.5.1 users and some of them create .pdf files which don't print correctly. The heading boxes, table structures and formatting are retained but the text is replaced with random characters. The docs look fine on screen, it is only when they are printed out that the problem occurs. I am sure I have ruled out printing problems, email problems and Adobe 8.0 problems, particularly because this is only happening with pdf's from BO sent to any printer and so I feel it must be a fault with BO. Has anyone seen this before? Grateful for any advice

Printing Problems from iMac G4 to HP Photosmart 7760-photos heavy on pink!

We have an iMac G4 Flat Panel using OS 10.3.9 and are connected to the HP Photosmart 7760 Printer. The printer is printing heavy on the pink side photographs.
When we print directly from our camera card, the printer prints fine. True colors. When we print using any software application, (ie Photoshop, iPhoto) the printer prints extremely heavy on the pink side. We have installed new cartridges, have cleaned and calibrated the printer, have unplugged and restarted the printer and still to no avail we have pink tinted photographs.
Could someone help please?

Printing problem from home to office

I have an HP1606dn laser printer which works fine when I am in the school building. However, all of a sudden, if I try to print wirelessly from home (which I have been doing for 2 years), I get the message that the printer is offline and I cannot print. Apparently, the printer is not turning on automatically if I am using a VPN. Any suggestions?

Are you using Windows or AppleTalk printing to connect to the 2003 server?
Have you tried deleting the printer from the server and re-installing it? Tried re-installing the driver and PPD for the Phaser? Also, have you tried deleting the printer from the Macs and reconnecting?
Do your server's Event Logs show anything?

Tabloid duplex printing problem from CS4 (Acrobat and InDesign)

I cannot print a two-page tabloid (landscape mode) pdf document properly from a MacBook Pro or a Mac Pro running 10.6.2 using Adobe Products (Acrobat 8 or 9, or InDesign CS3 or CS4) to an HP LJ5550DN. The printed version prints on both sides of the paper, but the right 1/4 of each page doesn't print. Furthermore, if I reboot and print just one side, it prints fine, but when I select duplex I get this problem and if I try to print just one side again, it prints w/o the 1/4 of the right side of the paper.
I can print the tabloid duplex correctly using Preview on the same computers. I can also print correctly using Acrobat 7 from a Mac G4 running Mac OS 10.4.11. I can print a single tabloid sheet correctly from Illustrator CS3 or CS4 from the Snow Leopard computers, but since Illustrator doesn't handle more than one page, can't send it duplex.
I conclude that the problem is the Adobe software under Snow Leopard. If you know what is wrong with the Adobe software, please send me the fix - it would streamline the process.

I'm having exactly the same problem, with a 5500dn. As with you, the problem is present in both CS3 and Acrobat 8 and 9, and I can print a duplex A3/tabloid PDF correctly with Preview. (only the colour balance is rubbish!)
Mac OS 10.6.2, print driver HP Color Laserjet 5500 v3010.107 (although it's obviously not the driver).
Needless to say, any solution to this needs to address CS3 and later apps.
