Color Smoothing 4:1:1 or 4:2:2 (before key in ProRes)

I'm working on some green screen stuff in FCP and I'm wondering what the difference is between the 4:1:1: Color Smoothing tool and the 4:2:2 . Both seem clean when I use the chroma key tool (and I don't see any difference).  I'm working with video that was shot in HDV and imported into FCP as ProRes (standard).

So the correct answer is - ProRes 422 is 4:2:2 (at least for compositing purposes). For those interested in learning more, here's the Apple White paper on the subject:
http://images.apple.com/finalcutstudio/resources/white_papers/L342568A_ProRes_WP .pdf
It doesn't matter that the video started life as HDV - the fact that it is encoded as ProRes makes it 4:2:2 from there-on (or until I output it as something else).

  • DVCAM to ProRess - Clip Analyze - Color Smoothing

    Hello,
A few questions that I'll try to make brief. I'd really appreciate someone experienced giving their outlook.
1 - I've got an old DVCAM project captured and backed up to a hard drive. I'm just pulling the project out again to get it as nice as possible for a master copy and DVD; finish it off as best as possible.
Should I use media manager to recompress to ProRess(HQ) for PAL if I'm going to be doing extensive color grading?
2 - When I look at the clips in the timeline with the analyze tool it says Codec: DV - Pal at Medium Quality. When I check other (my original captured files - before I used media manager on the whole project) those files say Codec: DV - Pal at Most Quality.
Should I be re-creating my project from the original captured files, as the one's my timeline is referencing (after using Media Manager to consolodate the project) say Medium Quality?
I assume, if so, I should do this before the ProRess conversion process, right?
3 - I've heard of using a color smoothing filter before the conversion process to ProRess, but my footage is DVCAM PAL 4:2:0. Does that mean I just skip any color smoothing step, or is there another process for those coming from a 4:2:0 color space?
Thanks so much for any help,

  • 4:2:0 Color Smoothing Filter for HDV? keying HDV

having fun here trying to key a green screen music video shot in HDV..
thought it would be nice to try FCP's plugins on it... including some sort of "pre-blur" but unfortunately i don't see a color smoothing for 4:2:0 color space in which HDV shoots..
any suggestions on what the best way to key this stuff is

Try the G Chroma Sharpen filters in Film Effects (www.nattress.com), which were designed for this. They do 4:2:0 smoothing, and then sharpen the chroma based upon luma detail to get the best edge possible.

  • Chroma key - color smoothing filter renders vertical lines

several vertical lines appear in render (or QT output), but if I turn the color smoothing filter off they disappear (at the cost of messy chromakey).
These lines do NOT appear when the playback is stopped on (unrendered) timeline or when using play every frame (option + P).
I am using a 720p60 Prores 422 sequence. Interestingly if I output to mpeg2 via Compressor the lines do not appear (but poor HD to SD downscale - hence why I seek QT prores output)
For the moment I turn it off and mess with the chroma keyer controls to clean it up.

Using 4:2:2 smoothing, upstream (above) the keyer, meant to say 720p50 PAL sequence and clips captured via Io Express direct to Prores.

  • Automatic Duplex Printing not working on HP Color LaserJet 3600DN in Windows 7. It worked before.

I have an HP color laserjet 3600 DN on Windows 7.  This computer came w/ Windows Vista and a 3600DN driver was installed and the computer was upgraded to Windows 7.  The printer did automatic duplex printing.
At one point, my computer indicated that it could no longer find the printer.  In an effort to solve this problem, I uninstalled the printer. When I tried to reinstall the printer the computer could not find the driver. At that point I tried to download a windows 7 CLJ 3600 DN driver.  Since HP doesn't provide this driver for Windows 7, I tried to download the Windows Vista driver for 3600DN.
However, when I go to the appropriate webpage by following the links, only drivers for Color Laserjet 3600 are listed (no 3600DN drivers).
As far we can tell it only allows Manual Duplex printing (no automatic duplex printing).  Clicking the "Two Sided Duplex Printing" option is there but only works when the "print on both sides (Manual)" is set on the Finishing page.  If manual is turned off, then it becomes single sided.
Can I get a driver that will allow me to do automatic duplex printing on on my HP CLJ 3600 DN using Windows 7?

How did you replave the duplex belt? How to deassemble the backside of a officejet and click the new belt on? I can't see nor do it y self

    Hi Idreier,
I'd try starting Firefox in [[Safe Mode]]. If you don't have the issue while all of your add-ons, extensions, and themes are disabled, you can try adding them back in one by one until you find the culprit.

  • Sony HDR-HC3 to FCP to Color to FCP to Mac Mini

    Hi,
My objective is to play our edited family videos using our Mac Mini(2.0 GHz Core 2) on a Sony 52" LCD at full 1080 resolution. The video is stored on a Firewire attached 1 TB LaCie external disk.
I use a Sony HDR-HC3 video camera (HDV 1440x1080i 25 fps) and use FCP 6.0.4 for editing. I have recently been learning Color for grading.
    1. Currently reading footage into FCP as ProRes 422. Footage comes in with the following profile:
    Sequence Preset: Apple ProRes 422 1440x1080 50i 58 kHz
    Capture Preset: HDV-Apple ProRes 422
Current captured footage I'm working with has a data rate of 12.5 MB
    2. Once editing is complete, I "Send To" Color and perform the grading
    3. From Color, I "Send to FCP". (It asks "Change graded FCP seq. to match the QT export codec?" not sure whether I click Yes or No here)
    4. After selecting Yes, the footage returned back to a new sequence in FCP now has the following profile:
    Apple ProRes 422 (HQ)
    1920x1080
    21.6 MB/sec
From reading the Apple documentation, I was expecting something funny to happen coming back from Color.
    5. I then send this sequence to Compressor where I select the "Apple | Formats | Quicktime | H.264" preset in the hope that I can render out an H.264 1920x1080 file to play on the Mac Mini. It renders it but the Mini can't play the video smoothly.
As I am still learning, I would appreciate any suggestions on an alternative workflow that can lead me to a 1080 video file that can play smoothly on the Mac Mini.
The Apple TV preset renders a video that works smoothly on the Mini, but I'm hoping for the full resolution.
    Regards, Tony

    Hi Shane,
Thanks so much for responding. Great tutorial also. And I wasn't conscious of any 'drone'...
Yes, I've tried to have the Log and Transfer recognize the card (through both the card reader and lately, by using the camera as a deck but without luck). The card reader and camera mount on my desktop as NO NAME and when I ADD VOLUME I scroll down to devices and click on NO NAME but L&T doesn't recogize the source and nothing happens. That's why I went in to see if the AVCHD folder might be recognized and got that invalid directory message. Following your tutorial I went into preferences button on the right hand upper corner of the L&T interface and selected the AVCHD - Apple Prores LT path in case that made a difference, but no go. Any other suggestions/thoughts?
    Cheers, Mark

  • I'm having a hard time understanding the best way I should have my color settings, set. Can I get someone's help with this?

I am scanning old photographs with an Epson V750 Pro and have a question on how my Photoshop should be set, or how the scanner should be set.
I have Photoshop 7.0 and it works fine, but I have started scanning some old photographs with my new Epson V750 Pro scanner and every time I go to open a scanned photograph, I receive a message reading:
My Photoshop's color setting are "custom" set: I never changed anything, but this is how I've always ued it and have never had any problem before. Is there a better way it should be set?
Right now these are the Color Settings:
Should any of these settings be different? If something in Photoshop should be changed, what should I do? I don't want to be asked this every time I open a scanned image.
Or, should any of the settings in the Epson Scanner when scanning?
    Right now:
The other color settings available are 48-bit Color and Color Smoothing, but sometimes when I use the 48-bit Color, Photoshop will give me an error when I go to save the edited scan, telling me there isn't enough space to save it. I have no idea why this happens because there is plenty of space, but I end up having to change the scan to 300dpi to save it.
Well, I don't know if any of this makes since, but I would love to receive any help. I would like to understand why I am having this problem and how the color settings should be, so I don't have this trouble anymore.
    Thanks,
    Sean

In Epson Scan, click Configuation at the bottom of the main window, and try these settings.
If it doesn't work, I think it'll  be ok converting to sRGB in Photoshop,
Edit: You can set PS to convert to sRGB automatically under Color Settings > Color Management  Policies > RGB.
But if you can control it from Epson Scan, that's probably preferrable.

  • Smooth animation in Flash CS5.5??

I've been workin in Flash for some years now and I've animated a lot of elements during these years.
But now I seem to have a problem getting my stuff to animate in a smooth way (it hasn't been a problem before).
I've created a car (cartoonstyle) entirely i Flash - vectorbased - and I want it do move across the screen.
The problem is that it animate in a non-smooth way (it seem to get "chopped" - like the frames just "jump" from one frame to the next).
    I've tried to change the FPS (I've tried 12, 15, 16, 20, 24, 25, 29 and 30 (and also 29,97)) but with no luck.
The idea is to have the car to drive in to an autoshop, so the speed of the car shouldn't be too fast...
I'm workin on a short animation and the screen is 1920x1080.
As I mentioned I have been working with Flash for some years, but either I'm overworked (believe me, that DOES happen to the most of us at some point... and very often at times I guess ..) or there's something that I've totally missed out on (because of Alzheimer, etc.).
I've uploaded the swf-fil for you to take a look at: http://mediacom-design.no/flashStuff/MiniMorris.swf
Any one have any ideas about this??
    Thanks for all help!!

Ah, the age old video issue. What you consider smooth is greatly affected by a lot of factors.
24FPS modern video is not allowed to pan a camera too fast. The human eye will notice the frame jumping too far for 24fps to make it look 'smooth'. The only way to move the same distance and keep it smooth is increase the FPS or make the movement lesser.
You can do up to 4 things to help you out, one is just a 'chance'. From easiest to potentially least successful:
    1. Increase framerate to 60. That means the car moves less pixels per update and will "look" smoother.
    2. Increase time. Move the vehicle slower over a longer time doing the same exact thing as #1, and even the opposite can work (move it insanely fast while easing it out so the user doesn't "notice" the bog)
    3. Add in blur (a X-axis blur may help a bit, I'm skeptical).
    4. At 30fps (minimum) it may be choaking your machine on too many hefty "MovieClips". You can lighten the load of flash so it doesn't need to render the vectors in 2 ways
note: both of these can be done at the same time
       a) Go in the library and for every part of the car check the linkage for actionscript and change the base class of the clip from flash.display.MovieClip to flash.display.Sprite on anything without animation
       b) Set cacheAsBitmap on any part of the car that does not rotate, scale or change opacity (it can move though)
If you cacheAsBitmap, set your fps to 60 and slow down your overall movement, I'm sure it will get silky smooth.
Designers can keel over at #4 so here's a super uber quick pic to help visually:
#1 double click a library item to get symbol properties and check export for actionscript
#2 is enabled now, change MovieClip to Sprite (lot less computational overhead)
#3 shows you the color of the clip turns green (it's a Sprite!)
#4 has an INSTANCE of this clip on stage selected and is looking at the properties of it and shows you where the dropdown position for cacheAsBitmap is.

  • Help need to change black & white pic to add some color?

I have Adobe Photoshop Elements 8 and Im tryin to find where I can take a black and white pic I took today few of and want to add some color to few areas on it like flowers ect..
Ive been tryiin to find out where it says in the book but I cant find it.
Also, how does one place a watermark of somekind on my pics like a small one down in a corner?
    Thanks, appreciate it!

There are several ways to do this. Here are a few.
One way, is to create a blank layer over your image. Change this blank layer's blend mode to either color blend mode or soft light blend mode. Use the paint brush to apply color(s).
You might also consider using a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer over your image.  If you have a color in mind, make that your foreground color in the tool box before you create a hue/saturation adjustment layer. After you create the layer, change it's blend mode to either color or soft light. Fill the mask with black to hide the effect. Grab the paintbrush tool and select white as your foreground color. Paint where you want color applied to your photo. (If you over paint switch to black and paint over mistakes.) You can apply a little bit of Gaussian blur on the mask to make the edges transition from black and white to color smoother.)
Another possibility is to duplicate your image then use color variations to color the duplicate. Once happy with the coloration, use eraser to remove color you don't desire or better yet use a clipping mask with an adjustment layer as the base so you can mask the image and use black/white paint to define areas that will be colored.

  • Chroma key through Color

Any suggestions on basic workflow for sending a chroma keyed composite through Color.
I'd want to set the key prior to color correction and then color correct the foreground (keyed) image separate from the background.
My only guess at this point is to: 1. Set the key in Final Cut, including Color Smoothing if necessary 2. Do a preliminary color correction to both foreground and background using the 3-way CC 3. Send these to Color where the Primary room is set based on the 3-way from FCP
Is there a way to see the composite in Color (using alpha?) and color correct layers individually?
I'm probably missing something pretty simple...

Is there a way to see the composite in Color (using alpha?) and color correct layers individually?
    Respectively: No. and Yes.
No, there is no way to see the composite in Color -- it is not compositing software,
and Yes, you do grade the layers individually. You might be able to get a very rough idea of the fg/bg plate balance using the still store.

  • Color Space Management & Final Color Output-not WYSIWYG?

I have constantly had problems with getting final output color to match what i am seeing on my monitors when color correcting. This has been a continual problem mainly with R3d footage and going to Prores...but for the sake of this discussion here is my prime example:
Start a new project in PrPro and clor from PrPro adding effects, 3 way color, 3rd party effects like Finesse and Colorista...then output the project to Tiff for master then convert from Tiff sequence to Prorest; H264 or anything else....But, when i output a prores file, and then open the prores file on its own--not brining it back into Premier...i notice a shift in colors....completely desaturated etc...this happens whehter i choose for gamma as "auto" or "none" when choosing codec settings for prores. I've had this continual problem for many years and the ONLY way i have found it to work is by using Apple's Color and then going to Prores....seems apple hardware and software work well together...but this cannot be an isolated incident with me only...AND coloring a project on your desktop and putting all that work into it and seeing it DIFFERENT at the end of the day is more than a let down...
...so maybe a discussion on properly setting a project for color work is in order...I came across another forum members website reToolednet and he had some great info on setting up the sequence timeline and video preview area that is great info...but even when i do that i cannot get a perfect match at the end of the output....Exapmples below all done in PrPro and then output to Prores 4444.
I've found info on Adobe site that does not seem current about setting project settings and color space, but no place in PrPro do i find that setting...is this only AE?  OR...can we even do a proper color job within PrPr?  or should that be done elsewhere?
Id like to go through the proper steps of setting workspace and color schemes for say a Prores output since that is likely 75% to 90% of everyone's deliverables in the tv realm....
Snapsot of Tiff sequence WITHIN PrPro (colored)
Final Output from PrPro to Prores--snap from actual QT prores file--(Desaturated)
When i began this project i had my sequence settings to R3d 1080p @ 29.97 and video previews to Iframe....
**NOW, i think i would have been better off to change video preview to my final output of Prores 4444...BUT, i tried that and still see a color shift.
**Note, i oriingally colored this on 5.5 with Matrox out to my color corrected monitors....and results on those monitors DO and WILL be diffrent than what you see on your computer screen....my monitors were set to rec709 and RGB at end of the line for viewing....but i see nothing within PrPro on how to set this....however at end of the day i do not get what i see on my preview monitors....

Thanks Jim....yes, i'm covered on all cc monitors and quite used ot viewing output on color calibrated...as well viewing both on the same platform/monitor....The BIG question is PrPr being able to do color work---and my question is why would it have all the color effects if it did not?  But i agree with you....first place to start is can you do proper color work on PrPr AT ALL?  no problem to do a quick web video...but can you properly color a for television product---I seem to think NO....i could not get colors in end to match....i can view out on PrPr view my I/O box (Matrox MXO2) and see great colors that i colored the project on to my FSI color corrected monitor....but then when i view the ProRes file back (not on PrPro)...but on it's own with its own codec engine...this is where things go awry and stray from colors i originally put on the images...
But this is a PARAMOUNT subject as Pr is offering coloring....i hate to bring this in, but in FCP i can get accurate colors on my Matrox and same when rendered out to Prores file....Again, i think Apple plays well with apple.....but as you say, there are a great number of varialbes involved in the preferences etc...within PrPr...seems to me AE may be better just by reading about it...but why not both?

  • How to set the Background Color of a Text Field in a Tabular Report.

    Hello,
I tried to set the Background Color of a Text Field in a Tabular Report.
But I was not able to change this colur.
In the report attributes --> column attributes
    I tried already:
    1. Column Formating -- >CSS Style (bgcolor: red)
    2. Tabular Form Element --> Element Attributes (bgcolor: red)
    but nothing worked.
    Can anybody help me?
    I Use Oracle Apex 2.2.1 on 10gR2
    thank you in advance.
    Oliver

in "Report Attributes" select the column to move to the "Column Attributes" page. In the "Element Attributes" field under the "Tabular Form Element" region enter
    style="background-color:red;"
I will also check if there is a way to do this via the template and post here again
    edit:
in your template definition, above the template, enter the following:
    < STYLE TYPE="text/css" >
    .class INPUT {background-color:red;}
    < /STYLE >
(remove the spaces after the < and before the >)
change "class" to the class that the template is calling
(I'm using theme 9, the table has: class="t9GCCReportsStyle1" so I would enter t9GCCReportsStyle1)
A side-effect of using this second version is that ALL input types will have a red background color--checkboxes, input boxes, etc.
