Color Space Issue: One Black On Screen But Two Blacks When Printed

I work at a print shop (using Windows 7 and Adobe Acrobat X) and often receive PDFs from customers that were created from PowerPoint. These PowerPoint PDFs often present a printing issue when there are black objects in the file.
On screen, there will be only one consistent shade of black but when the document is printed, it becomes evident that there are actually two different blacks in the file, one darker than the other.
I have done a lot of online research (including these forums) in an attempt to find a complete solution that will always work for these problem-files but have yet to find one.
I know that the issue stems from the fact that PowerPoint uses RGB colors and not CMYK like printers but trying to manually convert color spaces in Adobe Acrobat Pro to be uniform did not help. Whether I convert the entire document's color space to CMYK or just individual objects, I always get the two shades of black when printing. Can anyone explain why this isn't working for me?
I have used the Output Preview tool to determine that the two blacks in the documents are almost always C0-M0-Y0-K100 and C75-M68-Y67-K90. I have read that a custom Preflight fix can be created to seek out all instances of one black and convert it to the other but I did not have success when trying this method. I must be doing something wrong. After running my fix, I always get a message about how no issues are found. If someone can post a step-by-step guide on how to create a Preflight fix that will resolve this issue, I would really appreciate it.
I have uploaded three sample PDFs that I'm currently working with. Please feel free to review and troubleshoot them. My goal is to uncover a solution that I can apply to all three files to get them to print with one consistent black.

Thank you all so much in advance for any insight you can offer.

So sorry about that. I have Published all three files now so they should be accessible to the public.

  • PDF looks fine on screen but text does not print

PDF created from Word looks fine on screen but text does not print (graphics do). Alos loses text on FTP or Email.  Windows 8.1 64bit. Acrobat XI Std. Word2013. Print to PDF from Word 600dpi, use doc fonts, download as softfont. Arial, calibrai - all fonts lost. Same issue as Phillipio61 and alacker2?.

Problem not with all fonts.  Problem with arial and calibri fonts - maybe others.  Times New Roman, gil sans, viner are OK for example.

  • Color Space Issue?

This is probably a very simple issue which I'm hoping someone can easily figure out. I process my images to taste in LR4 and then export them as jpgs in the sRGB color space. When I open them in programs like "Windows Picture Viewer" they look just like they do in LR but when I upload it to my website or view it in a program like IrfanView the images look terribly over-saturated. I should also mention that it seems like I need to add quite a bit more saturation than normal to get them looking right in LR. I'm guessing that there is some setting that I have wrong. Can any one help me figure out what it might be?
Thanks! I really appreciate this great forum and all the helpful people on here!

I believe that even with that switch, it ignores image profiles, assuming all images to be sRGB.  In other words, it can be persuaded to respect monitor profiles but not image profiles.  At best it does half the job!
It used to be that way, but I've not tested it recently.

  • Color Space Issue with Wide-Gamut monitor

Since getting my new (and carefully calibrated) LaCie 324 monitor, I have noticed that RAW (and maybe other) images exported from Lightroom as
sRGB jpegs look washed out and slightly green when viewed outside of Lightroom (IE8, Firefox, ACDSee, windows 7 viewer). It seems not to matter whether the external application horors embedded color space profiles or not, since the unmanaged ones assume sRGB.
When I bring one of these jpegs into PhotoShop it still looks bad, and not what I see in Lightroom. However, if I Assign the Adobe RGB profile to the image, it immediately looks like the Lightroom version. And if I then Convert that image to sRGB and save it, it looks fine everywhere, even on an uncalibrated standard Dell TN LCD display.
Any ideas what I might be seeing here. A friend with the same monitor has the same problem, which is what is leading me to suspect the monitor.
The first image here is converted from Lightroom with sRGB color space. The second was first assigned the Adobe RGB color profile and then converted and saved out again as a jpeg.
    Converted Only

I downloaded and ran the program. My version number appears to be 2.1 if I read the numbers right.
I am still at a loss as to why my sRGB jpegs only look right if I assign the wrong profile to them.
Here are the settings in Windows 7 for color management. The highlighted profile is the one just created for my monitor. Display 2 is my main display. Note the "viewing conditions" setting on the advanced tab. Do you think the rendering intent might be at fault here? In Lightroom, should I use Perceptual over Relative or vice versa?

Thanks you. Problem is solved. The cable wasn't plugged in properly.
In spite of video rendering smoothly, audio started coming only when I disconnected the cable and plugged it in hard.

  • I tried to restart my iPad2 beacuse of email issues and now the screen is all black, I can't open it anymore...

My screen is all black except that white wainting sign... what should I do?  Pressing down the sleep/start button doesn't change anything.

Have you tried a reset: hold the sleep/power button and home button, ignore the slider, and let it restart.
Have you tried connecting to iTunes and see if it recognizes and can reset, not retore unless all else fails.

  • Setting Black and White as the default when printing to a Canon Image Class 4080i

    Hi,
I've got two Canon Image Class 4080i's that we are printing to at the school I work at.  I have installed the Canon UFRII V2.40 Printer Driver for Mac OS X and we are able to print to them fine through any macbook running 10.5 to 10.7.  My question is, how do I make the default printer setting be Black and White instead of color?  I know how to change it from Color to Black and White by navigating to the Quality menu through the Print screen but I have to do this every time I print.  Is there a way to make black and white the default?
    Thanks in advance,
    Cheryll

You’re really going to take photos straight out of camera on a 5d3 and print them with a blindly applied B&W conversion from the printer?  I would highly discourage that, but if that’s what you want to do I’m sure it’s possible.  Sorry, I have no experience with that printer so I can’t help.
Do you have a laptop?  My recommendation would be to use a photo processing software like Lightroom (if you don’t have it LR5 is ridiculously cheap right now), play around before the event to get a B&W conversion that you like – even the preset ones are going to be better than whatever conversion the printer does -  and then print from LR.  It’d hardly take any extra time, and you could get a brief review of the conversions on a laptop screen before printing.

  • Objects missing when exporting to PDF, but show up when printing to PDF

Hi - I'm working with someone, both of us in InDesign CS4, and she has some documents that cause a few random objects to just go missing when exported to PDF (same on my computer). But when printing to PDF, they show up fine. They also show up fine if we recreate each individual object, but that can end up being a lot of work. She prefers to export to PDF because of quality. I'm drawing a blank on this one!
The attached file shows the issue. The green blocks just don't want to show up when exporting.

    Peter -
The links are just the PDFs of the black and white portions and don't really matter too much since they show up fine when exporting or printing to PDF. Our main concern is the green blocks, which are indeed the green areas of the plan you pointed out. They are actually separate objects created directly within InDesign that can be moved and adjusted.
I just updated to 6.0.4 and that didn't help. I wonder if this may be a variant of the bugs I was reading about with master pages and certain things not showing up when creating PDFs or printing (even though none of these things are on the master page)?
    Thanks

  • Photos look great edited in LR 3 but extremely grainy when printed

I said I would take photos at a friends wedding and now I just want to cry.
I edited raw photos in LR3 - they look great in LR. I export them to a folder and they still look great on a large screen. But then I sent them off to print. It wasn't so much the colours that annoyed me it was the grain and sharpening in the photo, it looks terrible. I only realised this after I gave her the photos on disk and she spent money printing 1000 crap photos...
I have never had this issue before. I am just doing a light edit - small crop on some, don't know if its the export process.
I have played around and what seems to work is moving the luminance to close to 85-100 and sharpening to 0. I just want to know is that right do it it that way or am I missing a major thing.
When I do an export from lightroom. Its jpeg format sRGB, quality - 80, resolution 240
This bit I am unsure of...I have ticked sharpen output as set for matte paper, amount - standard.
If anyone could help me out soon I would really appreciate it, as it would save me using a lot of tissues as I am quite frustrated.

    I have attached 3 photos.
When I took the photos I shot as both raw and jpeg. I have attached the following:
    https://www.dropbox.com/sh/5ebbdi4o3u14wk3/CZWB8wJcce/Grainy%20Photos?lst
      a.. the original raw photo
b.. the jpeg that came with it (as is out of the camera)
      c.. the final edited jpeg
d.. A screen print of the image uploaded to printing lab (It will look grainy around the hair line...but that's the problem)
I have played around a fair bit. All looks great in LR and when I get out of LR and open them up full screen out of windows explorer they look good too.
It was only when the bride complained about the blurriness, I then tried uploading the final high resolution file to RGB Digital Labs that you could see how bad they were.
Last night I was playing around and I tried uploading the jpeg straight out of the camera to RGB labs and that too was bad. So I am starting to think would it be the camera, but then again when they look so good after editing why would they look bad at print time. Photo was taken at f$ 1/200 shutter speed and ISO 320 (so it’s not like I didn’t have light) I had a flash as well
I think I am going to have a mental breakdown!!!
So far from what I have found to get the picture looking ok  Sharpness is “0”and luminance is set to 100 – so too extremes which just does not seem right, I have never had to do this before.
    Any help would be great
    Thanks
    Sara

  • Get rid of the white space at the top and bottom of the report when Printing as PDF document

    Hello All,
I have a wider tablix report which is 29 inches wide. I have given the paper size as custom and width as 29 and height as 11 in report properties.I have deployed it and saved it as PDF document. When I print preview the report I am using the paper size as
tabloid (17 by 11) and selected the orientation as Landscape. I am getting the full report without any stripping but I am getting some extra space at the top and bottom when I print the report. Can anyone help me how to get rid of this space? . I checked the
margins for the report and it was 0in. Please help.
    Thank You

    Hi There
In Reporting Services (SSRS 2008), there are white spaces preserved in the report body by default. When the white space extends the body size beyond the width of the report, blank pages will be generated. To avoid the issue, you can set the “ConsumeContainerWhiteSpace”
property of the report to “True”.
Please try to adjust your margins (top + side) and hopefully this problem will get resolved
Body Width <= Page Width - (Left Margin + Right Margin)
    Horizontal usable area:
    X = Page.Width - (Left Margin + Right Margin + Column Spacing)
    Vertical usable area:
    Y = Page.Height - (Top Margin + Bottom Margin + Header Height + Footer Height)
Body Width <= Page Width - (Left Margin + Right Margin)
    Horizontal usable area:
    X = Page.Width - (Left Margin + Right Margin + Column Spacing)
    Vertical usable area:
    Y = Page.Height - (Top Margin + Bottom Margin + Header Height + Footer Height)

  • Has anyone else had the issue of the the screen randomly flashing black only when using Messages app in landscape?

I have been having an issue with the screen flashing black for several seconds then turning back on. This olny occurs in the Messages app and only in landscape mode. I have never noticed the issue in any other app. The issue is 100% repeatable. Has anyone else had this issue or know of any solutions to what seems to be a bug?
    -iPhone 5s running iOS 7.1
    KCM

I think this is an issue with the phone's proximity sensor (the one that turns the screen off when you hold it up to your ear). It's a bug that seems to occur when you switch to another app (any app) while still on a phone call. You'll notice in Messages that the screen goes dark when you move your thumb over the earpiece/iSight camera, but not when you move your other thumb.
Simplest solution is to force-quit the Messages app (double-click the home button, and swipe up on the app). The problem should resolve itself when you restart Messages.

  • Linear Color Space Issue

I've run into an interesting issue using 16bit linear exrs in AE.
All of my 3D footage is rendered in 16 bit linear space, and I am rendering to sRGB IEC611966-2.1 in AE.
I have various color corrections in the comp.  When I export a frame from the comp, and then reimport that frame into the same comp, it is brighter than the comp that it was exported from.
I've exported to both png and openEXR with the same result.
In PShop, I've confirmed that the exported png and exr are identical in color (after reducing the exr to 8bit).  I also know that the color corrections have been applied in the saved frames, because I screen captured the AE screen and pasted it on top of the saved frames in PShop - no color shift.
My guess is that the re-imported frames are not in the correct colorspace, but I've tried a few using 'interpret footage' w/no luck.
    Any ideas?

    Never mind.
