Color swatch ONLY shows gray shades on gradient layer...?

My color swatch seems to be defaulting to only shades of gray on a gradient layer, and I simply cannot figure out how to get it to change to the color I have selected. After I create a new gradient fill layer, when I have the layer selected in the list of layers on the right side of the screen, the color swatches show ONLY gray. If I click on the swatch, it brings up the color picker, but no matter what color I select, the swatch shows shades of gray. If I select the background layer, it goes back to showing my color.
There is probably a simple explanation to this problem but I have been searching Google for literally hours without finding an answer. Other similar questions I have found have the response of "Go to Image, Mode, and make sure RGB is selected." Mine is already set to RGB, so that's not the issue.
How do I change the colors of a gradient fill layer, and why does my color swatch show only gray shades when I have the gradient fill layer selected, even though clicking the swatch brings up the color picker?

To change/edit the gradient color(s), double click on the Gradient Fill thumbnail in the layers panel
Then in the Gradient Fill dialog, click just to the right of the word gradient to edit the colors
In the gradient editor, click on one of the color stops at the bottom of the gradient bar and click on Color to change the color of that stop

The reason your color keeps showing as grayscale, is the layer mask is always active with adjustments layers in photoshop elements and layer masks are grayscale

Color Picker (Color Window) only shows "Crayons" in Pages...

Greetings, In Pages '09, the color picker is now only showing the "Crayon" color picker. Earlier today, it let me choose Color Wheel, RGB, CMYK, and other pickers. It does not even show any of these other options in Pages! These other pickers are still available in Keynote. I have tried deleting and reinstalling iWork, and still just have the Crayons in Pages. I have tried deleting "com.apple.iWork09.plist" and I still just have the Crayons, with no option to choose any other color picker. Am I doing something wrong? Where are the other pickers? How do I get them back?

You may have picked the wrong preference list because you made the wrong assumption. In your post you are making the assumption that the Colour Picker is part of Apple iWork.
If instead you were to assume that the Colour Picker is part of the operating system then you would want to try deleting NSColorPanelSwatches.plist.
Internally, the Colour Picker is a client of ColorSync and the swatches, if memory serves, are represented as ICC NMCL Named Colour profiles.

Gradient only showing gray scale

I am trying to create a colored button in IL CS3, and when I open the gradient box, I am only getting a gray scale option- no colors to choose from. If I go to Color Palette, I can apply only a solid color. Back to Gradient, still only gray...arrgh. I am new to Illustrator but this seems too basic. In tutes I am reading, the Gradient opens with a color palette too. How do I get that? thnx!

You can drag a swatch on to the gradient slider to set a color or select one of the sliders, go up to color--set you color space in the pull down menu and enter your values there.

Why is my color picker not showing up in the gradient panel?

When I try to change the colors to a gradient I am not able to change the selected color.
When I double click on the color slider I want to change, the pop up panel gives me grayed out CMYK sliders. And all of the fill and stroke icons go dark and display questions marks ????.
When I click on the swatch button no swatch colors appear in the panel.
Am I missing something obvious here? I haven't had this issue before today. I am running the latest version of CC on a windows 7 64 bit machine. Please help! I need my gradients! I can't live with out them!

I drew my shape, then went to the GRADIENT panel and clicked in the default gradient box to apply the default white to black gradient. Normally you can click on either color to change it using the ways I described in my original post but those are not available to me. The only way I could add a color was to drag it from the SWATCHES panel into the gradient colors slider.
This means that I cannot make changes to colors directly in the gradient panel like before. I have to make changes to the individual colors but clicking on the color in the gradient slider then going to the COLOR panel and adjusting the color there. Or by dragging in a whole new color from the COLOR or SWATCHES panels. This is really killing my work flow.

My Adobe XI only shows gray pages when I try to scan to my drive from an Epson WF-3540. The file shows it is a multiple kb pdf file. To read it I have to e-mail it to myself and let online mail reader open it. Can scan jpg and tiff with no problem.

Is there a compatibility issue with Adobe Reader XI 11.0.10 and the pdf scan program fro an Epson WF-3540 All In One? Is it an Epson Problem? Is it because the "source" shown in Properties from an Epson is a PDF 5.xx file? I can't understand why I can e-mail the item and get it to appear in the online Adobe reader, but if I try to save it to my computer drives it comes out with blank (gray) pages again. Is it a Win7 problem? Help I have a lot of scanning to do and only know everything was fine until about ten days to two weeks ago. Don't know if an update for Epson, Win7, or Adobe might be problem.

Thank you very much.! Two weeks of very frustrating uninstalls, reinstalls, cursing, moaning and thinking about buying a new scanner all solved with the check in the box. I have no idea how it got unchecked, as I never mess around with things that work. Incidentally, I got a "Fraud Detection Alert" on ~grafitti's message. When I went to the Adobe page and read the answer, I could not find the "Correct" button anywhere. Please see that ~grafitti gets some more points.

Lightroom Import only shows gray boxes after Importing

Hello All,
I'm an long time LR user whom have come across a problem. I run a HP DV6 Laptop with Core I7 and Windows 7. While editing my photos my computer appeared to over heat (which is a recurring issue that I'm working to resolve) during mid-post production. Upon restarting my computer, and when I accessed the same photos, I got a very lengthy loading icon when I clicked on a photo under the "Develop" tab. This problem recurred and in attempt to resolve the problem I decided to delete the library and re-import the files. Upon re-import, I cannot view all the photos in the library grid view. Would some please help me with this? Its very frustrating because I'm not sure if my files are now corrupt from the sudden crash or is it just a data issue with LR? Please let me know!

That looks like a corrupt monitor profile, which you could test by temporarily assigning an sRGB profile to the monitor. Have a look at this post:

Can not get any color swatches into Gradient Swatch panel.

I've tried dragging, clicking dragging and only get the circle/line-thru-it. And there is no New Gradient Swatch option anywhere that I can see.
Listen: I've now spent over 4 hours online -- today alone! -- reading instructions that simply do not work. After 4 years of InDesign work and design changes made because I can't get two colors to simply gradient, its time for this function to work for me.

You have at least two possibilites to add gradients to your swatches:
1. Select an Object with a gradient applied. (Take care to have the gradient part selcted in the stroke/fill part in the tool panel.) Got to the Swatch Panel and in the menu of the panel select "New Gradient Swatch…"
or
2. In the swatch panel menu got to "New gradient Swatch…", edit the color stoppers, add some ore remove some and click on the add or ok button.

Photo transfer and update from 5-year-old Macbook to new iMac using Time Machine resulted in half of 2014's photos being un-viewable (only a gray triangle with exclamation point shows). How do I fix it?

I turned on my new iMac for the first time today and set it up using a backup on Time Machine from my old Macbook, which is running OS X 10.9.5 and has iPhoto version 8.1.2. When I went to open iPhoto on the new computer, it said I had to update the photos to work with the new version. Now, my photos from part of July 26, 2014 and onwards do not show up in the new iPhoto. The albums and spaces for the photos are there, but only a gray triangle with exclamation point shows in their place. Every other photo from 2003 to half of July 26, 2014 appears to have updated without issue. None of the fixes/rebuilds I tried worked. When I open up TimeMachine, it has no backups that I can use for the new computer (perhaps, because I wanted to still have access to use my old backups for my old laptop so told it not to use them for the new computer). My most recent half a year's photos are the ones I need the most. How do I make them appear on my new iMac?

Do you still have the old Mac? Then check, if the iPhoto Library has the newer events from July 26 onwards.
If yes, copy the iPhoto library from the old Mac to the new mac by connecting both computers. And then try to upgrade the copied library.
If you no longer have access to the old mac, you could try to inherit the backup of the old Mac and try to restore the iPhoto Library from it.

Back up arrow key shows only in gray and won't let me go backwards

IF I am reading a screen and I want to go back a screen the program will no longer give me a black arrow to go back. It will only show in gray and not work. Did I change a setting that is causing this? Does it have anything to do with my history? I can still pull up my history.

Share Media Browser - only shows Tiny, or Mobile size, the rest are grayed

I'm helping a teacher with a movie in iMovie 09. It has all the latest patches. When I tried to use Share>Media Browser - only shows Tiny, or Mobile size, the rest of the larger sizes are grayed out.
Of course, I tried Mobile and it was pixelated when displayed at a larger size.
I'm not sure why this is. Can anyone help?

When you say what size is the source video, what do you mean, and how would I check that size?
I've just encoded the video in iMovie, into iTunes as size "mobile". The resulting file size is 27.8 MB. In iTunes, the info shows the codec as being H.264.

It sounds like you are unable see your lock screen to unlock your iPad and get you to your home screen. I dont know if this is the reset you have done, but its the first thing I would do:
To reset, press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons for at least 10 seconds, until you see the Apple logo.

Need calendar help. Since iOS 7 update can no longer use different calendar colors to hilite typed in event. They only show up as little dots next to event. This is worthless

I know your issue was long ago...but I found that the dots show up with specific time frames and the solid colors are for "all day" events.

Click+Hold a Color Swatch : Color-Shades float

I will use this image below just for an example.
I remember being able to click on a color and hold it for about two seconds and then a series of color-shades from the clicked-color will float on the side.
But now I can't seem to do it anymore. I've tried different Color Swatches, but it still doesn't work. Please help.

Not exactly confusing the two programs, I'm aware that it's Illustrator Swatch, but I was confusing two different vendors altogether. What I was talking about was Corel Photopaint. Corel has that feature, and I suppose Ps doesn't have that. I realized this when I open CPp again.

IMac G4 will not boot. It shows only a gray screen, but without the spinning wheel.

I tried to use my Imac G4 1.25Ghz today, after it had been stored for about a year.
It will only show the gray screen with the apple logo, but with no "spinning wheel"
I have tried "Command-Shift-P-R" immediately after pressing the power button, but nothing changes.
Searching on line leads me to believe it could be the internal battery. Is this likely?
If so, are all "half AA" Lithium batteries suitable? I have found the info for changing it on line, but would like some confirmation as to how to replace it.
If not, what else can I try? Please explain in laymans language if possible as I'm not a techy! (but have a friend who can help me if needed)
I can't remember what version of OSX it is running, other than it is Panther.
The install/restore discs say 10.3.2 (but I thought it was more recent).

Although a dead internal backup battery could be the cause, you might first try reinstalling OS X:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.
