Color wheel, frequent interruptions

Hi
I have a macbook pro from Mid 2010 running yosemite 10.10.2 and 8GB of Memory
Since I updated to 10.10.2 (3days ago) I face frequent problems with the spinning color wheel (though I don't know if the update is the reason)
currently the spinning wheel appears approx 4 times per hour and the mac stops working for approx 2 minutes each time. The last times: 4 times in Mail and once in excel.  I start to hate my macbook though I love it. (twice the spinning wheel while I wrote this message)
When the spinning wheel shows the hardest makes a hissing noise - so it does something.
A restart of the macbook did not change the situation.
Harddisk is checked and OK and permissions are too.
I cannot find a corresponding error message in the console in the minute of interruption
The console displays a lot of error messages
approx 100 per second of this type

You are running a very old version of EtreCheck. Download the latest version of EtreCheck from http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck. It has additional checks to look for failing hard drives.

I have an iMac. , mid 2007.  Frequently, when I take an action, the little color wheel starts spinning and goes on for quite awhile.  Save a file, close a file, open a file, open a window, it's all random.  Somtimes it stalls, sometimes it doesn't.  Sometimes long, sometims short.  Why is this happening?

Consider adding more memory. Be sure you have adequate free space on the hard drive - 15 GBs or 10% of the drive's capacity, whichever is greater. Do not run too many applications concurrently. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on resolving the SBBOD.
    Do some maintenance:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility.  For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior;  DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible. Drive Genius provides additional tools not found in Disk Warrior.  Versions 1.5.1 and later are Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.  Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger.  These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or Lion and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems. For more about malware see Macintosh Virus Guide.
I would also recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX 2.4.3, or Cocktail 5.1.1 that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack.  If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line.  Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. There is no confirmation that this version also works with Lion.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    Carbon Copy Cloner
    Data Backup
    Deja Vu
    SuperDuper!
    SyncTwoFolders
    Synk Pro
    Synk Standard
    Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.
Additional suggestions will be found in Mac Maintenance Quick Assist.
Referenced software can be found at CNet Downloads or MacUpdate.
Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity as free space.

  • Spinning Color Wheel appears frequently on my Mac Pro

I am using an early 2009 Mac Pro with a 2.66 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon processor, 6 GB 1066 MHZ DDR3 ECC memory, and a 1TB hard drive.  I am running OS X Lion 10.7.5.  Recently when I am on the internet (Safari 6.1.6) I more frequently have screens freeze and the spinning color wheel display.  I have owned the computer since late 2009 and have really not done anything (maintenance, etc) to it, as I don't know what I should do, if anything. After reading on this forum about the necessity for hard drive backup I have just ordered an AirPort Time Capsule and should have it later this week.  I downloaded and ran EtreCheck and copied it to my clipboard.  I don't know whether I should increase memory to avoid this or if there is some other problem.  Can you give me some direction?
    Thanks.

Clone the system to the SSD (250GB $120 EVO 850 Samsung) using CCC -
    http://www.bombich.com
Might be a good time though to do a clean install and then use Setup Assistant
    No maintenance?
Always have a couple bootable system drives, one for maintenance, one from last month or just prior to when you last made changes to the system.
Take a look in Activity Monitor for pageouts, disk usage, and what is running
    And start TimeMachine backup routine,
Copy your data to a new 2TB drive like WD Black ~$120 also
Leave the old drive as is for now, later you can erase and try using for a backup

  • Huge slowdown/clunkines/colored wheel

I have no idea what has happened, but lately, my Mac's internal hard disk (1TB) can be clearly heard thrashing about doing god knows what, several times a day. It sounds like it is saving some colossal file or groups of files, but I have no such files or work with huge files at all.
I rarely use anything beyond Firefox, Open Office and Apple Mail on a regular basis. Sometimes iTunes.
I only have these apps open on a day to day basis and they are typically left open all the time, with FF having multiple tabs (around 20).
I also set the computer to sleep while these apps stay up and I sometimes log out of my account too, but not very often.
I do share the computer with one other person, whose usage is very similar to mine.
When this problem occurs, I can barely get a mouse click in before the computer starts behaving in a clunky/jerky manner, with lots of interruptions by the colored wheel. The usage experience is reminiscent of my experience some years ago when I was forced to use a windows PC - quite awful.
I have run Onyx to see if it can straighten/clean up anything. I have not run anything else but Onyx was able to verify the disk.
Can anyone advise what the **** is going on?
I sometimes have to wait 10-20 minutes for all of this thrashing about to cease, only for it to restart later for reasons that mystify me.

  • I get the spinning color wheel

My Mac seems lazy with most programs - It hates AOL, my B&W G3 seemed a lot faster, what causes the color wheel to appear? Thanks
Imac   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   Intel

First, back up your hard disk, not necessarily that there is any reason to suspect it is failing, but the behaviour you describe can presage an impending disk failure and you should have backups anyway.
Apple Support Communities contributor etresoft wrote a very useful app to quickly gather certain system information that may help point to a cause of this problem. Go to his website, download and run EtreCheck:
    http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck
Etrecheck will be in your Downloads folder. Open it from there. You may see the following dialog box:
Click Open - etresoft contributes to this forum frequently and can be considered a trustworthy developer.
It will take a moment to run as it collects its data.
Copy and paste its output in a reply.
Do not be concerned about anything that says "Problem" or "failed".
EtreCheck was designed to remove any personal information (such as your computer's name and serial numbers) but if you see anything that looks like an email address or any other personal information that should not be divulged to others, please delete or obscure that information when you post the reply.
When you are finished with EtreCheck, quit the program. It occupies very little space, and you can keep it or drag it to the Trash as you wish.

  • Mail Save to Text color wheel or freeze

I have a user who likes to save his emails into folders, but both on 10.5 and 10.6 he often gets serious freezes when he does this. Sometimes it will work great for a while and then he'll save and the color wheel will take over and sometimes he has to force quit.
His primary mail account is a mobile me account using imap and he also has an aol account via imap that gets used less frequently.
I've rebuilt his mail index and the individual inboxes but can't figure out what could be the issue. His imap settings are set to download the entire message and attachment so it shouldn't have to be going to the server for more info (which would be an explanation if it were).

You can try deleting the related plist:
    com.apple.mail.plist
    ...in the userNameHome/Library/Preferences folder.
Might want to take note of existing account configurations in case you have to refresh those settings.

  • I have a 27" imac. If I log on to yahoo mail, the color wheel comes up and i cant check email or send. It only happens as soon as i log into my yahoo mail! Please help someone.

I am new to Using Apple. I've had my Imac for about 5 months, Recently when I log on to my Yahoo mail, if I click on any of my email, or if I try to compose an email, the color wheel turns on and it just freezes up, I am not able to view my email. This only happens with my Yahoo mail.  Someone please help? Any Suggestions?

    Hi Lizzy..
If you are using web based email (accessing from Safari), from the Safari menu bar click Safari / Preferences then select the Security tab.
    Click: Show Cookies
    Delete all Yahoo cookies.
Now from the menu bar again click Safari / Empty Cache.
Restart your Mac, launch Safari. Try Yahoo.
If the problem persists, there's a better way to access your Yahoo mail without a browser.
Launch the Mail application. Either from your Dock or Applications folder.
From the Mail menu bar click Mail / Preferences then select the Accounts tab then the Account Information tab.
Click + under the Accounts window on the left.
Type in your name, Yahoo email address and password.
    Click: Create
No more having to use Safari or any browser to access your Yahoo mail. Just click the Mail icon in the Dock.

Trying to download for the first time my pictures from my Canon 10D using Adobe LightRoom 1.3 under Leopard 10.5.1 everytime after +/- 30 pictures the program and the finder hangs option command escape also does not do anything anymore only the color wheel spinning. Only solution a hard reboot.
Using Leopard 10.5.1 Lightroom 1.3 on my macbook pro (15" led display version) all the picutures from the camera get downloaded without any problems.
Under all other conditions the iMac so far has been without problems. Is this aproblem in the video driver?
    Thanks,

  • Performance is very slow, i continue to get the spinning color wheel whenever i try anything (email, browser, word, etc)  any ideas

    Performance is very slow.
I continue to get the spinning color wheel on whatever I try.
It doesnt matter if its an email, browser or document of any kind it takes several seconds for anything to happen.

Hello, see how many of these you can answer...
See if the Disk is issuing any S.M.A.R.T errors in Disk Utility...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH7029
Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much RAM & free space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
In the Memory tab, are there a lot of Pageouts?

  • My browser keeps pausing and giving me the color wheel every few seconds

Whenever I'm using Firefox my browser pauses every few seconds and if I am typing something nothing comes out, or the color wheel comes out (I'm on a Mac), if I'm watching a video it pauses every few seconds... it's sort of maddening. I do have about 20 tabs open at a time, I don't know if that is what causes it. It doesn't seem to happen when I am in Safari.

"the spinning wait cursor is displayed automatically by the window server when an application cannot handle all of the events it receives. If an application does not respond for about 2 to 4 seconds, the spinning wait cursor appears."

  • I have a Mac Air. It said my start up disk was almost full and to delete files. I did but am not sure of what all I should delete. Then the color wheel wouldn't stop spinning so I just closed it. Now it won't open up at all. What can I do?

I deleted files from my MacBook Air after it said my start up disk was almost full. It did several xs, then the color wheel wouldn't stop spinning, so I closed it. Then after a sufficient amount of time, I tried to start it up again, only now the Apple start up wheel just spins non stop and nothing else happens. How or what can I do to get my MacBook Air to work again, without having to take it in? Thanks so much!

I also can't get music to transfer or delete music off of the iphone through itunes. i feel as if the phone and itunes arent communicating. bascially anything i try to do through itunes doesnt work.
im running itunes 11.1.5 (5) and its 64 bit on a mac 10.8.3, the iphone is an iphone 5 running ios 7.0.4.
im trying to update due to the security hole in that version but i want to back up before i do it.

Ever since installing iCloud and Lion my computer is slow or freezes.  The color wheel comes on and My work stops.  I have only a small window of time where my computers will function normally during the day. I know many others that have the same problem. I'll get 20-30 minutes of work done and then a sync or something comes on, the color wheel of death shows up, and my productivity is shot.  I have to shut the computer down the hard way!  when it comes back up, it is still either frozen or slow.  I've checked in at the genius bar and all they say is that there have been some problems that Apple is trying to fix.  It effects Mail, Contacts, Safari, Calendar....yeah, pretty much everything.  My iPhone and iPad are not effected as much so I end up doing what I can with them.  I've seen the blogs out there and understand that many have the same problem.  I have been waiting to read about a fix but I have found nothing!  Any ideas?

Not enough free space on the startup disk can slow the system down.
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure there's a minimum of 15% free disk space.
For startup issues...  open System Preferences > Users & Groups - Login Items. Delete any apps listed there then restart your mac.
And disable the Lion "resume" feature.
    Open System Preferences > General
Deselect:   Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps
And Spotlight may be indexing... you can turn that off > Turning Off Spotlight | Mac Tricks And Tips

  • Color wheel pops up for minutes on end when trying to perform simple tasks?

Ever since last night, my Macbook Pro (purchased in September of 2009), has been incredibly slow. I noticed it first while trying to browse the web. Out of nowhere, while doing things, like browsing Facebook, that I could normally do easily and without incident, the color wheel/beach ball/rainbow wheel/etc. would appear for what felt like an eternity, and for seemingly no reason whatsoever. Firefox was the only application I had running, and there was nothing excessive being done. After several more instances in the next few minutes, I tried my luck with Safari. Same result. Then, I realized it wasn't  just confined to web browsing. Even trying to open a Finder window would cause the color wheel to come up. Every simple action that used to take mere milliseconds to complete now can take up to 5 minutes to unfreeze. After I finally managed to get my laptop to recognize the external hard drive I plugged in so that I could try and use Time Machine to back up the more than 200 gigabytes that occupy my dying hard drive, the back up failed after an hour. This may or may not be related, as I noticed that the icon for the external hard drive no longer showed on my desktop. I have scanned my computer using a virus scanner obtained from the App Store a year or two ago. Nothing turned up. Finally, I have tried both restarting and shutting down my computer, yet all that that has shown me is that start-up is now a laborous process as well. For the first time, it showed me a loading bar under the gray Apple logo that remained empty for a few minutes, until it finally disappeared entirely and the operating system booted up. My attempt at entering Safe Mode on startup also failed, leaving me with nothing but a white screen that forced me to manually shut down my computer and give up in desperation. I'm planning on taking my Macbook to the Apple Store to see what can be done before irreparable damage is inflicted to my hard drive, because I value many of the files that have been added since my last back up several months ago. If any of you have had similar problems or have any idea what is going on, please let me know. Your help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Danny

It sounds like either data corruption, malware, bad sectors on the drive (moved it while it's opearating? a no-no) or the drive is possibly failing.
I'll give you a bunch of links and you decide what you want to do.
Apple is just going to charge you to replace the drive and not save your data.
If you want to recover your data and can't fix things yourself, take the machine to a local Mac repair shop as it's rather simple to replace the drive and Apple might not have one for a older SATA using machine aslo they specialize in data recovery efforts also. Apple doesn't.
You also can replace the drive yourself too.
