Colored bands on exported master files

I have been using Aperture mostly for selecting, cataloging and processing RAW files. I recently had the time to import my work from film sources. These files open and display fine in Photoshop. I imported these files into Aperture projects and added key words. These files are tif and psd files without layers and between 12 to 40Mo in size. They all display fine in Aperture. I have not made any adjustments on any of the files. They are all RGB.
When I export a version from them, there is no problem. However, when I export the master, I get colored bands on the masters, any where from one band to 10 or more. Not all the files have this problem. I deleted some of the problem files from Aperture, reimported and tried again. To no avail. I also tried exporting the same master several times and sometimes the banding is no longer present after these several tries, which seems very odd indeed.
After export from Aperture, I open the files in Photoshop where I see this banding. When opening in Photoshop, some files get an error message saying the file was damaged by a disk error. The same file opened in photoshop without having been first imported into Aperture does not get this error.
I looked at some problem files directly in the Aperture library by opening the package contents and those files open in Photoshop without any banding.
Here is a link to a sample of what I am getting:
http://homepage.mac.com/shiyinjia/Aperture/colorbands.jpg
I cannot say for sure whether this problem existed before the 10.4.6 came out. But some of the files exhibiting this problem were indeed imported prior to this update. I am running Aperture 1.01.
I have searched on this forum for posts of similar problems and didn't find any, but if there were, please be so kind as to direct me to them! Thanks for any insights you might have into this problem!

Ok here is what I've found out. I imported the original without the banding into Aperture, on export to master I got the banding. Then I thought ok, I'll copy and paste the image in photoshop into a new document, flatten it and save it as a PSD again. I imported that. Export as master on this file also gives banding but slightly different. Then I decided to apply a light gausian blur to the whole image in photoshop. Did this, saved it and imported and then exported in Aperture. It does not have the banding.
I'm not sure what this means other than you have a corrupt file. It could be you have a bad hard drive, or corrupt media that it was stored on (cds can deteriorate as well as external drives.) Anyway, somewhere something has corrupted this file (and maybe othere stored on the same media.)
So as stated before make sure you back up your entire main hard drive ASAP. Don't just back up your photos, back up everything thats important to you.
Back up any non-duplicated info on any external drive you have as well. Then boot your computer using the a Mac OS X install disk and check for hard drive errors. Check all your externals for errors too. If nothings shows up, Disk Warrior might not be a bad investment, just for the piece of mind. Also back up any cd/dvds you might have photos stored on by copying the contents to your hard drive and then burning a new cd because if you have DVDs or CDs that are faultering, they're only going to get worse as time goes on.
This does not necesarily mean you have a bad drive or disks, but chances are if this is happening with multiple files there probably is a problem with your storage and it's better be safe than sorry. If this has happened to one or two files, it could just be a case of a bad file, that had an error while be written to, or just got corrupted.
Good luck.

  • I am trying to export a video I have made in FCP 10.0.8 to Youtube or to a master file and I keep on getting an error -50, or "error exporting master file at frame 20074" Any ideas?

Having used FCExpress for a while I decided to give FC Pro X a trial, I created my first video with it, exported to youtube and it worked fine.  I am now trying to export my second video to youtube and I get an error -50 which means absolutely nothing.  Not being defeated that easy I tried exporting to a mster file using the H.264 codec and I get an error "exporting master file at frame 20074" - again another useless error.  It takes at least 10 minutes to get to this error after the rendering has started, it gets about 12% in.  Any ideas where to start - I am seriously at the point of giving up with Final Cut Pro X simply on the basis of it being more trouble than its worth - I am just glad I did not pay for it yet...
Any help would be much appreciated.

    Hi Russ,
Thanks for your response. I am not an experienced user of FC or other video editing software but if its that hit and miss I think I will go to the trouble of finding some better software - I have a busy enough life as is, I don;t want to get into second guessing what a software problem might be!
I have just successfully exported my video to a master file using one of the Apple codec options so it looks like it could be to do with the H.264 codec.  I am wondering if Apples Compressor software would solve this problem - the only way to try this it to buy it, there is not trial for the compressor app.  Any ideas?
    Thanks

  • Looking for some help with an error message when exporting master file. I'm stuck and would even pay to get this sorted out!

Hey guys, I'm really in a bind here and need some urgent help tonite. I would even be willing to pay for some actual help and not some vague information that i may not be able to understand if we could do something via skype or some other way that would be much quicker than a message board. Of course I have to have the project done by tomorow . so I'm new to fcpx, but have succesfully exported 2 other projects. I've also ran into this predicament before (error message not allowing me complete export) and have been able to solve that by converting the files i imported off my camera (canon g20) to a different file type (prores).
so where I'm at now: i have a 13 min short, all shot on my canon g20, imported and converted to prores422 with the brorsoft video converter with all the shots in a single event in fcpx. i'm using fcpx version 10.0.08. I have one main video track in my timeline that is completely full of very fast edits. (all quick 2-5 second clips, sped up shots in 2x, 4x, or 8x, tons of transitions, titles, and a little fx. theres 2 audio tracks, one is narration/speech and the other is an ongoing music track that constantly ducks everytime the subject speaks (tons of ducks/edits). Have you seen mtv cribs? Well i filmed an EXACT replica. So If you've seen one of those episodes, its literally the same exact same thing. I have all of my work completed, everything has been fully rendered, and i have it exactly as I want it.
I'm including all this information in case it may help. my successful projects ive exported in the past were rather simple, and this one is very complex and full of edits. here is what it looks like in the timeline:
Ive tried exporting the master file using almost all the different ways with no luck. My primary objective is to get it on youtube by any means by tommorow for a showing to a potential buyer (long story) and so I've been told using the h.264 is the best format for that. This, along with the other methods give me the same error message:
It think it gives this error message when i reach 24% everytime during export.
So first of all, what is that error message? Do i need to be concerned about the specifics of it, or is there something major that I'm missing? Like i said, i dont care how, but I need to get this video up on youtube tonite for an important viewing tomorrow. Conceptually, I think if i can figure this one out I shouldnt have any more trouble in the future doing something so basic, yet critical, such as exporting my 40+ hours of work for someone to see.
anyway, I apologize in advance for my lack of knowledge with this software, and for my extremely long winded question which will probably have the opposite effect for me as most wont want to take the time to read all this, BUT i figured if i was as thorough as possible it might help actually getting a concrete answer, instead of a "read the manual, exporting is on page 37." or "use the share button on the right of the timeline then just click export master file and it will work everytime."
Cheers everybody, and thank you. Like i said if someone is up, and willing to talk via skype, phone, messanger or any other method that works for you I would be totally down and will compensate you generously for your time. thanks again.
    Taphabit

boom! that advice was correct and worked. i was able to export the full project as a quicktime movie and it can be uploaded to youtube.
NOTE, theres is definately quite a few noticeable audio glitches/lags/pops that werent there before doing this. I believe, and will test to make sure, that having a project such as this one needs to render before exporting. I'm not sure if the advice requires the project to be unrendered before exporting for a specific reason, because if it will export fine after rendering the project that's the way to go. like i said the edited version i have in my timeline plays back perfectly but this exported version has quite a few noticeable audio glitches (a few video glitches too). I'm going to retry doing the first few steps of your advice, but then at the end render, then export and compare the results...
OK, so this leads to a big question, Is this something that is standard for everyone when trying to export? If its not, what causes this error?
is there any way of preemptively avoiding it in future projects?
thanks again, and hopefully this information will help others as exporting seem to be one of the biggest problems in fcpx. any word on a new patch or firmware update?

  • Error message when attempting to export master file?

I am running Mavericks and have FCP 10.1
When I try to export a master file, I keep receiving the error message "The share operation master file has failed.  An error occurred when creating frame ..... (error -1)."
I've turned off background rendering, I've tried copy and pasting entire timeline into a new project, and I've tried deleting project and event rendering files.
At this point, I don't know what else to do.
    Help?

    Russ H wrote:
Returning to when you turned off BG Renderiing and deleted project and event renders, did you delete all renders? And before you tried exporting, did you leave BG Rendering off and did you try exporting without manually rendering?
    Russ
I did delete all renders. I did not manually render anything. BG Rendering off, I clicked export master file and that was all.

  • ARCHIVE HD: What format to export master file of edit

My one-man band operation just entered the HD world as of a few weeks ago. I use FCP7 and shoot 720p/59.94 AVC-I 100 30pn with a Panasonic AG-HPX300. I ingested the P2 into FCP in ProRes HQ and have completed my first edit. I am going to send it to COMPRESSOR for a variety of distribution outlets (DVD, websites, soon-to-be-award-winning PBS documentary, there is even Oscar buzz)
However, this post is about a logistically and technically smart archive system. Here is my three step post-tape archive concept for my dedicated external hard drive that is stored in a safe place.
    1. Copy all the original P2 files.
    2. Use Media Manager of the edit in ProRes HQ and copy all of that to the arhive.
    3. Export a master file of the edit for the archive.
I recently saw a post where Shane made a point, in his very gentle and diplomatic way, about ProRes HQ being for big broadcast projection situations and that regular ProRes would suffice. But he was generously sharing his expertise with someone who was using HDV. 'Overkill' I believe was one description of ProRes HQ.
So the question is, if you are shooting 720p/59.94 AVC-I 100 30pn, editing in ProRes HQ, and making a master file of an edit to archive on a backup external hard drive, what export settings would you use... and how many mistakes have I already made thus far?
Je voudrais vous remercier en avance.

Apple's white paper on the ProRes family tells us HQ was developed as a means to deal with 2k/4k material. It is unlikely you'll see much difference between std ProRes and the HQ variant given your starting material.
The one work flow where HQ may offer you a benefit is if you are a heavy user of Color where the extra information contained in the original material comes into play. Do a test and see what happens. If the std version of ProRes does what you want, you'll save a bit of file space. Even though drives are relatively inexpensive these days, keeping down the file sizes does help.

  • Exporting Master File to iDVD - interlacing problem?

    Hi,
I am finally at the stage of exporting our school play recording to iDVD (is there a better alternative?). Anyway - I have read many posts on the matter here - and the consensus seems to be that I should export a Master File (this is a massive 52Gb). I have done this, using the default settings. The picture is clear - but fast movement causes a funny distortion - stripes almost. A friend who is versed in Handbreak told me that it was a interlacing issue. What should I do to combat this? Hope someone can help

    Hi,
Thanks for this. I have create an empty project which is 1080p. How do i safley move my finished 1080i project to the 1080p project. Apologies if this is a very basic question.

  • Color Shifts in Exported AI Files

When we export an image from Flash CS4 as an ai file & open in Illus CS3, the colors are off (loss of saturation, hue shift).
Does not happen when saved in other formats.  Any suggestions?

I have an involved commercial image with lots of layers to export.  That would take me days.
The colors are specific to a color palette (based on an established logo).  When the image is reassembled, all the separate images (parts of the illustration) and their colors need to match.
Also, don't have this problem going from Illus to Flash (of course, then I have numerous export/import options on both ends).
I worked in Illus w/ the exported palette (from Flash), but again, too time consuming.
Interestingly, my Flash CS4 doesn't seem to differentiate - it's just an ai file (OS X 10.6.3).

  • Why does Final Cut Pro change my title's baseline after the first two titles when exporting a master file?

    Hey Guys,
I want to use a Zoom title (Titles -> Build In/Out -> Zoom).  I only want the title, not a subtitle.  So I insert Zoom's everywhere, type in my stuff for Line 1, delete the contents of Line 2, format it (font, tracking, etc.).  Everything looks great in the Viewer.  I let it render, then export a Master – same as source.  I open the MOV, the first two titles are great.  Then every title thereafter looks like someone changed the position by 100 pixels south of its original location.
Here's what I've done to troubleshoot it:
Removed all Zoom's, inserted new ones, removed the contents of Line 2 and left Line 1 alone (i.e. it still reads "Title").  When I export, everything's fine.  The moment I change formatting or put in new copy in Line 1, same thing happens – every title changes position by 100 pixels down.
Downloaded Digital Rebellion's Preference Manager, trashed pref's/
I'm using a TTF with a bold type body only.  Figured I'd leave it at Gill Sans Bold.  Same thing happens as soon as I type something custom into Line 1.
I had a text style saved and removed it.  (Which wasn't easy.  Solution here.)
Has this ever happened to you?
    Thanks!

    Hey Jim,
Thanks for the follow-up.  Here are some more details:
    OS - 10.8.2
    FCP X - 10.0.7
I can't update either of these because of my Avid installation.
Something else I didn't mention – this happens in a 4K project.  Notice how a default Zoom title looks:
Lines 1 and 2 are almost stacked on top of each other.
    Here's my title style:
Here's what the title looks after I apply the title style, modify Line 1, and remove the contents of Line 2:
And here's how it looks in the exported master file MOV:
    Notice how it's pushed down?
Then I decided to make a 720p project.  No more title problems.
So if you have some 4K footage, Jim, give it a go.  Or if there's another 4K-er out there, try this and let me know.
    Thanks!

  • Letterboxed Master File Export?

    Hi there,
I have a 2240x960 project and I need to create a ProRes master that is 1920x1080 (letterboxed).  But when I export Master File it doesn't give me the option to change resolution.  The other tabs can get me to 1920x823 (non-letterboxed) but only in h.264
What is the best way I can achieve a 1920x1080 letterboxed ProRes file?
    Thanks!

I think I just answered by own question.
I exported 2240x960 ProRes Master -> Created new 1920x1080 project -> Placed the 2240x960 master into that timeline and then exported Master File from that project.

  • Color change after exporting from Lightroom

I noticed a drastic color change after exporting a file from Lightroom to a JPEG file today. I have been using Lightroom for a while, and it never happened before. I am assuming that I changed the setting somehow and I cannot find how to fix it.
    Here is the original.
After exporting to a JPEG. The color is so drastically different. I tried both sRGB and AdobeRGB and they turn out to have the same problem.
It is not as clear as JPEG files, but edited files with Photoshop CS5 also looks slightly different viewed on Lightroom.
I would appreciate it if anyone could help me.  Thank you so much for your help!

Thanks everyone for looking into my problem!
    >Can you upload a sample of each
    >* Raw File
    >* XMP Sidecar
    >* Exported JPEG
I somehow can't find XMP sidecar files in my folders.... So instead, I exported the JPEG file to the 2nd JPEG file, hoping you can compare those two JPEG files.
The colors get lighter and lighter every time I export the files. I uploaded those files (RAW, 1st JPEG, 2nd JPEG) on line. I also changed the file samples from the original post because I can't add watermarks.
I checked my flles, but there is no preset applied to the JPEGs.
I am thinking of unistallng Lightroom and reinstalling it and see what happens.
    Thanks!

  • How to prevent color banding in AVCHD files on import?

    Hi!
I am trying to import some 1080 60i AVCHD files from my Panasonic G3 camera into iMovie '11. Once the files are imported they show very strong color banding/pixelation, that does not show up if I play the clips on the same computer/screen directly from the SD card in Quicktime player. Here is a screenshot from of the original frame, and here is exported movie.
I am using all default setting for export to Quicktime movie (1080 HD, "Best" quality).
For import I tried so far:
    1. Import into iMovie at full quality from the SD card;
    2. rewrap AVCHD into MOV (with ClipWrap) without resampling then import
    3. convert AVCHD to Apple Intermediate codec (with Clip Wrap), then import
    No difference!
Is it even possible to avoid such banding/pixelation with iMovie or another video editor that's available for free/cheap? If yes, how is it done?
Here is a 40 Mb mts file if you want to try to test your method: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/40852067/00011.MTS
    Will appreciate any advice!
    Thank you in advance,

Finally found a solution to this problem:
Remove saved state for Fireworks CS6 on Mac OS X Mountain Lion
    Quit Fireworks.
In the Finder, navigate to /Users/Your User Name/Library/Saved Application State/com.macromedia.fireworks.savedState
    3 files in folder:
    data.data
    window_1.data
    windows.plist
Prefix files with 'OLD' just to be safe.
    Start Fireworks

  • Horizontal colored bands appearing in imported raw files

I just now started to have mostly magenta horizontal lines or bands appear in imported a Sony Nex 7 ARW files. When opening the same file with Sony’s raw converter or DXO Pro, the bands are non existent. I have noticed that sometimes but not always, the bands will disappearing in LR after I examine a photo by clicking on it to enlarge a selected area and the loading finishes. Exported photos will have the bands. Also, If I first open the files with IDC or DXO, the file will then import into Lightroom without the bands. I have run diagnostics on the SD card and the hard drive with no errors showing up. Running LR5.4 on a Macbook Pro. I’m totally confused. Any enlightening comments would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
These artifacts are exactly like those in the post : Why do I get Colored bands on some images in LR4 and LR5, but not in Aperture?

I have the EXACT same problems when importing .RAF files from my Fujifilm X-T1 via a USB card reader (USB 2.0) on my MacBook Pro 13" Retina (late 2013) with OS X 10.9.3 in Lightroom 5.4. (I did not purchase the X-T1 until after I updated to 5.4, so I can't speak of whether this happens in other versions of LR)
I second sevenc's suggestions that this is NOT a hardware issue - I have tried 5 different SD cards, all formatted either on my computer or in the camera, reformatted several times (low-level format) and it STILL happens! Never with the JPGs, only with the RAW files.
However, doing a straight file copy from the SD card (in the card reader) to the hard drive before doing the import works fine - no artifacts!
Ditto if I use the internal SD reader (an internal USB3.0 connection) on the Macbook, no purple bands.
It is apparently unrelated to the OS, since this is happening both in Windows and OS X. I have posted a more detailed acccount here:
    Lightroom 5.4 - "glitches" on my RAF->DNG conversions from X-T1 - Fuji X Post Processing - Fuji X Forum
One of the members of that forum has seen the same happening with Panasonic RAW files, but only when an external USB drive was connected at the same time.
When the external drive was disconnected, the images imported normally.
BTW, my Canon files import just fine, using the same SD card, the same USB card reader and the same computer - no glitches....
The most likely thing happening (my opinion) is that the Lightroom import process somehow interferes with the USB connection. It doesn't really make sense, because I am sure Lightroom uses the standard OS I/O file routines, but it seems to be the most likely issue. Is there a chance LR uses its own code for reading files off of external drives.
Other software (Aperture, Preview, Image Capture, Raw Photo Processor 64 or PhotoNinja) can import fine, whether the card is in an external card reader or not - no artifacts.
I have seen it the same issue described with Panasonic files on LR 4, so it does not seem to be limited to LR 5.4
Re: Why do I get Colored bands on some images in LR4 and LR5, but not in Aperture?
Anyone care to shed light on the issue and what could be going on here ? It seems the more obscure raw formats are affected (Sony, Panasonic, Fujifilm) and that Canon/Nikon users do not experience it (at least I haven't found it described online).
This is a serious bug, because unless you do a re-import of the RAW/RAF file, the image data is permanently corrupted. It is not an issue of corruption of the embedded JPG preview , it is the RAW file itself. Once it has been imported by Lightroom, it displays the artifacts in other programs as well (Aperture, Preview etc)
Trying to convert the image to another format, e.g. TIFF, JPG, BMP the artifacts are still there.
I hope this is taken seriously by Adobe, as it is a critical issue for those of us who are affected. I can work around it by copying the files to my hard drive first, but it shouldn't have to be this way....

  • Good evening. When I try to rename a master file or export a master file, it only allows 9 spaces for my new name, even though Aperature 3 allows many more spaces than that for version names. This creates a lot of problems and headaches for me.

Good evening. When I try to rename a master file or export a master file, Aperature 3 only recognizes the first 9 spaces for raw .NEF files, even though it easily uses twice that many spaces for version names. I have a system in place that works really well for me, wherein by changing the file name I can recognize what's important to me just by glancing at the file name, no matter what system it is in, I do not have to open or mouse over anything to know what the file is. My files also arrange themselves in order no matter what file system they are in. Can someone please tell me if there is a setting, or something I am doing wrong, that prevents me from using a longer Master file name. I can't be the only person who would like to have his Master File names correspond to the name that appears in the Aperature library, and would like to use at least 16 spaces (numbers, letters, etc.)
    Thanks,
    Photo Al

    Hi Frank,
As you suggested, I am attaching several screen shots. In the first one you can see how I set up my preset. I used "Custom Name" and "Counter" with a dot between the two drag ins, followed by "D90". I also have a dot to seperate the 8 digits in the Custom Name and make it easier to read.
I then click "OK" which takes us to the second screen shot. Here you can see that in the Example File Name everything looks perfect, and you can see I have clicked on "Apply to Master Files".
In the third screen shot you can see that the version in my library did in fact change correctly. With the "mouse over" pop up screen you can see, however, that the Master File name was changed  to "1933.1017.NEF". It failed to carry the "12D90" and if I go to where my masters are stored that is exactly what the name was changed to.
In the fourth screen shot I attempt to export the master. You can see how my "Version Name" is set up.
And finally on the 5th screen shot you see in the File Name Example the name "1933.1017.NEF" once again, which when I export the master is exactly how the name will appear. Since I will export more than one file at a time , a (1) and  a (2)  etc., will appear at the end of the names because all the files are being given the same "1933.1017.NEF" name.
I hope this reply does a better job of clarifying my problem. I am anxious to see if this is something I simply misunderstood, or if I am simply doing something wrong.
    Thanks,

  • Why, when exporting as master file from FCX, I have problem with sync

I edited all audio of a short movie in protools, bounced a stereo file, imported it in final cut and shared the master file at prores 422, from there through compressor I have created 2  files (mpeg 2 and ac3) and burnt a  dvd but seems always to be out of sync , why?
fortunately  i still have dvd studio pro that allow me to "nudge" the  audio to fix the problem, but all this is quite time consuming.
    any advice?

I have fixed some issue about audio and video, created a new project with correct sample rate, imported the master video at same frame rate, and in pt bounced  a new track of audio, so  no orange bar, everything fine in FCX,AUDIO AND VIDEO PERFECTLY IN SYNC.  i exported a master file at best current setting and in compressor have created a dvd setup hi quality, 2 pass vbr encoding mode etc
and.. imported the m2v file and ac3 in DVD STUDIO PRO, and on time line i hear out of sync, now i don't know if the problem happen during the encoding in compressor or is dvd studio pro.

  • Exporting The Master File, AVI Uncompressed.

    Hello Everyone.
I want to know what Is the best Export Setting to Export my 1920 by 1080, 30 fps,  Edited Version movie, so I can have a File that Is not Lossless.
from there I can always Export to other settings such as You Tube, or even D.V.D.
My concern Is to have the best possible File, I have Plenty of Disk Space so It is ok for me To save them In My Hard Drive.
    I use the MPEG2- HD 1080i 29.97.
Also I have a choice of using  the: Match Source High bitrate.
My friend told me,  the best Export setting for the Master file Is:  AVI ( Uncompressed) with the Quality Slider to 100 percent, and check the Use Maximum Render Quality  box Checked. Then you have nothing to worry about, and later you can export that to what ever version you like.
Please let me know, which one Is correct.
Once Again Thank you very much.

...so I can have a File that Is not Lossless.
    I'm confused.
Surely you meant you want a lossless file for archive.
Here are a few recommended free codecs.  I prefer Ut for archives.
All of these are better choices than using .avi Uncompressed.
Ut Video Codec Suite (pc or mac / .avi .mov / lossless)
    http://www.videohelp.com/tools/Ut-Video-Codec-Suite
Lagarith Lossless Video Codec (pc only / .avi /  lossless)
