Colored iBooks...

Given this website yesterday : colorwarepc.com
Any feedback on this?
Thank you my fellow apple dumpling gang!

It will most likely void your Apple warranty, but you will get a 30 day warranty from Colorware if you decide to send one in, for ≈$400. If you buy one from them directly, you will get a 1 year warranty from Colorware as well as an option to buy an extra year. If you have more questions, you'd probably get your questions answered better if you called 1(888) 452-6567. You may also want to talk to Apple as well to see what they say.
Good Luck,
Jon

  • Late 2005 iBook G4 with kernal panic

    Hi all,
I cannot find any instructions for replacing or checking the Airport card in my late 2005 iBook G4. I'm trying to follow Dr. Smoke's instructions but can't find any DIY manual or pics of the Airport card in this notebook. I've found several that show an Airport extreme card where I've got memory. I've also found several memory replacement instructions. I don't have an original colored iBook so those instructions did me no good. I have no PC Card slots so those instructions did me no good. Any guidance would be appreciated.

    Hi
Since the introduction of the iBook (Mid 05) the Airport/Bluetooth card has not been a user installable item. It is located under the top shield to the left of the processor heat sink. This means removing the casing of the iBook, so if you want to get it checked out, I would strongly advise that you take it to your local AASP who will, I'm sure check it out for you.
If yours is a late '05 model, that kinda implies it's still in warranty, and if you attempt to take it apart yourself, you're going to void any warranty that you may have left.

  • Off Topic, But I Need An Answer (About Buying an iBook G3)

I was looking around on eBay for different stuff and I came across several iBook G3's (the colored ones). I know that technology has changed a lot, but I think it would be cool to have one just to fool around on and show off (it would turn heads).
I found a user-upgraded model with the following specs:
    Processor: PowerPC 366 MHz
    RAM: 320 mb
    Hard Drive: 20 gig
    12" screen
    Mac OS X Panther
    Include Microsoft Office X
I wouldn't pay more than $200 total (with shipping) for something like this.
Would that setup be able to surf the internet, perform basic word processing, play iTunes music, and use MSN Messenger relativly well? Or is it simply a terrible idea to buy something like this off eBay?

You most likely wont find a colored iBook with a 20GB drive, the shipping hard drives for the models had 4, 6 or 10GB drives.
Then again, I see you did, good luck at getting it for less than $200.

  • Making a used iBook my own...

I was raised a PC person, but I started a new job where they all use Apples. I purchased a used Blueberry colored iBook clamshell for my own personal work station, and I'm trying to upgrade it to better suit my needs. Here's what I know/need:
I bought it running OS 9.0.4 but I also purchased copies of OS 9.1 and OS 10.1.4. I was told that I had to get it up to 9.1 before upgrading to 10.1.4... is that true?
The hard drive was still loaded with the previous owners files, and many of them were password protected. How can I format the hard drive?
It currently has a 300MHz G3 processor, with 128MB of RAM. How high can I upgrade the RAM? On Crucial.com it said I could only go up to 288, but I've seen posts on here saying that I can go as high as 588. What the truth?
Also... what is FIRMWARE?? I've seen it a lot on these discussions also. "Make sure you update FIRMWARE!!" What does it do? How high should I update it? Did I ruin my chances by already installing OS 9.1??
I really do love my little blueberry. I only use it for word processing and data entry (MacOffice)... so it's perfect for my needs. I just need to upgrade it a tiny bit to be able to run on our server.
Thanks a ton to all who help!

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
I bought it running OS 9.0.4 but I also purchased copies of OS 9.1 and OS 10.1.4. I was told that I had to get it up to 9.1 before upgrading to 10.1.4... is that true? … Did I ruin my chances by already installing OS 9.1??"
Since you've already installed OS 9.1, it really doesn't matter whether it was necessary prior to installing OS X 10.1.4.
You only need to update the Firmware if installing OS X 10.2 or greater.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117
Maximum RAM depends on whether the logic board RAM is 32 or 64 MB. According to EveryMac.com, "Apple officially reports that the maximum memory capacity of this system is 288 MB with 32 MB of onboard memory and 320 MB with 64 MB of onboard memory. However, third-parties have been able to upgrade the RAM to 544 MB or 576 MB, respectively, with a single 512 MB memory module."
What specifications do you need to run on the server? What is the size of your hard drive? OS X demands a lot of hard drive space. I would recommend staying in OS 9 if the hard drive has not been updated to 20 GB or more.
Also, you may want to try posting in the iBook (colors) Forum.
You have posted in the iBook G3 (Dual USB) Forum (the forum for the first all-white iBooks).

You can check the specs of ALL iBook models (G3 + G4) at everymac.com

If your iBook has a processor less than 867MHz it won't be able to run
Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, though methods exist to allow it unofficially.
Old first model colors iBook G3 (not white dualUSB) have other limits.

  • Upgrading original iBook hard drive

    Hello.
I have just discovered the Mac with a new second-hand original blueberry clamshell iBook. It's come with a 3GB internal HD which I find is puny. I want to upgrade, but I admit I'm scared after looking at the instructions on www.ifixit.com. I know that I need a 9.5mm tall replacement, but I'm totally new to Macs (used to Windows) and want to know every detail about upgrading, i.e. how to put OS 9 back on, are there specific Mac hard drives? what will happen when I turn it on just after the HD upgrade etc.
I confess my ignorance, and thank everyone in advance for having read this message thus far.
Original iBook G3 Clamshell   Mac OS 9.2.x

The process is a little involved. I recently upgraded my 10g on my iBook 466 SE Graphite to a Toshiba 40g that I had access to. It took me (I have built PC's from scratch-for years) 1:45 hours, only because I had never opened a iBook previously, and wanted to be careful. I used the instructions on www.ifixit.com. Most (if not all) laptop hard drives now are 9.5mm, only those that are (I believe) prior to 2000 are taller that 9.5mm. But any new hard drive you buy is the newer specification...9.5mm.
As for the upgrading to OS X, if your iBook, it would be better to upgrade to panther 10.3.9 and not to tiger 10.4.x, but it will run tiger. You may need to install a third party program called xpostfacto, because I believe you do not have Firewire on that iBook and Tiger looks for that as a requirement.
Also before you upgrade to OS X anything, you should hook that iBook up to internet and do a update to make sure you have most current firmware.
The most current firmware for colored iBook's is :
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117.
Lots of threads on this. any help just search threads or post back here.
Enjoy your new life as a MAC user.

  • IBook Won't Recognize Charge in Battery

My iBook, a Revision B non-FireWire machine, is experiencing a very unusual problem in that it won't recognize the charge in a battery.
Like many iBooks, this one no longer will charge a battery. I purchased a new battery from OWC in the fall and found it wasn't charging--yet one of my two decade-old batteries was still initiating the amber light (something this battery did not). I sent the battery back and received another one, which gave me the same symptoms.
I performed the oft-discussed routines for resetting power management systems on iBooks, resetting the PMU, PRAM, and NVRAM. I tried each procedure several times and even "drained" the capacitor by leaving it unplugged/unbatteried for 30 minutes. The computer still wouldn't charge the battery--there was no attempt made according to the symbols in the control strip. (My iBook runs 9.1 although I do have a copy of Jaguar I could install on it--but at the moment I have the extra space filled with VPC and Win2K). I also tried Apple's battery reset extension.
Figuring I could get away without built-in charging, as this is currently a laptop I only use on an occasional basis, I bought a VST charger. The battery charged up fine. When I put it in the iBook, I got maybe 10-15 seconds of battery life.
The main problem here: *even with a known charged battery, the computer won't see any charge in that battery*. It's fine by me if the computer doesn't want to charge, as I have the VST charger, but I do want it to work off the battery.
Some history, in case any of this is relevant: I purchased this computer new in August 2000 with two batteries. The original yo-yo adapter shorted out five years later. It took about three weeks for a replacement to come, and that replacement was an OWC house brand charger (not an Apple). I depleted both batteries, which were still getting close to their original capacity, during the time between the adapter's failure and the arrival of the new adapter. Neither battery charged on the new adapter, although I blamed this on a combination of drainage and age. I later replaced the power adapter with another Apple, but the batteries had been drained for too long to charge back up. Neither will charge in the VST station, although the OWC battery does.
The computer runs OS 9.1, has 192MB RAM, and has not seen a fresh system install in about three years. It has an Airport card installed and has no history of trouble outside of the shorted yo-yo and the inability to charge/recognize batteries.
I've worked on tons of Macs and have seen far crazier problems, all of which have been solvable, but this one is impossible even for this veteran Apple user to figure out. Every known remedy has failed, and I'm wondering if perhaps it's an internal problem relating to the PRAM capacitor--which appears as though it would have failed in 2005 if it indeed failed.
Any help would be greatly appreciated--although this is by no means my main machine, I still use it for a few OS 9 programs I haven't bothered to upgrade and definitely want to use it without the AC adapter for the first time in nearly six years.

It's a good idea to start your own discussion when you have a different problem than the one discussed in a particular thread.
    https://discussions.apple.com/static/apple/tutorial/ask.html
Which exact iBook model is it?
You can choose from this list:
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/ibook/index-ibook.html
If it's one of the older, colored iBooks, you need to update the firmware on it before attempting to boot from an OS X disc or install OS X (as mentioned above).
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1284?viewlocale=en_US
Is the Jaguar CD the full retail version or a disc that came with another Mac? If it's a disc that came with another Mac, it probably won't work with the iBook.

  • Help!! Can't get past this folder icon in the middle of my screen

I received an external CD driver in the mail and wanted to make sure it would plug in to my laptop, so, with the computer off and unplugged, I plugged in the USB and then unplugged it. Then, I plugged my iBook in, and powered it on.
Right after I booted my computer up, the screen came on and a little folder appeared right in the middle of the screen. The folder is small, and is alternately flashing a question mark ? and the mac logo of the little square face. The mouse wont work, pressing enter doesn't do anything.
I just got this laptop from a friend, I used the computer at a cafe with no problems, went online, downloaded open office. That was 3 days ago, and since then hasn't been touched... Until today. Now it's doing this.
School starts Monday and this has to be fixed!! I know nothing about Macs, someone help?

    None of the white iBook G3 series would be running OS 8.6 or earlier;
the first one (dual USB, 500MHz 12" LCD, etc) shipped with OS 9.1
in May 2001 and it could also run OS X.
The older iBook G3 in colors other than white, (blueberry, tangerine,
indigo, lime, graphite) were in two series, the earlier one of those
shipped with OS 8.6; in July 1999. The second of the series, had Fire-
Wire ports and a faster CPU. It shipped with OS 9.0.4. With adequate
hardware upgrade to support OS X, the oldest colors iBook G3s can
run, respective of age, oldest model: OS X 10.3.9 or maybe 10.4.
For some better ideas on what may actually help the computer you
have, information on what it is would be of great consequence. If
you have a correct bootable installer system CD (or DVD if a later
iBook with combo or superdrive installed) then you may be able to
start the computer from the Mac OS install disc and run Disk Utility
or the equivalent, to try and repair the disk, then choose a startup
volume on the computer's hard disk drive, and restart the iBook.
Since you indicate you had tried to install a freeware Office-like app
into the computer, it would not be running a pre-OS X system.
There may be some minor damages or corruption to the data files
on the computer's hard disk drive, so a disk utility that could try
and fix them may be a solution; so hopefully you have a correct
version Mac OS system install disc and can see if inserting that
into the iBook's optical drive and try restarting while holding the
C key down, this may let you boot from the Installer; in the menu
header of the OS (X is presumed) when you see a Finder-like
    menu bar, there are choices and options in drop-down menus;
one of them is to run Disk Utility.
However, not knowing what the computer model really is or
the OS version running; or if you have any correct discs for it
to try & fix this problem, about the best you may be able to do
is use some keyboard commands and try to get the computer
to look for any available startup system.

    Without more information, there is no really simple answer;
as most tools you may need to get past the problem would
have to be present for you to continue. What kinds of OS
discs and software did you get with the computer? What
model is it? (What does it look like and what part number or

  • Light Blue Screen followed by nothing

    Hi there,
I'm wondering if anyone can help me solve a problem i'm having with MacOSX 10.3 and a iBook G4 which I recently purchased.
The iBook G4 boots the Apple Hardware Test cd fine and I'm able to test the hardware which all passes (Logic Board, Memory, Mass storage etc), however on some occassions when I try to boot the install disc's which came with the unit it will begin to boot it and then stops with a light blue screen (which is seen as the background for the MacOSX install). Sometimes I do have success and it will load the setup as it should but other times its just as I describe it. There is no cursor or spinning colored disc on the screen either when it happens. It just a blank light blue screen which doesn't do anything.
Is this a logic board fault or a HDD fault?

    Hi cornelius and ali brown,
Thankyou for your replies. I'll have a look at those articles and see how it goes.
In response to your question Ali, that was my post. I just felt this type of question was probably more relavent in here.
As you may know I was able to get the installation going after running in verbose mode however the install only required the first disc of 3 - 4 (can't quite remember). I did also select "Archive and Install" which saves the current installation for future access. (someone suggested it on this forum or another one)
After the first CD was done, it asked to restart the machine. I clicked restart and it booted fine (no longer get the kernal dump on bootup) however it doesn't continue after that. I simply see the Apple logo plus the spinning gear which then goes to a light blue screen and stays there. It is similar to when I tried booting from the install disc.
It does the same thing in verbose mode and I can't see anything from the startup process which might be causing the problem.
I then left it for a few days whilst I did a bit of research into the problem. Then the other day I booted the iBook and it began to continue with the installation. It asked for disc's 2 and 3. After finishing disc 3, the installation was complete and it began to show the welcome video which then turned into a cube which froze about 45 degrees into its turn and wouldn't respond. The sound was also repeating (just your common lockup).
I powered the unit down and attempted to do a clean install but it began to do the same thing as before (boots install disc and loads a light blue screen). Verbose mode does the same thing at that point so I was unable to perform a clean install.
Hope there is enough info provided to help better determine what is causing the problem.
I'm using Panther 10.3, Tiger is not installed (I didn't correctly list the details for the iBook - apologies for that).
I can boot the Apple Hardware Test cd fine which works as it should. I have no problems with that. However, whenever I try to boot from the HDD it just does what I described above. I see the Apple logo with the spinning grey gear which then goes to a light blue screen and not much more happens. It also does the same with the Panther install disc's. However, it works on some occasions.
The disc's are the ones which came with the unit so I can only assume that they are original system install disc (grey in color).

  • USB Hard Drive

    Hi,
I just bought my iBook G3 running OS X 10.3.2, I am new to Mac aniway. I tried to plug in my 40GB USB Hard Drive (2.5" formated using Win XP) but It was nothing happened. Can anyone help me?

It sounds like a laptop size HD. My HD enclosure is firewire and usb. If I plug it in via USB, I must plug in two usb cords -- one for power and one for data. The only way to do this is to use a powered USB hub (i.e., the hub has to be plugged in to a wall outlet) because the color ibook only has one port. Does yours require the use of two USB ports? If so you will have to use a powered hub. In fact, you might have to anyway -- even if you only need one USB cord, if the drive can't draw enough power from your computer, it won't spin up.
The second thing I'd try would be to reformat the drive to use HFS+ (mac's filesystem). But Mac should have no problem reading a FAT32 -- it's a very common format used all over place (even in flash cards and such). I'm betting on the drive not getting enough actual power.
If it is formatted as NTFS, that may be an issue. I'm more familiar with the linux world -- I know that linux is able to reliably read from NTFS, but writing at present is very unreliable. Of course, MS won't help out by releasing specs so people have to figure this out through trial and error. From a 30 second google session, it looks like OSX likewise can read but not write to NTFS. Could be wrong though as I didn't put much effort into it. Here are the results though.
--edit -- read the last comment just now. You will be fine with FAT32 to exchange files back and forth between a windows box and a mac. I'm going to wager $3 on there being an insufficient power issue. Try a powered hub.

  • How do i boot from a local Mac OS 9.1 writeable partition???

    hi!
So i have a ibook(dual usb- 500mz), and i am trying to update my firmware tobeable to access a Netgear 'n-gigabit' router. I understand that i need to update my firmware to do this...
The instructions say, "The iBook Firmware Update 4.1.7 will only run on iBook computers running Mac OS 9.1 from a local drive. If you are using Mac OS X you must boot from a local Mac OS 9.1 writeable partition (not a CD, or network disk)"
    Please someone help!!!
    thanx, ronw.

There may be a matter of being able to access the wi-fi hotspot
via WPA or WPA2; and perhaps the computer's settings aren't
correct for whatever connection is available.
Some of the older hardware (wireless in Mac) may not be able
to connect to the 'house wi-fi' in some retail environs where they
may have a secure environment; or if they are using a different
802.11 protocol than the wireless card in the iBook can support.
The earliest color iBooks and the white iBook G3s only support
the 802.11/b wireless protocol. If the wireless base at a coffee
house or other source is set to support 802.11/g/n; that's out.
Some of the USB wireless internet adapters may work, if that is
the case (of having a source whose signal protocol is newer than
the supported version of the older hardware) most of them now
are USB2.0 and the old iBooks have USB1.1 or slow port speeds.
So, you may be able to connect to 802.11/g/n or a default at lower
than the advertised wireless speed, via a USB adapter.
Not sure what else to check, other than some of the settings; or
how the Locations are set up for choosing a new site when you
are traveling and hoping to connect to some unfamiliar wi-fi site.
While all my semi-modern (G4) Macs have wireless and use an
AirPort Extreme card (802.11/b/g) I seldom travel with a computer.
Mostly that's due to weather or total lack of internet when I travel
in somewhat isolated areas. I have no cell. Lucky to have electricity.
Anyway, hopefully that odd issue can be better explained by the
use of settings and perhaps the base station in that location, if
it IS set to be running only the later internet protocols for wi-fi.
+{And you don't need to install an OS9 version if the need for an+
+update to Firmware is no longer a concern. The question is mute.}+
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • How do I find OS9?

God knows where I put my old install disks. But I have an old blue clamshell candy-colored iBook which can run OS9 and an old backup of Photoshop 4 AND a favorite old plug-in for Photoshop 4... you see where this is going? Can I find an OS9 disk image? The CD tray is broken on the iBook and I want to try the USB thumb drive install idea. Just to use that one plug-in.

There is one retail site that carries such disks -
    http://hardcoremac.stores.yahoo.net/
Unfortunately, thier prices are quite high. EBay would be a better choice. LEM Swap is another possibility -

For your model, a retail OS 9.1 or OS 9.2.1 Install CD should be fine.

  • Disappearing keys!

I had a lime iBook for about four years and have had my G4 for about a year and a half. In that time, several of my keys have been rubbed clear. For whatever reason, this never happened with my previous ibook. I'm a little disappointed and distressed. Is there anyway I can get key replacements or do I have to grab a marker and start coloring?

You can get a whole keyboard replacement from pbparts.com for $89.

  • 800mhz g3 to g4 ram?

this seems to have been asked before but more for powerbook....can i take the extra ram from my g3 to a g4?...both ibooks...if not can i swap the ram with another g3 of any speed?

No. iBook G3 RAM differs from RAM needed for the iBook G4.
You can use the RAM from your iBook G3 in any other G3 iBook. They all take the same RAM, but I'm not certain about the earlier colored iBooks. They take the same size and type RAM, but I'm not familiar enough with them to know if they will take the 512 MB modules (due to firmware limitations). You would have to ask there, if that's what you're wondering.
As a matter of fact, upon further checking, it looks like the 300 MHz iBook G3 is limited to a 256 MB RAM module (but it would be the same type RAM as the iBook G3 (Dual USB) takes).
