Colored icons in finder

using osx 10.6.8 on all my machines, but recently lent a MacPro for a project that has Lion.
using that MacPro it's interesting to test Lion a bit, but one thing I am really wondering about:
finder on osx 10.6.8 shows the icons of "home", "movies", "programs" or external drives in colors. which made it easy to distinguish them.
that has changed in lion: all icons are slightly modified and GREY.
what sense does that make? its a step back in usability.
or is there a way to get colors back on finder icons on lion?
cheers

  • Colored icons in toolbars

    Hello all,
In FrameMaker 9, the user interface has been completely overhauled to look like all of the other Adobe products. One detail in this overhaul was the colors of the toolbar icons. By default, compying to PhotoShop and other products, the icons are grey and show color only when you hover over them. For a product where colors are in the content, this is probably a good choice, but in FrameMaker most content is black and white, and having colored icons in the toolbars does help authors to quickly find the required function for what they want to do.
It turns out to be quite simple to change FrameMaker's usage of icons by changing configuration files, telling Frame to use the colored hover icon as the default one and the grey default icon as the hover version. I have created a script that does this for FrameMaker versions 10 and 11 (in fact, the script will also work for version 12). The script can be executed via the File > Script > Run command and does not require any knowledge of ExtendScript.
Running the script toggles between grey and colored icons in the personal user settings, so every user can have their own settings.
If you are interested in receiving this script (free of charge), send an e-mail to jang at jang dot nl.
    Kind regards from Amsterdam

  • How can i get coloured icons in finder sidebar?

Is there a way to get coloured icons in finder sidebar?
The greyscale icons are not really userfriendly ...
    Thx,
    Chriz

Finder, like the rest of Lion, has been visited by the color vampire
Apple says that its goal with the Lion user interface was to highlight content by de-emphasizing the surrounding user interface elements. You can see this most clearly in sidebar and toolbar icons, which are now monochromatic in most of the important bundled applications. But this has the unfortunate side effect of making interface elements less distinguishable from each other, especially at the small sizes typical in sidebars. I'm not sure the "increased emphasis on content" is enough to balance out the loss, especially in applications like the Finder.

  • Selected Items: Full Color Icon, Not Just Highlight?

I've taken the Total Training for Encore CS4,
and I get the concept of a highlight when a menu item is selected.
I'm trying to make a full-color icon appear beside the button which is selected,
instead of a one-color icon with the color from the Encore color sets.
There must be a way to do this, but I can't find it.
    Thanks.

Yes, AI = Adobe Illustrator - sorry.
As you can see the navigational chart will be involved. That is why I suggested maybe doing it in AI, or a flowchart program. I'd start on paper with a pencil, and then move it to something where I could move the blocks (Buttons) around freely, until I had it done.
This is not a limiation of En, as has been pointed out, but a limitation of the DVD-specs. At least there is a workaround.
Also, be a tad careful when creating this type of navigation, if you're going to also be distributing to users on computers with software DVD players. Buttons will NOT Auto-Activate on a computer. The user will have to basically click their way around, and sometimes this is not really intuitive. They will have to click on the Button on the "real" Menu, and it'll link to the dupe Menu with the graphic. OK, so far. Then, they'll have to click that Button again to activate the real Link to the Asset. Again, a limitation of the DVD-spec and also the implementation of navigation in software players (really a security thing).
Good luck. These can be visually very effective and adds a bit of a Flash feel to the whole thing, but is a lot of work. You'll be spending a bit of time in Photoshop creating the dupe Menus from your real Menus. BTW, it's a lot of fun too.

  • Bring back colored icons in Lion's side bar!

Where can I complain to Apple about their gutting of icon identifiablity in Lion? I tried the 3rd party fix (Colorful Icons) and it was buggy. I uninstalled it. Too risky on the system level.
Who's the brainiac at Apple who decided that gray standard icons on the sidebar -- and echoed in all applications -- would be an improvement? This new normal is hanging up my productivity. Where do I complain so Apple will hear?

OK. I installed the app both ways, and it was worse on my system than the linked version given to me by a friend: http://www.zdnet.com/blog/apple/three-ways-to-fix-os-x-lions-finder-sidebar/1103 8
This time it corrupted Quark Xpress's Preferences and the program wouldn't open. I had to trash its Preferences and reinstate all of them. Great. When I installed the boot-requiring version of this app Suitcase Fusion detected a conflict (saw it as an old verison of itself) and wouldn't open.
Of the programs that would open, only the Adobe family recognized colorful icons. Microsoft programs did not. I'm running the latest update of everything on Lion 10.7.4.
So I uninstalled  this app and made sure manually that all is out.
I summation: not successful, to say the least.
Apple should address this issue, NOT a third party. Are they even listening?

  • How do I restore the Colors in the Finder side panel?

    Hello;
How do I restore the colors to the Finder's Side Panel?

Is this what you're wanting to do?
The icons and how-to are from this website: Replace Lion's Monochromatic Finder Icons with Old-School Colorful Ones. Works with Mt. Lion as the screenshot shows.

  • Aperture - how can I get my colored icons back ??? I don´t like it grey in grey !!!

    Hello,
is there any chance to restore the colorful icons in Aperture 3?
Whatever possible reason the developers may have had, to make
it all grey in grey... I don´t like it that way !!!
Just the same like the loss of colorful icons since OSX Lion...
In my opinion it was much better before, as the combination
of pictograms + color is much more intuitive !!!

The icons are stored inside the Aperture Application package, in the folder
         Contents > Resources
If you want the color back, copy all colored icons (all the tiff images inside this folder) from a previous Aperture version to this folder in the current Aperture version.
To reveal this folder, select the Aperture application in the Finder, cntl-click it, select "Show Package Contents".
But consider carefully, if you really want to patch the Application package. You have to be very careful, and you will have to do it over and over again, with each new update.

  • Why on earth did apple replace the color icons in aperture with monochrome icons!

I really do not like the look of the new monochrome icons. The interface looks broken and buttons are hard to find. Why did apple do this? Please Apple, give users a choice between monochrome and color icons!

Look at the more like this at the right of this post. There are many threads on this.
It's the new design since Lion - Iphoto already has gone gray before Aperture See these links:
Re: After updating to Aperture 3.3 all my icons appears in Black and white. This includes the inspect button, photo stream button, the Facebook / flicker share button. Could you please help here ?
How to bring back the color: (for experienced users only)
Re: Have today loaded the 3.3 up date on Aperture. After the up date the colour of the Menu Bar and all icons showing projects / albums etc are now grey. Any thoughts on how to reestablish the colours.
Send feedback to Apple from the main Aperture menu bar:
         Aperture > Provide Aperture Feedback

  • Can I get color icons back in mail?

I have seen the hacks to get color icons back for Finder and iTunes. Does anyone know how to get them back in Mail?

If you right click on the Mail application in the Applications folder and choose "show package contents" then open the Resources folder, you will find the icons.  I don't recommend mucking with them but theoretically you should be able to modify them or replace them with ones of your choosing. Typically I'd test this idea out before posting (i.e., change an icon and see what happens) but I can live with the icons as they are and I don't want to mess something up on my Mac. Maybe someone will make colored icons and post them for others to install.

  • Hate Lion grey icons, want to get back colored icons

Just switched (a test on a seperate HD) to Lion.  Like most people I use customised colored Icons as part of navigating quuickly.  In the sidebare it is all boringly gray.
I seen some of the discussions about this hot topic but found no permanaet solutions.  Anybody know any?

    I also wanted colours back!!
I got this from a colleague: go to http://osxdaily.com/2011/08/25/get-color-sidebar-icons-back-in-mac-os-x-10-7-lio n-finder-windows/
    These are the steps:
Download and install SIMBL, which you can get here
Download the ColorfulSidebar SIMBL plugin (direct link) or visit the developers home and mount the DMG file
Move the ColorfulSidebar.bundle into the following SIMBL plugin folder:
    ~/Library/Application Support/SIMBL/Plugins/
Either login and logout of Mac OS X, or just kill the Finder through the Terminal to relaunch it:
    killall Finder
Works like a charm, I'm a happy -colourful- Maccer again!

  • The app icons I have on the iPad have just come up blank with the app name under it. How do I get the colorful icons to appear? The apps do work though

The Ipad icons are all just a grey box. How do I get the colorful icons?

First thing to try is a reboot of your iPad. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously ignoring the red slider until the Apple logo appears. Let go of the buttons and let the iPad restart. See if that fixes your problem.

  • Document icon in Finder window differs from Get Info icon

I've been noticing unexpected document icons in Finder windows for quite some time.
This is especially true for PDF files. Since the early days of Mac OS X, I've configured my Macs to open PDF files in Adobe Reader, and I'm accustomed to seeing an Adobe PDF document icon on each PDF file. For some time, I've been seeing different PDF icons, e.g., a document with fuzzy text lines and a black ring binding on the left edge.
I thought this might be a custom icon. But when I do a Get Info on the PDF file, the conventional Adobe PDF icon appears in the Get Info window.
Is this different between the Finder icon and the Get Info icon a bug or a feature?
    -- Ward

It's a feature. Any window that has the View Options set to "Show Icon Preview" will do that. It actually is rather handy in a folder that is set to icon view, with nice BIG icons, you can often see the first page (which is what is displayed) clearly enough to recognize exactly what the file is. In List view it isn't at all helpful, nor is it helpful in those cases where you have icon view set, but the icons are quite small (as is the case on my Desktop, and, I suspect, on most people's Desktops). A pdf that has multiple pages will additionally show the "binder" along the left edge. The Finder is drawing these custom icons on the fly from the contents of the file. The only way to defeat it is to turn of the Show Icon Preview for the folder(s) where you don't want an essentially useless and often counter-productive icon. Do that from the Finder's View menu item, Show View Options. Oh, and every folder has different options for each view. So you can turn it off for List view, but have it turned on for icon view, where it might actually be useful.

  • Color icons gone in Dreamweaver CC (version 13)

    Hi.
Whay are the color icons in Dreamweaver CC (version 13 mac) gone? Very bad
Much harder to see if i'm connected to remote site is one very frustrating thing.
I managed to replace some of the icons with versions from DW6. But many are still missing.
Does anyone have a good tip for replacing all of them?
    Regards
    Olle

Well ... I know they where removed ... but I'm missing them
The bottom of the thread in that link leads to this statment from Adobe
    http://blogs.adobe.com/dreamweaver/2012/10/dreamweaver-creative-cloud-update-12-1-faqs.htm l
"To help you focus on the page and avoid distraction from colorful elements in the user interface, color options for Insert icons have been deprecated."
Ha ha ... so I need help focus on the page and not get distracted by color icons
I think it would be good to have an option to choose color or gray. Like it was before.
It's not helping me to focus on the page with only gray icons. What a stupid thing to say ...
I think a little color makes things look better (and easier to know if i'm connected to the server or not).
Witch one below stands out the most?
    Regards

  • Image icons in Finder

When I copy a lot of images into a folder, the icons in Finder aren't always created correctly. Can anyone tell me why or how to update them once they have been created?
    Here is a sample:

I tried several copies of hundreds of images both to a new folder on my desktop and to a new folder on the RAID. In all instances the icons were created correctly. I removed the com.apple.finder.plist and rebooted. The icons were then all recreated correctly. It looks like I'll have to reorder all the folders as the files are all jumbled up by name and such in the Finder window when viewing in icon mode, but I can deal with that.
I use Bibble to convert my RAW camera images into JPG images. Since Bibble makes use of multiple processors and threads to convert the images, I'm wondering if Finder is trying to create the thumbnails before each of the Bibble threads has completed. Next time I'll try running Bibble WITHOUT the finder window open, so that finder will have complete images to create thumbnails from when I open up the folder.
    Anyway, thanks for the tip.
