  • RGB color in inDesign changes (washed out) after exporting it to PDF

    Hi,
I am new to InDesign and i have a hard time figuring out how could I export my InDesign file to PDF without affecting the color.
    This is what I do.
    1. I created a new document with Transparency Blend Space set to Document RGB
    2. I created a box using the rectangle tool and filled it up with RGB color, R=126 G=12 B=110
    3. The color in Indesign is just how i wanted it, however, the problem arises when i export the file now to PDF
    4. Instead of the color i wanted, the color was changed to a lighter color, or washed out.
    5. THis happens even in text have the same RGB setting.
How could I export it to PDF with the same color, without being washed out?
I really appreciate your help on this. Thanks.

That sounds like the Color Picker, which works a bit differently in ID than in Illustrator or Photoshop. If the cursor is not in one of the RGB fields when you say OK you won't get RGB color. You can see this by noting the text in the Add ... Swatch button. My guess is you added the color as the CMYK conversion which is a bit lighter.
You might want to use the panel menu in the Swatches panel instead, or the new swatch button at the bottom of the panel while holding down the Alt key to open the new swatch definition dialog. You want to create a Process color and change the type to RGB, then enter the values in the RGB fields. Or if what you want is really Pantone 249U you can define a Spot swatch and choose Pantone Solid Uncoated and then specify the 249. I'll warn you though, that CS6 uses Lab values for displaying spot colors and 249U is considerably lighter than either the RGB you specified or the 249C. In earlier versions the book value conversions were used. Even when using Lab display values through Ink Manager in CS5, the coated and uncoated swatches incorrectly look the same in ID, and in Illustrator CS5 you would need to turn on overprint preview to see a difference.
Here are a couple of screen captures from PDFs exported from ID CS5 and CS6 using High Quality Print. The colored boxes with the lables were pasted from Illustrator CS5 to be sure I was using the same color definitions and that theywere behaving as native objects. Below are the same boxes placed:
and here is how the screen looked in CS6 in ID (notice the difference in the placed .ai file -- the screen preview is NOT using the Lab values, although it exports with them):
I don't know what the content is and how you present it, but it doesn't sound like a web page. That said, if you choose Web for intent in Document Setup you can still use print size paper sizes for the document and change the rulers after the doc is created to read inches or millimeters or other units of your choice instead of pixels and the file will use default RGB swatches and default to RGB when making new colors.

  • Converting to spot colors in InDesign

Hi, Im trying to create a two color job in InDesign that will be black and red. The problem I have is that our imagesetter is not separating the colors.
I was told that the red color needs to be a spot color in InDesign for the imagesetter to know to separate the colors. Otherwise, if the colors are not set as a spot color then it sends the file as CMYK separations or grayscale separations.
The question I have is how can I change the images (and text) in my InDesign file to be set as a spot color? Thanks in advance.

You can import a grayscale image and use your two spot colors to create a mixed ink color, or you can create a duotone in PS, or if is line-art a multicolor DCS file. If it is line-art you can also create two separate grayscale or bitmap (black & white) images of each element in PS line them up in ID and apply your spot color to each. Too bad you can not color each layer PSD grayscale file in ID.

  • Importing a .psd flat or layered gives different colors in InDesign

I have an RGB .psd file, with sRGB profile. When it's Placed in InDesign, the colors look like expected.
When in Photoshop the Background layer is double clicked (to make it a layer), and the file is saved without any changes,
the colors in InDesign look dull (like if there's some kind of CMYK-simulation going on).
This happens with all other images on the page where it is Placed.
On other pages, the flat file still looks bright and RGB-ish, but as soon as a layered file is added, the colors change.
As soon as I delete the layered image, the colors jump back to bright. It happens in Print, Web and Digital Publishing modes.
I don't want all this! (I use InDesign to make an onscreen presentation, and I like the look of the RGB-images, which are Cinema 4D renders, but I need some layering as well)
    Any ideas on this?
    Thanks!

Well, it is a document setting. When there is transparency on the page, ID switches to what is essentially overprint preview mode to show you more accurately what is going to happen to your output. Transparency flattening is handled per spread, so any transparent object affects everything on the spread.

  • I am having difficulty installing Pantone Plus Series colors into InDesign CC 2014.

I cannot figure out how to install PANTONE Plus Series Solid Coated 336 New Colors into InDesign CC 2014. I have installed the PANTONE color manager on my hard drive. Now what?

There was a thread on this recently....
You have to install one of the v2 fanbooks as the 336 supplement is now obsolete. Select the book you want, then from the file menu export to the programs of your choice.

  • Matching Raster and Vector RGB color in InDesign CS3.

We print on a Durst Lambda RGB imaging device to photographic paper. All color management is done as an early bind (raster files are converted to the printer's color space and vector colors are chosen from a palette database). So basically the files must go through InDesign without any color change in raster or vector information. We have clients that require specific RGB builds for logo colors the are present in both their raster and vector files.
Color Management is set to "North American General Purpose 2" with "RGB: Preserve Embedded Profiles" selected.
    1) The file is exported as a PDF 1.4, High Quality, PDF/X_None.
    2) The PDF was ripped on a Cheetah RIP (Jaws level 3) with no color management on.
    3) Solid raster colors such as 0-255-0 will reproduce as 0-255-1.
    4) The color differences between the raster and vector are usually 1-4 points.
    5) The vector is consistent as was input in the programit's only the raster that changes. When you are trying to match raster and vectors logo colors it is a killer.
However, I can go into the InDesign (or Illustrator) color settings and turn color management off (This is our current workflow). In doing this the RGB working space uses the monitor profile and "color management policies" are set to OFF. With these settings the RGB raster and vector match. The problem with this work flow is two fold:
    1) We have other devices than our RGB Durst Lambda that can use the InDesign color managementVutek flat bed 3200 and grand format 3360.
    2) We have had many occurrences where the custom "color management off" settings have reverted back to the default "North American General Purpose 2"without any intervention.
I have tried this with different RIP's with the same results.
Does anyone have an idea to create a simple PDF workflow and keep the color information consistent?
    Program: InDesign CS3 5.0.2
    Platform: Mac OS 10.5.2
Computer: G5 tower with 4 gigs of RAM

I believe that setting is an old Illustrator setting that has been saved to effectively turn the color management off. The monitor profile effects the image displayedit doesn't effect the color transform.
Anyway, the color management I want to use is the "North American General Purpose 2".
    To reiterate:
    The procedure:
    1) The file is exported as a PDF 1.4, High Quality, PDF/X_None.
    2) The PDF was ripped on a Cheetah RIP (Jaws level 3) with no color management on.
    The Problem:
    3) Solid raster colors such as 0-255-0 will reproduce as 0-255-1It changes from the original raster color placed in InDesign.
    4) The color differences between the raster and vector are usually 1-4 points.
    5) The vector is consistent as was input in the programit's only the raster that changes. When you are trying to match raster and vectors logo colors it is a killer.
To summarize, the color of the raster file will change from the original that was place into the documenteven though nothing was selected in InDesign that would change the color (i.e. profile conversion to an output profile or a transparency effect used). The change is slightbut there.

  • Can you change a single color in InDesign on the entire document?

In an InDesign document, is it possible to change one of many colors in the document, throughout the document?  This would be like a Find/Change for colors.

In Addition to what Bob suggested, you can create a swatch for all color used inthe document by using the Add Unmaed Colors command from the swatches panel menu. You can then either repalce the swatch by deleting, or just redefine it.

  • How do I apply a specific background color in InDesign?

The background color is identified in Ps as "edf7e4", and it is a very pale green.  How do I make this the background color for my book cover in InDesign?

You must add a frame to your cover page(s) at the bottom of the stack and fill it with the color that you wish to use (you can keep the RGB definiton and convert on export, too, if you need CMYK for press). Don't forget to bleed the edges where required.

  • White default background color in indesign pdf file

When I export in indesign cs6 pdf file (I made a digital flipbook and I want to upload it on my website) there is a white default color in the background. Is there a way to get rid of this white default color or make it transparent in indesign?

    Hello 99ctc,
We had a quick discussion about your query in the office this morning.
Are you looking to do an animated flipbook which will "float" on your webpage like an animation incorporated into your website... Or you just don't want to have a white background on your pages and would like a different colour?
We couldn't think of any way to do an animation without a white background with exporting from InDesign to PDF, I just don't think InDesign is the right tool for that job. InDesign is more for print publishing or Digital Publishing, not for web animation or creating things that look animated for web. InDesign defaults to a white page for all projects, although the page colour is easy to change it can't be made transparent.
So you can place a background layer in your InDesign document that matches the background colour or pattern of your website so that when you export your flipbook it will open as a document with a background that will match your page.
Flash, or possibly Photoshop and Illustrator depending on what final product you are trying to do, might be better tools for the job that your are looking to accomplish.

  • Grayscale Images Colorized in InDesign Don't Print Properly

Hi, we're having trouble getting proper color output when we colorize grayscale TIF files in InDesign CS3.
We have just a couple basic grayscale TIF files, no transparency, saved with or without embedded profiles (Dot Gain 20%).
We add a foreground and background color to these in InDesign using process colors (no spots). These colors should, and need to, match a couple large swatches of these colors elsewhere on the document.
When we check the colors using Separations Preview, the numbers on the light and dark parts of the image are identical to the process colors they should be. They look correct on screen (with or without Overprint Preview).
We usually print using 'Postscript Printer Determines Color' and let our RIP determine color settings (we have a Doc12 w/ Splash RIP). We tried many different settings on the RIP, no luck. We also tried printing using 'Let InDesign Determine Colors'. No luck. The colors are just slightly off. (ie - 0, 30, 100, 0 looks almost like pure yellow, much brighter).
If I export to a PDF and print, it looks correct. If I make a CMYK version of the photo in Photoshop and use a gradient map to apply the same colors, it prints correctly.
    - ANY IDEAS???
    Thanks a lot.

I am also having problems.  Upgraded to Acrobat DC.  I use a Mac (latest software)
When I export from InDesign CC to Acrobat DC the interactive elements - especially buttons - go cranky.  I get a strange smudgy kind of drop shadow but in a variety of colours behind the arrows, buttons etc.  All very strange.  It gets worse if I apply a drop shadow and bevel and emboss to the button (even a home made button rather than one of the sample buttons).
I'm currently working away from home and so can't try any other computer.
    Strange.

  • How to remove stubborn colors in Indesign and Illustrator swatch palette

    Hello,
There are actually two issues I have with colors in Illustrator and Indesign: One is to remove unused colors in the swatch palette. After I make sure all colors are correctly used in my file, I will select "unused colors" to get rid of extraneous colors but the unused colors still appears in the palette. Second, a color is used in the file (e.g. color designated not to print) but somehow it doesn't appear in the swatch palette until I select "show added colors" in the option pull down menu and instantaneously, it reappears in the palette. How does one hide the color while it is clearly used in the file.
Does anyone have answers to these puzzling issues?
    Sutagami

Thanks! I'll try the methods in the link you've provided but do you know the answer to the second question which is clicking on the "new add colors" in the option view. I've seen this happen in several instances where the actual color is being used but it's not visible until you select "new added colors". Keep in mind that this designated color (a process color of magenta) is intended not to print because it's a callout for dieline.
I presumed the creator of this file main purpose is to reveal colors that are printing but hide non-printed colors like magenta dieline in the swatch palette.

  • Duotone in Photoshop vs. color in InDesign

Hi all! It's been literally years since I've done a 2-color project, so I'm not sure of the best course of action. I have a 2-color invitation I'm designing. They want black and a pantone color. There are two background images that are Photoshop files.
It's it better to make the photoshop image a duotone? Or should I just make it grayscale, import it into InDesign... and color it with the Pantone color from the swatch palette?
    Thanks!
    julie

    That will work.
But you can have more control with Photoshop if you need it -

  • Color management - Indesign with PS calibrated images?

    How to:
In PS  CMYK color space  looks great using laser printer. Printer and monitor are calibrated - so what you see is what you get - but only in PS.
When the images are imported to Indesign or  or converted to a PDF the colors look awful, dirty, with cast.
What is the best way to preserve color when using images in different design software.
Should color space be changed even though is all printed on same CMYK laser printer.
Any help would be great. Thanks.

    >> In PS  CMYK color space  looks great using laser printer. Printer and monitor are calibrated - so what you see is what you get
Photoshop (Ps) is apparently making a good Conversion to your Print Space-Profile (or you are getting lucky they are close).
    >> When the images are imported to Indesign or  or converted to a PDF the colors look awful
Be sure you embedd profiles and set up your Adobe Color Settings to use the embedded profiles.
    >> What is the best way to preserve color when using images in different design software
Establish device-independent 'native' Color Spaces (Working RGB and CMYK) and CONVERT to your PROOFING (print/monitor/Web) ICC profiles as a last step in the printing process and/or Saving a production copy in the target color space.
    >> Should color space be changed even though is all printed on same CMYK laser printer.
Your Source Spaces will typically be different than your Print Space and your Monitor Space and your Web Space — CMYK is different in that it may be also be both Source/Target spaces — I create/work/edit in high-bit, high-gamut RGB and CONVERT to CMYK in the Printer Utility or in a final production copy when I know the target CMYK profile.
I recommend reading up on how Adobe Color Management Systems use ICC profiles...
