Coloring a part of an object

Hello!
I'm new to Illustrator and I came across a little problem. This is very simple and I'm sorry if the question already exist somewhere in the forums, I've searched for it, but I can't find what I need.
I am trying to color a part of an object in specific form. (see the picture below)
So, I have a restangular and a circle in different color. What I am trying to achieve is only the part of the circle that is over the restangular to be visible (example with photoshop- restangular on layer 1, circle on another layer above it, alt+click to create a clipping mask and it will produce the effect im looking for). However, when creating clipping mask here (from object-clipping mask-make) it seems that either the circle or the restangular will disappear. Any ideas? Are there other ways to achieve this, or I'm looking into the wrong one?
Thanks in advance!

You already wrote the answer: clipping mask.
It's about the same in Illustrator.

  • Is it possible to set a different color to part of a cell?

    Hi all,
    I am have trouble setting cell-specific Renderer.
    I have followed the instructions in the UISwing tutorial
    and extended JTable definition to overload getCellRenderer()
    to return myRenderer
    final JTable tableView = new JTable(dataModel){
    public TableCellRenderer getCellRenderer(int row, int column) {
    TableCellRenderer colorRenderer = new ColorRenderer();
    return(colorRenderer);
    My class definition for ColorRenderer is as follows:
    class ColorRenderer extends JLabel implements TableCellRenderer {
    public ColorRenderer() {
    public Component getTableCellRendererComponent(
    JTable table, Object color,
    boolean isSelected, boolean hasFocus,
    int row, int column) {
    setForeground(Color.blue);
    return this;
    Is it possible to set a different color to part of a cell?
    eg. I have "TEST,CELL,COLOR" as a string in a cell.
    Can I set a different color to the substring "CELL"?
    Your suggestions will be accepted most gratefully!
    Thanks in advance
    -Kalpana

    You should inherit your table cell renderer from a container, for example JPanel, add different JLabels to the panel and color them separately.

  • Issue: color assigning, eyedropper, groups, type object and stuff

    Hi there!
    I have some wierd problems with my beloved illustrator. Eyedropper and swatches assigning seems to be wild... I will try to describe three situations: what is happening. Tell me please, what am I doing wrong...
    1. Group of shapes in one fill color, black for example.
    - I have group of black shapes, complex logo perhaps. They are literally grouped.
    - I want to change their fill color to white.
    - I select the grup with black arrow and choose white from swatches.
    - Nothing happens.
    - I have to ungroup shapes, then select them with black arrow and then I can change the color.
    2. Group of shapes in several fill colors: black, yellow and white for example.
    - I have several grouped shapes in different colors.
    - I want to change all of their fill colors to white.
    - I select the grup with black arrow.
    - Illustrator should show "?" in the Fill/Stroke part of the tools panel, becouse there are selected shapes with different colors. But instead I see completely different set of fill and stroke color. Probably ones I've used in some before action.
    - But OK, fine. I try to assign one color to all of my shapes anyway. But gues what?
    - Nothing happens.
    - I have to ungroup shapes, then select them with black arrow and then I see my "?" and then I can change the color.
    3. Text object, plain text, paragraph, grup of text layers - all the same.
    - I have some black text.
    - I want to change their fill color to white.
    - I select the text object with black arrow and choose white from swatches.
    - Nothing happens.
    - I have to use text tool to highlight my text and then I can change the color.
    In all those cases I use swatches or eyedropper to take color from another shape - result s the same. This is crazy... Don't know what to do. And the worst thing is I have same problems at work, where I use Mac, and at home, where I use Windows.
    Please help!

    I'm confused. Where do you see two copies of my text?
    http://drrop.it/files/5277fe05e9d8c.jpg
    Besides, I would say the easiest way would be to select object with black arrow (V), then use eyedropper (I) and click on my rectangle there. But I just can't. Maybe it's because in my file, you can see two layers of text and I see one...

  • How do I distort only part of an object?

    A newbie, still getting used to manipulating (esp distorting) objects. I haven't been able to figure out how to distort just a portion of an obect.
    I have an object (a compound shape) with many anchor points, an object made from a scanned ink drawing. It's a helmet with two intricate pieces that come down on either side. I need to make these hanging parts shorter while the rest of the object remains unchanged, so I want to basically select these parts of the object via the direct selection tool and resize them vertically, but all of the distortion tools I can find effect the entire object.
    I tried to separate these parts of the object, distort, then re-attach them to the main object, but then I loose the compound shape and all the "holes" on the inside of the object become filled and don't come back even when I re-compond the shape. Also, this seems like an impractical work around to a simple problem.
    What am I missing?
    thanks in advance

    Wade, as the OP said, intricate pieces, imagine more complex paths, like the straps of this helmet. Otherwise as you suggested, moving up  the bottom points of a shape like a rectangle with no other points between bottom and top, of course will work nicely
    I wish Illustrator had a feature similar to the smart content aware scaling in Photoshop where the user can mark the areas to scale and the areas to be preserved.

  • Adjusting color in part of an image in a photo.

    Hi, just bought Photoshop CC and am stuck.  I just received a photo of my uncle that was taken through the glass of the frame it was in.  The right side of his face is lighter than the rest of his face.  How do I adjust this color? You can also see some lightening of the lower right portion of his hat. Other issues have been corrected.  Portion of photo attached.  Thanks.

    Thank you so much.  I will give it a shot. Your help is greatly appreciated.  Will let you know how it works.

  • PMS color in a vector smart object

    How do I retain a spot color in a vector smart object placed in Photoshop. Once the SO is updated within the PS file, the separations palette does not reflect the change, and the spot color is no longer there.

    I thank everyone for their input, I guess I should have provided a little more information:
    The file supplied by a client. Is an Illustrator file. Within this AI file is a PSD file. An element in the PSD file is a vector smart object, which needs to have a PMS color applied. I can apply a PMS color to the SO, then save and update the PSD, then update the link in the AI file, but the color converts back to 4C, and the spot color is lost. I cannot come up with a way to maintain the spot color in the SO. I was thinking of just taking the SO out of the PSD altogether, and placing it in the final AI doc, but there are some PS effects applied to it that I cannot reproduce in AI. For added difficulty, the PSD cannot be flattened, because it has some pretty crafty transparancy masking in it. I would love to provide the file itself, but for security reasons, I am unable to do so.

  • Color blend without creating intermediate object

    I suspect the answer to this may be painfully obvious, so please put any "Doh!" thoughts on hold.
    I have two overlapping objects of very different shapes, each with a gradient. I want to smooth the color transition between them so that it looks as if there's a single surface.
    When I use the Blend tool Illustrator not only blends the colors, it creates an intermediate object as well. Is there a way simply to do the color without creating a new object?

    Blends, by definition, create intermediate objects between the original key objects. A Blend creates objects. It does not create color ramps independent of objects. That's what a graduated fill does, but grad fills are very limited in AI compared to just about all of its competing programs.
    Mesh Gradients can create multi-directional grad fills. But using the feature can easily become very tedious depending upon the specifics of what you are trying to do.
    You need to describe what you are actually trying to do.
    It sounds like you may be trying to build simple highlights and shadows to "model" what is to look like 3D surfaces. Using ordinary Blends is the most common way to do that. If that's what you are trying to do, the following may help:
    -To avoid the unsightly sawtooth or twisting or spiking "giveaways" of highlight / shadow blends, they should be made between paths which contain the same number of points.
    Using paths with equal number of points may require stacking two or three separate blends, instead of assuming the whole start-to-end color ramp has to be accomplished in a single Blend. For example: Start with the underlying shape, and create a Blend that goes from the outer color (rearmost) color to a midtone color (frontmost). Those two paths have the same number of points. Then, create a separate pair of paths (again with same number of points) for a separate highlight. That blend goes from the midtone color (rearmost) to the highlight color (frontmost).
    -Make sure the two paths used in the Blend have the same direction.
    -You can "index" two corresponding points on the two paths being used for a Blend by directSelecting a point on each path before creating the Blend.
    -Realize that Blends are not limted to paths that have solid fills. You can Blend between paths that have Gradient Fills. Many seemingly complex shading problems can be accomplished with simple Blends by just blending between two paths that have the same number of points, but have slightly different grad fills.
    -Specified Steps is almost always the best Blend option to use for modeling highlights/shadows. But use common sense. Do not assume that 256 steps are required to get the "smoothest" color transition. For example, if the start-to-finish color ramp of a highlight only spans 10% of a spot color, nothing is gained by using 256 steps. A mere 10 steps will probably do just fine. (Can your eye discern a smaller-than-1% change in halftone dot size?)
    Similarly, even if the colors are radically different, 10 or 20 steps may be just fine if the
    distance spanned by the Blend is small. (Can your eye detect 256 different different-shaped edges within a quarter-inch span?

  • Printing part color and part black and white

    Hello Everyone,
    I am wondering if you happen to know how to print part of the page color and part black and white. In other words, what I am looking to do is print a page, and be able to select how much of it is with color ink, and how much of it is just with black ink. Is there a way to do this? Even if its just choosing a half page to be one or the other.
    Any info in regards to this would be great.
    Thanks

  • How to change font/ font color etc in a graphic object using JCombobox?

    Hello
    My program im writing recently is a small tiny application which can change fonts, font sizes, font colors and background color of the graphics object containing some strings. Im planning to use Jcomboboxes for all those 4 ideas in implementing those functions. Somehow it doesnt work! Any help would be grateful.
    So currently what ive done so far is that: Im using two classes to implement the whole program. One class is the main class which contains the GUI with its components (Jcomboboxes etc..) and the other class is a class extending JPanel which does all the drawing. Therefore it contains a graphics object in that class which draws the string. However what i want it to do is using jcombobox which should contain alit of all fonts available/ font sizes/ colors etc. When i scroll through the lists and click the one item i want - the graphics object properties (font sizes/ color etc) should change as a result.
    What ive gt so far is implemented the jcomboboxes in place. Problem is i cant get the font to change once selecting an item form it.
    Another problem is that to set the color of font - i need to use it with a graphics object in the paintcomponent method. In this case i dnt want to create several diff paint.. method with different property settings (font/ size/ color)
    Below is my code; perhaps you'll understand more looking at code.
    public class main...
    Color[] Colors = {Color.BLUE, Color.RED, Color.GREEN};
            ColorList = new JComboBox(Colors);
    ColorList.addActionListener(new ActionListener() {
                public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent ev) {
                     JComboBox cb = (JComboBox)ev.getSource();
                    Color colorType = (Color)cb.getSelectedItem();
                    drawingBoard.setBackground(colorType);
              });;1) providing the GUI is correctly implemented with components
    2) Combobox stores the colors in an array
    3) ActionListener should do following job: (but cant get it right - that is where my problem is)
    - once selected the item (color/ font size etc... as i would have similar methods for each) i want, it should pass the item into the drawingboard class (JPanel) and then this class should do the job.
    public class DrawingBoard extends JPanel {
           private String message;
           public DrawingBoard() {
                  setBackground(Color.white);
                  Font font = new Font("Serif", Font.PLAIN, fontSize);
                  setFont(font);
                  message = "";
           public void setMessage(String m) {
                message = m;
                repaint();
           public void paintComponent(Graphics g) {
                  super.paintComponent(g);
                  //setBackground(Color.RED);
                  Graphics2D g2 = (Graphics2D) g;
                  g2.setRenderingHint
                  g2.drawString(message, 50, 50);
           public void settingFont(String font) {
                //not sure how to implement this?                          //Jcombobox should pass an item to this
                                   //it should match against all known fonts in system then set that font to the graphics
          private void settingFontSize(Graphics g, int f) {
                         //same probelm with above..
          public void setBackgroundColor(Color c) {
               setBackground(c);
               repaint(); // still not sure if this done corretly.
          public void setFontColor(Color c) {
                    //not sure how to do this part aswell.
                   //i know a method " g.setColor(c)" exist but i need to use a graphics object - and to do that i need to pass it in (then it will cause some confusion in the main class (previous code)
           My problems have been highlighted in the comments of code above.
    Any help will be much appreciated thanks!!!

    It is the completely correct code
    I hope that's what you need

  • Color shifting of a complex object

    I have a bitmap image of a flower that I would like to fade
    from one base color to another (i.e. red, orange, yellow, white,
    pink, etc). The image is moderately complex with two or three dozen
    shades in the image. Is there an easy way to do this?
    I feel like I should know the answer...maybe staring at the
    screen the last 18 hours has rotted my brain...

    This kind of thing can be a little tricky. But I have a
    solution for you, you will need to determine your pallet colors and
    put them in the array, in the object format as indicated. And
    because it's a prototype construction, you call call the method
    anywhere, on any mc instance.
    Try this:

  • Send complex data via web service : discards parts of complex object sent

    Hi,
       I have to send an object to the server via a web service. The object A (say) that is being sent has a lot of properties. Now A has an array collection of objects of type B which in turn has an array collection of type C and so on..
    The problem is some of the data is not a part of the xml data sent out.
    I have included the snapshots of the data given to the web service and data sent out as seen in the network monitor below.
    Object sent to the web service
    xml data sent out as seen
    in the request body in the Network monitor
    The object in red rectangle above is of type "Slide" which has an object "caption" of type Caption and other simple properties like slideId (int), slideNumber(int) and storyBoardId(int).
    The object in the red rectangle is the xml data of "Slide" corresponding to the object in the red rectangle in the image to the left.
    Notice that the entire object "caption" has been dropped while the simple properties have been represented.
    I am stuck and cant find a solution to this issue or a work around
    any pointers would be really helpful.
    thanks in advance

    Posting more images .. have simplified the object a lot but still have the same issue.
    1. The request object description as given in the asmx [seen in the browser]
    2. The request object's description as given in the wsdl [seen in browser]
    3. The object that is being sent to the web service -- as seen in the debugger of Flash builder
    4. The object data in xml being sent out of Flex client -- as seen in network monitor of Flash Builder
    NOTE : The object data as seen in the network monitor doesnt have the caption" part at all! whereas the debugger shows the caption.
    5. The object recieved at the web method  of the web service -- as seen in the debugger of visual studio running the service
    If anyone has any work around for this pl let me know.

  • Changing color stop gradients by eyedropping objects on art board

    I'd like to be able to change a single color stop on a gradient by picking a color of an object on the art board. I know you can make custom swatches then pull them onto the gradient, but that doesnt work when you just want to add a color on the fly. Also if you want to change a color stop using the color picker it should come up with the color that the stop currently is, not something else. Thanks!

    When the color stop in the gradient is selected, take the eyedropper, press shift and click on the color you want applied to the stop.
    Pressing shift means sometimes that colors will be converted through color management though. For example when clicking on a placed photo.
