Colorized video during import - Appears to be a bad video signal

I went to import about 15 minutes of new footage today and the clips being import are all distorted. It's hard to explain, but it looks as though they're colorized or cartoon looking. Not at all real color tones. And there are horizontal lines through the video.
I've imported previous footage fine before. The only thing new is the new OS, 10.5. Prior to this I've been able to import perfect video and had no problems. I'm using a HDTV camcorder (Canon HV20).
Has anyone experienced this or know what is causing it?
Thanks, Brien

The problem was I was using the previous version of iMovie (5.0.2) and not the latest 6.0.4. Apparently when I download the newer version the installer created a folder called previous version but put the newer version in that folder. So I thought I was using the latest version only to come to find out it was launching the previous version loose in my Applications folder. Obviously a technical glich from Apple that will probably effect a lot of other people over time until they realize this.

  • RAW files look corrupted with color streaking during import

During import in Lightroom about 25% of my files look corrupted (with color streaks, etc.). The RAW images upload perfectly in iPhoto on the same computer but for some reason will become corrupted in Lightroom. I am able to delete the corrupted images in the LR Library and reload them with about a 50% success rate. I've tried different memory cards, cf importers, etc. Only an issue in LR. Sometimes they export with the streaking and other times they export perfectly fine. Even if they export fine it makes it impossible to edit in LR. Below is an example of how the image appears. Any answers?

Raw files have a camera-embedded JPG.
I would guess the files are corrupt, LR is showing you this corruption, while other programs are only interpreting the JPG and hiding the corruption.
Can you upload one of these photos that iPhoto shows as ok, while LR shows corruption?  Upload one to www.dropbox.com <http://www.dropbox.com>  and post a public download link, here.

  • Occasionally Freezing Video During Import...Again.

(please excuse me if this has been discussed, but i couldn't find anything about it in a search)
a few OS updates ago, there was a problem with FCP caused by Spotlight where imported video has momentary "freezes" every 30 seconds or so. during these "freezes," the audio continued, but the video locked in a still frame for a few seconds. this problem was fixed by disabling Spotlight in the Preferences window. then an OS update fixed the problem for good.
i'm experiencing the problem again with 10.4.11, is anyone else? i just noticed it, and i haven't yet tried disabling Spotlight, because i use Spotlight and i didn't want to do that...

A simple search of the forum will turn up many posts.
If QT 7.3 is the root of the issue and you do not have a cloned drive to use to restore your bonked system, a full erase and reinstall is in your future.
Some reading for those slack times during the reinstall.

  • PE9 Drops video during import of mt2s with VC-1 codec

You can see in the first screenshot that the mt2s files shows up in Premiere Elements as only an audio clip.  You can see in the second screenshot the video and audio codes (VC-1 and A52) which are supposed to be supported in PE9 per link below.  What am I doing wrong?
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/862/cpsid_86248.html
    Thanks,
    http://www.t1shopper.com/

Steve: Sorry, I was posting the same time as you and so missed your post!
Can you at least confirm you've properly set up your project for this video format.
I didn't!  So I chagned it to the below (see screenshot) and tried it again but still getting the same result, no video, only audio.
How did you get it into your computer?
This file is off of a Bluray disk that was already encoded as a Bluray movie, so of course those files are in the D:\BDMV\STREAM directory.
Usually, when you use Premiere Elements' Get Media tool to bring in video from an AVCHD camcorder, the video is M2T or MTs format.
Agreed, but that's not the case here.
...ensure that you have the latest version of Quicktime
    Yes, I do.
please give us some details from your workflow...
    Sure!
    Open PE9
    Open project with above settings
Click on the Organize -> Get Media tab.
Open the 00001.mt2s file on the Bluray disk
    PE9 confirms the file
I preview the file and it's only audio.
    Thanks!
PS.  Here's what PE9 says the properties of the file are.  Note it saysit's an "MPEG Movie."

  • How to maintain audio continuity with segments of bad video

Anyone have any editing tricks for keeping good audio footage when there are interspersed segments of poor quality video? For example, I have 10 min of contiguous audio that I don't want to disrupt. Halfway through, however, I moved to camera to a different perspective and the time during the movement is nauseating footage of the floor. Obviously the pros using multiple cameras could simply splice in footage from another camera for the time period during which the main camera had bad video footage. I'm only using one camera, however. Any tricks for keeping the audio intact, but 'hiding' segments of bad video? fade in and out of a photograph/still image? maybe I need a good reference for video editing. thanks in advance for any/all thoughts.

Always shoot a bit of 'spare' footage at the beginning, and whenever there's an opportunity (..I know this is being wise after the event, but it may be of help for next time..) ..e.g; if it's a wedding, shoot guests arriving, or people sitting attentively, or bits of the building (..stained glass windows, etc..) ..or if it's a theatre or a play, ditto ..so you've got relevant, related bits which you can drop in during camera moves.
As Karsten and Beverly say, by using "Paste Over at Playhead" to insert extra material on top of the audio, you automatically keep the sync between picture and sound, because iMovie removes exactly the same length of original video as the length which you're "pasting in" to replace the bad footage ..thus keeping sync.
If you don't have "..a photograph/still image.." to drop in, you could always create a still from some of your video footage (put the Playhead where you want it, then use ShiftApple'S' to Create Still Frame), maybe soften it or crop it a bit so that it doesn't look exactly like a frame from the video, then do another couple of similar stills, dissolve between them, and then use that set of stills/dissolves to replace your bad footage.*
'Paste Over at Playhead' is the way to keep it in perfect sync without having to desperately calculate timings, etc..
*P.S: It's best to Export that sequence of stills-with-dissolves to QuickTime as 'Full Quality' so that it becomes one whole Clip, then re-import it, and that way you can position it exactly where you want it, without any of its separate components (stills, dissolves) coming apart, or being interpreted as individual elements.

  • Video Macroblocking During Import

This may be the start of a long thread and I apologize in advance if I don't have all the correct information but here is my gear list-
Mac Mini Server 2011 (see more specs in signature below)
    Final Cut Pro X 10.0.4
Canon Vixia HF G10 (importing AVCHD MP4 video, 1920x1080 24Mb/s)
32GB Sandisk Extreme SD (transfer speeds at 45MB/s)
    Here is what I'm experiencing-
I've been working a project for about the last month continuing through the middle of May.  I've been shooting upwards of 2.5 hours on a show up to three times a week.  This is easily the most footage I've shot in this short amount of time and I've been putting this newly purchased Mini Server through its paces.  For the most part it's held up swimmingly but one problem has come up a handful of times.  To import the footage I transfer to the memory card and then plug that into the SDXC cardslot on the Mini.  This is a brand new memory card as I had noticed the issue with my first card and bought the SanDisk in an attempt to resolve it.  Transferring directly from the camera is very slow but so far has yielded no issues (though admittedly I have not reviewed all the footage from either import method due to time constraints.
Upon import of large video files (2+ hours, around 26GB), I will occassionally experience macroblocking and/or video distortion.  It only lasts for seconds at a time but cannot be cleared up.  I can go back to the camera and re-import the footage and at least the portion that was damaged during that first attempt is fine.  Unfortunately given the the amount of footage I'm shooting and frequency of nights we're taping I simply do not have the ability to ensure the footage is intact each time.  Simply put, there aren't enough hours in the day for me tape for 2.5 hours and then review all of the footage right afterwards.  For that matter I'm also editing the native video files because I don't have time nor hard drive space to transcode.  As a test I've taken a clip and transcoded it to ProRES and the issue remains so I don't think that would help anyways.
I contacted Canon to see if they had heard of this phenomena and they simply stated that since the second attempt at importing appears to clear up the issue that it's not their problem.  I would call Apple but I've had FCPX since it's release and they charge for support beyond the initial ownership period.
I've resorted to using my iPhone as a secondary camera so that I have a wide static shot I can cut away to in a pinch but as you can imagine the footage doesn't really match well.
Thank you if you've read this far and I apologize for not being more brief.  Has anyone else experienced this issue and if so were you able to find a resolution?  I appreciate any assistance in this matter.  If I need to clarify anything I would be more than happy to oblige.
I should note as well that I've been doing a weekly project where we import 60-90 minutes of footage with the same camera and SD cards and have never had this issue.

The problem with that it's all one big video file but when it's stored on the memory card it's split into a bunch of little videos (I think there's a 2GB limit for the file structure of the camera or something).  So while I can try that, it will make a lot more work for me in post because I have to splice together potentially 13 video clips.  I guess I could try importing through the standard Camera Import function built into OSX though.
I'll try that when I shoot again (Sunday) but if anyone else has any suggestions please keep 'em coming.

Holiday Footage taken with an Olympus u Tough 3000, onto a ' 2Gb SD memory card', and then put through a Kingston Card reader Straight into iMovie (Ver: 7.1.4 ),
Starts to load OK, But after taking the prompted steps to import, (and it tells me that it is importing ), A window flags up saying "Error occurred during import, please REVIEW the imported movies CAREFULLY" ! So i click on "OK" the window disappears, and i am left wondering how the **** am i supposed to do that  ? .
But whats more, is My videos show as a new file in iMovies and i can see all the clips as thumbnails, but when the reader is ejected, and the card removed, Although a window shows My New 'Camera imports' file, i can niether see nor access the films in any way to do anything with them.
I am a Novice to this area of Mac, So please, be gentle with me ! Can someone Exlpain ( Clearly !) whats happening, and what i need to do ?

  • Video Falling Out of Synch During Import?

I am importing some video w/ linked audio into iMOvie--the tape appears to be fine, the audio is in synch with the video there. When I complete the import and then play the clip, the video does not appear for a few seconds, but the audio is present. So by the time the video does appear, it is horribly out of synch. How do I fix this? What could cause this to happen in the first place?

    Hi
Most common origin to this is.
    • Camera set on 12-bit audio
    • Camera re-set after battery change (to 12-bit audio)
Go into the menu on/of the Camera and select 16-bit audio
    • Camera recorded in LP-mode (90 min on a 60min tape) - AVOID THIS - A real trouble maker ! ! !
Set Camera into SP-mode (60 min on a 60min tape)
    Your old movie
Set iMovie to import as one large clip - Not as individual clips (in iMovie pref)
    • Now import Your material to TimeLine
    • DIRECTLY after this select the video-clip
    • goto Advanced menu and down to Extract audio
This might work and keep in sync.

  • Video Freezes Momentarily During Import

I am capturing video from my Canon GL2 into my MacBook Pro with Final Cut Express v.1.0.1. During import, video will freeze for a second or 2, but I can still hear audio. If you playback the clip once it is imported, it plays back just the same, with the video freezing and the audio uneffected. This happens almost every time I import. Any idea what I can do for this?
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Hey Al,
I changed the Easy Setup to 48khz and it still freezes between 30 and 50 seconds into every import I do. Could this have something to do with my camera heads? Or is it a RAM issue on the MacBook Pro? I am also having problems when I try to batch capture into Final Cut Pro 4.5. It will capture the first clip, but then when it goes to capture the second clip, it gives me the error message "TAPE STILL TRYING TO THREAD". So I am guessing that the problem is most likely with the Canon GL2. Any other suggestions?
    Thanks.

  • Color shift during video capture (moved from Nseri...

I have noticed that the video camera in my n79 is very sensitive to changes in light.  Often I get a major color shift during a video capture seemingly for no reason, especially when shooting outside.  Is this a defect or should I use a particular setting for video? Current settings are:
    quality: High(TV);
    scene mode:Auto;
    video light: off(shooting video outside during day);
    white balance: Automatic (this MIGHT be the culprit?);
    Color tone:Normal.
Two stills from the same video are attached; the second, a few seconds later, is unnaturally vivid (almost day-glo!).
    Thanks for any suggestions.

    Wow, what a quick reply!
Delivery was going to be Quicktime HD and probably downconvering to SD MPEG2 for a DVD. I was just going to edit in HDV, since I'm not doing anything fancy, just to try it out as a workflow option (and previews for the client). The first couple of projects I've started on my Macbook Pro though have had this hue shift (I can post an example on-line if need be by filming my monitor...) It's not inherent in the actual captured QT file, just when being played back in FCP. When I export out of FCP the QT file looks great as well. I've never had this problem on my G5 tower with HDV from the same camera or captured the same way. I'm worried that it's the univeral copy of FCP or even worse, my Macbook!
    Make sense?
    Thanks

  • Color Balance Issue importing from DV Deck Via Firewire...

The fact that searching google and this formum has lead to me finding NO results, I am wondering whether anyone has or is experiencing similar issues..
For some time now, I have been having this issue, which I just realized is not normal. I have a Sony DV Cam Deck which I use to import via Firewire to Premiere CS5.5. Attached to the Sony Deck I also have a small monitor connected to the composite video output.
The color and white balance look fine on the small monitor, however on the import via firewire, there is tinge through it almost like an incorrect white balance.
YES, I have calibrated and Re-Calibrated my Computer monitors using Spyder3 and when viewing photos and other video not imported through the deck, the color is great.. .It is NOT a problem with the Deck because the SAME thing happens with a friends Deck. I am just using the standard Firewire import on the ASUS Motherboard, although I do have a Blackmagic Studio2 card. This does not really come into it during firewire import....
As I said, now that I realized, this has been happening for 2 years or more. I was always color correcting the camera mans footage thinking his whitebalance was out, but after now attaching an external monitor to the Deck whilst firewire import, I notice the color is fine on the monitor. I am in PAL land Australia, but it happens with NTSC footage as well...
Anyone ever experienced this or know of this issue????
Any advice would be greatly appreciated...
    Thanks Tony.

The footage is mainly from the same camera, although occasionally I edit two camera shoots so the other camera is a different model, but this also has a different colour balance after imported.. I have used two identical Sony decks, and my latest acquirsition is a Sony HDV Deck that will natuarally play both. I get the same results from all three decks.
Yes I have rendered footage with no correction or effects and watched it back on a Sony TV/Monitor. Colour is out.
I suppose the tinge looks exactly like an incorrect colour temperature setting, but i know it is correct because when I playback the deck directly into a TV through composite it is fine. Example Warm tone Beige Curtains in a Reception Center look like they have a bad green Cast. Skin tones are no where near natural, again a green cast. I am not sure what is going on..
But yes, it has been there for a couple of years and it just hit me like a tone of bricks after getting this new deck. On previous decks, I never had a monitor connected to the composite and only monitored through the firewire so I always assumed the colour white balance on the cameramans camera is out. WHen I set this deck up, I put a montior on the composite. Yesterday as I was importing source footage, I glanced over and it amazed me to see that the composite monitor on the deck had beautiful rich acurate colour on it, whilst what was coming in on the pc screen, even after playing it back on the TV/Monitor, was horrible.
So I thought, Hell all these years I have been spending hours colour correcting footage that was ok to start with but lost somting in the transfer?? HOW?? I haven't got a clue.. It really doesnt make sence and I am still trying different experiments. I am now going to import through the component and svideo outputs of the deck, to see what results I get... I will post that later.. Thank you all.

  • AVI video not importing correctly

My codecs just got messed up today when I was trying something out and so I had to download new ones. When I try to import .avi files now, the footage, during certain times, has some issues. (It's hard to describe) I wouldn't just say it's pixelated, but large pixels are distorted showing other colors, in the shape of some objects in the video. It does this every few seconds. The video is compressed, too. Even after I render the movie, it still does this. The playback speed is normal, it's just these pixels that keep destroying the footag. It's almost as if the program is not conforming the video correctly when I am importing it, and it's corrupting the video. What do I need to do to fix this? Additional codec(s)? I used to be able to import .avi movies with no problem. This is really bugging me. Thanks!

If you look at the CODEC, it is Xvid, the opensource version of DivX, just as I suspected. These will almost never work in PrE. The best workflow is to go to before the Xvid compression (these are heavily compressed, loosing a ton of data and quality), or to convert them to DV-AVI Type II files with 48KHz 16-bit PCM/WAV Audio. I use DigitalMedia Converter, but it is shareware. Many users sing the praises of the free Prism to do the conversions. I have never used it, but many here have, and give it very high marks.
Note: no conversion program can ever reclaim that lost data and quality. It is lost and gone forever. That is why my first option was to go back to before that compression was applied. However, conversion will yield files that can be edited with both Video and Audio.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
[Edit] not sure why/how they were working before. Usually, with either the Xvid, or DivX CODEC's, one will get a Cannot Import error, or will get either Audio, or Video only. I have never been able to edit any Xvid, or DivX files, in either PrE, or PrPro - never even once. I just convert, if the client cannot get original source files, and I even have a quality loss diagram to show them how the footage will look - not very good, IMHO. I make them sign-off on that quality loss, before I start.

  • A video clip import for a new project keeps showing up as a clip from an older project.

So here's the issue, I succesfully imported and trimmed 95% of the video clips from my GoPro today. However, when I upload the piece de resistance, it shows up as a clip from an older project that I've already deleted. Despite showing me the older clip in the imported section, I can still play approximately 1/3 of the actual, new clip. Problem is it stops and doesn't allow me to work with the remaining footage. I've tried importing it straight from the SD card, copying it to the desktop first, etc. No luck. Any advice?

    So, it's Photoshop CS3.
Anyway, from what I understood, you open the photo directly form the disk in Photoshop. That is, you don't use Lightroom to open the photo in Photoshop. It just doesn't work this way. As I said above, Lightroom has no way of knowing when to import a photo that has been saved in Photoshop.
If you insist on using Jpegs for derivative files, your best way to go is indeed using Synchronize.
However, I'd advice to use a lossless format, like TIFF or PSD. Why leave image quality on the table (as Jeff Schewe likes to say)? Storage is cheap and you're editing only your best photos in Photoshop anyway.
And as an additional benefit, you can automate the process of importing derivatives:
Configure what file type to use in Prefs: TIFF or PSD, bit depth, color space etc.
Select an image in Lightroom and hit Ctrl+E.
The derivative file is created in the chosen format and opened in Photoshop.
    Edit and save in Photoshop.
Voila! Your edited derivative is already in Lightroom.

  • Error During Import: File Could Not Be Imported

I am trying to load some .AVI movies from my digital camera into iMovie; most of them will, but 1 or 2 for some reason will not. I have played some of these videos on my old G3, which I replaced with this new computer; most loaded in OK.
The clips that won't load look smaller than the others when playing (don't know why). I played the movies and converted them to Quicktime again in MPEG Streamclip and they played fine (also in VLC PLayer, FWIW).
I am getting this error message: Error during Import: File Could Not Be Imported.
Also, I am trying to change the orientation of one clip that I inadvertently shot sideways; I did this in Bitlist but it won't load now into iMovie. Is there away to change the orientation in Quicktime (I'm not buying QT pro) or another free converter that will work?
    Thanks in advance...

    try to ...
    * open the avi/mpegs in Streamclip
    * choose 'DV stream' as export option
    * in the 'DV stream' dialog, you're offered the option 'turn'.. rotate in the wanted direction and choose '75%' size to get all into the video...
