Colors are appearing washed out when saving from Illustrator to PDF

Hey Guys,
I am working on a cover page for my office to go along with our bid packages. I have finished adding all of the elements that they wanted and added a little flare to it. Its a really basic document and when I save it into a PDF form, the colors appear washed out or like the PDF adds a lot of white. the Rich black appear gray, the red appears pinkish... and the blue is much lighter than it looks in AI.
I need this to be completed soon, and I have been having this problem for a while now. Im not sure if its just the way it looks on the screen, or if it will print like that. I am a self taught Adobe guy.. So I am a little confused as to how to make this all work
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!
Steve

Steve,
What the PDF ultimately looks like depends on the settings when you create it. If you open it in Reader, it may be somewhat off, but in Acrobat it should look right (if your colour management settings are the same as in Illy).
A rich black may be customized to match the artwork in question (such as no C if there is no C in the artwork), or you may have some of each, often with emphasis on C and maybe M; there may be different views on what a rich black should hold.

    Just installed mountain Lion. Viewing a pdf sent to me using preview and some colors are appearing BLACK, however when I view the same PDF in Acrobat they are perfect and what they are suppose to be. WHY would PREVIEW showing a different color?

    Here's what I've found on the issue:
    Pantone color definitions have changed (coinciding with CS6) — they are now "Pantone+" (I think that's what they're called). The "+" apparently means they're now LAB colors. Lab colors are not properly displayed in Preview (or in Finder previews) — they display as black (as far as I can tell, in all circumstances). I'm sure it's a tad more complicated than that, but that's the gist.
    Now the bad news — nobody seems to know anything about a fix or workaround (unless you convert your PDFs to process — this might be a fix for sending to clients). It causes issues for me in AI files — being able to view them in the finder (with previews) is a HUGE time saver for my workflow... when they're all black, not so much.
    In my chat with a director of product dev at Adobe, they placed the responsibility to fix on Apple (assuming Apple wants to support Pantone color definitions in their OS).

  • I have installed a new Century Link Modem/Router...Firefox is loading fast, but some sentences & groupings of words are appearing washed out, blurry, unclear

    When reading web pages...many lines are unclear, not sharp...they are appearing washed out. We just replaced our older Century Link modem/router with their newer version [PK5001A]. When I run the cursor over the bad looking type...it usually sharpens up, though the effect created is very woozy feeling to your eyes. Why is this flaky looking type occurring and what can we do about it?

    Is the problem with some web sites? Most? All?

  • PDFs washed out when exported from Indesign

    I have a grayscale picture on a B&W background. Looks great in Indesign, but when exported to PDF the blacks are washed out. I have tried it several times.
    I am using Indesign CS, exporting to Acrobat 5, print, on compression I have chosen 'do not downsample' on all.
    When exporting simply to screen, it looks fine and the blacks are rich. When exported with the press settings, the black becomes a dark gray.
    Help? thx

    There are a few things to consider about the way ID handles grayscale images.
    ID does not have a grayscale color spacethere's only CMYK, RGB, or Lab. The display of Black (which is CMYK 0|0|0|100 because there is no grayscale space), varies depending on the document's CMYK profile. Modern profiles never display 0|0|0|100 as absolute black because that's not what happens on pressoffset blacks are not very black. Absolute black is reserved for rich black combinations, i.e. 65|50|50|100. If you change profiles from a coated to an uncoated profile you will see that uncoated profile previews Black as an even lighter value, which again is what will happen on a press printing on an uncoated sheet.
    Things get more complicated when you place a grayscale image. ID displays it differently depending on whether you have Overprint/Separation previews turned on or off. With Separation preview on, the grayscale previews as if it's on the black plate of CMYK (dark gray). With Separation preview off the grayscale previews at 2.2 gamma and the 100% black is not limited.
    When you export a press quality PDF with a grayscale and black objects you get a CMYK PDF with everything on the black plate, so Acrobat's display of the CMYK file is again dependent on the CMYK profile in Acrobat (black is gray)
    Legacy CMYK profiles display 0|0|0|100 as absolute black, so try setting your Color Settings in both ID and Acrobat to Photoshop 5 Default Spaces, which will give you an absolute black preview in both programs.

  • Mysterious lines and gradient when printing from Illustrator or pdf on PC and MAC

    First of all I have to admit I'm not a big computer brainiac but this issue keeps on reoccurring no matter what computer I use. When creating files/layouts in Illustrator and either saving them to pdf and then printing or printing directly from Illustrator either from a PC or from Mac (I use both) the print outs come out with mysterious lines and gradient not matter what colour is used. The lines occur on solid colour prints, when gradient or transparency are not used and when they are used as well. Any ideas suggestions how to make them go away?

    Monica,
    Here's an image of a print out that was meant to be a solid black colour. This happens with other colours as well not just with black.

  • Why do my images appear washed out when I use Save for Web?

    Q: The color/brightness/tone of my image changes when I use
    Save for Web. Why?
    A: Photoshop is a color-managed application. The Web is not. Normally, when you view an image in
    Save for Web or
    ImageReady you are viewing it without color management and see it how it will appear when uploaded to the Web.
    To minimize changes, Convert your image to sRGB (i.e from
    Edit menu choose
    Convert to Profile )before using
    Save for Web. You should also make sure that
    Save for Web has been configured so that images are displayed using the document color profile (see attached screenshot for guidance).
    You should also ensure that your monitor properly calibrated and the gamma is set to 2.2.

    Same here. Didn't get any good New Years Eve photos indoors.

  • SVG is being resized when saved from Illustrator CC

    Hello All!
    I am encountering an issue that has arose since the latest update for Illustrator CC (64-bit). When I come to save a file as an SVG (from my original AI file) the artboard's proportions change, and the size of the SVG changes. I am using Windows 7.
    Any suggestions as to what's going wrong would be welcome!
    Thanks!

    Hi rcbmoose
    Yes, I too am saving out from an original AI file.
    I've located the issue within the SVG code.
    The file should be defaulted to 30x30px, but when the SVG is opened, the image fills the parent space. Here's the SVG code for the problem file:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
    <!-- Generator: Adobe Illustrator 17.1.0, SVG Export Plug-In . SVG Version: 6.00 Build 0)  -->
    <!DOCTYPE svg PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD SVG 1.1//EN" "http://www.w3.org/Graphics/SVG/1.1/DTD/svg11.dtd">
    <svg version="1.1" id="Main_Window" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" x="0px" y="0px" viewBox="0 0 30 30" enable-background="new 0 0 30 30" xml:space="preserve">
    <rect fill-rule="evenodd" clip-rule="evenodd" fill="#E8E8E8" width="30" height="30"/>
    <path id="tst_x5F_eml_x5F_scss_x5F_win" fill-rule="evenodd" clip-rule="evenodd" fill="#3D3D3D" d="M26,9.625L15.261,20.375l0,0    l-2.759,2.762l-2.759-2.762l0,0L4,14.627l2.759-2.762l5.742,5.748L23.241,6.864L26,9.625z"/>
    </svg>
    I've found a temporary work around. Here's the file sized correcly:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
    <!-- Generator: Adobe Illustrator 17.1.0, SVG Export Plug-In . SVG Version: 6.00 Build 0)  -->
    <!DOCTYPE svg PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD SVG 1.1//EN" "http://www.w3.org/Graphics/SVG/1.1/DTD/svg11.dtd">
    <svg version="1.1" id="Main_Window" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" x="0px" y="0px" width="30" height="30" viewBox="0 0 30 30" enable-background="new 0 0 30 30" xml:space="preserve">
    <rect fill-rule="evenodd" clip-rule="evenodd" fill="#E8E8E8" width="30" height="30"/>
    <path id="tst_x5F_eml_x5F_scss_x5F_win" fill-rule="evenodd" clip-rule="evenodd" fill="#3D3D3D" d="M26,9.625L15.261,20.375l0,0    l-2.759,2.762l-2.759-2.762l0,0L4,14.627l2.759-2.762l5.742,5.748L23.241,6.864L26,9.625z"/>
    </svg>
    The width and height values are missing from the first svg tag (highlighted in code above). You can save your SVG file, and then add these values into the tag yourself via a text editor (i.e. Notepad if you're using windows, or the equivalent on MAC)
    This works, but it's not right that we have to do this. This wasn't nessessary before the latest update.
    Hope this helps.

  • Page numbers are not generated correctly when print from Word to PDF

    Whenever I print my Word document to PDF, my page numbers do not reflect the page numbers shown in Print Preview.
    For example, I have a Word document with 10 pages and after generating it as PDF, the page number shows Page 1 of 1; Page 2 of 2; Page 3 of 3; ......Page 10 of 10.
    Please advise what may be the cause and how can I rectify this problem?
    Thank you.

    Thank you for your reply.
    I do have some sections breaks on the pages, however the pages are all shown in running sequence even on Preview page.
    It is the final generated document that has this problem.
    I emailed my colleagues my WORD document and ask them to generate to PDF and they have no issues printing the WORD to PDF and every pages were in running order.
    Any other advise?

  • QTs are washed out when rendered.

    HI there
    I'm rendering out through AE (v12) and through numerous codecs - animation,H264, ApplePro, tiffs, etc.... - and all QTs look washed out when compared to the AE project. Does anyone have a solution or know the cause of this? (OSX 10.8.4 & GeForce GT650M)
    Any help appreciated.
    E

    Tiffs and Targa sequences still seem to drop less so.
    When importing the rendered QTs back into AE they appear less washed out/desaturated within the viewer than they do with the QT player. Obviously one or the other is causing the main problem, but both seem to be playing a part.

  • Color space-creating a book in My publisher-.when I look at the share book pre print the colors are all dulled out. I work in pro photo rgb in LR and PS -.My Pub is sRGB-.where is the problem?

    Color space…creating a book in My publisher….when I look at the share book pre print the colors are all dulled out. I work in pro photo rgb in LR and PS ….My Pub is sRGB….where is the problem?

    I finally got to my references. This had to do with "soft proofing" on screen in Photoshop.
    So this may not help you at all. Re: Strange sRGB soft-proofing behavior  So go ahead and leave that setting at Basic.
    However there is a Color Management forum that you also go to and see if anyone has answers for your particular problem.
    Here is the link: Color management
    I hope they can help you out.

  • Monitor suddenly appears washed out

    We've got a Dual Processor PowerMac G4 (Mirrored Drive Doors) with both ADC and DVI ports, and recently the color has shifted dramatically such that all screen images appear washed out. We've run the hardware test, which completed succesfully. We swapped this Sony 17" CRT monitor with a Sony 15" CRT, with the same result. We even switched it from using the ADC adaptor to the DVI port using an adapter from a Mac Mini.
    When completing the onscreen calibration, the computer asks to increase the contrast to its maximum and then put the brightness to a level such that a circle/square combination is barely distinguishable. With the contrast up fully, the brightness won't go high enough to distinguish the circle/square... additionally, there are two light horizontal lines present onscreen, even when the display is inverted to white on black.
    Any help or insight into what components could be causing this would be greatly appreciated!

    Sounds like the video card in your machine might be going if it effects more than one monitor. If it were just one then it would be case of a bad monitor or since you swapped connecters, it could have been that. Your tests seem to point to a bad video card, or one that has been unseated. Check to make sure the video card is firmly inplace in the AGP or PCI slot. If that is not the problem then it may be as I suggested at the beginning of my comments.

  • Tables dropping out when saving PDF files

    I have saved a document through writing to PDF in the Print dialog and also by exporting as PDF, but with the same results. In a 40 page document 3 of the tables get dropped out when saving so all I get is blank space where they should be.
    Perhaps related is an interesting printing problem. When I print the entire document these same three tables are missing. But if I go back and print only the pages they appear on then the tables will print.
    Any suggestions?

    Happens with a Konika-Minolta Magicolor, a Brother 1470-N and an HP Laserjet.

    If you can hear the HD spin up, then it is, indeed, sleeping and it's got to wake up before it can get busy. In Energy Saver preferences, do you have Put HD to sleep when possible checked? Does this happen whether the target file is on the internal or external drives or only the external? And if it happens when the file is on the internal, does it happen if the external is disconnected or powered off? Finally, did either the enclosure or the HD come with software to control it and did you install it?
    I've seen a few brands of external drives spin down when they haven't been accessed for a while and that's sometimes built into the drive's firmware. Some manufacturers offer software to defeat that so you might check to see if WD does. But external enclosures aren't always ventilated properly so running the drive all the time could get it pretty hot (Seagate used to do that and required that spin down to keep from getting cooked).
