Colors change in objects in both RGB and CMYK formats

I've recently upgraded to CS6 and also to OS 10.8...  Im working in multiple Illustrator docs using a color of 100-87-32-32. When I change objects to that color by keying it in to the color pallete, it changes. If I click off, go away and come back the color shifts to 100-82-36-29 or something similar.
Some objects retain and others shift. What gives?

Are you in the corect color mode?
File >> Document Color Mode >> CMYK when working in print
File >> Document Color Mode >> RGB when working in web or digital
Be careful when you make new document, flip down advanced to change to the desired color mode.

  • Designing art for both RGB and CMYK

    I need to make some artwork that might be viewed in both RGB and printed with CMYK. I know I can switch the color mode after making the artwork, however, I'm concerned with color shifting when changing from RGB to CMYK or the other way around. How do you design something that you can both print and display on screen without compromising the colors?
    Thanks.

    Generally, is there much if any color shift when going from CMYK to RGB?
    Even if a given color is within the gamuts of both CMYK and RGB color spaces, that does not necessarily mean that color shifts will not occur.
    You can't think of the RGB and CMYK versions of "a color" as "equivalents." There is not just one set of CMYK values for a given set of RGB values. A simple way to think about it is this: Take the product of three numbers. Now divide that number into four factors. Obviously, there is more than just one set of four values possible.
    So switching back and forth between RGB and CMYK color spaces in willy-nilly fashon is not good practice. The software has to make a translation decision out of many possibilities. It does it according to your so-called "color management" settings. Even then, the software does not keep a breadcrumb trail of all of your switches back and forth. So colors can still drift.
    Design for print first. Then repurpose for web. Color is not the only reason for this.

  • Why does Illustrator automatically change RGB and CMYK values

    Hi, I am struggling to understand why Illustrator is changing the values inside the RGB and CMYK boxes. I am also not sure of the exact relationship between these values. Essentially, it appears that if you set the Document Color Mode to RGB, it leaves the RGB values that you type in alone. If you set the Document Color Mode to CMYK, it leaves the CMYK values alone.
    But as soon as you change the Color Mode, it automatically modifies the values. So if you were in RGB mode and you set some RGB values, it changes those RGB values when you switch to CMYK mode. And vice versa.
    I had thought that the CMYK palette was a subset of the RGB palette. It would make sense to me if it did this when I switched from RGB to CMYK mode, but it doesn't make sense to me why it does this when I switch from CMYK to RGB mode.
    The other thing I am confused about is the relationship of the values in the RGB boxes to the values in the CMYK boxes. I would have thought that the relationship between them would be static. Actually, it is not. When I am in CMYK mode and I enter a CMYK value of 90 16 0 0, the RGB values become 0 158 222. But when I switch over to RGB mode, the RGB values of 0 158 222 result in CMYK values of 75 23 0 0.
    Very confusing.
    Thanks in advance if you can explain this behavior!

    Color management.
    An Ai document can be either RGB or CMYK. The colors follow the document color mode and thus are converted immediately if they don't match.
    But as soon as you change the Color Mode, it automatically modifies the values. So if you were in RGB mode and you set some RGB values, it changes those RGB values when you switch to CMYK mode. And vice versa.
    Same reason.
    I had thought that the CMYK palette was a subset of the RGB palette. It would make sense to me if it did this when I switched from RGB to CMYK mode, but it doesn't make sense to me why it does this when I switch from CMYK to RGB mode.
    It's not. CMYK color spaces (there are more than just one) are normally smaller than RGB color spaces, but they aren't a "subset".
    When Illustrator converts the colors, it uses color management: the profiles you set up and the methods you set up. After converting it forgets the color that used to be. When converting "back", it uses color management again.
    When you convert an very bright RGB color, it be out of the CMYK gamut. So it get's converted to the closest possbile CMYK color (which might still be far away from the original color. But it's not possible to convert it "back" to the bright one unless you just revert the conversion (by Cmd/Ctrl + Z).

  • Adding color to an object in a black and white photo

    Can someone please help? I just bought Aperture and I was wondering if it is possible to add color to an object in a black and white photo? or keep an object in color and turn the rest of the picture into black and white?
    Thanks

    Hi
    I am 90% sure this cannot be specifically done in Aperture as it can in Photoshop.
    I assume you mean adding spot colour to a B&W photograph.
    You can choose an external editor such as Photoshop, if you have it, create the effect, and re-import the image back into Aperture.
    There are some powerful colour controls for selectively improving colour in a photo within Aperture. Whereby you can make a particular colour stand out more by selectively adjusting the red, blue,cyan,magenta, yellow colour's. These are accessed via the colour controls in the adjustments inspector.
    You can create B&W images with two tones (of your choice) by using the Monochrome mixer ( in the adjustments panel )
    Or you can create colour monochrome effects by using the colour monochrome effects slider ( in the adjustments panel, where you see a + sign with a downward pointing arrow ) click the arrow and select "colour monochrome" from the menu, it will appear at the bottom of the adjustments panel.
    Give some of these a go..... play around with it, you can get some stunning result's..........
    Hope this helps some.......

  • How to select matching RGB and CMYK colors

    Starting from scratch for a client, how do I select matching RGB and CMYK pairs?
    Say we find a nice red colour in RGB for screen use, how do I then find the correct CMYK for print? And what assumptions do I have to make when doing this, if any?
    Would it be the same for the other way around (choose CMYK first for print and then find the RGB equivalent)
    Is it more sensible to start with a Pantone colour and then find the RGB and CMYK equivalents for that?
    Many thanks
    RobbieG
    (I'm working with Ai, Ps and Id CS6)

    Yes.  Better to start with Pantone reference books where you are viewing the color in a reflective environment.  As already mentioned, color on the monitor can be deceptive.  And, I think the others are basiclt saying that you should have everything calibrated and use color management policies in your apps.  There is a way to find CMYK equivalents using Photoshop's color palette.  Let's say you have an RGB Red as the foreground color in Photoshop.  If you double click on the swatch you will get Photoshop's color palette which lists the RGB percentages, CMYK percentages, LAB percentages, and HEX web color for that Red.  You can go further and select "Custom" and the Pasntone Spot color palette opens and gives you the closest Spot color value for that Red.  This however, depends on your color settings.  That's why I recommend you start with the Pantone swatch book and get the perecentages of CMYK from their formula guide which is set to industry standard color.

  • Why do the relative values of RGB and CMYK change when switching between Photoshop and InDesign?

    I'm trying to put together a Colour Guide for my company's brand guidelines.
    I initially worked from InDesign and wrote down all the H, RGB, and CMYK values that I got when I eye-dropped my original colour palette.
    However when I put the same RGB values into Photoshop- I am given a (slightly) different set of CMYK numbers from those that I had originally documented in InDesign.
    Why is this???

    Jamie,
    in Photoshop go to Edit > Color Settings and choose your  parameters:
    For RGB: sRGB or AdobeRGB (1998)
    For CMYK: the process as recommended by your printer (person, company)
    For offset printing this is here ISOCoated-v2-eci and elsewhere for instance SWOP.
    For digital printing you should ask the company as well.
    For Grayscale: Gray Gamma 2.2
    For Spot: probably irrelevant in the moment. Dot Gain 20%
    Everything as shown here:
    For your application I've modified my settings a little, therefore we can see top left 'unsynchronized'.
    In InDesign do practically the same, but there are no settings for Grayscale.
    You'll find for any topic explanations if you move to by mouse (position the pointer over ...).
    The field 'Settings' shows not 'Custom' but the file name of a configuration which had been previously saved
    and then loaded (buttons top right).
    Further explanations on request. It would be quite useless to explain everything now at the same time.
    The colors will be wrong if the settings are not synchronized. Above they are explicitly synchronized.
    Because Bridge was not used, the system considers them as 'not synchronized', which doesn't matter.

  • How to spin an object with both x and z-rotation in M3G?

    I want to spin an object with both x and z-rotation in M3G. I get a good result when I implement this in OpenGL, but the combined rotation doesn't get right when I try to do this in M3G. The x rotation and the z rotation looks like they should when I only use one of them. This is achieved by adding only spinAnimationTrack or rotationAnimationTrack. The problem is that the rotation gets messed up when I add both spinAnimationTrack and rotationAnimationTrack. What am I doing wrong? This is my code:
    KeyframeSequence spinKeyframes =
    new KeyframeSequence(3, 4, KeyframeSequence.SLERP);
    spinKeyframes.setRepeatMode(KeyframeSequence.LOOP);
    spinKeyframes.setDuration(4000);
    spinKeyframes.setKeyframe(0, 0,
    getRotationQuaternion(-50.0f, new float[]{1.0f, 0.0f, 0.0f}));
    spinKeyframes.setKeyframe(1, 2000,
    getRotationQuaternion(50.0f, new float[]{1.0f, 0.0f, 0.0f}));
    spinKeyframes.setKeyframe(2, 4000,
    getRotationQuaternion(-50.0f, new float[]{1.0f, 0.0f, 0.0f}));
    AnimationTrack spinAnimationTrack =
    new AnimationTrack(spinKeyframes,
    AnimationTrack.ORIENTATION);
    AnimationController animatorS = new AnimationController();
    spinAnimationTrack.setController(animatorS);
    animatorS.setSpeed(0.4f * speed, 0);
    KeyframeSequence rotationKeyframes =
    new KeyframeSequence(2, 4, KeyframeSequence.SLERP);
    rotationKeyframes.setRepeatMode(KeyframeSequence.LOOP);
    rotationKeyframes.setDuration(4000);
    rotationKeyframes.setKeyframe(0, 0,
    getRotationQuaternion(359.0f, new float[]{0.0f, 0.0f, 1.0f}));
    rotationKeyframes.setKeyframe(1, 4000,
    getRotationQuaternion(0.0f, new float[]{0.0f, 0.0f, 1.0f}));
    AnimationTrack rotationAnimationTrack1 =
    new AnimationTrack(rotationKeyframes,
    AnimationTrack.ORIENTATION);
    rotationAnimationTrack1.setController(animatorR1);
    animatorR1.setSpeed(0.4f * speed, 0);
    mesh1.addAnimationTrack(spinAnimationTrack);
    mesh1.addAnimationTrack(rotationAnimationTrack1);

    People often make this harder than it is. It's usually not necessary to using clipping paths or to make cuts confined to the areas of overlap to make objects appear to intertwine. Usually, you can simply cut where objects do not overlap. There are no masks, clipping paths, pathfinders, etc., involved in this knot:
    Your specific situation may be somewhat complicated by the use of drop shadows, depending on the specific parameters.

  • Is Cleartype able to support both RGB and BGR sub pixel panel displays at the same time?

    Hi,
    I am using 2 27' LED displays on my PC. One has RGB sub pixel, the other has BGR sub pixel.
    I have problem to tune the font using Cleartype. I have tried to tune all displays a few times and always get the following result.
    If I use the RGB one as the primary display, the font on the RGB display looks ok but the font on the BGR display looks weird after tuning using cleartype.
    If I use the BGR display as the primary, the font on the BGR display looks ok but the font on the RGB display looks weird after tuning using cleartype.
    Basicly, the after tuning with Cleartype, the font on the Primary display looks good but on the other looks weird.
    I have also tested with single display setup. i.e. connect only the RGB sub pixel display or the
    BGR sub pixel display.
    ClearType tuning works well for single display setup no matter which display I have connected.
    But once I connect the 2nd display and tune using Cleartype, the font on the Primary display looks good but on the other looks weird. (The same as above)
    To be more specific, the RGB display is Philips 278C4 (connect using HDMI), the BGR display is Dell P2714H (connect using DisplayPort. I have also tried DVI. DisplayPort or DVI give same result).
    My system is Win 8.1 Pro x64 JA-JP with all latest patches installed, and my graphic card is nVidia GTX 760, with the latest driver installed.
    I suspect this is due to one display has RGB sub pixel panel, and the other has BGR sub pixel panel, which means
    Windows ClearType need to take care both RGB and BGR for at the same time. I am not sure if this is fully supported by Windows 8.1 ClearType.
    Is there any solution or workaround to make the font on both displays looks nice?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
    Windows includes several technologies to render text on the screen. These include Windows GDI, Direct Write and Windows Presentation Foundation.
    Windows GDI is limited to using one set of ClearType settings per system
    while the other two support different settings per display.
    It depends. Most LCD screens have a RGB striping order. A very small number have a striping order of BGR.

    In several days (in the 19th) i will lecture at
    SQLSaturday #360 and my last demo (hopefully I will have the time) is
    Full implementation of JSON, I will show several function using JSON serializer and deserializer, and as mentioned full implementation including fast
    indexes on JSON column (finding specific Node in 10 million rows
    in less then a second). If you want to wait, then I will publish it latter probably, or you can come the lecture if you want :-)
    * I am using Json.NET framework, by the way.
    regarding your question, all you need is to find a nice serializer/deserializer framework (you can use
    Json.NET framework) in order to do what you are looking for (if I understand what you asked)

  • Rescuing shots from a graded Color seq with shots on both V1 and V2

    Hi guys
    I could have sworn I watched a Lynda tutorial that showed it was okay to use both V1 and V2 before sending to Color 2.0.2. On forums since I have now realised that only V1 is really the only way.
    Anyway, since sending back to FCP I have some shots which have flashed, ungraded, weird-looking frames of the beginning of each of the faulty shots. i tried 'send to FCP' a few times but still get the wonky-weird frames at the beginning of each of the shots.
    I brought the original shots into a new FCP seq, sent to Color, graded them, then rendered (no signs of weirdness) and sent back to FCP. However, when I tried to incorporate the same shots into the main previously graded sequence the weird fault appears again on the freshly, individually-all-graded-using-only-V1 shots.
    What can I do please to get rid of the weird flash?
    Thanks in advance!
    Peter

    That could be it JP - a bug in the handles.
    Could you reread my previous post - I had edited it to include an extra paragraph at the end and reposted just as you did your most recent post please.
    The extra bit I did is a description of how the problem appears to remain regardless of handles, but I'm hoping it will go away if I rerender all the shots without handles?
    I'm rerendering all my shots with handles set to 0 right now. Fingers crossed!
    Just to update:
    I have changed my handles to 0 and am all set to re-render. However, I notice the weird flash remains at the beginning of some shots...let me describe...
    In the COLOR timeline if I use the down arrow to move to a shot. Once on this shot, if I press the left arrow once I move back one frame and I see the weird warped image (either too high contrast or some other funkiness). Weird thing is, despite the contents of this frame belonging entirely to the shot I originally 'down-arrowed' to...the previous shot becomes selected?!

  • Eyedropper tool RGB and CMYK help!

    When I try and sample a color from a graphic imported with the eyedropper tool, it automatically creates the swatch as RGB.  The imported graphic is CMYK and the document color mode is CMYK.  The InDesign file is set for Print.
    Please help.  I hate having to select a swatch and then have to change it to CMYK every time!

    For placed ai and pdf files the preview proxy is always RGB so the eyedropper gets RGB values. With image files the eyedropper will return the actual pixel color. If you are trying to get an exact match to the placed vector file's CMYK values, converting the proxy RGB values to CMYK won't work because the color will be a color managed conversion from RGB to CMYK.

  • Reconciling changes to item in both Outlook and iPod Touch

    I accidentally changed a Note/Memo in both the Outlook and iPod Touch. When I sync (sunc?), iTunes shows me a window with the Outlook version of the note/memo on one half, and the iPod Touch version on the other half. However, I haven't found a way to save both as notes/memos, nor have I been able to select the text in the two versions. This means that I can't dump the two versions into two files and bring difference-identifying tools to bear e.g. Word's file comparison or Vim's differencing function. Is there a way to have both versions of the note/memo saved, or the select the text from both versions for copying and pasting?

    Yes, you can. I sync an iPhone and an iPod Touch to the same computer without problems.
    I sync by selected playlists to make it easier to select which content goes on which device.
    I would suggest creating separate groups in your Address Book for your contacts and her contacts, so each can have his or her own list.
