Colors in FreeHand

When I opened a Freehand document, the color mixer went to
all zero amounts but the area below the four color slides became a
magenta-like color (with all the values at zero, this color should
be white). Also all the colors in the color list then became shades
of magenta. When I slide the values to the right, they all remain
shades of magenta.
Any suggestions on what to do?

This happens sometimes in Windows. I don't know what actually
causes it but it has something to do with color management.
In XP it my be fixed by
- Removing incompatibe icc profiles from the system. (by
guessing)
- Deleting FreeHand preference files (make a backup copy
first)
In Vista by
- Replacing very old kodak dll-files with newer ones. (can be
found with Google search)
In my Vista computer the colors were like that from the
start. Replacing dll files fixed the problem.

  • Color correction for newsprint

Anybody out there know of a slick quick way to adjust color, in Freehand 10, for graphics eps files ultimately being printed on newsprint?
My graphics and illustrations always seem to be washed out, as if all the colors need to be maybe 20% darker. The graphic looks great on the monitor screen. Help!

do you work with this press regularly? would make sense to calibrate your Freehand to this printer.
One silly but quick way is to select colours in question and go to Xtras-> Colors -> Darken Colors.
(and yes, ALL your colours for print should be CMYK)

    Claudio,
You are correct, but it is a weird question. Since Freehand doesn’t operate on an iPad.

  • Put freehand options in to Illustrator

I am a Freehand user that also uses Illustrator. Now it is
official that Adobe will not develop Freehand. We will all have to
start using Illustrator exclusively. There are some tools that are
much better with Freehand such as paste inside and punch. Also it
is much easier to work with text, for example you can resize a text
box and it will change the "Leading". It is also better to work
with pantone colors because you can make tint of pantone colors in
    Freehand.
I think Illustrator would improve alot if these features were
    implemented.
My question is, could you add some of these features to
    Illustrator?

Click any selected object and Illustrator will align objets
to that object. Way better than FreeHand. Also distributing is far
    better.
    > 4) snap to guides SUCKS in illustrator - incredibly

True but 'smart snap' is very good.
    > 5) paste inside is way better than illustrator's "masks"

Try layer masks, they are great as well as opacity masks.

No, every object should keep rotation data until reset,
    especially images.
    > 7) scaling objects is so much better in freehand!
Different, not better. For example scaling with transform
palette is great, just type for example 50% (or a new value) into
    with field and hit Enter.
    > 8) color pallet much more user friendly
Exactly but color sets in CS3 is good improvement.

There are a lot of good features in Illustrator. In fact I

  • Freehand drawing

How do I change the weight and color in freehand?

After you've drawn the line and tapped "save" to save the shape, you will be sent back to the scrolling document view. You can now tap the freehand drawing to select it, and a context menu will pop up that includes options to change the line weight, color, and opacity.

  • Choosing a certain color

I'm finding it difficult to duplicate a particular color in
Freehand. I'm working with index numbers ie - #009999 which is a
blue, #33FF99 which is a mint, and #FFFF33 which is a yellow.
Is there any way I can use those numbers which I used in
Flash, to use in Freehand. Sorry - must be a way and I'm not
    finding it.

Web Safe colors are available in swatches palette.
You can't define colors using hex numbers in FreeHand but
since they are just rgb colors it is fairly easy to covert them
    into integer values. 00=000, 33=051, 66=102, 99=153, EE=204,
FF=255. FreeHand should have at least slider snap at
    00-51-102-204-255, though.
Note that using web safe colors is not necessary today
because there are not too many users with 256 color display. Rgb
values can be used in html and css too. The color palette in Flash
is somewhat outdated I think. However, if a color is very critial
it is best to check in which web safe 'slot' it falls into. This
can be done easily with Fireworks or Photoshop by converting the
    color into websafe palette.

  • CMYK values change between FH and Photoshop

    Hi,
I'm trying to recreate a logo in FreeHand MX11 from one done
in Photoshop CS2 that's composed of PMS colors. Unfortunately, the
original artist didn't leave notes as to which PMS colors she used,
but when I sample a color in P'shop, I get a PMS color (286 PC
C100/M66/Y0/K2) that's a near match. Trouble is, when I assign that
same color in FreeHand, even though the color has the same CMYK
values, it looks much darker and not the same color at all. When I
copy and paste the image from FH into Photoshop and sample it, its
    values change to C100/M86/Y23/K9.
I'm confused, how can both apps have so much variation in
displaying PMS colors? Is there a color management setting I need
    to fix?
    Thanks for any assistance,
    Chris

    >
    > What are your color management settings is FH? Are you
on a PC or a Mac? Are
    > you using ColorSync?
The reason is most likely color management in FreeHand. Note
that there is a checkbox 'Color manage spot colors' in
Preferences/Colors. It should be checked, of course. Photoshop and
FreeHand use slightly different RGB color values for Pantone Spot
colors. The difference is very small, though.
Don't rely on screen color but check the colors from Patone
booklet because that's what the printer will do. Unlike cmyk colors
onscreen color management is not that crucial, although it is much
nicer to work if is set just right.
Also note that not single Pantone Spot color can be reprouced
with cmyk colors. Espeicially greens, orages and violets will
change significantly. Pantone Spot to CMYK chart is a very useful
tool, included in the 'Panton Survival Kit'.

  • Find and Replace Shape

I'm a cartographer and converted from FreeHand to Illustrator several years ago. One thing I seriously need is the ability to take a shape and convert it to another shape. i.e I have several circles at a certain size and color and I need to change all of those symbols to a diamond of a different size and color. FreeHand had a Find and Replace Graphic option where I could copy in the original graphic and copy in what I wanted the graphic to change to. Then I would go and select all the original graphics, hit replace and it would change everything WITHOUT moving the shapes as a whole.
This also relates to the ability to scale of a bunch of circles in one fell swoop without having to go to each individual cirlce and scaling each.
Does Illustrator have the ability to do either of the things I just described? I have been searching the forums and can't seem to find an answer. This would help me (and I would bet thousands of other cartographers who have to export data out of ArcMap for stylization!)
    Thank you!

Aha, I guess using the right word in help would be good! I've tried shape, vector, graphic, etc., but not symbol! Thank you to you all. I will try this.
One other question...when I bring documents in from FreeHand, all of the text boxes are permanently sized. Is it possible to convert all text boxes to auto expand at one time?
    Much thanks!

  • FreeHand 11 Colors picker error on launch in Snow Leopard

I hava new 27 inch imac running Snow leopard 10.6.2. I got FreeHand 11 running great for the last two weeks. I always got an error on launch saying " Colors picker error. " Invalid color file. I click OK and it worked anyways. Today FreeHand launches and then quits when I click OK on the error. I reinstalled freeHand with no luck. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Reinstalling FreeHand does not overwrite the Preferences or Settings files with new copies. If the problem is a corrupt file in that folder, you will have to remove it.
I suggest you make a backup copy of your Settings folder and then delete the original folder. FH will write a new Settings folder when it launches. If the problem is in the settings folder, then FH will launch.
    The Setting folder is here:
    Users/[Username]/Library/Application Support/ Macromedia/ FreeHand MX/ 11/ English/ Settings
Were you using ColorSync profiles as part of your color management settings? A corrupt ICC color profile could be causing the problem. Have you created any new profiles or installed software that adds profiles? If you search your hard drive for .icc with 'System Files are included', you'll see where .icc files are stored.

  • Printing pdfs from FreeHand 8 w/color fill patterns

When I export a freehand drawing with colored fill patterns to pdf using export or distiller, it looks correct in Acrobat 8 professional and reader, but it doesn't print the fill patterns in color. They come out black & white. I don't want to use a PS printer since most of the people I send the pdfs to don't have postscript. This didn't happen with earlier versions of Acrobat. Any ideas to fix this problem?

    Lauren,
This is best asked in the Freehand forum (if you want help with your
export) or the Acrobat forum. This forum is for problems with using
Reader, not in creating pdf files. When you repost, describe your
workflow explicitly together with settings for pdf export or print
settings and Distiller settings. Posting a sample pdf and freehand file
to illustrate the problem would help as well.

  • Process Color Tint: Illustrator versus Freehand

I'm a FreeHand user from the first hour and now I'm forced to start working with AI which gives me the creeps!
In FH it is very easy to create a "tint" of a spot or process color. in AI, I only manage to do so with spot colors and not with process colors. For example, I have an object filled with 100% process color from the Swatches panel. Now I can change its transparency to 50% but that's not what I want; I want it to be filled with 50% of that same process color. In FH that's a piece of a cake. And even so in ID! why not in AI?

You need to use Global Process swatches, which are essentially process colors that function as spots.
In the Swatches palette, in List View, you should see a grey square next to the color model square (in Thumbnail view you will see a white dog-eared lower right corner of the swatch with no dot (the dot denotes a Spot).
In the Color palette you can change the tint of your Global Process color just as you can with a Spot. If you want to make a Tint Swatch, set it to some value, say 40%, and click the New Swatch button at the bottom of the Swatches palette (second from the right at the bottom).
Now when you edit your base color, all the tints change along with it.
Note: this will not magically apply the color to your art. It is best done at the beginning or while you are working, NOT as an afterthought. If you have existing art you should probably look at Live Color to get you by.
PS: Sorry if I came off brusque, but it's disheartening how often people come in here immediately bashing AI. I personally hate Freehand (and I had to use it for a long time) but it has no relevance to these discussions. And I'm not saying it didn't have its good stuff, it did - I just never cared for it compared to AI.

  • Can I change freehand annotation line weight and color BEFORE creating the annotation?

I'm trying to sign documents and the default pen size is way too big. I can't make my signature small enough to go back and change the size after I write.

No.  You can only change the properties (Thickness, Color, etc.) of your signature AFTER creating it.
Once you've created your signature, you can
Tap the handwritten signature icon (the right-most icon) in the toolbar.
Tap where you want to add your signature. You will see the popup menu showing "Add Signature" and "Edit Saved Signature".
Tap Edit Saved Signature to edit it.  You can change the thickness or color of your signature here.
Additionally, when you tap a newly added signature, you will get a blue rectangle outline with four grabber circles like this.
You can drag one of the grabber to change the overall size of your signature as well.
