Colors in Mail 2.1

I often have trouble locating the message I am reading in the message header window, because the background color (grey) is not sufficiently different from that of the unselected messages in the header list.
Is there a way to choose a different kind of highlighting or background color for the selected message header?
G4 15 in Powerbook, G4 tower   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   Mail 2.1

The highlight color would be whatever you’ve chosen in System Preferences > Appearance if the message list pane has “focus”. It loses the color and appears gray if another pane (e.g. the preview pane) has the “focus”. Pressing the Tab key causes the “next” pane to gain focus. Pressing Shift+Tab causes the “previous” pane to gain focus.
Hence, if the preview pane is the one that has focus, as is usually the case, pressing Shift+Tab should cause the message list (which is the “previous” pane in that window) to gain focus and the selected message appear highlighted in whatever color you’ve chosen in System Preferences > Appearance.
I hope I’ve understood what you meant and what I said is somewhat clear.

I'm no expert in this area, but you can use HTML to create your signature.
There are several how-to guides on the internet.  Here's one of them:

how can i change the font and color in mail 5?

    Mail -> Preferences -> Fonts & Colors
If you want to change the font and color in a message you're composing, you can right-click on the message and use the Font/Show Fonts command to bring up the Font panel (among other ways).

  • How do I change the default font color on Mail?

I want the words in my messages to be a certain color, so what am I doing wrong? First I go on preferences, to fonts & colors, hit select on message list font, and it pulled up a window with all the fonts and stuff. Then I click on the color icon thing which brings up another window for me to choose the color. So I choose the color and close that window and all the other ones. But when I start a new message, the font is black. Is there something I need to do differently? Thanks!

Hello Apple... is anyone monitoring and responding?
For years I have been manually changing the font and font color on every outgoing mail as an element of Corporate Identity.
Apple Mail offers great features like smart mailboxes - but this is still not fixed!
Universal Mailer (http://universalmailer.github.io/UniversalMailer/) forces font, size and color, but does not display it in the window of the outgoing mail. Can be misleading!
Spoiling the ship for a ha'porth of tar!
    Apple, please fix!

  • How to change background color in mail messages?

Capacity to change background colours seems to have been removed.  Has anyone found where to do this please???

It's still available in Lion's version of Mail.
Open a New Message window in Mail. Then select Show Fonts from the Format menu.
In the Fonts screen, click the button for Document Color; a clor selection window will open. In that, choose the color you want for background.
Note - if you do this before entering any text in the New Message, you can save it as a Stationery item, which means you can select it from the Stationery menu in the future, saving many steps.

  • Can I create a keyboard shortcut for changing text colors in Mail?

When composing an email in Mail (v5.2), I often have the need to change the text of a few words to red to highlight them (e.g. names of people assigned to an action item) but want to do it via keyboard shortcut.  I know I can do the following:
Press Command-Shift-C brings up to Colors panel
Choose the color (e.g. Red) with my mouse
    Type the text
Choose the color (e.g. back to Black) with my mouse
    Continue typing text
And that's if I want the color panel to stay visible (add at least 3 more steps all together if I close it in the interim).
I've tried using keyboard shortcuts to assign a color (couldn't find the right menu path) and Automator to create a script (the color panel always has to be in the right location which it may not be). None of those techniques work.
It's an annoyance more than anything else but I imagine it should be possible.
    Thanks for any assistance!
    John

Not only is this very possible, it's also very easy. You can do this not just for Quark but for any application in OS X. To accomplish what you want, do the following:
    * Firstly, quit QuarkXPress completely. The rest of the steps won't work if it is still running.
    * Go to the Apple menu and select System Preferences.
    * Click the Keyboard & Mouse System Preference Pane
    * Click Keyboard Shortcuts
    * Click the + button to add a new shortcut.
    * Select QuarkXPress as the application.
    * In the Menu Title field type "Place Name" exactly like that but without the quotes.
    * Click inside the Shortcut field and type the key combination you want to use for this shortcut. I suggest using Command + one of the F keys, like Command+F1.
    * Click Add.
    * Close System Preferences
    * Run Quark, open a document, and try it out!

  • How do i change the font color in mail message

I am trying to change the Font colour in Mail message to Blue as a permanent preference in Mail - Preferences. The system does not accept the settings and goes back to black. Is there a way to change the same.

The color of the font is determined by the recipient's email client. So you could change it, but it would depend on the recipient's settings.
And besides, blue is harder to read.

  • Change unread message color in Mail

I'm trying to mimic a particularly useful feature in Entourage, the show messages using these colors for read and unread messages. In Entourage you can simply set a preference to show unread messages as one color and read messages as another. Mail doesn't have this capability at all. You can set either the text color or the background color, but you cannot change this color depending on the status of the message (read or unread). The only thing I can do is either set the text or background color of all messages using rules, or set the text on unread messages to bold using preferences.
I found an Applescript that sort of does what I want:
    tell application "Mail"
set background color of (messages of inbox whose read status is false) to red--unread
set background color of (messages of inbox whose read status is true) to none--default read
    end tell
However, this script will not work if you change "background color" to "text color". It also changes the text color of the read messages in the preview pane to black when it runs the second part and I can't figure out a way to make the text a different color. I have a rule set up to set the color of text to a specific account, but the script overrides the rule.
Any suggestions on how this can be done?

I'm sorry you find my responses to be rude. I simply stated that you are not answering my question. I also said that I appreciate your attempts.
I'm not trying to argue with you, but you come across as if you didn't even take the time to read my original post. Your replies all mention things I already covered in that post, such as the Mail option to display unread messages in bold, or using an Applescript or even trying another program.
I was hoping that someone might be able to either tweak the Applescript I submitted or provide another option I hadn't considered, rather than simply suggest trying things I already said I've tried.
Sorry that this offends you. That was never my intention.

  • How to set font Color in Mail

Sometime ago I set in Mail the default font to Arial, and the default font Size to 18, so when I write a new email these are my default font and size. But I could not set the font Color. How do I do this?

Sounds like you have the Preferences toolbar closed on another selection.
Go to Mail > Preferences and at the top right of the Preferences window is a clear pill shaped button.
Selecting this button opens/closes the complete Preferences toolbar.

  • Rename Flag Color in Mail

I would like to rename flags so they are meaningful when applied to messages in Mail.
I search 'flag messages for action' in Mail help, select Rename Flags, and it reads Flags appear in the sidebar in the Reminders section. If you have used more than one flag, the flags are listed by color. To change the name of a flag, double-click it and then type a new name. For example, double-click Red, and then type Urgent.
I cannot find a 'Reminders section' anywhere in Version 6.5 (1508) of Mail, and thus cannot find anywhere else to rename the flags.

    Hi, BreathingSister,
This is the method I've always used to rename the flags: http://mattgemmell.com/2011/07/21/renaming-flags-in-mail-on-lion/.
You might try that. (I know it says it's for Lion, but it works on Mountain Lion too.)
    I hope that helps.

  • Is there a Terminal command to set alternate row colors in Mail?

I'd like to enable the alternate row colors in the message list, but the only way I can find to do it requires Developer tools to be installed.
Not bad for my Mac, but it seems a bit of a workload for the other 19 Macs in the office. There's nothing in Onyx or Secrets that'll do this.
Here's what I found on the web: http://pjkh.com/articles/2007/10/08/alternating-row-colors-in-apple-mail
    There's a plug-in called WideMail which I'm using but it doesn't seem 100% stable.
    Thanks

Just do the hack once and copy that version of the Mail.app application (or just the MessageViewerContents.nib file) to the other machines. Just make sure that they are running exactly the same version of Mail and MacOS X. This hack will probably not work in Snow Leopard, by the way.

You now every app has to get it's own password now? You'll find it at settings => password for programs and settings
GoogleMail app for iOS will work with your normal password. Mail on IOS and MacOS has to get their own password.

  • Color coded mail rule stopped working

We were color coding our email via rules. i.e. anything from family is highlighted in blue on the list of mail.
Just got a new MacbookPro and installed everything to it from Time Machine. Now the rules seem to be working intermitantely. They show up if you go to preferences and look at the rules, but don't seem to be totally functioning.
    Any thoughts?

Well all I can suggest is that you go in and check out the settings on that mail rule and see if everything is just like it was a year ago (when it was working ;)).
