ColorSync Question... Matching FCP colors with QT and DVD

I am using FCP 5. I edit mostly for web download and occasionally to be put on DVD. Basically I use the color corrector to make the colors in the preview window the way I want them, as I do not have a broadcast monitor. But when exporting to H.264 and played back in quicktime the colors always look washed out and too light. This happens both when not using the FCP ColorSync filter and when using it (using Generic sRGB). Here are some screen captures, as you can see FCP shows the colors much darker (the way I want them).
What is the best way to get the two colors to match? I need the Quicktime colors to look the same on all computers (Windows or Mac, Calibrated Screen or not) or at least as close as humanly possible. I understand that each codec has a different gamma, but there has to be a way to do this. Also how should I do this for DVDs to be played back on TVs (again without a broadcast monitor)?
--Thanks!

It will never look the same in QT as it looks in FCP. Final Cut adds a gamma adjustment automatically. I guess you don't need a color critical monitor if you are not going to broadcast. You need to compress small parts of your video to the codec you will be putting online and watch them in a browser. Use small segments with the most important information, and take very good notes on every test you do. When you find the one that works best, that is your master template for Compressor. Start there for all following projects. And keep in mind, you will never be able to see what it will look like in everyone's monitor. Some people have nice monitors with high contrast ratios, others have cheap LCDs or even old, burned out CRT monitors.
If you want to see it on a monitor, hook up your Mac to your television with a DVI to S-Video or RCA adapter. Not the ideal situation, but the adapter only costs about 15 or 20 dollars I think.

  • Managing Color with LR and the Canon Pixma Pro 9000 10.1.2.0 printer driver

    I would like help understanding how to manage color in LIghtroom with the Canon Pro 9000 10.1.2.0 printer driver. When I ask LR to manage color in the Printing Module Color Management Profile, it warns me to turn off the printer managing color. But I cannot find where to do this in the driver.
    The Color Options menu in the driver gives an additional choice for "Color Mode", but there are no choices here except "Standard", "Linear" or "Tone". The only Canon documentation I can find shows a choice to turn off printer management here, but this driver doesn't give me that choice.
    If I look in the driver's "Color Matching", I see only two choices: ColorSync or Vendor Matching. ColorSync brings up Canon profiles like "Pro9000 Fine Art Photo Rag", but selecting one of these gives a warning of unexpected results. This pushes me back to Vendor Matching. But is this turning off the printer driver and leaving it to Lightroom?
    Right now, I am getting the best results from choosing "Managed by Printer" in LR's Color Management Profile, and setting "Color Matching" in the Canon driver to "Vendor Matching". If I instead choose one of the Canon profiles in LR's Color Management Profile (and it tells me to turn off the printer managing, which I cannot do), then my prints have a slightly bluer color cast.
    Is there a way to turn off the printer managing color in this driver and turn this over to LR, or am I getting the best results possible with the printer managing color anyway?
    I am using a 2.4 GHz Intel iMac with OS 10.5.4, 2 gigs SDRAM, standard ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro video card. I downloaded the Canon printer driver from their website, so I assume this is the latest. there is another driver available at their website, but for a lower bit depth. Should I abandon the 10.1.2.0 for this other one? I work with Nikon D300 NEFs, and I assumed the higher bit depth printer driver will work better with these images.
    Any help will be greatly appreciated!

    Dear DYP: Unfortunately, those choices are not available in the 10.1.2.0 Canon Printer driver. There are only 2 radio buttons, ColorSync and Vendor Matching. ColorSync then provides a drop-down menu, with no choice for turning off the printer driver.
    But I think I found the answer. I found a deeply buried FAQ on the Canon site (no direct URL; sorry!) Here it says:
    "Issue: How do I disable the printer driver color correction when using the CUPS driver in Mac OS X 10.5.x?
    Solution: Change color management options for printing (Mac OS X 10.5.x)
    Change color management options for printing
    Open the document you wish to print.
    Click 'File' and then click 'Print.'
    Note: If the Print window contains only two pop-up menus, click the triangle beside the Printer pop-up menu for expanded options.
    Select 'Color Matching' from the Print Options pop-up menu.
    Select 'ColorSync' if you want the application you are using, and not the printer driver, to control the color management of the printed output.
    Note: If you are using Adobe Photoshop CS2 or CS3 and have selected 'Let Photoshop Determine Colors', the 'Color Matching' from the Print Options pop-up menu is automatically set to 'ColorSync.'
    Select 'Vendor Matching' if you want the printer driver to control the color management of the printed output."
    I tried it, and chose "Automatic" as a choice in ColorSync. The choices under "Color Options" are then greyed out, implying that the Canon driver is now turned off.
    The prints came out great, with no color cast, and a little brighter than the printer managed prints.
    So, Vendor Managed means printer manages, ColorSync means LR manages.
    Thanks, everyone, for keeping me going on tracking this down!

  • Can I avoid re-encoding of .mov files with Compressor and DVD Studio Pro?

    Hello,
    I've had some projects banned at one of the tracking sites because my iMovie 6.0.1/iDVD 7.1.1 workflow involves re-encoding of the iMovie .mov file to MPEG 2 when authored in iDVD. I did some research, and was advised that I could get around the re-encoding by using Compressor and DVD Studio Pro instead of iDVD. But, when I import the iMovie file to Compressor for authoring in DVD Studio Pro, the result is another MPEG 2 file. So, am I missing something, or is there no way for me to avoid re-encoding with Apple video production tools.
    Thanks for any assistance.

    The simple fact that you have to encode your files into an mpeg-2 stream means that you're going to experience a loss in quality.  Check the bitrate of your DV files.  The max bitrate for all of the elementary steams (audio, video) on a DVD is 9.8mbps.  So if your source has a higher bitrate than that... you're going to experience "lossiness."
    However there are some tricks that I've read about that increase the overall quality of compression... and yes they are for windows.  Check out AVIsynth and MeGUI... there is a learning curve to learning these tools though.  I never followed through with it.
    EDIT: Also forgot to mention that learning these things takes TIME.  Quality encoding takes much longer than realtime.
    You can also check out some higher quality mpeg2 encoders like cinemacraft and HC encoder, although the former costs $$$.  The quality you get from these encoders are much better than what you have in iDVD and DVDSP/Compressor.

  • Is it possible to match Lockbox program with MICR and/or Invoice, PO , BOL

    Hi ,
    Could please someone let me know , in Lockbox program whether it's feasible to do the matching with the PO , BOL(Bill of Lading) other than the MICR and/or Invoice?
    Any help is highly appreciated and rewarded with the points...
    Thanks

    If you want your LabVIEW program from Windows to run on Linux, you need to compile it first with a LabVIEW for Linux version. Be aware that path management is slightly different under Linux. So your Windows application won't run under Linux if you don't prepare for it.
    If you want a LabVIEW / Windows application to interface with LabVIEW / Linux, you can do this with TCP/IP functions, or perhaps even with global variables (not sure if they work under Linux).
    Can't help you with the second question(s). I'd be worried about getting any camera working under Linux and LabVIEW, but I'm not sure if this is a valid concern.

  • Flawed colors with Lightroom and Fuji XE-1

    The Camera Raw support for Fuji XE-1 is heavily flawed. Using Lightroom as a raw converter for these pictures, severe color mismatches can be found in the images. The problem is well known and was frequently reported on in internet blogs (sometimes refered to as "chroma smearing"), and it still persists even with Lightroom 4.3. Fuji tells me that all necessary data was given to Adobe long ago. So here comes my question: Why is the support for Fuji's XE-1 so flawed and when will Adobe guarantee full compatibility?

    There is a thread in the Official Adobe forum for the reporting of bugs and feature request about the sub-standard processing of raw files from the Fuji X Pro1 and X E1.  They have acknowledged that they are aware of the problem and are working on resolving the issue.
    It appears that the Fuji sensor is unique and more of a chalange in creating an acceptable quality profile. I am sure that Abobe is making every effort to resolve the problem, however they will not release an update untill it meets their quality standard. Process engines are different for every third party raw processing software providers who are not able to use the camera manufacturer's proprietory processes and profiles.
    Each provider have their own chefs and recipe's are unique.

  • E3000 questions. Cisco Connect with https and turn off wireless?

    My old router died this weekend after 10 years and I have been wanting to get a faster router for a while anyways.
    I picked up a E3000 and set it up yesterday.
    The firmware is 1.0.03
    I have two main questions
    I changed the router settings so you can only browser manage the router through https and turned off http access to the router.
    Cisco Connect now doesn't work. Will Cisco Connect work with HTTPS? Do I have to do something to get it to work?
    I also didn't see a version number on Cisco Connect am I just not noticing it?
    I'd really like to shut off wireless on most days when I'm not home. I want the router to still be working since my desktop computers are directly connected to the router and I remote into them. Is there an easy way to shutoff the wireless and then easily turn it back on when I get home?
    thanks
    mike

    Mine works the same. It's probably designed that way for the manual way of logging into the setup page of the router.
    No, it seems no updates yet or see the need to have one.
    No, it doesn't have that option unfortunately.

  • Correcting Colors with Imac and FC

    Hello To everyone,
    Do you know the best way to connect an external video monitor to the Imac. I been told that is much better to use a calibrated external monitor for this. Do you know if is make a diffrence if is anlog or digital in terms of quality to crorrect colors the best possible way?
    Thanks a lot for your help

    If working with any DV25 codec, connect your Mac to a qualified DV device (DV camcorder, VTR or converter) via Firewire then connect the DV device's analog outputs to your calibrated TV monitor.
    If working with any other video codec/format, you'll most likely need a dedicated capture card which will only work with a computer that has a PCI slot available ... your iMac doesn't.
    Then there's the Matrox MXO http://www.matrox.com/video/en/products/mxo/ but you'll need to have an extra monitor OUT port on your Mac.

    Now, my questions:
    1) Do I create an efi system partition on /dev/sda or do I use the one windows created on /dev/sdb?
    2) Just to make sure, I still need a /boot partition outside of LUKS even when using an efi system partition, don"t I?

  • Questions about reading/writing with output and input streams

    I'm getting a bit confused on this subject. I have written an array of doubles to a file, and now I need to know how to read them back in to another array. I have also wrapped each double into its own object, but I need to know how to write those to a file, and read the doubles contained in them back into an array.
    Here is what I have so far; the method that writes the array of doubles to a file.
    public void writePrimDoubles() {
              DataOutputStream outStream;
              System.out.println("Now writing the values to file...");
              try     {
                   outStream = new DataOutputStream(new FileOutputStream("file.dat"));
              catch (IOException ex) {
                   System.out.println("Error opening file");
              return;
              try {
                   for(int i = 0; i<arraySize; i++)
                        outStream.writeBytes(numberArray[i] + "\n");
                   outStream.close();
              catch(IOException e) {
                   System.out.println("Error writing to file");
         }

    * writes all doubles in the given array to the file 'file.dat'
    public void writePrimDoubles(double[] array) throws IOException {
       DataOutputStream out = new DataOutputStream(new FileOutputStream("file.dat"));
       for(int i=0; i<array.length; i++) {
          out.writeDouble(array);
    out.close();
    * reads in all stored doubles from the given file ('file.dat').
    * cause of each double has been written to a 8byte part of the file
    * you could get the number of doubles stored in the file by dividing
    * its filesize by 8.
    * Alternatively you might first store all read doubles as Double in
    * a list (e.g. java.util.ArrayList). After reading all doubles you could then
    * create a new double[] with the lists size (double[] array = new double[list.size()];)
    * -> this alternative is commented out in the following code.
    public double[] readPrimDoubles() throws IOException {
    File file = new File("file.dat");
    DataInputStream in = new DataInputStream(new FileInputStream(file));
    double[] array = new double[file.length()/8];
    for(int i=0; i<array.length; i++) {
    array[i] = in.readDouble();
    in.close();
    return array;
    ArrayList list = new ArrayList();
    try {
    while(true) {
    list.add(new Double(in.readDouble()));
    catch(EOFException e) {} // catchs the exception thrown when end of file is reached
    in.close();
    double[] array = new double[list.size()];
    for(int i=0; i<list.size(); i++) {
    array[i] = ((Double)list.get(i)).doubleValue();
    return array;
    For further information on the classes you have to use you might have a look to the concerning API documentation (http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/docs/api/). In this docs you could find all methods, constructors and fields accessable for a class.
    have fun...

    If you have difficulties fixing problems with software that is acting up I would suggest that you do a clean install of your OS and the software. That is, after backing up your files, of course.

  • Thoughts on BEST COMPRESSION for use with iDVD and DVD Studio Pro...

    Hi all...
    I'm having an issue with some visual artifacts that are present after burning a dvd using either idvd or dvd studio pro.
    My sequence containts footage (h.264) and photographs with titles. The photos (w/moves) look great, very crisp. So do the titles.
    However, the video looks awful. Pans and tilts creating streaking, so does any action with the frame.
    I don't see this streaking while viewing in the qt window or when previewing the dvd...
    I'm exporting as a qt reference using the dv/dvc pro setting, when I check the dvd on an ntsc monitor, the image is very streaky.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Mark

    Are you using FCP?? Then I see why you said QT reference movie... which is the best way. Being more descriptive about your setting when posting a question will return more helpful answers. (editing tool, source materials, machine spec...etc) You said that your footage was h264 and you posted your question in iMovie forum so I couldn't have guessed FCP and DV...
    If your sequence is DV on FCP I can't think of anything else but QT reference movie route. I don't understand why your video won't show interlacing in QT player or DVD preview, but perhaps they force deinterlacing for preview, who knows.
    You said your DVD looks 'very streaky' on ntsc tv. Is it to the point that it looks unnatural? Is overall motion jerky? If so, perhaps the field order had been messed with and changed. But I'm not quite sure about the exact nature of your problem. Visual problem in a subjective verbal description can be hard to communicate

  • Help with transcoding and DVD size

    Hello!  I'm a total newbie when it comes to this stuff (encore/premiere, video editing, DVD making, etc...) so it has been quite a curve so far for me.
    I am stuck in one point now, however.
    Basically, I have 8 hours of video (low quality informational videos, internet download stuff--all .mp4) that take up 1.7gb on the hard drive.  I've burned them all to a simple content DVD, but I felt that I should add menu's to make it more professional looking and user friendly, and thus I was recommended encore.
    So I played around and made some menus, submenus and added about 10 of the videos and noticed the project size was already a whopping 8gb.  I then just imported every video to see the size, and it wound up being 17.9gb!!
    My question is...am I being unrealistic expecting to have my videos, that only took up 1.7gb on a DVD with menus, or is there just a combination of settings I'm missing so it encodes it to fit on a regular 4.7gb DVD?
    Thanks!!

    You can also try to make a FLASH enco
    ding using encore.
    It will provide the application player too, and you can authoring your project using Encore.
    Usually flash video is very small in files dimensions and you can probably get your goal.
    Hope this can help you.

  • Problem with Installer and DVD drive

    I am having problems with my dvd combo drive reading discs. It keeps spitting them out. More importantly, I am trying to load Adobe Illustrator CS2 and cannot get all the wat through the installation proccess. Is there a patch I am not aware of??

    You could be looking at some kind of driver corruption issue (say if that sector on your hd had gone bad, or the file was dorked somehow). Have you done repaired permissions on the hd recently?
    Do all types of DVDs fail -- music, movies, and apps? If some work and others do not, then it could be a problem with a particular app.
    It never hurts to check the cables. Insufficient data or power can cause all kinds of problems.

Sorry, I've been playing with this stuff so long ( I started with RedHat 5.2), that I have forgotton how to explain the steps. But, if you untar the package (I do it in its own directory} You should be able to move the binary to a location of you choice. I think you need someone more experienced than me to describe the steps.
    ok and ty very much for help so far
    ps: did you find any solution with using k3b?
    i like it more in a graphical enviroment.

  • Should I buy iMac or MacPro for working with video and dvd?

    I currently have a Macbook which I am using to edit camcorder footage in iMovie and iDVD. I have spent the last three years travelling and living abroad and have consequently accumulated a large backlog of footage and am now trying to work through it all and get it on to DVD. When I bought my Macbook it was intended as a portable stop gap whilst living abroad with the intention of upgrading to an Apple desktop when home again. Given that I want to work on getting through many hours of camcorder footage, and also start getting to grips with computer based music production, would an iMac with plenty of ram be sufficient or would I be better off splashing out more and getting a MacPro plus screen?

    I agree with the above recommendation, "Only you can decide how much you want to spend."
    Tell us (if you don't mind) exactly how much you wish to spend so we can further assist in advising you on which system might best address your needs. Also, only you can decide how important portability is to you in terms of working from a laptop as opposed to a beefier system. Is portability a critical factor to your work, or not? If not, go with a full size custom tower.
    Here's something else you may wish to consider prior to the actual purchase of any apple hardware / system configuration. Shop software first and foremost. Then built around that while addressing system requirements. In other words, don't place the cart before the horse (if you know what I mean).
