Colour correction in Lightroom - why can't it be as flexible as ACR? Feature request.

A lot of my work is fine art documentation for museums, galleries and artists.
In Adobe Camera Raw, I can perform a Fraser/Schewe type calibration.......

....that allows me total control over colour.
Essential to this exercise is a Color Sampler Tool, the ability to work in a colour space that everyone who uses my files will be using (Melissa? Seriously!) and (ideally) 0-255 RGB values.
At the risk of provoking attack ;-) I really think that when it comes to colour, Lightroom is more Prosumer than Pro.
I love using LR for my personal work, but I can't using it for colour critical work the way it is.
I accept that there will be 1000s of photographers who are achieving perfect colour from LR using some method or other. I just wish that a few of ACR's brilliant featuers hadn't been dropped and people like me had the choice.
Any chance, at the very least, of having a Colour Sampler Tool in LR4, as well as a grown up colour space? The % readout I could live with - just about.

Yes, the way the grid engages automatically when making lens corrections is extremely useful.

Totall agree.
You just need to learn how the color space works and you'll be able to do the same things as in ACR. If you ant to know the correct values for a MacBeth chart in Lightroom values (i.e. sRGB tone curve prophoto) see this list that I compiled ages ago.

One of the key points in the Fraser/Schewe exercise was that the grey patches had to be corrected before the colour patches could be. This makes perfect sense.
It's not clear to me that the DNG Profile Editor either requires this to be done first (e.g. in ACR and then choosing View/Apply Camera Raw Adjustments when the file is opened in the DNG editor) or that the DNG Editor can somehow compensate for this automatically. Any thoughts?

  • New to Lightroom- why can't I open two copies of LR?

    I like to have two copies of my past management software open at the same time so I can tag the RAW images that I have processed to tiffs.  I am currently using a trial version of LR to see if I want to purchase it and I cannot open two copies.  Any ideas?  Is it just a feature of the trial version?

    You probably went into full screen mode with the F key. Hit it again to cycle through the screen modes.
    What is your current management software?
    With Lightroom you are able to catalog all your RGB image files including RAW, PSD, TIFF, JPG. Regardless of where the images are located on your hard drive or external hard drive, Lightroom can help you manage them with flags, ratings (stars), and color labels. It can also help you organize images into collections without actually moving the files.
    All this can be accomplished with filters to sort images or by Smart Collections to automate the process of isolation.
    For example: If you have RAW images and TIFF images in a folder then you will see them together in Lightrooms Library Mode while viewing the Folders Panel. You can then use a Fiter to isolate just the RAW files or just the TIFF files. If you want to use a rating system to let you know which images have been "done" you could assign a star rating or a color rating. Again another method of filtering what work has been done or need to be done.
    In one of my workflows I will use a color code of Red for the files I need to work on for a client, Green for the files I have worked and Blue for the files that have been delivered. Note that I am not creating more images but simply tagging my images as their status changes.
    Smart collections can be setup to automatically gather all of the Red, Green, or Blue labelled images, allowing me to see instantly with a single click which images are done, delivered, or in need of work.

    This is the most inane feature I could possibly imagine...the whole point of texting is so that you DON'T HAVE TO SPEAK to the person...!?!?!?!
    If you're going to send an audio message to someone, maybe they might send one back, and so on, and so on, and...why not just use that other feature in your iPhone....THE PHONE!!!???
    I've already disabled the raise to talk aspect of it but it's so annoying I just want it to go away. Has anyone figured out how to do this yet?

    Hey, I just got my ipod touch 8 gig. It came with 1.1.2 on it so I updated. Now when I go to settings and about, it says it's 1.1.3 as well... However I cant add clips to my home screen (when I press + all I see is add bookmark), and I also can't re arrange my icons.... Do I need to do something to enable these features? All the firmware update of 1.1.3 added was the ability for your ipod to watch rented movies from itunes and thats ONLY if you update your itunes to 7.6. So to get anything you wish you must get the $20 upgrade.

    You need to be more specific about what doesn't work. The GPS works for me in a vehicle; when used with Google Maps its far more useful than the very expensive navigation system that was factory installed in my car.

    Technical informations:
    PC with Windows 7 64-bit, Lightroom 5.7.1 64-bit installed.
    What I have done:
    I downloaded the newest LR 5.71 and installed it again - mode repair; without success
    I checked my PC with Norton 360: full scanning and optimizing registry
    I restarted the PC and than I installed the LR 5.7 again - repair
    Trouble 1:
    Two days ago I could work with my LR 5 and to import pictures from a SD was no problem. Now I can start LR 5 and I can watch/modify pictures, but as soon as I try to import new pictures LR 5 stops and gives the message "your LR 5 64-bit does not work correctly - searching for solution". I have not changed anything in my computer since lasttime LR 5 worked properly, only the registry was optimized by Norton 360.
    Trouble 2:
    I live in Switzerland and my language ist German. I dit not find a place where I can present my problem in German, e.g. a phone number oder email-address oder german-chat. My English is to week for a discussion for computer problems and do understand it.
    Help:

  • Why can one spot colour convert into two different sets of CMYK values?

    Working within Illustrator CC, I have an EPS file of a logo which has a colour fill value of:
    Pantone 152 U
    CMYK: 0C 51M 100Y 1K
    When I copy and paste this into a new document I get a much duller colour (orange) with colour values of:
    Pantone 152 U
    CMYK: 2C 57M 83Y 2K
    I have enabled 'ask when opening' & 'ask when pasting' for Profile Mismatches in Edit->Color Settings->'Color Management Policies' - no warning shows up.
    I have also tried turning off, changing color management policies.
    I've opened the original eps file and assigned my working space profile (Coated FOGRA39) and then try copy and pasting without success.
    Help!

    In addition to John's useful comments:
    Using Pantone 512U (uncoated) isn't correct for Coated Fogra.
    Why can one spot color convert into two different CMYK sets if converted by the user?
    Assumed, the one spot color is uniquely defined by one Lab set:
    – the CMYK spaces are different
    – the CMYK spaces are the same but the Rendering Intents are different
    – the CMYK spaces are the same but the Black Point Compensations are different
       (on or off for Relative Colorimetric).
    Assumed, the spot colors are equal by name, but valid for different versions, both in Lab:
    – this obviousl at present the most common source of deviations.
    Assumed, the spot colors are defined by CMYK:
    – a chaotic situation which I wouldn't even like to dicuss.
    – CMYK to CMYK conversions should be avoided under all circumstances.
    The solutions:
    If the spot color will be printed always and everywhere by Pantone spot ink:
    – purchase an actual Pantone color fan und discuss with the printer the mixture for the selected ink.
    If the Pantone color is merely a design feature, but the doc will be printed by CMYK:
    – choose such a color and verify by soft proofing that the color is in-gamut for common CMYK spaces. 
    – read the Lab values and proceed as far as possible using Lab.
    – don't use ink names, don't use any reference to Pantone.
    – convert into to a specificic CMYK space in advance to the generation of the specific PDF.

  • Lightroom 4 can no longer see the pictures on any of my SD cards, why is this?

    Hi all,
    Lightroom 4 can no longer see the pictures on my SD card when I insert it into my computer. The photos are definately on there, when I right click and press 'show in finder' they are all right there, yet Lightroom can't see them - it show '0 Photos' on the memory card tab .
    I played around moving pictures from sub folders on the SD card to the first level (which didn't make a difference), and checked read/write permissions (which all seem fine).
    Gear:
    -IMac, OS X v10.7.5, Intel Core i5.
    -Nikon D5000
    -Mix of SanDisk and PNY Professional memory cards (all have pictures on and Lightroom cant see any!)

    You cannot open files directly with Lr.
    You have to import them.

  • Why can 't I store images on my SD care in Lightroom mobile for Android

    I don't understand why I can't store images on my SD card. I get that a mobile app can't ever have the same functionality as the desktop version without taking up all the memory, but what on earth made someone think it was a good idea to store images in memory that is not only highly limited, not upgradable, but also used by other apps and more importantly the OS. Why can't I store images on the MicroSD card. That thing can be 128gb which is enough storage to work on a decent collection of images.
    I would love there to be some more control over aspects of the image, but what there is works well. It also syncs effectively and there isn't that much lag between each event, but what happens when I need to edit 50 images from a device I keep in my pocket [which theoretically should be viable]?
    The most useful feature for me is processing images I've taken with my phone, and syncing them back to Lightroom...
    Please tell me that external storage is going to be added?
