Colour in pdf is appearing washed out

Hi everyone,
I have a document with a whole heap of cross-references. I assigned a character style to them when I created them, so they're all pointing to the same style which has a specific Blue colour.
When I created this colour, I assigned:
a colour type of Process,
a colour mode of RGB, and
the colour value Red: 0, Green: 0 and Blue: 255.
The problem is that when I export to pdf some of these links appear with a blue colour that's a bit washed out, ie. not full 255 Blue as I specified. Oddly enough this only happens on some of the pages, not all of them.
The swatch icon has an out-of-gammut warning but I didn't think this would apply since I'm exporting a pdf that is using RGB colours anyway.
I tried setting the transparency blend mode to RGB. This helped so that the colours all appeared the same in Indesign but it didn't help with the way they appeared in the pdf. Also when exporting to pdf, I tried no colour conversion and also tried a convert to document RGB setting. Both of these produced the same results, ie. most of it is the correct blue but odd pages here and there appear as the washed out version.
I wondered if anyone else has experienced this or whether there's a workaround?
Appreciate any advice.

Simulate Overprint is available only when two conditions are met: you are flattening transparency by exporting to Acrobat 4 compatibility or lower, AND you are converting colors to a destination profile
Since you're saying that the above conditions need to be met before simulate overprint is available, I don't know why you're saying it's odd that it's disabled when "No colour conversion" is chosen. I mean choosing "no colour conversion" doesn't meet the requirements that you mention so it seems to me it shouldn't be enabled. But anyway, I tried a setting where it exports to Acrobat 4 but I got the following error:
"Pages with transparency will not include hyperlinks, bookmarks, movies, sounds, button items, or eBook tags. If your pages require these features, click Cancel, and then select an Acrobat 5.0 or later export option"
So due to the above error I didn't go ahead with the version 4 export as I need it to include hyperlinks.
So the first thing would maybe be trying Acrobat 5 or higher compatibility to keep the transparency live
Yes, I've already tried this but still no luck.
Next would be to explicitly convert to the document RGB profile, I think, and just verify that the blend space really is set to RGB
I also tried this - but again still getting the same result.
I'm a bit hesitant to post a couple of the pdf pages on a public forum as the ebook is for a client and I get a bit paranoid.
I don't really know what I'm going to do.

  • Colors are appearing washed out when saving from Illustrator to PDF

    Hey Guys,
I am working on a cover page for my office to go along with our bid packages. I have finished adding all of the elements that they wanted and added a little flare to it. Its a really basic document and when I save it into a PDF form, the colors appear washed out or like the PDF adds a lot of white. the Rich black appear gray, the red appears pinkish... and the blue is much lighter than it looks in AI.
I need this to be completed soon, and I have been having this problem for a while now. Im not sure if its just the way it looks on the screen, or if it will print like that. I am a self taught Adobe guy.. So I am a little confused as to how to make this all work
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!
    Steve

    Steve,
What the PDF ultimately looks like depends on the settings when you create it. If you open it in Reader, it may be somewhat off, but in Acrobat it should look right (if your colour management settings are the same as in Illy).
A rich black may be customized to match the artwork in question (such as no C if there is no C in the artwork), or you may have some of each, often with emphasis on C and maybe M; there may be different views on what a rich black should hold.

  • Monitor suddenly appears washed out

We've got a Dual Processor PowerMac G4 (Mirrored Drive Doors) with both ADC and DVI ports, and recently the color has shifted dramatically such that all screen images appear washed out. We've run the hardware test, which completed succesfully. We swapped this Sony 17" CRT monitor with a Sony 15" CRT, with the same result. We even switched it from using the ADC adaptor to the DVI port using an adapter from a Mac Mini.
When completing the onscreen calibration, the computer asks to increase the contrast to its maximum and then put the brightness to a level such that a circle/square combination is barely distinguishable. With the contrast up fully, the brightness won't go high enough to distinguish the circle/square... additionally, there are two light horizontal lines present onscreen, even when the display is inverted to white on black.
Any help or insight into what components could be causing this would be greatly appreciated!

Sounds like the video card in your machine might be going if it effects more than one monitor. If it were just one then it would be case of a bad monitor or since you swapped connecters, it could have been that. Your tests seem to point to a bad video card, or one that has been unseated. Check to make sure the video card is firmly inplace in the AGP or PCI slot. If that is not the problem then it may be as I suggested at the beginning of my comments.

  • Imported clips appear washed out, too bright

I posted this question in iMovie HD forum, but realize its an iMovie HD 6 application I'm using. so here goes again:
I'm having problems importing video into iMovie. They appear washed out, as if the brightness had been turned up. The video appears fine in the crt of the camera, but the video imported to iMovie looks terrible. This just started happening, and I can't figure out why.
Is this a problem that has cropped up with my video camera? Or have I somehow altered a setting in iMovie? Any ideas would be appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Jon

No one answered my post which leads me to believe I did something wrong...oh well. Better luck next time.

When reading web pages...many lines are unclear, not sharp...they are appearing washed out. We just replaced our older Century Link modem/router with their newer version [PK5001A]. When I run the cursor over the bad looking type...it usually sharpens up, though the effect created is very woozy feeling to your eyes. Why is this flaky looking type occurring and what can we do about it?

  • 3G s pictures appeared "washed out"

I was concerned when I set my wallpaper on my 3Gs the same as my 3G. It appeared washed out and the contrast was not good at all. Putting them side by side produces a distinct difference on all photos.
I know I can control the brightness, but wonder if anything can be done about the lack of contrast.
Has anyone else had this issue? If not, I will have to go by the Apple store and see what they say.
    Thanks

  • Images appear washed out.

Firefox isn't displaying images correctly. They are appearing extremely washed out. These images are local to my computer and ImageMagic & GIMP can display them properly.

Try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox.
*Tools > Options > Advanced > General > Browsing: "Use hardware acceleration when available"
This can be caused by a problem with the color profile for your display monitor or color profiles embedded in images.<br />
Try to disable color management to test if it is caused by a problem with color management.<br />
You can set the gfx.color_management.mode pref to 0 on the about:config page to disable Color Management.<br />
You need to close and restart Firefox to make the change effective.

  • Adobe Reader docs appear washed out and faint with Firefox 6.0.1, but not with Internet Explorer. Running Windows 7

The PDF docs opened in Firefox are very light and the color of print is multicolored shaded. Different parts of display different shades of any color but black. Just loaded newest Adobe Reader, did not help. Previously running Reader 9. Haven't had a problem till Firefox 6. If I fool with the Window Color in 7 I can effect the PDF doc. Lowering saturation level to nothing helps, but doesn't fix problem.

  • Why do my images appear washed out when I use Save for Web?

Q: The color/brightness/tone of my image changes when I use
    Save for Web. Why?
A: Photoshop is a color-managed application. The Web is not. Normally, when you view an image in
    Save for Web or
ImageReady you are viewing it without color management and see it how it will appear when uploaded to the Web.
To minimize changes, Convert your image to sRGB (i.e from
    Edit menu choose
    Convert to Profile )before using
Save for Web. You should also make sure that
Save for Web has been configured so that images are displayed using the document color profile (see attached screenshot for guidance).
You should also ensure that your monitor properly calibrated and the gamma is set to 2.2.

Same here. Didn't get any good New Years Eve photos indoors.

  • H.264 gamma shift/washed out colours on export

I know this has been discussed before but I've been researching this topic for the past two hours and still can't find a solution.
I have .mov source files from a Canon 7D. Exporting them from PP CS5.5 (Mac OS X - Lion, 10.7.4) in h.264 or by 'matching sequence settings' results in a gamma shift/desaturated colours. Playing the resulting h.264 file in QuickTime Player, VLC, Elmedia all result in the same colour shift so this is not an issue with QT simply interpreting the gamma incorrectly.
Uploading to Vimeo and Youtube results in the same gamma shift. The monitor I'm using is not calibrated but when puling up a VLC window of the exported file next to the Program Monitor (on the same monitor) shows that there is a definite difference. Below is a screenshot.
Is there any way to produce an exported file for Vimeo use that reproduces the gamma as I see it in the Program Monitor?
Any help would be massively appreciated.
    Thanks.

Did you use Quicktime's H.264 export option? Or just standard h.264 using the .mp4 container? If you used the Quicktime h.264 the option itself is flawed. Here are some links regarding the issue.

If you read around the net a lot of people have had this issue with h264. A couple of the articles I posted are supposed to "fix" the problem although I haven't ever tried any of them myself. I've never experinced a gamma shift when using the standard h.264 format option in Premiere, however if you have already used that option and you're still having issues then I have no clue what is going on. However when I import ProRes files into Premiere they don't appear washed out, but when I play them in Quicktime or VLC they do appear washed out. I've always just assumed Premiere was somehow correcting it, because when I export my video to mpeg-2 for playback on our server it looks like it looked in Premiere.
From what I have read though the reason the Quicktime format does this when using the h.264 codec looks and looks washed  out is because of a incorrect gamma tag. But Premiere isn't affected/fooled by this like most media players are. According from how they made it sound on provideo and the one other site I read it on anyways.

  • N73 viewfinder washed out colours

Hi, just got my N73 with 3 X-Series silver.
Great phone but I'm finding that the viewfinder display seems to be washed out. It's fine for a split second when I first slide back the lens cover but then instantly appears washed out. It's almost like the N73 applies some sort of filter to the image. This behaviour is also evident when I flick through the white balance options - ie looks fine for a split second, then reverts to washed out look.
Incidently, if I preview a photo that I take, it appears fine. It just seems to be the "LIVE" display in the viewfinder.
Can anyone tell me if this is a fault or if it's a setting somewhere I can change.
For info I modified the light sensor setting and it didn't have any affect.
    regards,
    Shaka

Sounds to me as if your color profile (system preferences/displays/color) is off. Reset it to: lcd screen and see if that takes care of it. Not sure why your macbook doesn't remember that setting, though. In any case, it's less hassle to change it there than to reset the PRAM every time.
    Hope this helps,

  • Color washed out in Illustrator CS6

Using Illustrator on Mac OS 10.7.4
We've been using Illustrator for years and have come across a problem we never encountered before.
PMS spot colors appear washed out on the screen and appear washed out when viewing them in a pdf.
Customers are complaining about their proofs as well.
    What happened?

    Hello Chuck,
Pantone Plus Series uses Lab color definition in order to make better simulation (on screen) and better CMYK conversions based on the Color Settings preferences in Adobe graphic applications.
When I say "better CMYK conversion", I mean CMYK separation based on the intended printing condition defined by the CMYK ICC working color space set in your preferences.
It is working.. I use it every day.
Worst issue:, if you do tests with Pantone Plus Color Bridge default CMYK values, you will be amazed to see the difference!
Just try Pantone 424 Coated (a gray), and check the CMYK values from Pantone Color Bridge Coated.... completely different! WHY? Because those CMYK values has been define by Pantone, using an "international" ISO printing condition!!??
I’ve tried to find out the ICC profile that could match those CMYK values but did not found it yet.
So, it is better to make your own CMYK match, using those new Pantone Plus color libraries (in Lab) than using a "generic" CMYK build that would create a nightmare on press if even it is not made for your printing condition.
    Hop this help!

  • Stylus 740 pics washed out

Recently upgraded to OSX 10.3 and Appleworks 6. Docs with photo and text layout printed on my Stylus 740 now appear washed out and the colour balance is very different from when they were printed in OS9.
The guy at Epson said the OSX Printer driver isn't very good with the 740 and that I should print the docs in OS9 so it will use the previous Epson driver.
Is the Apple driver really not that good and if so, how do I get it to print in OS9. I no longer have Appleworks in OS9?

Do you still have an OS 9 System Folder (not System folder-for OS X) on your hard drive? If so, and there is a folder called "Applications (Mac OS 9)" then your old AppleWorks app could be in there.
    Hope this helps.
