Colour to transparent gradient in Illustrator CS2

I am creating a logo in Illustrator CS2 and i want to put a reflection
underneath, that has a gradient fading to transparent. It can be done but the logo needs to be used in other programs such as InDesign. When placed into InDesign the transparency of the gradient is no longer there, it changes to white.
Is there any way to do this?
thanks Tim

Try using a transparency mask: http://livedocs.adobe.com/en_US/Illustrator/13.0/help.html?content=WS2D8B6C1E-A2C8-4902-8 9C8-E5D04A6B314B.html

  • Problems with image after flattening transparency in illustrator cs2

Hi,Could someone please help me.Im using illustrator cs2 with windows xp.
The problem i have is that after flattening any image using transparency
masks or opacity i can see thin broken white lines in the image.
They appear where the opacity masks are,or where they cross in the image.
I haven't been using illustrator for long and am not sure if it's something
    i'm doing incorrectly or not.
Also if i select all the paths after flattening i can see double the paths
that were there before which run along the unsightly white lines in the image.
Please could someone shed some light on this,it's driving me crazy.
    Thanks, Cal

Hi,I spent weeks trying to sort it out. Apparently it's unavoidable. I read somewhere that the white lines wouldn't appear when printed but i saved one of the images as a jpg an the lines were clearly visible.
Its because when the transparency in the image goes through the flattening process to enable printing it breaks the image into atomic regions and the white lines are the gaps in between.
People seem to think it's completely normal and acceptable but i don't . I think it's a load of old rubbish.
The way round it is to use stuff that doesn't use transparency like the gradient mesh and all that.
I can't be bothered with all that so i just save the unflattened image as a large png or jpg file for printing.
I'm no expert but if the facility to use transparency is there surely it should save perfectly after flattening. The whole things a real pain.
    Take care , Cal

  • Make placed JPEG color transparent in Illustrator CS2/3

I've been using CorelDRAW! for years and want to learn to use Illustrator CS2 and CS3.
In CorelDRAW I can import (place) a simple bitmap images, such as a JPEG, and I can select and make transparent any color in the image. An example would be to bring in an image that has a white area, select the white color with the eyedropper tool and then use a slider to change the opacity of the white. It's much simpler to do than to describe it!
I've searched the Adobe web site, asked some "experts" I know and also spent a few hours searching the web. It seems that there is no such capability built into Illustrator.
The only way I've been able to accomplish this task is to open the image with Photoshop, select the white area and make it a separate layer, then save it as a native Photoshop file, then import it into Illustrator.
The only thing annoying about this procedure is now I need an additional copy of a bitmap file.
    Thanks,
    WK

    Kurt Gold,
Thanks for the definitive answer, it still seems strange to me that this function is not in Illustrator. Oh well, life goes on.
Yes, CorelDraw's function is indeed called "Bitmap Color Mask."
    /no flame for Bert Philippus/
Where O' Where is this information in the FM? ;-)
    /no flame, no blame/
    Thanks,

  • Illustrator CS6 to CS4: White lines along edges of semi-transparent gradient meshes

    Hi,
I recently invested in CS6 Production Premium and I've just tested legacy support by saving an Illustrator CS6 image in CS4 format.
The image contains a number of semi-transparent gradient meshes used for highlights.
Having loaded the saved CS4 .ai file in CS6, white lines appear along my semi-transparent gradient meshes (see the attached screenshot).
What's happening is that the anchor points with 0% opacity in CS6 suddenly have 100% opacity when I load the saved CS4 files in CS6.
    Is this a known error?
If so, how/where do I report it?
Here are the relevant CS6 and CS4 files:
    http://snk.to/f-chcig8s9
P.S. There are no white lines when I save the image in CS5 format and load it in CS6.

The image contains a number of semi-transparent gradient meshes used for highlights.
CS4 doesn't support semi-transparent gradient meshes. So they are simulated by using opacity masks. The masks are generated atuomatically from the meshes in the file, so they have the exact same size, which causes the fringes. If you would create this manually, you would make the opacity mask slightly larger in order to avoid fringes.

  • Problems with Illustrator CS2

Argh! Suspected problem with Illustrator CS2...
When I look in the Stroke/Fill boxes for colours, I have no options available to me. All that appears is this: http://www.ioimi.com/images/strokefill.jpg.
Is this normal? All I want to do is selected different colours for the line stroke and fill colour of something I have already drawn using the pen tool.
Also, how do I move or remove rulers once placed and why is it that if I use the arrow keys on the end of a line it moves it more than one pixel? How do I keep a line straight? It's so much easier in photoshop but I need to learn.
    Please help...
    Thank you!

That is not the Color palette, it is the Swatches palette. It's where pre-mixed colours, gradients, and patterns can be stored and quickly applied. The file you are using has no swatches.
You can add your own by loading swatches from any other Illustrator file or from the libraries that ship with Illustrator. You can also add a swatch by mixing a colour in the Color palette and either dragging the colour onto the Swatches palette or clicking one the New Swatch icon (The page icon next to the trash can).

  • Thoughts on automation for gradient mesh illustrations....

So I've been looking around at various tutorials on creating gradient mesh illustrations. The general theme that keeps popping up is how time consuming it is to colourize the mesh, point by point. Some clever programmer out there could surely find some way of automating this process no?
The way I see this potentially working would be to initiate a filter of some kind that would take a selected object, in this case a gradient mesh, collect all of the x/y coordinates of all of the points into an array. Then, using that array of points, one by one, determining what the visible CMYK values are of the pixel that is below and then setting that point to said colour. Sure, the user would likely have to go back and adjust some points manually here and there where a point is on the edge of a fold between a light and dark area - but I have to think that the bulk of the points would be visually correct on the first pass.
This can't possibly be an insurmountable task? Clearly well beyond my skills but if such a thing could be created it would drastically speed up the illustration process associated with this tool.
Thanks in advance for any thoughts.
    Jeff

...and aside from what Monika said, consider the limitations of transparency handling in web image formats as well as what impact the differences in handling of transparancies between browsers may have on the web site design.

  • Illustrator CS2 error message : Can't open the illustration : The illustration contains an incomplet

Is there something which is done wrong in illustrator to get this message ?
What can prevent this to happen, because unable to open the document, the document is blank when opened ?
    Thanks in advance !

We have tried both saving the files on our company server and on our individual desktops - neither of which will open the files.
Fonts are ok - they are all created and saved in CS6.
Printers, I believe are all correctly set up.
We tried a complete reinstall on one PC - still running into the same random files ending up 'lost' with the same error message.
Originally, the cs6 design standards (6 licenses total) were loaded to the server/shared drive and then downloaded onto each PC from there - we believe this may have something to do with the corruption, but this problem has just begun within the last month and the programs were all downloaded over 6 months ago.

  • Illustrator cs2 creates pdf with anomalies

I have Illustrator cs2 (12.0.1) and I create pdfs with it and send these to my clients for proofing. When I view the pdf in acrobat standard 6 it looks fine. When my sales people and clients view it in reader 8 they get a color break down that is incorrect. For example they see a color that should not be there (in the pdf below it is the blue cyan in the logo). So I need to figure out how to fix this problem. Also it does not happen on every pdf.
here is a link to a pdf
    www.ebfchurch.org/usb3.pdf
In the link is a pdf that has a problem, and a jpeg to show what it should look like.
When I save the pdf I have tried turning illustrator off ill. editing capabilities and saved as a V.7 pdf. Not sure what else to try besides making the logo a jpg. Would upgrading to reader 8 help? Would this add that to my selections in illustrator?
The other anomalies are I's and some lines becoming a dotted line. This one is rarer and is easy to fix (somewhat). I simply rotate the object by a super small portion that no one would notice.
    Thanks for any help.

Most likely some color separation or transparency flattening thing. Could also be the order of your groups/ shapes. Just hard to tell. For testing, I would save a PDF and do a preflight check in Acrobat or other such tool. This usually reveals any problematic stuff...

  • How to create a grid based gradient in Illustrator

I created this randomly degenerating "bitmap" gradient by hand in Illustrator. I want to replicate the effect to fill different sized spaces, but not have to do it by hand every time. Any ideas?

    Here's one way:
    1. Create a 20-pixel tall grayscale file
    2. Select the Gradient tool and set the mode to Dissolve
    3. Drag a black-to-transparent gradient across the canvas, repeating as necessary to get the density you want
    4. Enlarge 2000% or so using Nearest Neighbor interpolation
    5. Save the file, place it in Illustrator, and use Image Trace on it

  • Draw line in illustrator cs2

    hi,
i am new to adobe illustrator cs2.
is there any other method to draw line other than s
    setEntirePath().
    thanks in advance,

    Hello David,
It sounds to me like you're witnessing the double edged sword of an incredibly sharp display. The contrast and clarity of LCD displays makes it very easy to see razor-thin lines with ultra fine definition, but this comes at a cost.
Font smoothing (a.k.a. font aliasing) is one example of where most LCDs are so sharp that most people prefer to have their text "fuzzed" up a little bit.
A one pixel wide diagonal line is another example that you've discovered - the display is so sharp that there is no blurring around the "steps" of the line. You can see every change in gradient, because as sharp as your CRT might've been, it was blurring the line just slightly - enough to enhance the illusion that your diagonal line was a line rather than a series of adjacent "steps". No software package that I know of has bothered to implement "line smoothing" yet, probably because you need the detail for accuracy when putting lines together.
Sort of related to this, big screen HDTV plasma and LCD monitors look amazing in the store when tuned to an HD station, but most people would be floored if they say how grainy and pixelated a standard cable signal looks on the same display. It's literally like watching an old VHS tape, because the display is so sharp it resolves detail that is invisible on a "lesser" display.
Neat human trick: get used to working with your LCD, and then go back to the CRT if you have a chance. How does the CRT look? I thought I needed glasses the first time I switched back!

  • When I open my Colour Picker, the middle block (which normally shows the colour in a gradient of shades) is just a solid colour depending on which H, S, B, R, G, B I have selected. How do I revert it back to normal?

When I open my Colour Picker, the middle block (which normally shows the colour in a gradient of shades) is just a solid colour depending on which H, S, B, R, G, B I have selected. How do I revert it back to normal?

    Becky,
It seems that  the issue is caused by a corrupt folder called en_US or similar (depending on language) within the Adobe Illustrator 18 Settings folder, see post #7 by Jules in this thread,
    https://forums.adobe.com/thread/1595766
so the solution should be to move or rename that folder (or the whole Adobe Illustrator 18 Settings folder).
You can find the folder in Move the folder (follow the link with that name) with Illy closed.
As a temporary roundabout way, you can select the lower rectangle to the right of the rainbow and DoubleClick to apply that to change the top rectangle and the values: the lower colour is the right one.

  • Yucky colours appearing in gradients

Hi all, I'm hoping someone can help me with this one, this one is just totally unexplicable, I must be doing something wrong, but don't have a clue.
am making an album cover, where the background is a gradient of two colours.  Going from black on one side to dark purple on the other.  Logically, when using the colours black and purple, the gradient would blend the two colours?  No, instead I'm getting some kind of yucky gray'ish brown between the two.  This is like Illustrator is introducing another colour to the gradient.
I thought it may of been the colour pallet I was using, it was Pantone Solid Coated, and I also tried Pantone Processed Coated.  Thinking this was the bane of the issue, I then switched to Pantone Colour Bridge CYMK PC.
The destination for this job is print, so it has to be CYMK.  Unfortunately I don't know how to get rid of these dull yucky tones that appear in my gradients
You'll see the issue in the below screen shot of Illustrator.  A screen shot of the desired effect follows, but was generated in MS Publisher for demonstrating what I was trying to do.
Any help please would be much appreciated.  Thanks

Now one said anything about an opacity mask
And once again you cannot really be disagreeing since you do not understand or refuse to understand what was written.
In CS 5 You have the ability ti set the gradient to different opacities, take another look. I think it is a cleaner way of setting the color for press.
    Here is another screenshot
Now although it is not necessary I think from a production point of view you will get a cleaner output so I disagree with you and I swould siuggest that the Op discuss it with the printer to see what they prefer.

  • Transparent gradient in Keynote?

How does one make a transparent gradient of a shape in Keynote—a shape that is completely opaque on one side and completely transparent on the opposite side?

    Draw then select the shape
Inspector > Format > Style > Fill > Advanced Gradient Fill (the Inspector is the side panel on the right)
Click on one of the two colour fill sliders to show the Colour Wheel
Drag the Opacity slider all the way down
lastly, in the advanced gradient fill, drag the colour fill slider that has the transparency set, drag the slider towards the centre to adjust the opacity from left to right

  • Illustrator CS2 Can't Save EPS Files

I'm running Illustrator CS2 on a PC with Windows XP, and while I can save Illustrator files in AI and PDF formats with no problems, and export files also without problem, when I try to save an EPS file it brings up an alert box that says "Can't save the illustration". For obvious reasons this message is not helpful in determining the problem or going about a solution. I would greatly appreciate any help as this is a problem at my workplace and I have some time sensitive projects I need to finish. Thanks in advance.
