Colour wheel spinning when opening files using finder
Hi all
I am a novice Mac user. I think I was using Mountain Lion (i paid for it - about £20) but upgraded to Mavericks last year when prompted by my software update. I now understand from reading various online posts that this means I am now stuck with it. At first I had lots of problems with PDF files crashing but this has been fixed. Today I am not having a nightmare trying to use Finder. Any time I click on a file or folder the colour wheel spins for about 10-20 seconds. This happens for every command I make. I just tried to access my files directly from the desktop and the same thing happened. I am not sure what to do and I dont want to end up deleting something important! I have a dissertation due on friday and the search function on Finder is badly needed to help me finish up my referencing. Can anyone help this IT inept student out? I tried to book a genius bar apt but they have nothing free til next week!
Cheers

Reproducable program locks when opening files using finders "Today" filter
Hi,
I am experiencing lockups (have to force quit the programs - which works) in different software products when I try to open files using the "Today" smartfilter from finder / the open dialogue. This wil happen when I attach files to websites using a file-input in Safari as well as with Photoshop just to name an example. It happens every time. Don't know why - and sure, I can avoid using a workflow like this - but I think this is not normal.
Anyone else experiencing these problems? Seems to be related to snow leopard since I do not remember having had these issues in the past.
The filetype does not seem to matter. It happened with PDF's, Jpg's, PSD's, etc.
Message was edited by: jmuellerRollingRocker, did you ever get a solution for this? I am having the same problem. I produce a pdf using a JSF third party api called flying saucer, which actually uses itext to produce the pdf. I can attempt to produce the same exact pdf over and over and about 85% of the time the error occurs and the rest of the time the pdf opens successfully with no error. Obviously 15% of the time the reader is completely happy with this pdf, so it is not a malicious document in any way.

Error when opening files using SMB server
I’m trying to download files using a Windows SMB server, but it does not work properly. I'm using a VPN connection to access the server. I already added smb protocol in my system preferences (using 'more internet'), but when I’m trying to open a file, the following error message (code 36) appears:
The Finder cannot complete the operation because some of the data in smb://........ could not be read or written.
The Console gives the following error message:
mount_smbfs: can't get server address `……:
Unknown host
mount_smbfs: can't get server address: syserr = Network is down
Does anyone know how to solve thed error? Thanx in advance!
iBook G4 Mac OS X (10.4)This has been bugging me. Typically, the FileOpenClient error would include the name of the "client" referenced by the FileOpenClient parameter in the ditafm.ini file (I don't think it really does anything, but that's not the point). In this case it's not indicating the name of the client. After some testing it looks like FM10 (probably FM9 as well) prints this error along with the message about being unable to open a file. I have a feeling that it's just a bogus error message. However, the message about being unable to open the file is real.
Note that there is a difference between being unable to "open" of "locate" a file .. you'll see different messages in each condition. This (and the message from M_Boyd) are "open" errors. Off hand I don't know why. Try manually opening the file specified and see if you get any errors. I've not been able to replicate the "open" error (just a "locate" error) even when I corrupt the target file so it is invalid XML. When I do this, the xref does not properly resolve, and it *does* add significant time to the time it takes to open the referencing file .. but I'm not getting any errors written to the console for this .. strange.
Also note that the error says "Unable to resolve link" .. this means a "link" element is the referencing element, as opposed to an "xref". If it was an xref it would say "Unable to resolve xref".
Bottom line .. don't worry about the FileOpenClient error .. I think it's just bogus. But there is some reason that FM isn't able to open your referenced files. I'd strip out all of the references and start over with just one .. make sure it works before adding more. The simpler you can keep the directory structure the better.

Freehand crashes in Snow Leopard when opening files
If you have the problem of Freehand MX etc crashing when opening files in Snow Leopard then this is for you.
In the Freehand application folder is a application callled (Freehand Clip Art Viewer) open this and use it to navigate to you file location, have Freehand open. Then just double click on the thumbnail of your file and it will open without any crash report.
Would pay to add this to the dock beside the Freehand Icon.
After an hour on the phone help desk advised me that freehand has been upgraded to Illustrator... Some people dont want this and i hope its helps a few hardcore Freehand nutters :-)Thanks for the tip. I'll add another.
I've come across a few old-version FH files with missing fonts that would crash FH.
I use FontAgent Pro, with auto-activation turned on, as my font manager. Usually there's no problem. FAP activates unactivated fonts and the file opens properly.
However, I think that Snow Leopard sometimes incorrectly deals with font info in old FH files, and this can lead to a crash.
I find that if I open the FontAgent Pro application window first, and then open the problem file in FH, there's no crash. I get Freehand's 'missing font' dialog and am able to select an alternate font. -
Crashing in PS CS and Quark when opening files over network
Mac Pro and MacBook Pro 10.4.8 using Adobe Photoshop CS2 and Quark 6.52 will crash or become VERY unstable when opening files from server or remote machine. Server is 10.3.9 or remote Mac running 10.4.7, all works fine IF file are copied to client machine, but cannot use -File/Open dialog. This is a network isue in relation to Intel translation, is there a fix (Rosetta?)
Try looking for some "special" characters in file or folder names ( e.g. / or ?).
I had similar problems with PPC-Apps (InDesign CS2 and 4D Client 2003) since 10.4.7 and 10.4.8. App crashes or shows strange grey boxes on the screen when I tried to open files over the network, no probs with same files locally.

CS Bridge when opening file shows " Some Application Components are missing from Application Directory- Reinstall". Uninstalled with uninstaller, reinstalled from disc. Message continues only in Bridge not in PS. Please help.
What version of Bridge and Photoshop and what platform? Mac or Windows? I can point you to a downloadable installer.
If the cdrom was damaged, it may be the problem.
You would uninstall and use the CC/CS Cleaner to remove any remnants before reinstalling.
Use the CC Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems | CC, CS3-CS6
I'll be gone for most of the day, but someone should be able to help you if you get stuck.

Scenario:
In Windows 8.1, it is to display volumes under This PC by default when opening File Explorer, which is as shown in Figure1. However, in Windows 10 Technical Preview, it is not to display volumes under Home by default when
opening File Explorer, which is as shown as in Figure 2. This articles describes a workaround to get volumes displayed by default under
Home when opening File Explorer in Windows 10 Technical Preview.
Workaround:
This workaround is to edit some related Registry keys. Note: Please click
Yes in the User Account Control prompt to continue. What’s more, before you make changes to a registry key or subkey, we recommend that you export, or make a backup copy, of the key or subkey. In this scenario, please backup the key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer.
Click Windows icon and type Folder option in Search box, and click
Folder option to open it.
Under View tab, clear the checkbox Hidden extensions for known file types
in Advanced settings.
Create a Text Document, copy the following lines into it, rename it as
Fix.reg. Double click the file fix.reg and click Yes to run this file

Open File Explorer again, and the new view is shown as the below picture:
Please click to vote if the post helps you. This can be beneficial to other community members reading the thread.i think what he want is to change the Win + E shortcut to This PC.
I understand that is the goal. I've tried the registry hack, it works, but I found it left fragments of other files from "Home' scatter around in there too. We all been using this new version of windows for a few weeks now, built up a list of stuff
we have looked at, and that is why I said it's not the prettiest solution. It might have been okay if it was done just after a fresh install. In my alternative solution, you are bringing the This PC icon out to a more accessible place so you
don't have to use the File Explorer icon to get at the volumes i.e. hard drive view.
Personally, when I launch the File Explorer, I am expecting to be looking for something straight away on my hard drives and not be presented with a list of stuff that I have already looked at. That kind of thing should be left
in a Recent Folder sort of thing we use to see in the older versions of windows. -
CS6 DW hanging when opening files - Windows 8.1 running MS Defender
When opening files in CS6 DW it sometimes hangs for up to 4 minutes before opening the files.
Also, CS6 DW and Fireworks crash frequently on my PC.
I'm running Windows 8.1, MS Defender and my PC is a Pentium i7 with 8GB of RAM
Any ideas what I can do to stop these things happening? It's really starting to impact on the productivity of my day.You seem to be implying that when you switch off MS Defender, it works?
If not, we'll need a little more info.
Does the hang happen with all files in all sites, or just certain files?
If it happens with just certain files, could you please share the code to one of those files? A link to an online page would be best, but pasting the code into the forum can also help, just don't use email to send the code to the forum, that won't work.
Have you tried any of the standard troubleshooting steps as of yet (Deleting Program Cache, Restoring Preferences, Cleaner Tool Reinstall)? -
Hi community,
I’m using Mac OS X 10.9.5 with InDesign CC 9.2.2.
When open files (local or network) in InDesign the CPU Usage increase to 100% and will start to hanging after 5-6 documents.
Can anyone confirm the problem or has a solution?
ThanksI can confirm this behaviour, but it is (usually) not a problem and has a pretty normal reason.
Does this also happen with other software and files from the HDD/network?
Did it happen before, like it was always this way, or just recently? If so, what did you change?
Will the 100% CPU usage remain or sink after the file is completely loaded?
"After (opening) 5-6 documents" means opened "all at once" or "subsequent"? If all at once, how much RAM do you have and is there enough space left on the HDD for cache?
Is preflight activated?
Do the documents have broken cross-refs to other documents?
What means "hanging"? Hanging like "for a while" or like "forever"? -
Dreamweaver very slow when opening files with external links
Is there any way to fix Dreamweaver CS5 (Windows 7, 64bit) when opening files with external references?
For example, I have a very simple CSS file, and toward the top the file has a line that says:
@import url("https://fonts.googleapis.com/css?family=Ubuntu:500,700");
This causes the file to take around 20 seconds to open in DW. If I comment out the line or remove it, the file opens almost instantly. This behaviour is also present in files that contain an SSI.
DW often crashes before being able to open the file and I need to restart the app.
Can I disable DW from attempting to load the references?? It's obviously what is causing the issue IMO and would love to make DW workable again!"Enable Related Files" isn't the fix for this issue. It's slightly different - I wanted to still load related files, but only the ones local to the file I was editing.
The fix was to use DW's Resolve To IP Address feature. It required adding a registry value - it fixed the issue straight away
This Adobe support doc helped: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/887/cpsid_88742.html -
Need help. I am running a 27 in imac with 16 gigs of ram. Photoshop runs really fast, except when opening files. It takes 5-10 minutes to open even a small file of 1 meg. I cleaned and validated all the fonts and removed all questionable fonts. Reset preferences and still have problem. Slow to open and in force quit "Photoshop not responding" At this point should I uninstall and start over.
What are the performance Preferences?

Preview When opening files not showing up in PS6!
Hi,
I've recently upgraded from Photoshop 5 to Photoshop 6. When opening files in PS5 a preview was available when selecting PSDs and image files.
This made it extremely easy to view files and PSD's without having to fully open them. But this feature is not showing up in PS6.
I'm not sure if this is actually an Adobe problem but I appreciate any and all help.
Here is an attached image to help understand - http://i.imgur.com/2v862OD.png
