  • How do I get a black and white photo in Photoshop Elements 11?

I have a very old version of Photoshop, release 6 I believe.  In that release, I am able to use enhance/brightness and contrast, and when I slide the contrast to 100%, I get a pure black and white image of my photo.  I Photoshop 11, which I just purchased today, I am unable to get a pure black and white image, only grayscale.  I cut pictures out of wood, and it's fundamentally necessary that I can contrast pictures into pure black and white.  How do I do that in Photoshop 11?  The first screenshot is what I need in Photoshop 11, the second screen shot is the limitation I'm seeing in Photoshop 11.  How do I get a black and white photo??

(I edited this reply because I originally couldn't see the screen shots.)
There was a change made a few versions ago where Brightness and Contrast were improved so that they did not clip values so quickly. This was intended to improve how Brightness and Contrast worked for photographs, but it makes it work less well for purposes such as channel manipulations or printmaking.
In Photoshop there is a Legacy check box in Brightness/Contrast to make it work the "old" way when that is desired. It looks like that check box isn't in Photoshop Elements, which is what you're actually using. I'm not sure if there is a way to get the Legacy behavior in Elements, so you'll want to ask over in the Photoshop Elements forum.

  • Wrong green tone on black and white photos in Photoshop / Windows 7

I have a problem when using photoshop CS5. When I open the photo in the editing area - it has a little green tone. When I save for web the same photo become real black and white without a green tone:

When I open the same photo on the web at 500px in Internet Explorer it is in real black and white without a green tone. If I open the same page in Firefox or Chrome it has the same green tone as in Photoshop

I have looked at the settings on my Windows laptop (with no problems) and made the same settings, but it does not help. I have tried to change nearly everything in the settings.

  • Adding color to a black and white photo

I've searched everywhere on here and on Youtube and can't seem to find how I can add color to a black and white photo using Aperture 3 that was taken in black and white.

Hi, and welcome to the list. Make sure you read the [Help & Terms of Use|http://discussions.apple.com/help.jspa] section when you get a chance.
It's not a good idea to insert a new question into someone else's post. First as you are not the originator of the post you can not assign solved or helpful ratings to any answers you get here. And the forum really relies on those to help other users locate meaningful responses.
Secondly your question is less likely to get answered. readers of the post will be looking to either give advice on the original question or else be looking for answers to the question. A new question stuck in between the other replies is less likely to be noticed. It's always best to start a new thread and if something in another post applies you can always link to it.
Now to your question. There was a great solution given to your very problem back a little while ago, see: [Topic : Black, white, and color?|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=12805425&#12805425]

  • Can't select colours to colorise a black and white photo.

    Hi,
I am trying to colorise an old black and white photo, and I am unable to use any colours that are not black, white or grey for some reason. I select light blue to fill the sky, but it wont actually select it and stays grey. How do I fix this?
    Thanks!

If you look at the document tab, I'll bet it's Grayscale/8.  You would want RGB/8.
Image menu > mode > RGB

  • Black and white photo shows up as a colour photo in iPhoto

    Hi all,
Can someone please solve this mystery for me?
I took a black and white photo with my Nikon D40. It appears as black and white when I play it back in the camera.
When I transferred this black and white photo, along with other colour photos, to iPhoto, it showed up as a colour photo on my computer.
    Why is this?
    Thanks for any insight...

    Lutetia
You didn't take a black and white photograph. Your D40 can't take a black and white photo, it can only take full colour. To make the photo look black and white the D40 set a flag on the file. This flag is an instruction: display me a certain way. iPhoto is not aware of the flag and so shows you the full colour pic.

  • Adding color to an object in a black and white photo

Can someone please help? I just bought Aperture and I was wondering if it is possible to add color to an object in a black and white photo? or keep an object in color and turn the rest of the picture into black and white?
    Thanks

    Hi
I am 90% sure this cannot be specifically done in Aperture as it can in Photoshop.
I assume you mean adding spot colour to a B&W photograph.
You can choose an external editor such as Photoshop, if you have it, create the effect, and re-import the image back into Aperture.
There are some powerful colour controls for selectively improving colour in a photo within Aperture. Whereby you can make a particular colour stand out more by selectively adjusting the red, blue, cyan, magenta, yellow colour's. These are accessed via the colour controls in the adjustments inspector.
You can create B&W images with two tones (of your choice) by using the Monochrome mixer ( in the adjustments panel )
Or you can create colour monochrome effects by using the colour monochrome effects slider ( in the adjustments panel, where you see a + sign with a downward pointing arrow ) click the arrow and select "colour monochrome" from the menu, it will appear at the bottom of the adjustments panel.
Give some of these a go..... play around with it, you can get some stunning result's..........
    Hope this helps some.......

  • Hp photsmart 309a black and white photos print purple

When I print black and white photos they have a very purple tint. Any suggestions?

If Photoshop manages color, you need to pick the correct profile for the printer/paper. The profile will be called something like e.g. <printer name> Epson Premium Glossy, if that's the paper you're using.

  • How do i colorize a black and white photo?

I have an old black and white photo of a family member I would like to colorize. how is this done? ? I am new to photoshop.

Is this a scanned image? If you have a grayscale image you have to do it manually using a brush tool and choosing colors with the color picker.
If the image was originally RGB and converted to B&W then it’s possible to use:
    Enhance >> Adjust Color >> Hue/Saturation
There is a colorize checkbox and you can simply adjust the sliders for an overall color change.

  • Black and White photo with splash of color

I just bought photoshop elements yesterday. I'm completely new to this and I want to know how to make a photo turn b/w, but keep a point of color,ex: a red hair bow but everything else b/w.

Another way is to create a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer over your photo. (It's one of the choices that is found on your layer's pallet under the black and white icon.) This will create an adjustment that can be masked.
Double click the adjustment layer with "Master" selected and move the saturation slider to -100. Once this is done you can use the paint brush to paint back color. (Black hides the adjustment; white reveals the adjustment; shades of gray provide a partial adjustment.)
I think the mask option is preferable to using the eraser because you can easily go back and refine the image if you make a mistake. It also gives you the opportunity to change your mind without having to start from scratch. Another advantage is that your image will have a smaller file size.
You can also use filters that work in gray scale on the mask. One useful one is Gaussian Blur. I like to paint my selection edges with a hard edged brush then soften (feather) the edges with the Gaussian filter. The Maximum and Minimum filters are useful if you need to expand or contract the mask edge a little.
If you want to have more control over the black and white adjustment, use the pull down menu in the Hue/Saturation adjustment dialog to select each color; reduce each of the colors to -100 Saturation; then go back and adjust the "lightness" slider of each color to taste.

  • Black and white photo prints with purple cast

I used Photoshop to convert the digital photos to black and white before placing them in Indesign CS3. On the monitor the photo looks great, but when I print the newsletter, each photo has a purple tint. What am I doing wrong? Thanks.

    Polly,
your black and white photos are probably 'Grayscales'.
The print has a tint because it is printed by rich black
CMYK instead of K-only, and the printer is not perfectly
calibrated or not calibrated at all.
a)It is a PostScript printer and it was chosen
    Output=CompositeRGB instead of CompositeCMYK or
CompositeGray (CompositeCMYK is necessary if the
doc contains Grayscales and color images).
Composite### doesn't mean the source but the printer.
PostScript toner printers and inkjets are CMYK devices.
Desktop printers are often considered as RGB devices.
b)The Grayscale was converted back to RGB (still gray though).
c)The Grayscale was converted to CMYK, which delivers in
Photoshop by default rich black CMYK.

  • How do I add selective color to black and white photo?

New to Photoshop Elements 12.  How do I add selective color to a black and white photo?

The easiest way is to use the Smart Brush tool in Expert tab.
On the tool's option bar, in the drop-down select "Revers Effects", then select the "Reverse" option. Be sure that "Inverse" is ticked.
Paint over the object that is to retain color, the rest will become b/w.

  • Determining colors in a black and white photo

I don't know if Photoshop can do this, but I really need to bring color to a black and white photo. I'm not looking to add color by imagining or guessing; I need to find out the actual colors. Is this possible? If photoshop can't do it but another program can, please let me know.
    Thank you.

Just for interest sake, make a screen grab of your swatch panel, and paste it into a new Photoshop document.  Add a B&W adjustment layer, and have a think about what colour each shade of grey represents.  You can turn the B&W adjustment layer off and on again to help you along.

  • Colorizing an original black and white photo

Is there a way (kinda simple) to turn a black and white photo (never in color) into a color photo ? The desaturate / history thing won't, of course, work.
    Thanks!

Think of using Layers and setting their Blending Mode to Color. You can go a bit bolder in the painting, and then lower Opacity, as is required, but I would go for the tint that you want to start.
You can probably use the existing Channel to create Masks, along with QuickMask, and these can be applied as Layer Masks to each color section.
It seems that I saw an article by Katrin Eismann on "hand tinting." Maybe in Photoshop User magazine? I also think that MyJanee had a tutorial, though it would have been for an earlier version - should work fine in later versions.
Good luck. It's fun to do, but does take a bit of hand-work. Almost any variation on Colorize will probably yield garish results.

  • Colouring Black and White video images

My son (14 years) has just found an interest in colouring black and white film footage and is finding it a very pain staking process. I am looking to assist him with some software to make the process easier but don't really know where to start him off. I am currently using Photoshop elements and Lightroom myself for the  restoration of old Black and White still images, but he is looking to work with video files. Is anyone able to provide some advice as to where top start and which Adobe applications may suit this. I appreciate any input.
