Column view going nuts

Hi there!
I'm having an annoying problem with my Finder.
When I have it in Column View and click on any item, any proceeding preview windows extend very far. Even if I shorten the windows manually, they don't seem to lock and they keep opening up very wide. It gets very annoying.
I hope that makes sense. Thanks!

You could try selecting the "option" key and then adjusting the column width. This works for me. I am using 10.4.9. These widths will lock to the size you select, and will be global, even after a restart. I have been using this setup for some time, and it seems to work fine. And you can always resize the columns, if you so choose.

  • FINDER NOT SHOWING DIMENSIONS WIDTH OR HEIGHT....IN COLUMN VIEW OR ICONVIEW

I have noticed for the last couple of weeks that my finder no longer shows the width and Height of images or anything. Dimensions has -- on all things. I have never encountered this issue before.
I hit "show item info" It looks like it moves when I check the box in thumbnail mode, but there is nothing there.
I have google'd around and have yet to find a solution.
Would be much appreciated if someone could point me in the right direction.

These files are EPS files not image files. They have a TIF or PICT preview inside the file, I believe in the resource or data fork of the file. The file extension is EPS, and I cannot change that, just type the letters. The actual extension, the 4 digit one, that is invisible is the one that is important. In the case of EPS the actual extension is EPSF or EPSI.
Just to try the fix I changed the name and it did try to make a preview, but it came up with nothing. It was blank in column view. The OS still reads it as an EPS regardless of the change in file extension.
Anyone have some answer that involves a command line, I think that is really going to be the only thing that solves this one.

  • I can no longer get the column view since installing 12.0.1.26.

I can no longer get the column view since installing 12.0.1.26. The only thing my iTunes for PC will not display the column view of songs any more  The only thing I have access to is the view that displays the album covers. I used the Help function, followed the procedure several times.  When I click on the music icon, the icon flashes, but does not bring up a menu as shown in the "help" file.

    1) reset the iPad. Hold power home button until screen goes black, apple logo appears-release
    2) delete the app, reinstall.
    3) wait for an update to the app

  • Finder "column" view no longer previews ".iff"s

Sorry if this is the wrong forum (is there no Shake forum????).... is Apple going to kill Shake?
So I upgraded from 10.3.6 to 10.4.2 ..... now the ".iff" files (when in column view) no longer show the image in the preview window... it is now an icon??? why is this... does Apple not support native Shake images in 10.4.2 (it did in 10.3.6)?

  • Finder does not show EPS PICT or TIF previews in column view in 10.4

It seems in the upgrade between 10.3 and 10.4 they dropped the ability to see the low res PICT or TIF image that is stored in the EPS file. In other apps, InDesign, Quark I can see it in column view open dialogue box but no such luck with Finder windows.
I have seen the question on a few other forums but there has been no satisfactory answer to this question. I can't just use AI files and make them PDF compatible either, which is what I have been hearing as a common workaround. As of now I have been using EPSwizard:
    http://www.jolauterbach.com
It used to be free but now it is a pay version. If anyone wants the older free app reply to me and I can give it to you. It is a decent solution until I can find someone who knows how to tweak the finder to see these again.
My best guess that Mac didn't want to show a low res image in their pretty OS so they deep 6'ed it in the 10.4 version. I am pretty sure that it is just not reading the resource/data fork where that image is contained. It would make my life so much more enjoyable if I didn't need to load an app everytime I want to see what an EPS file looks like inside.
If anyone can clue me in on a tutorial on how to change this let me know.

  • Column view and the Grabber bars

I can't seem to find out "why," but when I open windows in column view in Mountain Lion (and this happened in Lion too), "sometimes" the grabber bar at the bottom (used to size/widen a particular column) is there in all windows, and sometimes the column is just a line with no grabber bars.
When it is a line, I can still size the column by putting my mouse arrow on the line (and the widening arrows appear) and moving it left or right, but I prefer to have the grabber bars at the bottom.
I never know when it is going to change from one way to the other, or how long it will stay the way it is.  Sometimes one of the two ways stays a week or two, or just a few days, then magically just changes up on me.
Anyone  have any clue "why" this keeps changing back and fourth for me?
    Thanks in advance
    Lou

No idea why this setting would keep changing back and forth for you, but thought I'd chime in after my search to get those little grabber bars to show up at all.
If you haven't already, check the following:
Go to System Preferences, under Personal click the General icon/settings. Under Show scroll bars: choose the Always radio button setting.
My grabber bars had disappeared for reasons I can't explain. So far, after setting Show scroll bars to Always, they've stayed visible.
Until Apple enables a Finder window's ability to ALWAYS/AUTOMATICALLY/DEFAULT to auto-adjust it's column width to "Right Size" to the longest file name WHENEVER a new directory/window is opened or browsed this will be my preferred setting. Since you have to right-click, double click, option-click, again and again and again and again, I like the bigger target.
    Good luck.

  • Column View won't display some images downloaded by browser

I have used the "Preview" in Column View to display images for some time and some images downloaded to folders will never display. The wheel just spins in the display area and CMD-i doesn't display the image either. If I open the image in the Preview application it displays! There is no detectable difference in the files that do and don't display in Col. View. I can get any image to show up by opening a graphic application and doing a "Save As" to reprocess the image and replace the balky one. But, this is not right that I should have to do this. I cannot determine whether a downloded image is going to have a problem or not as some from the same websites are OK sometimes and some are not. I had the problem with OS 10.2.8 too. Changing from iCab to Safari does not help.

ACK!!!! Cancel all that because it happens using Firefox too. I have NO IDEA what in the world is happening to my system that would cause web pages to load incompletely.
    What a drag.

  • Can't get folders to stay in column view... pulling hair out!!!

It doesn't matter what finder view options I set, they work for 1 or 2 times opening a finder window in column view, then goes back to the icon view. I hate icon view!!! What is the ridiculous deal with this and how can something so chump-change, penny-ante as keeping a simple folder view preference be so ridiculous as to migrate from one version of OSX to the next!?!?? At least there was an app in 10.4 that was in Utilities that you could log in as root, reset the windows the way you wanted and then log back out. Ridiculous that you had to do that kludge, but it worked... but I can't find that application anymore in Leopard... arghhh! Wow, I feel a bit better to have vented Can anyone help me fix this so I can always have Column view as the default... and possible save my sanity in the process?

Does this KBase article still apply?
Mac OS X: How to Save a Finder View (Column, Icon, or List) for a Specific Folder or Disk
It appears the Finder only keeps the desired setting if set on a newly opened window. If the folder was navigated to within the window and the setting is changed, that setting is temporary. So you need to (temporarily) set the Finder to open folders in a new window (Finder Preferences) so any window you navigate to is a new window, a "starting point". Then you can actually save that folder's setting. Note you can leave the "Show View Options" window open as you change between windows and it relates to the active window. Once all your desired folders are set, you can uncheck to open folders in new windows.
I usually navigate in column view and of course clicking through folders in column view is not the same as opening a new window so I had to create aliases of some folders to test with but this worked for me.
(hmm, further testing, they seem to keep for me even when set by navigating to it within a window.... but this might be worth a try)

  • Finder doesn't remember (always view in column view"

When i click on macintosh HD on my desktop, it always opens in icon view. I want to open it in column view, but it always opens in icon view. I go to "show view options" and deselect "always open in icon view", which then changes to "always open in colum view" which i then click.
The, if my macbook goes to sleep or turns off, when i restart it, it opens again in icon view. nothing major, but soooo annoying!
Any ideas? When i click finder in the dock it remembers to view things in column view, but not the macintosh HD from desktop

I do not have the solution because I checked my hard drive icons in the desktop and they open in column view in Finder as I would like them to. In FINDER:VIEW:SHOW VIEW OPTIONS I have all three options clicked on the bottom (SHOW ICON, SHOW ICON PREVIEW, SHOW PREVIEW COLUMN). The option on the top says ALWAYS IN COLUMN VIEW which is unchecked even if I check it. So maybe it is a bug.

  • Column view not Icon View?

This is most annoying. Every time I restart or startup my Mac Pro and I open my MacHD, the default Icon view appears. Once I have the MacHD window open, if I click on View/Show View Options I can click off "Always show in iCon View". Then I change the view to Columns and, under View/Show View Options I click on "Always show in column view". This works until I need to restart or shutdown and startup. Then it goes back to the default Icon view.
*How can I get this option to always show the column view after a restart or startup?*

Easy enough to do that (at least in Tiger):
When I first got it, I did click on the HD icon and then proceeded to drag the applications I frequently use, important folders, etc. into the dock. I organized the applications by "type", i.e. all web stuff together (browsers, Mail, etc), word processing, movie making related, photo related, utilities (Onyx, Disk Utility, Super Duper, etc). My important folders (to the right of the dock separator) all have custom icons for easy identification. All in all, I have 63 small icons in the dock (I just counted them!), set to magnify when I mouse over them and I've done it this way for so long that I pretty much know where a particular icon is located.
You might to give it a try - it should work in Leopard?
I use a similar idea. It is called DockFun! It provides me with unlimited number of docks. Each one is categorized like your folders. I still find that sometimes when I save a file or move a file(s) from one place to another and, with my feeble memory, forget where it is or the name I used (more often than I care to admit!) , like to search folders by opening the HD via column view.
Back to the problem - I even tried it in "Safe" mode but I got the same results. Here's another oddity.
The setting on my MacBook Pro, with the same OS 10.5.6, works perfectly. If I set the view to column view it remains in column view. Very Strange!!
*Any friendly geeks out there that can maybe provide me with a Terminal command or two that will do the trick?*

  • Column view jump-back

When copying files to another drive using spring loaded folders and column view the view snaps back to the root of the target volume. Seems like it only happens when the source object is selected from the same or a finder window.
    Please check attached screen recording:
    http://www.terning.net/finderbugs/column_viewjump-back.mov
This bug has been around for a while. Maybe even back in 10.4.x. Don't remember exactly. I have done an erase and install of OS X (for other reasons) and the problem still persists.
Can you reproduce this bug as well?

Yes, I've seen that. I'm pretty sure its a bug. I'd suggest going to bugreport.apple.com and letting Apple know about it. Make sure you include the steps to reproduce, as well as a link to the movie you have made (or attach it to the bug report). Good luck...

  • Sort-by-type for column view in open/save dialog boxes?

    Hello all,
I've done a fairly good search both on Google and in these forums and can't seem to find this question addressed. When I go to open or save something (in Preview, for example) I prefer to use Column View in the dialog box, since it is easy to see and navigate the folder structure. However, Column View always shows up sorted by name, even if I specified in Finder that the folder be sorted by type. Because of this, I have to scroll down and hunt for subfolders rather than having them conveniently listed at the top.
My question is this: is there a way to get Column View to sort by type in the open/save dialog boxes? (The Command+J that works in regular Finder does nothing in these dialog boxes.)
    Thanks!

No. Column view will only sort by name. If you wanted to put a space before each folder name, then they will sort to the top. Sorting by Kind will put folders above files, but it will also put anything else except files at the top. If there are only folders, however, that would put them first in the sort list.
