Column view in Smart Folders

This is just a comment but does anyone agree that Smart folders would really benefit from a column view. I realise that it probably breaks some basic user interface rules (though what's the difference between using search results & an alias as a starting point? neither of them indicate the 'real' file structure) but I think that it would be really useful to be able to browse directly from this view in the finder (like you can in the save dialogue).
Also, when dragging files around in the finder in column view, it would be nice if, when moving into an alias the finder didn't jump around to show the alias's original folder-its very disorientating, and it doesn't behave in this way when you're moving through the filing system normally...
Sorry, just some bugbears..

Hi
I see what you mean, and it's a nice idea, (I use column wiew for everything, so I'm all for it) but it would mean basically reprogramming most of the Smart Folder code.
Smart Folders aren't really folders. They are just dynamically self-updating saved spotlight searches that Finder can interact with. In short, they are just special files, not folders. To make them into folders Apple would have to make some ridiculously complicated code to make a normal folder integrate with Spotlight, so it might be a while before this gets high on their priority list.
Hope I explained something!

  • Enable Smart Views or Smart Folders in Reminders

I used Reminders to keep track of all my tasks across Mac OS X and my iOS devices. To manage the large number of reminders I have in there, it would be great to have a new feature for "Smart Views" or "Smart Folders" that allow you to see those tasks from different views, e.g.:
    - by due date (e.g. all overdue tasks, tasks due this month)
    - by flag (e.g. Urgent, Important, Unimportant)
    - by priority (High, Medium, Low)
At the moment, the workaround is to create different reminder lists, which is cumbersome and only enables one perspective per task, not multiple.

My guess is that Boolean Search will disappear from all Apple apps.
Notes for Apple Mountain Lion and iCloud are an indication. The iOS app is capable of boolean search, not the versions for iCloud and OS X 10.8, however.
The new iWork for iCloud and Mavericks is another indication. I have a guess as to what the cause could be: Boolean Search is not possible with JavaScript. Something that is not possible with iCloud in a webbrowser by JavaScript will disappear from iOS and OS X.
As well as the practical smart folders that exist nowhere except in Apple Mail.
A sharp step backwards, not to achieve simple operation, but due to technical limitations of a programming language.

  • Viewing different smart folders

Is it possible to view two different smart folders (drawing pics from various projects) simultaneously, as you can projects?
    Thanks

Yes. Select one, and then option click the other. See "Working With Multiple Browsers" here:
    http://www.bagelturf.com/aparticles/workspace/workmulb/index.html
It's handy to have one smart album with one rating and another with the opposite. Then as you rerate images they "jump" from one pane to the other.

  • Column view not peristent in mail smart folders

I use a smart folder which displays multiple actual folders; I enable the mailbox column, but as soon as I move to another folder and back, the column becomes disabled.
I assume from some other old messages that this is the intended default behavior and not a bug. Does anyone know whether there is a way to ensure persistent column settings, and if not, if this is a planned fix for the next version of mail.app?
    Thanks very much.
(searching: persistent column views in mail; View > Columns > Mailbox)

I'd love to know too, but can't seem to find out how.
This seems like a major oversight/quirk.
I have to adjust the column widths often -- otherwise they bounce back.
I have this in the Inbox, not just Smart Folders.

  • Can I add/show a size column for smart folders?

I've created a set of smart folders to filter the files on my system by size (e.g. <10megs, 10-499megs, 500-999megs and >1Gig.
What I'd like to do is sort the files by size, so having the folder show a size column would be great... however it doesn't seem to be possible (or the how is not publicized). It just shows name, kind and last opened. If I change the view to ICON, I can get the size for some files, but others, like movies or music, show their duration, not size.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks
    Gary

If you want to report this to Apple, send a bug report (or enhancement request) via its Bug Reporter system. Join the Apple Developer Connection (ADC)—it's free and available for all Mac users and gets you a look at some development software. Since you already have an Apple username/ID, use that. • Mail and Smart Folders losing column show and hide settings - a fix?

Lately I switched my mail to be hosted by google and so in order for my in and out boxes to contain my current and older messages, I have each set as Smart Folders. It's this difference that I think might be making this bug worse.
Previous to this change I'd noticed Mail forgets which columns I have shown and what order they're in between quitting and relaunching.. but now with the smart folders, the column settings will be lost when I'm merely not paying attention to Mail (when it's hidden or in the background).
This is particularly irritating since I always use Mail with two view windows, one showing my inbox and the other showing my sent messages. What seems to be happening most is that if I have my inbox showing From and To, that setting will bleed over to the sent window.. showing me that all my sent messages are, of course, From me. I hide that column and later on it comes back by itself. Either that, or I hide the From column in Sent and later on I lose the From column in the Inbox.

    Hobyx,
Wow this thread really is a little stale. Sorry about that. What it sounds like to me is the preferences file is going bad, you could try removing com.apple.mail.plist. Found in Macintosh HD -> Users -> YOUR USERS -> Library -> Preferences. Please note that you will have to add your Gmail account back in. But any emails/smart folders on your Mac wont be removed by deleting that plist.
Also On the Gmail side you will get significant better results if you select the corresponding folder in your gmail account 'Found in the sidebar' and select Mailbox -> Use this Mailbox for -> and select what your using for. Whilst using the imap setup.
    Hope that helps,

  • Is there a way to set the FOLDERS window in Adobe Bridge as a Column view?

  • Cannot rename folders in SMB share using Column view

I connect to an Ubuntu SMB server and files and folder access worked perfectly under 10.5.8.
I upgraded to Snow Leopard and a curious thing happends. I set CHMOD of the main folder to 777. I can create and rename folders in this first level but if I am in column view, I can create a folder (untitled folder) but can't rename it.
If I move to icon or list view, I can create folders levels deep. It took me a day to work out what was wrong!

  • How do I resort files and folders by name in Column View of Finder when Arrange by Name doesn't work?

I was using the arrange by function to select different arrangements of the files and folders in Finder (column view) but now that I want to return to having them arranged by Name, it is not rearranging the files/folders by name.  Instead they stay in a totally random, non-alphabetical arrangement.  List view sorts without issue by clicking on the column header. It is column view that will not return to arranging by name.  Please help me figure out what is wrong.
    Thank you!

Repair Disk Permissions in Disk Utility, reboot the computer in Safe Mode then restart normally and test.

  • Can't get folders to stay in column view... pulling hair out!!!

It doesn't matter what finder view options I set, they work for 1 or 2 times opening a finder window in column view, then goes back to the icon view. I hate icon view!!! What is the ridiculous deal with this and how can something so chump-change, penny-ante as keeping a simple folder view preference be so ridiculous as to migrate from one version of OSX to the next!?!?? At least there was an app in 10.4 that was in Utilities that you could log in as root, reset the windows the way you wanted and then log back out. Ridiculous that you had to do that kludge, but it worked... but I can't find that application anymore in Leopard... arghhh! Wow, I feel a bit better to have vented Can anyone help me fix this so I can always have Column view as the default... and possible save my sanity in the process?

Does this KBase article still apply?
Mac OS X: How to Save a Finder View (Column, Icon, or List) for a Specific Folder or Disk
It appears the Finder only keeps the desired setting if set on a newly opened window. If the folder was navigated to within the window and the setting is changed, that setting is temporary. So you need to (temporarily) set the Finder to open folders in a new window (Finder Preferences) so any window you navigate to is a new window, a "starting point". Then you can actually save that folder's setting. Note you can leave the "Show View Options" window open as you change between windows and it relates to the active window. Once all your desired folders are set, you can uncheck to open folders in new windows.
I usually navigate in column view and of course clicking through folders in column view is not the same as opening a new window so I had to create aliases of some folders to test with but this worked for me.
(hmm, further testing, they seem to keep for me even when set by navigating to it within a window.... but this might be worth a try)

  • Smart Folders - different view types

Why is it that some Smart Folders I create, look like a normal folder (can be sorted by Name, Date Modified, Kind, etc) and other Smart Folders look like the windows in Spotlight, which do not contain separate sortable headings for Name, Date Modified, etc.?
I tried to change the "view" but there appears to be no option to do so.

There are three View options available (in the "normal" window toolbar, which is above the "find" toolbar, if you have the toolbar enabled) in a Find window: as Icons, as List, as Groups. I have my search window set to a default of List view. The Groups is the usual default. You have to edit a system file if you want to change the default behavior. But if you open a Find window, set the View to list, enter your search criteria and save as a smart folder, then it should open in the same state it was when you saved it. Anyway, mine always do.
You can even go up to the Finder's menu item View and set the View options. For instance, you can change the window to Icon and then set the icon size to 128X128.

  • Duplicating folders in column view

When I duplicate a folder in column view, Finder selects the duplicate folder but don't show its contents or it simply shows the folder icon. I need to click on any other folder and then come back to the duplicate folder to see what's inside.
Just wondering if anyone else is having this problem, if not, how to solve this.

J, I have a few ideas, but I think you should first get Applejack...
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596
After installing, boot holding down CMD+s, then when the prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 5 of it's things.

  • List view status of flagged messages in Yosemite Mail Smart Folders

I'm using Mail in Yosemite with an Exchange server. Before Yosemite, everything was fine, now I have an issue with message flag status in Smart Folders. I have a Smart Folder which is my "ongoing" mail folder; it is set to only show unread and/or flagged messages. In the latest version of Mail, setting the messages flagged status does not change the flag icon in the message list, but does in the header of the actual mail message. The only way to get the flag to show up in the list is to select another folder and then reselect the smart folder. It does this on both my MacBook Pro and iMac, with with the latest Yosemite version and all updates applied.
In the previous OS X Mail (Mavericks) changing the flag status would remove/add the flag icon in the message list pane; now it doesn't. It's insanely annoying.
Anyone else seen this bug? I have tried recreating the smart folder and that makes no difference, neither has rebuilding the mailbox/deleting index/envelope file. No changes have been made to our Exchange server.
    Cheers
    Matthew

Well, I guess those are more "smart inboxes" and not "smart mailboxes" in iOS...

  • Smart Folders show icons only in Open Dialog pane

    Hi,
I have created a couple of Smart Folders and put them in the side bar. When i select the Smart Folder, it shows the files and their preview icons. When i access the same Smart Folder in an Open Dialog pane from Keynote or another application, it shows regular file icons only, not the preview icons.
Is this how it is supposed to work?

While I'm not quite sure what you mean, it sounds to me like you had the Open dialog set for Column view, and at some point changed it to List view. Take a look at the toolbar at the top of the Open dialog window, you should see the back/forward buttons, then a group of three icons representing icon, list and column view. Both icon view and column view will show a preview icon of the selected file. Personally, I like icon view, since you see all the files that fit in the window with custom thumbs, and can pick what you want quickly. If you change the setting, in say Safari, to list view (which makes more sense in Safari), then the Open dialog for, say, TextEdit gets changed too. Just change it back by clicking the little icon in the toolbar at the top of the Open window.

  • Sort-by-type for column view in open/save dialog boxes?

    Hello all,
I've done a fairly good search both on Google and in these forums and can't seem to find this question addressed. When I go to open or save something (in Preview, for example) I prefer to use Column View in the dialog box, since it is easy to see and navigate the folder structure. However, Column View always shows up sorted by name, even if I specified in Finder that the folder be sorted by type. Because of this, I have to scroll down and hunt for subfolders rather than having them conveniently listed at the top.
My question is this: is there a way to get Column View to sort by type in the open/save dialog boxes? (The Command+J that works in regular Finder does nothing in these dialog boxes.)
    Thanks!

No. Column view will only sort by name. If you wanted to put a space before each folder name, then they will sort to the top. Sorting by Kind will put folders above files, but it will also put anything else except files at the top. If there are only folders, however, that would put them first in the sort list.
