Columns & Text Flow Query

My document set-up is two columns. I want to insert images with captions in the left column and text-only in the right column.
I would like to have right column text contain itself within the right column. Ditto for the left column. I do not want continuous right column text to flow into the top of the left column on the next page.
I have tried many things but nothing works. If I set up with a narrow right column, I can get the images in but cannot type any text. I am sure that I do have to have two columns but I want them separate from each other.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Dennis,
Sorry I'm late on this. Thought I would get an e-mail notice of your post. Guess that is what 'Subscribe' is about.
Yes, I checked out the Pages Help and was good to go. I do not, however, seem to get the new, continuous box to work thus far. I am assuming, correctly or incorrectly, that the text will flow into the 'linked' text box which will be on a new page. So, I so have to sit down for an hour or so and figure this out. Most of what I am inserting into the text boxes is already written. Anyway, thanks or all of your help. Very nice of you to take your time on this.
OK! Back to the Seahawks. They must, and I mean MUST beat the Panthers. Their coach, in my opinion, is the essence of arrogance. I don't mind the best team winning, after all , that is what it's all about, but he just seems to relish the other teams loss. They destroyed the Chicago Bears, but I never believed that the Bears were intense enough to be a real contender.
I may be from Chicago, but my heart was with the Patriots to take it all. If their ball carrier's could have concentrated on doing what they were supposed to do - catch and then hold on to the ball - they could have made a game of it. However, I was born in New Mexico, so the Bronco's are okay as well. That's the problem when you like too many teams. I like the Seahawk coach because I like Green Bay and he did an awesome job while he was there. I know, I should get a job as a sports announcer. Ok! Enough of this.
Thanks again, and I'll be rooting for the Seahawks this Sunday. And the Bronco's.
Regards,
Phillip

  • Two Column Text Flow Problem

    Aside from Pages not importing Word (from a Mac) properly when there's columns involved I have another column problem.
    I'd like to find a way to make a document that has two equal side-by-side columns, lets call them Column A on the left and Column B on the right. So when I start typing in Column B on the right and reach the bottom of the page the text continues on that new page in Column B.
    As far as I can tell it's impossible to do this as every time I reach the end of a page, the text jumps to the left into Column A. Is there any way to set it up so when you type in one column pages automatically jumps to that same column on the next page without having to add section or layout or column breaks for every single page?
    This is a bit of a nightmare. It seems Pages can't do a simple two column document as it insists on linking them together for every new page it creates as you type text.
    Can anyone help me?

    There are definitely some liimitations in how Pages handles its flow of information. I dislike the fact that once you have placed your pages the way you want from the pages within a template there is no way of having the text automatically flow from one to the next (irritating since some of my templates are designed to be journals)
    Pages won't do what you want. I am sure there are programs which are better suited to do so because they are designed for that particular market. I thank you, however for not stamping your feet and demanding that it be the very next thing for them to accomplish on their growing list of things to do next.
    (and I tried a few different things, hoping to figure out a way to do this. One of which was to design a templlate which was half the width of a sheet of paper. It was determining what was placed on the second side which was difficult.)
    now, of course, depending on how long your document was going to be you could try something different by making an infinitely long sheet of paper. At every point where the header would be you just incorporated a text box or shape with a wrap so your text would skip down to the next virtual page.
    Of course, this sounds like far more work, and distracting to the natural creation process of a writer. Find the software which removes itself from your creative juices and lets you concentrate on being the awsome writer you are.

  • Two-Column text flow

    I would like to create a body of text arranged in two columns so that text that is entered into the first column will, when first col. is full,  continue into the second, and when that is full, into a new page, etc. Would you please show me how to set up my page to make this happen.
    At present I am having to manually move text around. Wondering if there is a way to have inDesign manage this for me automatically.

    Nope, the correct answer would depend on the version, what we don't know.
    Your answer would be the best practice for InDesign CS4 and older.
    With InDesign CS5 and later it is better to set up the master with a single column and set up object styles for the text frames with 2 or more columns. It is helpful to put normal ruler guides to the column edges.
    Span column would not work in 2 single columns, only with a single text frame.

  • Text flow into one or two column text boxes depending on the number of text lines

    Question InDesignCS3
    Is it possible to let text flow into one or two column textboxes depending on the number of text lines?
    Example 1)
    --Default text box--|
    | Text line 1 |
    | Text line 2 |
    | Text line 3 |
    | Text line 4 |
    ------------------- |
    If there are more than 4 text lines in the in the text box, this box has to become a two column box. like example 2
    example 2)
    |Text line 1 | Text line 4 |
    |Text line 2 | Text line 5 |
    |Text line 3 | Text line 6 |

    if (myTextFrame.lines > 4) {
    myTextFrame.textFramePreferences.textColumnCount = 2;
    } else {
    myTextFrame.textFramePreferences.textColumnCount = 1;

  • Text Flow from service order to requisition

    Hi Everyone,
    I having a problem regarding text flow from service orders IW31/IW32 to requisition ME53N.
    I created/updated a service order in IW31/IW32 and enter some text in "Operation Short Text" column. When I release the service order the short text should ideally be reflected in purchase requisition. What's happening right now is that "If the length of text entered in IW32 is more than 40 characters then the text is reflected in requisition ME53N otherwise any updates to this column text are not reflected in ME53N".
    I debugged ME53N and found that it gets the value of text using READ_TEXT so I hope the same is stored in standard text while saving IW31/IW32. I checked the text also which is created after saving Iw32 and it contains changed data only if the length of the data is more than 40 characters.
    To me it looks like standard SAP process that the text will flow from service order to purchase requisition only if the data length is more than 40 characters. If anyone has any idea can you please share. Is there any sugesstion for correcting this. Any reason or OSS.

    Hi,
    my situation is:
    - a WM managed warehouse, society A;
    - a HU managed warehouse (without WM), society B;
    - a purchasing process of HU from society A towards society B.
    Society B have a scheduling agreement; when a delivery schedule appears, in society A born a sales order and a delivery. After the registration of the delivery good issue, an idoc transfer information for inbound delivery creation.
    This process is ok without WM, but with a WM managed warehouse the idoc has the following problem:
    "V51VP - item was not found - process cancelled".
    Can you help me to transfer these HU?

  • Comment column in a query

    Hello,
    In a BW query, I need to add a column of text comments (for example, the description of a calculation, the unit used, ...). These texts are static, the queries will only be used as static reports (download scheduler), in excel and web, so we can not use any VB script.
    Is it a way to add some text in a cell of a column, as in the following example (columns 2 and 3) ?
    KF1    |    Comment for KF1    |    Euros    |    12
    KF2    |    Comment for KF2    |    %          |    47
    Thanks in advance
    Michaë

    Hi guys,
    finally how you fix this problem?, I need to show a comment in a query column and i don't know if this is posible ¿?, I have a query inside of a wad and I want to show a comment in the columns  of the query with the formula details.
    Please let me know if you this is possible.

  • Two column text box with header

    I have a text box that is set to flow as two columns. The beginning of the text box has a header then a list of bulleted items. My problem is that when the text flows to the second column, it is set at the top (in-line with the header). What I would like is to do something like set a top margin just for the second column so it will line up with the body text from the first column. Is there an easy way to do this or should I just use two text boxes and position the second box where I want it?

    Simplest is to use two text boxes.
    Dave Saunders has a script (http://pdsassoc.com/index.php?Nav=downs&Ban=Downloads&Info=downloads.html) that can do it with one text box by putting your head in a one-column table that intrudes into the second column. I've never used his script, and I see his website says CS and CS2, so I'm not sure if it would work with your version.
    You could probably achieve what you want (because I see you don't actually need the head to straddle, just the texts to top align with each other) by forcing a huge leading on one character in a frame that's set to First Baseline Offset by Leading.

  • Creating a two columns text reflow

    Hi
    I'm trying to create a two column page which needs to get data that will fill the columns. Upon filling one column, the text will need to reflow to the next one (as much as a two column text frame in a layout program does).
    Is it possible in a Designer ES? (version 8.2.1.5161.1.566259) What is the best practice to do so?
    Thanks,
    Yossi Maoz

    Are you trying to make it an interactive form or are you going to merge data onto the template and make a print form? In either case I modified your sample. The root Page subform must be set to flowed. You do not need a field in the second content area. I resized the 1st field to make it easier. I changed the layout to allow the field to expand in the Y direction (on the layout tab). I cahnged the Form Properties/Preview to Interactive so that I coudl enter in data. Now when the field fills up scroll bars will appear and when you tab off of the field the field will be redrawn to its actual size. Enter in enough data to case a page overflow and you will see the second column fill up.

  • Text Flow around objects

    I have a two-column book with photographs/diagrams of different sizes. On occasions where these extend into the second column, the text flow is often uneven across the two columns. I can get the text in the right hand column to move down, but not the left to move up. (page 11) Sometimes the same sort of thing applies with the photo just in one column - the left and right text blocks don't line up. It's probably something simple I am missing, but what?
    Another issue on similar lines concerns any box/photo/line/object I put in place. When I started with the program, I experimented a little with the Text Wrap settings. Somehow these became accepted as default, and every new line/box etc comes in with these settings I then have to alter. How do I change these default settings? I have re-set it any number of times, it still comes back to my first experimental values.
    I am using CS6 InDesign on an i-Mac with OSX 10.6.8.
    Thanks, Les

    Check the Help files for an explanation of how to use the Baseline Grid feature. It's not fun, but it fixes your problem.

    To change the default for the current document, set it to None with nothing selected.
    To change the default for all future documents, set it to None with no document open.

  • Text Flow in ePUB and Accessible PDF

    I have a newsletter in InDesign.  I have all the text flow marked.  Each article is a separate "story".  Story1 flows onto page 2, with the text flows linked correctly.  On page 2, story2 begins in the text box below the end of story1.
    So on page 2, why does accessble pdf read story2 before the second portion of story1?
    I have the same behavior in the version extracted to EPUB.
    Any ideas what I am doing wrong? or how I can correct it without having to create a single column of text throughout?
    Thank you,
    Joyce

    I've never seen that. In both accessible PDFs and EPUB, when I export all of a story will be read before going on to another object.
    What version of InDesign are you using? If you're using InDesign CS5.5 or later, you can use the Articles panel to set the reading order for accessibility (or for EPUB).

  • Oracle Text contain query limit with 9i

    The Oracle Text contain query is defined as this:
    CONTAINS(
    [schema.]column,
    text_query VARCHAR2
    [,label NUMBER])
    RETURN NUMBER;
    Is the size limit of text_query 4000 bytes with 9i? Is it increased with 10g or is it accepting CLOB in 10g?
    I always got the error: "ORA-01460: unimplemented or unreasonable conversion requested" when I do the following where p_var was dynamically passed with size of more than 4000 bytes:
    p_statement varchar2(20000);
    p_var varchar2(8000);
    p_statement := select count(*) from dewey_table where contains(concat, :x)>0;
    open m_cursor for p_statement using p_var;
    Thanks very much,
    Kevin

    The limit is definitely 4000 characters in 9i and the 10g documentation shows no change in the calling spec for that parameter.

  • Text flow stops midway

    I work for a map company and am doing a layout with maps and the street indexes that go with them. When I get a really lengthy text file like Vancouver which has 6500 paragraphs of text (eg. George St. C-15 is an example of what each paragraph is like) the text doesn't flow properly. It will stop right in the middle of a text frame and sometimes even continue in later with a big gap in between. For most of our map layouts the indexes aren't a problem but for cities like Vancouver I have to resort to laying out the index in Quark (yuk!) and importing that image into the indesign layout.
    Here are the steps: I import a text file into Indesign text frames that have multiple columns and when the index, which is alphabetical, gets to about the letter J, it just stops...no more text. As I said above, sometimes it will even start back midway through a column. There is nothing wrong with the structure (eg. no text wraps, paragraph spacing, etc) and we've had numerous people here checking to look for some error we've made. Sometimes it will work if I take a text box that was 6 columns and break it into two - 3 column text boxes. There definitely seems to be an issue with the number of lines of text. This only happens with the very large indexes. Is there a limitation on line count in Indesign? Is this where Framemaker is needed? Is there any way around this? I really, really don't want to use Quark.
    Karen

    That long string of numbers separated by commas and no spaces is the problem. It can't break because ID thinks it's a single number and it's too wide for the column.
    Since there are presumably no real numbers in the story with actual comma separators that you need to keep from breaking, it would probably be safe to just add a discretionary line break to any place where you have a digit followed by a comma and a digit.
    Do a GREP find change. Search for (\d,)(\d) and change to $1~k$2
    This translates to find (any digit and a comma)(any digit) [the parentheses are there to group the found text into chunks] and replace with first chunk of found text - discretionary line break - second chunk of found text.

  • Place in the center the column texts

    Hi BW knowledge broadcasters,
    I am looking for the method to place in the center the column texts. It seems it could be in the css implemented in the WAD web template. But I don't know neither for the queries built directly with the Query Designer.
    Thanks in advance.
    Geo

    One problem you will encounter is that the column headers and the rows have the same class associated to them and if you set this to center, your rows will also be centered.  You will need to either use the Table API to change the class of just the column headers or possibly with javascript.  To find the class, run the query in the web, right-click and select view source, search for the text in the columns and find the associated class referenced in the HTML.
    Here is a link to all of the styles in the standard BWReports.css:
    <a href="http://help.sap.com/saphelp_bw33/helpdata/en/3f/ca453afbf37b54e10000000a11402f/content.htm">http://help.sap.com/saphelp_bw33/helpdata/en/3f/ca453afbf37b54e10000000a11402f/content.htm</a>
    This is specific to BW 3.x.  In 2004s, the styles are now driven from the Portal theme.
    Thanks,

  • Solved: InDesign CC: Problems with text in text box: text flows around invisible object

    I just upgraded from CS4 to CC. I have two problems with text in some text boxes:
    The text seems to flow around invisible object that I cannot find or delete. It's as if there is a photo or other object behind the text box; but when I press COMMAND-a to select all, I don't see any such object.
    When I move this text box, the layout of the text within changes. For example, when the box is high on my spread, the text flows correctly within the box; but when I move it down, it flows around that hidden other object. For another example, when the box is low on the page, the text starts at the top of the box; but when I move the text box up, the text starts somewhere in the middle of the box.
    I have checked margins of the text box and the paragraph options of the text paragraphs (margins, indents, alignments). They all look OK.
    If I modify the text box, checking the box "Ignore text wrap", then the problem goes away; but then the text also will not flow around a real object that I want it to flow around.
    Solution:
    There were objects in a hidden layer on that one spread. It seems that in CS4 when you "select all" you would also select objects in hidden layers; but in CC it doesn't.

  • ID CS3 - text wrap doesn't work at the end of a long multi-columned text frame

    Did a search - don't think this specific issue has been addressed:
    We design large graphics often used on walls. When working with a text frame that that was 11 feet long and had 8 columns, text wrap would not work on an image placed in the last column. The same image with the same text wrap applied will work fine anywhere else in the text frame. I found that if I shortened the width of the text frame a little bit at a time eventually it would work, but there doesn't seem to be a specific cut-off width - sometimes the last column won't text wrap when the frame is 115 inches wide and sometimes it doesn't work when the frame is only 80 inches wide. Again, all of the other columns work fine. I have tried all of the obvious stuff, the only variable between the columns that wrap and the one that doesn't is it's position at the end of the text frame.
    We have gotten around this issue by using multiple threaded frames instead of one long frame with multiple columns, but I am curious if anyone else has run into this or might know what the issue is.
    thanks
