Com.apple.Preview and mf_refimg folders in trash (recovered files) lately

Hi,
Lately I am seeing a recovered files folder in the trash with a bunch of Preview folders titled "com.apple.Preview8909_2118585411 " and the like and also some titled "mf_refimg.29" and the like. All have pictures in them. The Preview folder has a bunch, if not all of the pics I've looked at with Preview lately (maybe yesterday's batch from the camera) and the mf_refimg folders have a graphic I used with Disc Cover, a CD/DVD cover app. Disc Cover is working fine as is Preview. No strange behavior noted in either app other than the OS thinking that Preview still has a pic open after I have closed that pic, which has been a sporadic Preview bug for awhile. All the pics appear to be copies of pics that are happily in the folders they started out in, elsewhere on my computer.
Why is it doing this? I have recently checked the drive using Disk Utility from my install CDs and nothing has been found to be wrong. I had a kernal panic a few days ago but Disk Utility has checked things since and found nothing wrong. (The kernal panic was due to my trying to startup from an external Firewire drive that had 10.4.8 on it. That disk has since been erased and reformatted with no system on it, just the driver so it will appear on my desktop when connected. I haven't used that drive since checking my Powerbook disk with Disk Utility.)
Thanks for any help.
Cheers,
John L

Just to add a bit to what Malcolm said--many programs keep temporary files. In Preview's case you'll notice that there is a "Revert" item in the File menu, so if you make changes and then change your mind it can recover the the original. The temp files for Preview are stored in this hidden directory:
"/private/var/tmp/folders.501/TemporaryItems"
Programs are supposed to clean up after themselves when they quit, invisibly getting rid of their temp files, but some programs fail to do this. Preview USED to but no longer does (one of a number of things that got goofed up in Preview when they re-wrote it). When that happens the system itself will do the clean-up next time you restart, and place the temp files into the Recovered Items folder which it deposits in the Trash. Another Apple program that fails to delete its temp files when it quits is SoundTrack Pro (and its garbage can be very large files). Since programs are supposed to automatically get rid of this stuff, when they don't the system assumes the program crashed and that you might want the things back, so puts them in a folder in the Trash so you can sort through and decide if you need or can use them.

  • Com.apple.MediaLibraryService and Pages = *#€%/&/€/!!!

    Hi all!
Just recently, without me altering anything I have stopped using the otherwise eminent Pages-app due to it also opening the process com.apple.MediaLibraryService and that process alone eats almost 1 gig of memory.
Why does this happen and what can be done to let me use Pages again?

I just got my Mac Mini back from the Genius Bar after a logic board replacement and used Carbon Copy Cloner to put the contents of the hard drive back onto the disc. On startup I get scrolling black text informing me that there is a conflict between com.apple.kernel and com.apple.kpi and to choose one. How do I fix this? The Apple store is 90 min away so I'd like to keep that as a last resort.

It was a conflict with Parallels

  • Lion Preview and Textedit very slow when opening files from Leopard Server

My small office (about 10 users) recently upgraded our iMac's, Mac Mini's, and Macbook Pro's.  We are experiencing a big problem with Preview opening super slow (1-2 minutes) when trying to open JPG's, PDF's, etc from our 10.5.8 Leopard Server.  We have deleted numerous plist files related to Preview, completely deleted Preview.app from one iMac and reinstalled it via Pacifist and still no change in performance.  One of the new iMac's does open much faster than the others, but we cannot figure out why this one machine works well and the others don't.
All machines are showing the below error (dozens of times) in Console when trying to open files directly from the server...
    sandboxd:  ([###])  Preview(###) deny system-fsctl
We have searched the internet for a solution but have not come up with anything that works.  This problem exists with Textedit as well.  We did try opening a file from one Lion machine to the other and it opened very fast.  We also can open files very quickly from older 10.4.11 Tiger machines directly from the server.  So the best we can determine right now is Lion and Leopard Server are not playing nicely together.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

"Enable Related Files" isn't the fix for this issue. It's slightly different - I wanted to still load related files, but only the ones local to the file I was editing.
The fix was to use DW's Resolve To IP Address feature. It required adding a registry value - it fixed the issue straight away

  • Apple Preview and Interactive PDF Issue

Hello all - I'm having trouble with exporting an Interactive PDF for Preview in which the content boxes align and print identical to that of Adobe Acrobat. See below for pictures. The text out of the boxes are on Apple Preview.
Any help in the matter would be appreciated. Thanks!

    Hey Grant,
thank you so much for your effort. But I have to say that that's not the solution for my problem.
You see my interactive features work perfectly with Adobe Reader 8. But with the Reader 10 it jsut won't work.
I've created a pdf for you to see but I ripped it off all its former content:
    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/824709/Adobe%20Test.pdf
    and here's the .indd file
    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/824709/Adobe%20Test.indd
You see, I want the buttons if clicked appear in another state and show a different Picture.
And now it even seems to work. But when I tried it again with all the content the pictures won't change anymore

  • Create an interactive pdf that works in Apple Preview (and Acrobat Reader)

    Hi,
I've created a very large interactive document for a client in InDesign CS6, which has buttons that help the user go to various locations in the doc and back, and have only rollover states on all the buttons. The interactivity works fine in Acrobat Pro, but my client wants it to work in Apple Preview. How do I make it work in Preview? If I can also get it to work in Acrobat Reader that would be a bonus too.
Any help would be very appreciated.
    Thanks!
    Gary

    Thanks Peter and UWE,
Upon further testing, it appears that most of the interactivity seems to be working in Preview now, but some buttons do not show up correctly, whereas most of the others do.
The ones that aren't showing up correctly are primarily on the main Home page. They are all rectangle buttons, with a photographic background in the button and the name of the link to the section on top of the button, like "introduction", "Product", etc. The button itself works in Preview, but the photograph placed in the button doesn't appear, all you see is the name of the the button without the image in the background.
Any clues on how to fix this this?
    Thanks

  • Trash recovered files

    hey
iv browsed a few 'recovered files' discussions but none of them really solved my general query
I'm just wondering what users do with their recovered files you find in he trash, normally these are files with a random string of letters and numbers which inevitably end up just being deleted (mostly through laziness).
but what do you other uses do? is there a simple way of restoring them? are they important?

  • I lost a really important file (an iText Express document) randomly and then one day, a "recovered file" folder popped up and I assume it has to do with that, but the file just contains a doc with a bunch of coding. What do I do with that? HELP!!!

As the title question states, I lost a really important file with iText Express. I've been using iText Express for a year or two now because it's just the one application I downloaded for writing and saving documents. I was working on one for a few months and randomly one day last month, when I went to open it to resume editing my work, the file was gone! I searched my whole laptop and trash. Then one day, a "Recovered Files" folder popped up in the area my file used to be, so I assumed that was the file I lost being recovered and I felt relieved. But when I opened the folder, the document inside was a "SoftwareMap" document with a bunch of coding written in it. I don't understand what I'm supposed to do with that or how it's going to help me recover my file?!? I lost SO much work!!! If anyone has ANY idea what to do, how this happened, or if the coding is supposed to help me recover my file, PLEASE help!!!

No, I already tried looking at that. The file that recovered was not in the trash, it appeared in my documents folder. I opened it up and inside was an iText Express document with coding. Then inside of there, was and then and this "SoftwareMap" document contained a bunch of coding and symbols and words.

  • "MerpAD RDC" file in Trash "Recovered Files" after every startup.

Does anyone know what this "MerpAD RDC" file is? It shows up in the Recovered Files in my Trash every time I reboot / startup. It's not causing any trouble, just curious as to what it is.

I have the same issue. I don't seem to see it everytime, but almost. I am going to try to keep better track of it. I have seen several different files show up here. Mostly this one.

  • Com.apple.Preview.plist

Does anyone know how to change the default SaveAs option in Preview to JPEG instead of TIFF? Many times I load a JPEG file into Preview, crop it, create a new image, and Save As. I always want it to be JPEG but the default is TIFF.
many macs and iPods   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

OK, let me say it differently. I load a JPG, crop it, choose New and the cropped image is pasted into the new window. I then Save (the unsaved, untitled) file, and Preview proposes that I save the file as 'untitled', format TIFF, in Documents. I can Ctrl-D to set it to desktop. At this point, I'd like to hit [Enter] and Save it to the desktop as Untitled as file format JPEG. Then I can rename it as desired.
Do you know how to change the default format for New files to JPG as the default (instead of the current default of TIFF)?

Ever since I updated to 10.8.4 my Quicktime is acting up. It doesn't preview video or audio files, and quits when I try to open a file. Here are some screenshots.
QT and QL are related but different functional technologies. I would probably look for something common to both causing the problem. Normally, the first thing I would do is check to see if the problem is local to a single user account or is global. If global, I would initialize an external stratup drive with the same system and see if the problem is duplicated on that drive. (I.e., develop a troubleshooting process.)
It previews pictures fine, but audio and video files do not preview. I can't use Skype anymore either cause Quicktime is acting up.
Not a Skype user so I don't know anything about potential associated QT/QL problems.
I cannot uninstall Quicktime because OSX says it's required and cannot be uninstalled.
QT is actually a structure embedded in the operating system. As such, it cannot be removed/deleted. The QT X Player, on the other hand, is a GUI app used to access the embedded QT structure. Unfortunately, since users of previous versions of the QT X player have created self-inflicted problems by moving the app and/or accidentally deleting it, my guess here is that Apple decided to institute safeguards to prevent users from being able to "modify" or "delete" the QT X player app at all. If you really feel the app or the structure is in fact corrupted, then re-install the entire Mountain Lion operating system. (Again, I personally would try creating a secondary startup external drive to test this hypothesis before doing anything further to the primary startup volume.)

  • Rescue and Recovery tool - problem with recovering files stored on USB memory stick

I recently had to use the Lenovo Care Rescue and Recovery tool to restore my 300 N200 to a previously backed up state.
As part of the Rescue and Recovery I selected the option to save user data in My Documents to a USB memory stick before restoring to the backup. This seemed to be successful (tool confirmed that 300MB of files were saved). But when I wanted to restore the files from the USB memory stick back to the laptop none of the folders/files is visible.
I checked the memory status of the USB memory stick and this confirms that 300MB space is taken up - but no files visible!!!
    Can anyone help??
