Combat Arms on a Mac??

I'm thinking about purchasing a Mac laptop but I need to know if I would be able to play Combat Arms smoothly via parallels or BootCamp.
Specs to play the game are as follows.
MINIMUM
OS....................Windows 2000
CPU...................Pentium 3 - 1GHz+
MEMORY................256Mb RAM
VIDEO CARD............GeForce 2 MX
DIRECT X..............Version 9.0C or later
HARD DISK SPACE.......2.0 Gb
INTERNET CONNECTION...Cable/DSL
RECOMMENDED
OS....................Windows XP or better
CPU...................Pentium 4 - 2.4GHz+
MEMORY................512Mb RAM
VIDEO CARD............GeForce FX 5600 or better
DIRECT X..............Version 9.0C or later
HARD DISK SPACE.......2.0 Gb
INTERNET CONNECTION...Cable/DSL
So again my questions are
(1) Can I play the game via parallel software or BootCamp?
(2) Based on the system requirements listed above, which Mac laptop(s) would be able to handle the game smoothly?
Any advice is greatly appreciated.
Eric

1) the previous generation macbook? or current aluminum unibody macbook?
2) going to run XP Pro SP3
3) yeah i thought so, thanks for confirming!
so the previous "non aluminum unibody" macbook would run it okay? The reason i ask is because from what i understand the new macbook has insanely better graphics than the one before...
thoughts?

  • Best Used Mac

    Hello and thanks for the advice. I have been shopping a bit for a new (used) Powermac. I was planning on getting a G5 Dual but the alarming chirps, and fan explosions and fluid leak issues have me a bit worried. I'm concerned about the lack of expandability for an IMac. My question is this: what is the best deal on a used Mac? Should I spend the extra dough for a Quad core or are the duals more reliable than they seem. Ive been beating up my G4 powerbook (1.67ghz) for three years and it continues to motor without any troubles. I plan to use this machine to run Mac and windows software, a bit of audio editing, and CS3 adobe programs.I am an artist and my wife will be doing most of the audio stuff. We are not going to be making a loving off of this machine. Budget: around 2K. I would love to get a screen if possible.

    Hi-
    The Quad is a formidable machine. With non-Intel optimized software, the G5 Quad still shows it's stuff when compared to the Mac Pro's.
    That the main point, though- do you need a couple seconds faster for a filter render, or do you need to get the full potential out of the latest Intel optimized software. And, as DaddyP pointed out, if you need Windows stuff on the machine, you need the Intel chip.
    There are some interesting benchmarks that show the speed and ability of a Mac Pro, compared to the speed and ability G5 Quad.
    SHOOTOUT: Quad Xeon 3.0GHz Mac Pro versus Quad G5 2.5GHz Power Mac
    ARM CHAIR ANALYSIS: Mac Pro versus Quad G5
    Geek Patrol (very good discussion after the benchmarks).
    Trouble is, I've heard and read around the traps that the current iMac 2.8 extreme is faster than the quad g5 2.5.
    True, until you put Photoshop in the iMac, or run other processor intensive tasks.
    SHOOTOUT: iMac Intel Core Duo 2.0GHz versus Others
    Mac Performance In The Raw - G5 Power Mac Quad Core 2.5 GHz versus Intel Core Duo iMac 20" 2GHz
    Sad as it may be, (Sorry, Quad owners!), the Quad is old technology, out-dated, obsolete.
    But, as long as the system starts up, the Quad is a remarkable, still viable machine. *It is the undisputed "Best Used Mac" in the PPC series.* Intel is a different Apple.....
    It's the G5 I've always wanted.....and the only G5 I've wanted.....(for whatever that's worth!)

    Mac's don't need anything, certainly don't need performance robbing, always on, third party anti-virus that has always caused problems in the past as Apple changes things and combats malware themselves, why Mac's hardly get any malware, and if they do, not for long.

    It "can" help, but it really can't and $40 a year is really wasted.
    For those who want to track down a rarely stolen Mac there is free Prey
    http://preyproject.com/
    This is the facts about recovereing a stolen Mac.
    If you don't get the computer within the first week or so, by some dumb local kid who snatched it and wants to use it, keeps all your data on it, your options after that are pretty slim concerning recovery options.
    The problem with tracking software is there isn't a whole lot of "open" networks for the computer to connect automatically to the Internet anymore. Most networks are now password protected, so in order to get on a network means one has to enter the password into OS X, which means they got to get into it first.
    The way most Mac's are they are password protected, the thief when confronted with a password screen, is likely going to wipe the entire computer to remove all traces of the former owner, including MacKeeper and Prey, for sale on eBay, classifieds, overseas etc. or to use it themselves. Any pro thief or fence with brains is going to let a hot device "cool" off for some time before messing with it, then it's going to get wiped of all data and sold in a way as not to be traceable back to the seller.
    Even if the wiped computer id gets picked up by Apple's servers and Apple cooperates (likely not) and provides a consistent IP where the computer is located, the costs involved recovering the machine is going to be in most cases, substantially more than the machine is worth, in another State or country halfway around the world. Then it's likely going to be some innocent who bought it used off eBay or classified and can't locate the purchaser.
    Unless you had your Mac just stolen and Prey picked it up in a few days and you ran down to the police station with tons of evidence showing you know exactly where it's at, the police will likely do nothing or hope it shows up in a raid they made, as they are looking for someone to arrest and throw in jail so they can meet their quota's (jail is a business) so they want to make sure if they are going out with you, they can make a arrest. God forbid if your wrong or you just missed the thief at the coffee shop, you likely won't get another shot.
    If your really concerned about recuperating your losses on a stolen Mac, you should buy insurance. Some forms of renters and property insurance covers loss from a burglery, provided the Mac was stolen in such a manner.
    So what is that $40 a year for MacKeeper really going for? Nothing.

  • Will it be able to run these games?

    Hello everyone,
    i've had a small question an its been worrying me a little bit for the past couple days, basically i'm working for UPS an basically getting all the seasonal money I can. I'm struck by getting a new laptop which would be a Mac Pro, Mac Air, or possibly just a iPad Air.
    If I end up getting a mac, I'm thinking a Mac Pro will be better for me to go when I decide to run Windows on a part of it so I can continue to play the certain games I like to play from time to time when I get free time. I'm not sure if a Mac Air would also be able to handle it, so I've included it as well in the question. Basically I wanted to know if a Mac Air an a Mac Pro by default on purchasing on Apple's website would be enough to play these games without hardly any problems.
    Vindictus
    Combat Arms
    Minecraft
    7DaystoDie
    Those are the games I'm playing around with when I have the time. If these two computers can't run these games on their default specs, I'm wondering would an Apple Store carry upgraded models? I've recently went into one of their stores an tried to use the "Can You Run IT" software on one of the Pro's and turns to find out that website is Windows based only, so basically couldn't find a Mac side at all.
    Thanks for your help.

    ipad air is out for those games.  a macbook pro would be the best choice.  my kid plays world or warcraft on his pro.  no issues
    Peace, Clyde

    You can do this, but you cannot simply plug in the cable. You must also enable Internet Sharing in the Sharing system preference on the Mac. Also, you must share a different connection than the one that the Mac itself uses for Internet access, so if the Dell must use Ethernet, the Mac must use wifi. The Mac will take the wifi signal and share it with the Dell.
    If you need more instructions, here are some from Apple:
    OS X Mavericks: Share your Internet connection
    If for some reason this doesn't work well, I agree with kevin_ that you should just get a USB wifi adapter for the Dell, or alternately a wifi bridge that plugs into the Dell's Ethernet port (the Dell will simply think it's Ethernet).

  • Static Electricity causing Aluminum Shelled Notebooks to freeze??

    Once in awhile, when I come back to my computer, I get "shocked" by the aluminum body of my MacBook Pro (just for the record, this has happened to me too since the Titanium and the previous [same design] Powerbook) .... and it'll freeze the OS.
    Nothing moves, and I have to hard restart.
    Does this happen to anyone else? It seems like it happens when the static discharges on the trackpad.
    What is up with this???

    When using my PowerBook G4, I sometimes feel the zap of static electricity when I first touch it...and if my finger was close enough to the trackpad, the zap 'stuns' the trackpad for several seconds. It's difficult to move the cursor very far. After several seconds the responsiveness returns and everything is normal. This is with the factory power supply and either the two prong adapter or cable with grounded plug.
    Also my Mac Pro (and my previous machine, a PowerMac G5) seems susceptible to static. Apparently my desk chair builds up a charge when I'm sitting at the computer for long periods and if I put the computer to sleep and then get out of the chair, the computer wakes back up. My G5 did the exact same thing. The other morning it was particularly cold and I draped a shirt over the back of my chair and the static from that woke the computer. As I walked into the room I could feel the shirt crackling and raising the hair on my arm.
    The Mac Pro has a grounded plug, but the machine is sitting on a carpeted floor under my desk... I've been wondering if I should find a mat or something to put it on.
    Crazy, huh?

  • Injecting a DLL into an EXE?

    I'm trying to simply inject a dll into a running excutable.

    Hi, oliver_alarm2079,
    Your question is "too common", and looks like "beginner" question. What is your final goal for code injection? Assumed, that if you thinking about this - you're experienced user with deep LabVIEW and OS understanding. In parallel topic I see then you trying to wrote the injection utility in LabVIEW. Impossible is nothing, but LabVIEW is pretty high level tool, so using MSVC is the best and easiest way (you will need this in any case, because for code injection you will need to know the addressed of the hooked functions - its impossible in LabVIEW directly).
    Basic of code injection - is routing DLL calls from external application into your code. The easiest way is - use own proxy dll with same export as original and __declspec(naked), then perform jumps into original code. Another possible way is hooking with MS Detours. The CreateRemoteThread/WriteProcessMemory technique is also pretty advanced. But from your code I see that you haven't enough experience, sorry about that.
    In the past I've used code injection with LabVIEW only once. It was used for debugging. I've got trouble with my builded exe. LabVIEW Run-Time sporadically throws internal exception at line 663 in MemoryManager.cpp in large application. So, I wrote my own DLL, then inject the code into DSSetHandleSize (function where exception occurred), then trace all calls and finally successfully figured out which LabVIEW code was involved.
    What I can recommend to you - proceed to www.codeproject.com and search for keywords like "code injection, proxy dll, ms detours". You will get much more information about this.
    Andrey.

  • Combo 10.7.4 Update slowing down and freezing applications

    After updating from Combo Mac OS X 10.7.3 to Combo Mac OS X 10.7.4, my third party applications slow to a crawl and freeze on a rotating basis.
    Affected applications:
    - BOINC with which I do volunteer medical research (3 CPUs used 100% of the time);
    - aMule 2.3.1 to download files;
    - Mozilla Firefox 12.0 to browse the internet.
    I tried to reduce the CPU usage of BOINC (3 CPUs used 80% of the time instead of 100%) to no avail.
    I re-installed with some difficulty Mac OS X 10.7.1 from the copy I bought on the Mac App Store to preserve the work I had done on my iMac since the last TimeMachine back-up, but did not improve performance, possibly because I ended up with a mixed system of Mac OS X 10.7.4 components surviving the Mac OS X 10.7.1 re-install.
    I am currently performing a TimeMachine re-install of my previous system (Combo Mac OS X 10.7.3) which will take almost a full day and erase my Macintosh HD to copy the TimeMachine content.
    When reading posts on AppleInsider.com and TonyMac x86 blog @ http://tonymacx86.blogspot.ca, I came up with at least 3 different explanations:
    - The Mac OS X 10.7.4 System takes up all the RAM memory and gives back unused, free memory only slowly, so that third party applications (and Apple applications such as the Finder and Force Quit) don't have enough free memory and freeze on an alternate basis, although my Core i5 quad-core iMac has 12 GB of installed RAM recognized by Mac OS X;
    - Apple has changed kext files in anticipation of the upcoming Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion and accidently changed the CPU multiplier so that the CPU is artificially limited to 1.6 GHz (instead of a quad-core 2.66 GHz);
    - Apple has changed the /Extra/org.chameleon.Boot.plist file and the following lines of the booting sequence:
    <key>GeneratePStates</key>
       <string>Yes</string>
    should be replaced by using TextEdit to copy the following lines:
    <key>DropSSDT</key>
       <string>Yes</string>
    For more info, see:
    http://www.tonymacx86.com/viewtopic.php?f=168&t=59889
    I'm just an average user with no programming skills. I don't feel comfortable with doing undocumented tweaks when I don't really understand what I am doing. On this one, I sure hope that Apple engineers are investigating the issue to come up with a fix.
    In the mean time, I am using TimeMachine to re-install my previous system (Combo Mac OS X 10.7.3) which will take almost a full day. I have been deprived of my iMac for 3 days and that's all the time that I can spend on a malfunctioning Combo Mac OS X 10.7.4 Update.
    quad-core Core i5-750 @ 2.66 GHz
    12 GB SO-DIMM RAM
    2 TB hard drive with 100 GB of free space

    Final report:
    I hope that my experience will help others who added their comments to this thread and anyone else who has problems updating Mac OS X.
    Here's the solution to my problems:
    1- I backed up the contents of my iMac using TimeMachine (before any attempt to install a major system update) so that I would always have a copy of my Mac running smoothly under Mac OS X 10.7.3;
    2- I used Geekbench to measure the performance of my iMac running Mac OS X 10.7.3 and achieved a score of 7622;
    3- Using Google and browsing through Apple Support Communities, I realized that Mac users weren't up in arms over the Mac OS X 10.7.4 Update, instead I was confronted with a number of users reporting various issues, none of which was similar to what my iMac experienced, meaning that my experience was unique, exceptional;
    4- Starting the iMac through a self-made Mac OS X 10.7.1 booting DVD (I didn't make a Mac OS X 10.7 Lion USB thumb drive), I used my TimeMachine backup to erase the contents of the iMac and replace it with the copy of the backed up iMac running Mac OS X 10.7.3 (before the Mac OS X 10.7.4 Update);
    5- Once everything was stable and running well, after repairing the Macintosh HD and then, repairing permissions with the Apple Disk Utility, I did what most Mac users do, i.e. use the Software Update command under the Apple menu to check if there were any available update for my iMac running Mac OS X 10.7.3;
    6- Software Update offered me a 729 MB Mac OS X 10.7.4 Update which is bigger than the 692 MB Mac OS X 10.7.4 (Client) Delta Update being offered on Apple Support Downloads;
    7- I downloaded and installed the 729 MB Mac OS X 10.7.4 Update offered through Software Update which, presumably, contained additional software which is specific to the iMac model and year that I use;
    8- After making a Safe Boot as described by Apple @ http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455, repairing the Macintosh HD and then, repairing permissions with the Apple Disk Utility, and giving the iMac 2 more days to defragment on its own the hard disk, I am pleased to report that my iMac achieved a higher score of 7663 on GeekBench, showing that everything is back to normal and that my iMac runs even better with the Mac OS X 10.7.4 Update.
    Hope this helps anyone reading this post. Good luck.

  • G5 duo core 2.00 gz or the Xeons ?

    Hello,
    I am sure ths question has come about many times...I just wanted to hear what would anyones advice be... I can pick up a g5 2.0 power mac for $1300.00 from Frys or...get a 3 month old Mac Pro 2.66 from a friend for $2K... any thoughts? Which machine would do best for gaming/video rendering longevity etc?
    Thanks
    dual g5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    avinator,
    I can't speak from direct experience with Mac Pro, but I would recommend that the most economical choice would be the gently used Mac Pro for $2K. I have just had a motherboard/processor failure on my G5 Dual 2.5 (single core) which will likely be repaired (under AppleCare) rather than the computer replaced, but I would jump at the chance to upgrade to the Mac Pro. The way I see it, the advantages are many:
    1. You are getting 4 processing cores, each at 2.66 vs. 2 cores at 2.0, faster FSB and memory.
    2. You have access to the premium Mac GPU as a kit (if it is not installed on the Mac Pro) -- you can also buy a kit for the G5 with same GPU...see the last link below
    3. You gain the ability to (dare I even mention) run Windows through BootCamp
    4. You have a greatly simplified cooling system (down from the multi-fan, liquid-cooled G5) that leads to increased internal expandability and...
    5. Standard room for 4 hard drives, vs 2 in the PowerMac and...
    6. Standard room for a second optical drive
    7. Plus, the socketted processors MAY leave you with the option to upgrade processors at a future date...see this article if interested:
    The unofficial eight-core Apple Mac Pro
    I don't do a lot of video rendering or gaming, but I would guess that if you are using Final Cut or software optimized for Intel Macs, you will get better performance from the faster Mac Pro. You should check out the testing and articles at BareFeats.com. Here are some to look at:

  • Router problems with online gaming

    Hi,
    I have problems with online gaming. My router is  Linksys wrt54g2 and modem is ZTE ZXDSL 831AII and with two computers. I can't play any onlines game for example Counter-Strike 1.6 or Counter-Strike: Source. When I'm trying to connect in those games servers when it loads too bars I'm geting error that says: "Connection failed after 4 retries". Also I can't play StrongHold, Combat Arms and Battlefield2. I try to bypassing my router by connecting computer directly to my modem and games works. What I should do? Please help me.

    Do you have problems with web browsing or other online applications? If not, the problem may lie with the games themselves. It's possible the games require ports to be forwarded to work correctly. Check the game documentation and see if this is the case.

  • Video cuts out during games - Black screen

    HI,
    I've been trying to troubleshoot a problem for the past few months. I've searched these forums and several others without much luck.
    System:
    MSI P6N SLI
    Intel Core 2 6420
    Silverstone ST75ZF 750w (quad +12v rail)
    EVGA 8800GTS --> PNY Geforce 9800 GT XR8
    Mushkin DDR2 800 1gb x2 = 2gb total --> new 1gb x2
    Viewsonic VX1940w 19" LED w/ DVI
    Onboard sound --> Creative XFI gamer card
    x1 HDD SATA, x1 DVD RW
    Playing games like Bioshock causes the monitor to go black when I encounter flashing explosions. IE Bioshock, after each death, right after the screen turns to white, the monitor goes black every time while the game continues. Cannot tab out to reset video; I have to have power cycle the monitor in order to have the video come back. Also happens on Combat Arms when I get hit with a flashbang grenade.
    I changed the video card from the 8800 to the 9800 because the 8800 was extremely hot. 90C! Changing it out for the 9800 seemed to fix one game, not Bioshock or Combat Arms though. The 9800 runs cool, 50C max.
    CPU runs no higher than 35C. Memory - did x86 memtest. 3 passes, no errors. I swapped out the current set of Mushkins for another set, didn't solve it. Nothing's overclocked or manually adjusted. Air-cooled case also swapped for the Antec 900; there's plenty of circulation.
    I turned off the onboard sound and put in a Creative XFI card. No help. Swapped out the wifi card also - G --> N.
    I've changed everything except for the mobo, CPU, power, and monitor. None of these I look forward to replacing so, MSI peeps, help!~
    Thanks for reading.

    Hello and welcome,
    In bios, what is the frequency of your PCI-E bus, it should be 100.
    Did you try new drivers? Sometimes its a driver issue, since its only in a few games.
    Remove ALL drivers files, with for instance drivercleaner, reboot and install the latest ones from Nvidia site.
    Also, patch the games to the latest version, sometimes its a game problem.
    And last, try your computer on a different screen and see if problem persists
    Hi DaLoona,
    Thank you for your reply.
    PCI-E Freq. = 100
    Drivers= I have updated before to the newest drivers and wiped the previous with Drivercleaner but no difference noticed. I will try again with the latest drivers to be sure.
    Different monitor = yes, I will check that eventually.
    Thanks again,
    Bastiat

  • Problems with Halo Combat Evolved on mac mini server with HD3000 graphics

    There is frequent flickering of certain elements in the game (ie. background) and certain elements such as weapons are not rendered at all. This happens sporatically and not in a predictable manner. Does any body have any idea what is going on? I read that there are some issues with the HD3000 card on mac minis. I hope I did not make a purchase that I will regret.

    If I understand your question correctly, is there a reason you've replaced the integrated MySQL within Mac OS X Server with a second MySQL database implementation? (That's almost inherently going to get tangled; you'll need to shut off the default implementation.)
    Or is this a Perl module you've loaded and that is now tipping over? If you haven't replaced MySQL here, then have you started MySQL and run some tests with the database itself? This to make sure MySQL is operational, and that the problem you're working on is in the Perl pieces and not in the MySQL layer?
