Combine Files dialog and File Size

In the Combine Files dialog box, in the lower right corner, the File Size icons are Small, Default, and Large. These settings are very vague. Does anyone know what the actual settings are that these icons use?

Throw it away. Go to the [http://commons.apache.org/fileupload] and carefully read both 'User Guide' and 'Frequently Asked Questions' sections.
And please, please also carefully read this article: [http://balusc.blogspot.com/2008/06/what-is-it-with-roseindia.html].

  • Viewing combined file sizes?

    I'm new to the Mac, having come to it in the last couple of weeks from many many years of PC use.
    I have a question about Finder:
    In Windows Explorer, if you select a few files, the status bar at the bottom of the Explorer screen would tell you what the combined file size is of any files selected. I cannot seem to find a similar thing in Finder, is there a quick and easy way to do it?

    You can press Command-Option-I for the File Inspector, and leave it open. It will go away when you aren't using the finder, but will reappear whenever you go to the Finder, and will show the total size of any selected files.

  • Comparing count and combined file sizes of specific file types in target folder and subfolders

    Hi all,
    I have a script that I use to delete files with a certain file extension in a folder and its subfolders. I would like to enhance to the script by counting the total number of files and their combined size in MB that the script is deleting and use this information
    in a popup where a message will say something like "X No. Files deleted totalling YMB
    The existing script so far is:
    get-childitem  -include *.****.rfa -recurse | foreach ($_) {remove-item $_.fullname}
    Can any advise what I need to add as I'm quite new to powershell.
    Thanks

    So you do not know how to write a simple output statement.  I think you need to start here:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/scriptcenter/dd793612.aspx
    Not specifically within Powershell no, like I said I only started looking at it this week as an alternative to VBS.
    Nothing is being declared.  You need to learn the basics of PowerShell.  We cannot teach you one line at a time.
    Really? So the author of
    this website is talking rubbish is he? ("Once data is assigned to a PowerShell variable, it’s automatically declared.")
    I never asked for line-by-line hand holding nor am I someone who wants others to write the entire code for me. Examples of previous scripts that perform similar or partial operations would have been a good way to guide a new user unfamiliar to this topic.
    Additionally posting modified(incorrect) and unfinished script examples without clearly stating what your code is doing nor that additional lines of code need to be added before the script will operate as outlined in the original post is confusing to someone
    with 0 experience in this area.
    On forums I frequent that are relevant to subjects which I have good experience with, whenever I respond to a genuine query of that has an example of what they are trying to create/modify, I will happily provide a full example and/or explain what I
    have done so the OP understands exactly what I did to achieve their request in my example. For someone with your points tally (and likely a respected poster amongst your peers on this site) responding with what is essentially "RFTM Noob" I trust you can understand
    is somewhat disappointing.

  • Combining files in Acrobat Pro X

    I've been obliged to upgrade my Acrobat Pro 8.1.0 to Acrobat Pro X because of a switch to Windows 7 (conversion of non PDFs would not work).  One of my most used facilities was to put multiple files into a PDF Package such that each file could be identified and opened via a thumbnail.  In general, the combined file size was smaller than the sum of the constituents.  The only equivalent I've (yet) found in Acrobat X is the PDF Portfolio facility which is fine but gives a combined file size massively greater than the sum of the constituents.  As my primary aim is to minimise file size for emailing, is there an alternative equivalent to the PDF Package my former Acrobat version which still shows 'on top' all the contained files?

    Did you updates X or have 10.0.0? The updates are required for use with OFFICE 2010.

  • Why have file sizes in Pages increased since upgrading to latest version?

    Hi, I use Pages to compose a monthly newsletter for my yacht club. For that purpose I preferred it to Word because it was so easy to add, resize and position photographs. Before circulating the newsletter to club members, I convert the file to PDF format using the print as PDF option. Last year I was able to put 25 or so photos along with text over 5 pages and finish with a file size of less than 5 MB, which is about as big as I can send without dozens being bounced by members' email filters. Since upgrading my Mac to "Mountain Lion" (and then to "Mavericks") and upgrading Pages, I can't include more than 7 or 8 photos on 2 pages without going over my 5 MB limit. The finished file size seems to be two or three times the combined file sizes of the photos that I include.
    Any suggestions for reducing file size? I already use as low a photo resolution as I can.

    Peter - thank you so much for this very helpful reply. I had assumed that having "upgraded" I would be condemned to putting up with the Pages 5. I would never have thought of looking in the iWork folder for an older version. Needless to say I can't use Pages 09 to open documents written in pages 5 - but that's no loss. I note that January's newsletter was a hefty 15.5 MB in size, whereas December's, which contains more pages and many more photos was only 2.5 MB.
    Thanks again.
    Fruhulda - I look forward to reading more of the discussion of the last few months. Being new to the forum it may take me some time to find it.

  • Combine Files Dialog 8.1.6--drag and drop broken?

    I just reinstalled Acrobat 8, and the Combine Files panel is "all whacky".
    If I drag one or more documents into the panel, they are added normally. But if I then add another batch of 1 or documents, the FIRST SET OF DOCUMENTS is added again.
    To be clear, if I drag documents 1.tif, 2.tif, and 3.tif into the Combine Files panel, I end up with (as expected)
    1.tif
    2.tif
    3.tif
    But if I then drag documents 4.tif and 5.tif into the panel (or any other set of documents), I end up with
    1.tif
    2.tif
    3.tif
    1.tif
    2.tif
    3.tif
    Adding files through the file chooser panel works fine. Can someone tell me if this is peculiar to my installation or if it is a bug in Acrobat Pro 8.1.6?
    Thx

    Sort of the same here:
    I just noticed that the standard "drag and drop" in combination with "cmd + tab" to switch applications no longer works on my MacBook Pro. Whenever I try to drag pictures (e. g. jpg) from Safari into a Keynote 09 presentation (switching from Safari to Keynote using "cmd + tab"), the dragged image simply hangs and cannot be dropped into Keynote.
    And here's the _truly weird_ thing:
    When I then use "cmd + tab" again to switch to the next app again, the Keynote window stays on top and I can suddenly move and drop the dragged picture again. How strange is that?

  • Save as Reduced Size PDF and Save as Optimized PDF do not reduce the file size.  What gives?

    Save as Reduced Size PDF and Save as Optimized PDF do not reduce the file size.  What gives?  I used Acrobat 9 to do this for a long time.  I recently received new laptop loaded with with Acrobat 10 and it does not work the same.  I typically scan 8-10 pages of receipts, combine the files in Acrobat, and then optimize to reduce the size so I can upload with my expense report.  Typically, my files were reduced to 200-400 KB.  I have a 2 MB file that will not reduce at all.

    Bernd, thank you for your attempt to help but the option dialog windows do not contain the same options.  There are numerous other posts on this forum about this issue and there is no answer.  Clearly, there is an issue.  I have submitted this issue to our internal help desk.

  • A simple and free way of reducing PDF file size using Preview

    Note: this is a copy and update of a 5 year old discussion in the Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard discussions which you can find here: https://discussions.apple.com/message/6109398#6109398
    This is a simple and free solution I found to reduce the file size of PDFs in OS X, without the high cost and awful UI of Acrobat Pro, and with acceptable quality. I still use it every day, although I have Acrobat Pro as part of Adove Creative Cloud subscription.
    Since quite a few people have found it useful and keep asking questions about the download location and destination of the filters, which have changed since 2007, I decided to write this update, and put it in this more current forum.
    Here is how to install it:
    Download the filters here: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/41548940/PDF%20compression%20filters%20%28Un zip%20and%20put%20in%20your%20Library%20folder%29.zip
    Unzip the downloaded file and copy the filters in the appropriate location (see below).
    Here is the appropriate location for the filters:
    This assumes that your startup disk's name is "Macintosh HD". If it is different, just replace "Macintosh HD" with the name of your startup disk.
    If you are running Lion or Mountain Lion (OS X 10.7.x or 10.8.x) then you should put the downloaded filters in "Macintosh HD/Library/PDF Services". This folder should already exist and contain files. Once you put the downloaded filters there, you should have for example one file with the following path:
    "Macintosh HD/Library/PDF Services/Reduce to 150 dpi average quality - STANDARD COMPRESSION.qfilter"
    If you are running an earlier vesion of OS X (10.6.x or earlier), then you should put the downloaded filters in "Macintosh HD/Library/Filters" and you should have for example one file with the following path:
    "Macintosh HD/Library/Filters/Reduce to 150 dpi average quality - STANDARD COMPRESSION.qfilter"
    Here is how to use it:
    Open a PDF file using Apple's Preview app,
    Choose Export (or Save As if you have on older version of Mac OS X) in the File menu,
    Choose PDF as a format
    In the "Quartz Filter" drop-down menu, choose a filter "Reduce to xxx dpi yyy quality"; "Reduce to 150 dpi average quality - STANDARD COMPRESSION" is a good trade-off between quality and file size
    Here is how it works:
    These are Quartz filters made with Apple Colorsinc Utility.
    They do two things:
    downsample images contained in a PDF to a target density such as 150 dpi,
    enable JPEG compression for those images with a low or medium setting.
    Which files does it work with?
    It works with most PDF files. However:
    It will generally work very well on unoptimized files such as scans made with the OS X scanning utility or PDFs produced via OS X printing dialog.
    It will not further compress well-optimized (comrpessed) files and might create bigger files than the originals,
    For some files it will create larger files than the originals. This can happen in particular when a PDF file contains other optomizations than image compression. There also seems to be a bug (reported to Apple) where in certain circumstances images in the target PDF are not JPEG compressed.
    What to do if it does not work for a file (target PDF is too big or even larger than the original PDF)?
    First,a good news: since you used a Save As or Export command, the original PDF is untouched.
    You can try another filter for a smaller size at the expense of quality.
    The year being 2013, it is now quite easy to send large files through the internet using Dropbox, yousendit.com, wetransfer.com etc. and you can use these services to send your original PDF file.
    There are other ways of reducing the size of a PDF file, such as apps in the Mac App store, or online services such as the free and simple http://smallpdf.com
    What else?
    Feel free to use/distribute/package in any way you like.

    Thanks ioscar.
    The original link should be back online soon.
    I believe this is a Dropbox error about the traffic generated by my Dropbox shared links.
    I use Dropbox mainly for my business and I am pretty upset by this situation.
    Since the filters themsemves are about 5KB, I doubt they are the cause for this Dropbox misbehavior!
    Anyway, I submitted a support ticket to Dropbox, and hope everything will be back to normal very soon.
    In the meantime, if you get the same error as ioscar when trying to download them, you can use the link in the blog posting he mentions.
    This is out of topic, but for those interested, here is my understanding of what happened with Dropbox.
    I did a few tests yesterday with large (up to 4GB) files and Dropbox shared links, trying to find the best way to send a 3 hour recording from French TV - French version of The Voice- to a friend's 5 year old son currently on vacation in Florida, and without access to French live or catch up TV services. One nice thing I found is that you can directly send the Dropbox download URL (the one from the Download button on the shared link page) to an AppleTV using AirFlick and it works well even for files with a large bitrate (except of course for the Dropbox maximum bandwidth per day limit!). Sadly, my Dropbox shared links were disabled before I could send anything to my friend.
    I may have used  a significant amount of bandwidth but nowhere near the 200GB/day limit of my Dropbox Pro account.
    I see 2 possible reasons to Dropbox freaking out:
    - My Dropbox Pro account is wronngly identified as a free account by Dropbox. Free Dropbox accounts have a 20GB/day limit, and it is possible that I reached this limit with my testing, I have a fast 200Mb/s internet access.
    - Or Dropbox miscalculates used bandwidth, counting the total size of the file for every download begun, and I started a lot of downloads, and skipped to the end of the video a lot of times on my Apple TV.

    I need to export a photo at around 1meg file size,and dont seem to be able to do it in the presets can anyone help please ,I shoot on a canon 5d

    I believe Frank is referring to the end use (e.g., for print or on-screen use).
    Until he returns, I can tell you that I ran a quick test using an image from the Aperture 3 training book library which was as follows:
    Camera = Canon EOS 5D Mark II
    Master resolution = 5616 x 3744 (21 MP)
    I was able to export to a JPEG with end file size of 1 MB as follows:
    Export Presets drop-down > select 'Edit' option
    Selected preset name 'JPEG - 50% of Original Size' > change percentage value to 40% > change DPI value to '300' > click OK to set as current default > Export version to desktop.
    The exported JPEG has a resolution of 2246 x 1498 and appears on screen to have the same image quality of the original in Aperture.
    Note - I did not change the default Image Quality slider in the Export Preset dialog (which left it at 10).
    Basically, you will need to play around with the settings until you find the appropriate values to arrive at an image version you want.

  • How can I auto export a PDF File using the "Smallest File Size" preset and set the Exported File Name based on information from an Imported PDF?

    Greetings all,
    I am trying to create a script to automate a PDF export process for my company for inDesign. I’m fairly new to inDesign itself and have no previous experience with javascript, although I did take C++ in high school and have found it helpful in putting this code together.
    We have an inDesign template file and then use the Multi-page PDF importer script to import PDF files. We then have to export two version of each file that we import, then delete the imported file and all of the pages to reset the template. This has to be done for nearly 1000 pdf files each month and is quite tedious. I’m working on automating the process as much as possible. I’ve managed to piece together code that will cleanup the file much quicker and am now trying to automate the PDF exports themselves.
    The files are sent to us as “TRUGLY#####_Client” and need to be exported as “POP#####_Client_Date-Range_North/South.pdf”
    For example, TRUGLY12345_Client needs to be exported as POP12345_Client_Mar01-Mar31_North and POP12345_Client_Mar01-Mar31_South.
    There are two templates built into the template file for the north and south file that are toggled easily via layer visibility switches. I need to get a code that can ideally read the #s from the imported Trugly file as well as the Client and input those into variables to use when exporting. The date range is found in the same place in the top right of each pdf file. I am not sure if this can be read somehow or if it will have to be input manually. I can put North or South into the file name based on which template layer is visible.
    I am not sure how to go about doing this. I did find the following code for exporting to PDF with preset but it requires me to select a preset and then type the full file name. How can I set it to automatically use the “Smallest File Size” preset without prompting me to choose and then automatically input some or preferably all of the file name automatically? (If the entire filename is possible then I don’t even want a prompt to appear so it will be fully automated!)
    PDF Export Code (Originally from here: Simple PDF Export with Preset selection | IndiSnip [InDesign® Snippets]):
    var myPresets = app.pdfExportPresets.everyItem().name;
    myPresets.unshift("- Select Preset -");
    var myWin = new Window('dialog', 'PDF Export Presets');
    myWin.orientation = 'row';
    with(myWin){
        myWin.sText = add('statictext', undefined, 'Select PDF Export preset:');
        myWin.myPDFExport = add('dropdownlist',undefined,undefined,{items:myPresets});
        myWin.myPDFExport.selection = 0;
        myWin.btnOK = add('button', undefined, 'OK');
    myWin.center();
    var myWindow = myWin.show();
    if(myWindow == true && myWin.myPDFExport.selection.index != 0){
        var myPreset = app.pdfExportPresets.item(String(myWin.myPDFExport.selection));
        myFile = File(File.saveDialog("Save file with preset: " + myPreset.name,"PDF files: *.pdf"));
        if(myFile != null){
            app.activeDocument.exportFile(ExportFormat.PDF_TYPE, myFile, false, myPreset);
        }else{
            alert("No File selected");
    }else{
        alert("No PDF Preset selected");
    So far my code does the following:
    1) Runs the Multi-Page PDF Import Script
    2) Runs PDF Export Script Above
    3) Toggles the Template
    4) Runs #2 Again
    5) Deletes the imported PDF and all pages and toggles template again.
    It’s close and much better than the original process which was almost 100% manual but I’d like to remove the Preset prompt from the PDF script and have it automatically select the “Smallest File Size” preset. and then if there’s a way to have it auto-fill in the file name so no user input is required at all other than selecting each file to import. (If there’s a way to setup a batch action for the multi-import script that would be even better!)
    Thanks in advance and if there’s anything else I can provide that would help please let me know! Even a nudge in the right direction will be a big help!

    If you hold down the option key, it will typically show the location. Or you can often hit option-return on the file and it will reveal the file in the Finder, instead of opening it.
    Final option is to open it, and just option-click the filename in the toolbar of Preview and it should show you the location.
    It's probably an attachment to an email you've received. If you have Mail set to cache emails and their attachments it'll be stashed in a subdirectory of ~/Library/Mail. Which is fine.

  • How do I find out what the file size is before I purchase and download a movie?

    I cannot find the file size for movies or TV shows anywhere on iTunes. I need to know how big the file is before I download it.

    What is "Other"
    It’s generally a combination of local caches from apps, browsers, mail, Messages, Reading List, saved games, app-specific documents and data, notes, and voice memos.
    You can backup and restore to reduce "other" but they will start building up over time.

  • How to show a downloads file size in the "Save As" dialog?

    Hello,
    I have been using Firefox off and on for the last year or so, and there's one thing that always gets me to stop using it, whenever I download a file I cant see the file size of it in the "Save As" dialog, Internet Explorer and Opera has this feature and it's one of the things that I really need, I have tried that extension that does this (I forget the name of it), but unfortunately it is not for Firefox 4 :(
    Thanks you for your help :)

    Hi,
    Visit the following link for you addon:
    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/show-file-size/
    This addon is incompatible for Firefox 4.0 RC. but you can add another addon in firefox to make it work: Addon Compatibility reporter. 1st install this addon and then install your " Show file size addon" it should work then.

  • How do I scan large black and white documents, creating the smallest file size possible?

    I am attempting to scan a 70 page document and prefer it to be a file small enough to send through regular email.  I am not interested in zipfiles, i am not familiar with them.  I have been scanning and converting to .pdf for years, using the lowest dpi reasonable, but my file sizes are still quite large (compared to other .pdf's that are emailed to me).  I know there is a way, just haven't figured it out.

  • Is there a Maximum file size limit when combining pdf files

    I am trying to combine files 8 PDF files created with i Explore using Acrobat XI Standard, the process is completed but when opening the file not all 8 individual files have been combined only the first two have been combined, the process shows all eight being read and combined.
    I can open and view each of the original 8 individual files and read the content without any issue, the largest of the eight files is 15,559kb and the smallest is 9,435kb
    if anyone can assist that would be most appreciated

    Hi Tayls450,
    This should not have happened as there is no maximum file size limit when combining PDFs.
    Please let me know if there are some password protected PDFs also?
    Also, I would suggest you to choose 'Repair Acrobat Installation' option from the Help menu.
