Combine instances on Windows 7 taskbar

Question

Is there any way to get Reader X to only have a single entry on the W7 taskbar, regardless of the number of open documents?  I use the small icon, which keeps the label, but I would be much happier with just a single button instead of 4 or 5.  It doesn't even seem to be observing the option to open links in the same window.
In particular, there is a documentation set which I use a lot which is a whole series of PDFs with a top level page that is a page of links.  Currently, I am working on a beta for this product, so I have both the top page for the last regular release and for the beta (beta doc is incomplete, so one needs the other for some things).  With one or two manuals open for each, that is a lot of buttons on the task bar.

Yes, but small icons and no labels makes it hard to tell some applications apart.
My preference, really, which is why this question is on an Adobe forum and not a Windows forum, is to make the choice application by application.   Multiple instances of Explorer are useful because the label provides a clue as to which instance is sitting where in the filesystem.  Multiple instances of Firefox likewise because I can tell which is which.  Multiple copies of Word I don't want because I sometimes have a lot of documents open and it is better to just switch windows in the application.  Likewise Excel.
On my old box, I was reading this same documention in Acrobat Professional 8 and it would obey the open cross links in the same window option.  Thus, I could start with the top page and open three or four manuals and only have one entry on the task bar.  If I had two sets at the same time, like I do now with regular release and beta, then I might have two, one for each top level page.  Now I have 5 because I have two top level and three manuals open.
