Combining 1080i and 1080p HDV footage on single timeline, for SD output?

Hi All
Help! I'm a cameraperson/director who was has just shot a largeish doccie project on a Sony HVR-V1E. My technical background is in stills, so I hope you'll forgive some ignorance here.
BACKGROUND: The vast majority of the footage was shot HDV using the 25fps prog scan mode on the camera. I really don't like interlace jaggies and I was advised that this was the obvious way of getting away from them, and made for very useable footage when output as standard def interlaced PAL. However, some footage for the project was also shot on a small Sony HDR-HC9 (PAL) camera. The HC9 has no progressive scan mode, i.e. this footage is 1080i50.
The primary broadcaster for this doccie requires delivery on Beta SP, standard def PAL. Because of the 16:9 aspect ratio of the HDV format, the film will be delivered letterboxed, black above and below.
THE MAIN QUESTION: We'll be editing in FCP 6.0 . My editor is more of an Avid person, and is concerned that without proper setup we'l end up with issues later on when we downsize to SD, especially because we'll be combining prog-scanned footage with interlace-scanned footage. We need to know whether to set the sequence presets as HDV 1080i50 or HDV 1080p25.
We're planning to edit as an HDV project and downscale to SD using Compressor. I know this downscaling is likely to take a long time, however we've been advised that editing in HDV is less intensive than going the ProRes route, and the quality of the Compressor downscale is better than that of the other 'within FCP' options.
I've been advised to set the sequence preset to i50, but I'm not sure if Compressor has a harder time resizing interlaced footage than progressive footage. Common sense tell me it'll be easier to resize a progressive frame and then split it into two interlaced fields without artifacts, than resizing and regenerating interlaced fields from 1080 down to PAL dimensions. However, if the sequence preset is p25, will FCP deal with the bits of i50 footage in the project OK?
Also, I've been told but cannot confirm that the Sony HVR-V1E camera scans progressively in 25fps prog scan mode, but encodes each progressively-scanned image as two interlaced fields on the tape, i.e. as 1080i50 images. Is this true? If so, it would surely mean that the sequence preset should be 1080i50 with progressive-scanned imagery emanating from this model of camera.

Hi,
FCP is open format timeline based, so it will transcode the footage according to the first clip on the timeline. so it will not be a problem for two different formats. i've used DVCAM, HDV formats together it has done for me nicely.
but check the result before proceding further ahed in edit in both preset format.
and using Compressor is not a good idea for broadcast I believe, it is ok if there is no other option is with you. It is better to do it with the hardware rather than software.
I use realtime Blackmagic hardware for down converting HD to SD with letterbox directly to tape.

    Hi.
    I have one scene in an upcoming short film shot on the sony HVR-Z1 camera (50 interlaced), and the rest of the film is shot on the JVC GY-HD100 camera (24 progressive). I need everything in one timeline, and eventually out in a single sequence full-resolution format. How do I integrate the two?
    Can I use the same custom 24p Apple Intermediate codec for all of the editing? I assume this is impossible as the sony material is interlaced? How can I get a satisfactory agreement between the 2 with as little image-quality compromise as possible?
    Will there be a great deal of difference in the look of the 2 formats? The aspect ratio? Any suggestions on how best to hide the differences? I'm pretty new at this, so apologies if I am asking silly questions?

    Hi there. Thanks for your prompt reply. I am aware that as of yet I´m unable to capture directly to FCP with the JVC. I have bought some mediating software which allows me to do so, called Lumiere.
    What I have at the moment is compressed MP2 files and I am working with their xml counterpart files in FCP with the Apple Intermediate Codec. I am wondering however, how to get the material out into as fully a decompressed format as possile for color correction, sound synching etc?
    I have noticed that even in this recommended intermediate codec the material doesn´t play consistently in my viewer. There are lags and freezes, as well as unsynched stretches of audio. I have 2 choices for printing to tape. I can use either a sony HDV deck or the JVC camera itself. I haven´t a decklink card at present so I am wondering what my best option is (format wise) for succesful transfer via firewire to tape?
    What kind of size are we talking for a 4 to 5 minute decompressed HDV clip when rendered as a stand alone finished sequence?
    My intention is of course to have the best image res in the finished hard copy, and I am admittedly new with this sort of thing, having only rendered and edited in DV before. Any suggestions or help would be appreciated.

  • 5dmk2 and z1 HDV footage

    I’m shooting a film which is being shot on a 5dmk2 we have also used a z1e which is a HDV 1080 50i camera. I’m going to be editing it on a macbook pro running final cut studio 2.
    The intension is to use the 5donly footage however if we where to mix the HDV and 5d footage what would be the best work flow.
    I was intending to transfer the 5d footage to proress using stream clip and I was going to do the edit at 30p and then convert to 25p. If do mix the HDV footage what the best workflow for this?. Thanks for any help

    *I read about the Bonsai method for HDV to DVD and that sounds great, but I also read that since I'm going to DVD I might as well down convert to SD and do the rest with anamorphic settings.*
    The best approach? I would convert it to ProRes and get the hardware to run it.
    Or use a custom preset in Compressor and go to DVCProHD progressive.
    It will take forever, but fabulous on a SD DVD.

  • Combining MPEG1 and miniDV camcorder footage

    I have been using a Panasonic GS180 3CCD camcorder (miniDV tapes) and a Sony DSC-P200 camera to record footage of various carnivals. I use the Sony camera when I am performing as its small and the MPEG1 movies are okay quality for my purposes. I use the camcorder at other times.
    I use MPEG Streamclip to demux the MPEG clips (best quality Quicktime export) so the audio is available in FCE HD 3.5.1.
    I export the edited film to disk (quicktime movie) and use iDVD to render and burn to disk (PAL format).
    I have noticed that the footage from the MPEG clips seems to run a bit faster as if its slightly sped up.
    I suspect this is a problem with frame rates. The MPEG is 30 frames per second and the PAL rendering is 25 fps.
    What would be the best way to sort out this problem?

    Does the P200 shoot at 30 or at 25? When you convert the material using MPEG Streamclip, convert it to the correct frame rate.

  • Which sequence for a combination of 1080i and DV PAL footage?

    I am editing a documentary where the majority of the footage is 1920 X 1080i (shot on a Sony EX1). There is some DV footage in there as well at 720 X 576 anamorphic.
    If my sequence is set for the 1080i footage I have to scale up my DV material to the point where it looks unacceptable. Should I use a 720P sequence which would mean scaling my DV footage much less and shrink my 1080i footage for a 1280 x 720 frame? I assume there is no loss in quality in scaling down from 1080 to 720? My final output needs to be 1280 X 720 movie anyway so am I right in saying there is no point using a 1080 sequence on this occasion?
    Also, downside of a 720 sequence with 1080 footage is that everything takes forever to render? Any ways round this?

    Were it my project, I'd use a 1080i sequence and upscale the DV.
    You are correct in stating your options. It's up to you which you choose.

  • Mixing interlaced and progressive HDV footage?

    Is anyone mixing interlaced and progressive footage on a FCP 5 timeline? Would you set the timeline up for progressive or interlaced settings? Would there be any loss in quality? I'm specifically wondering how well the true progressive of the JVC HD100 would combine with the "faux" progressive of the Canon A1.

    I was hoping someone else would jump in with answers, because I am not familiar with either camera, and can't give you a definite answer, but I would hazard a guess that if you set both cameras to a 1/30th shutter, you would be able to mix the footage, but it would be very difficult to shoot, because it is such a slow shutter.
    Other routes, would be converting the footage using compressors advanced formats conversion, and other tricks on the timeline, with removing fields and blending etc.
    I think generally though, if you were going to intercut footage, you would notice it, at some level.
    Some tests would help you enormously, as would renting a second camera identical to the first.

    I am new with these type of codec, plus which one is better for a pal projects not NTSC. Also I want to know if there would be any problems when I take a project that is done in Pal and move it to NTSC would there be some frame problems.

    I like the p footage better because it looks more like film, plays better on the computer, and looks better in web streams... as far as going to NTSC in the end, Compressor's "advanced format conversions" or Graeme Nattress' Standards converter does a fine job of PAL to NTSC... Edit in the native format you've shot though, then in the end do the standards conversion. You needn't worry about anything special here...

    But you would have to render one or the other depending what you sequence settings are.
    Not with FCP 6 David. You can mix formats on the same timeline without rendering. That is the point of the mixed format timeline. BUT...he is right, eventually, before you output, you will have to render something. If your sequence settings are DVCPRO HD, then the HDV will have a light or dark green render bar above it. WOrkable for editing, but in the end you will have to render before you output.
    Now mixing FRAME RATES...that is another story.

  • Combining documents with multiple layouts into a single book for pdf export

    I have made a series of documents that feature 3 different layouts, however I would like to connect all these documents into a book and then export 1 layout style from each document into a pdf to form a book. However when I go to the export book as pdf the option to select pages or ranges is greyed out and not clickable for some reason, does anyone know of another way to get around this short of exporting each individual document layout and then merging them as a pdf?

    You need to set up the book to contain precisely what you want to export.
    However, it is basically better to export single documents and merging them later as PDF, regarding colour spaces, page numbering, paragraph styles, page formats etc.

    I am running with Finalcust 6. I need to buy a new camera. I do have the Canon HV30. Can I import in the same project footage with the format HD1080i  and  HD 1080p from different cameras?

    Avoid mixing them if you can. If you do have both edit in 1080i to maintain the resolution of that media. Anything that's 1080p and needs to be rendered will become interlaced.

    I wonder why my PAL one doesn't do 24p?
    Normal HDV will work perfectly with FCE except it will have to be converted into the Apple Intermediate Codec.
    The Easy Setup is "HDV-Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i60".
    I don't think shooting in HDV and then converting to SD DV will look any better than normal SD but you will have the HDV master tape which can be used to produce Blu-ray DVDs at a later date when they become cheaper and more popular.
    An hour of AIC will take around 40 GB of HD space.
    As with everything it is worth doing quick tests involving something unimportant to determine which workflow suits you. Use DVD-RWs when testing to avoid waste.
    Remember that you can export your HDV edited project back to tape in your camera and connect it to an HD TV for high definition playback.
    I am not too keen on this because of the extra wear it puts on the camera and tape.

  • Choosing between 720p and 1080p on Mini connected to Sony HDTV (1920x1080)

    I have a late 2009 Mac Mini and a SONY HDTV and had no difficulties at all in hooking them up. I just connected the Mini Display Port to DVI connector which ships with the MAC Mini to a Belkin DVI to HDMI cable (also available from Apple Store) and connected the HDMI to my TV. I switched on the TV, selected the correct HDMI input, then switched on the Mac Mini and could see the picture immediately. I was missing the menu bar at the top so went to SYSTEM PREFERENCES and then DISPLAYS and the OPTIONS tab, and unselected OVERSCAN, and that gave me a perfect picture (slightly smaller than full screen but perfectly adequate as far as I'm concerned).
    By default my resoluton was set at 1080p (presumably the Mac detected that the native resolution of my TV is 1080p). The DISPLAYS box shows a number of resolution with a little TV screen icon beside them, as if suggesting those resolutions for use with the Sony. It shows 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i and 1080p. There are also lots of others without TV icons beside them.
    The only problem I found is that 1080p made it quite difficult to read text on my screen, even though it's not very far away from the sofa. My eyesight is very good but I couldn't read the screen comfortably when surfing the net or even when changing settings etc. I swiiched, therefore, to 720p and this produces a very comfortable size of text for using the MAC.
    My question is whether it really makes such a big difference whether one chooses 720p or 1080p, as I really can't see much difference for playback of video from Hulu or other streaming websites. Even when I played a DVD movie from the Mac Mini superdrive, the difference in quality was hard to detect. I guess if I tried viewing Full 1080p HD material, there would be some difference, but how much of such material is available on the net anyway? I take it that switching between 720p and 1080p wouldn't cause any harm, if I chose to do so occasionally for watching any Full HD movies that I rip?

    Hi- I also picked up a mini a week ago, and have it hooked up to my Sony HDTV via HDMI, just as you. The same thing happened the first time I connected the mini to my tv- with overscan on, the top and bottom of the screen were cut off.
    The solution is to pick up your Sony remote, go to the onscreen menus, and make sure that 'full pixels' option is selected. When you do, the screen will be absolutely perfectly aligned.
    I mention this because while in overscan mode, I find that the Sony makes an absolutely beautiful screen, and text is quite easy to read, albeit a bit small.

  • 1080i versus 1080p display - Mini Mac & 46" LC-46D62U SHARP monitor?

    We solved our scattered image resolution problem on our new 46" SHARP LCD monitor running on a mini mac (Thanks to BSteely's recommendations).
    But we are working with a 1080i resolution by lack of having the option available to set it to 1080p. The mini mac doesn't offer it by default. We are recommended to use switchResX because there is something in the Intel driver for the GMA 950 graphics that picks up on the fact that it is connected to a TV and not a normal monitor that causes it to limit the mini's output to 1080i.
    Can anyone or you BSteely share your experience with the software? Is it free? Is it worth it? Will be have more of our money worth: meaning more visible quality going through the process of switching from 1080i to 1080p? Any risk for us to mess up the resolution we were able to obtain so fare (after lots of struggling)?
    What is the real difference between 1080i and 1080p? Why are TV's with the 1080p capability more expensive?

    Probably you are dealing with two seperate issues. One is handled from the TV's side and one is handled from the mini's side. First, on the TV, set the View Mode to "Dot by Dot". Refer to the TV's user guide for how to set that mode. That should get rid of jaggy artifacts you mention.
    Second, on the mini, it is widely reported that 1080p does not always show up within Displays preferences as expected. Or sometimes 1080p is in fact being sent even when the mini says the resolution is 1080i. It's hard to say which is the case.
    Those times when 1080p is not offered as a selection within Displays preferences, others have had success to get it to show up by going into Displays preferences and selecting the "Show displays in menu bar" option. Then, under the resulting menu bar icon that looks like a display, scroll down to "Number of Recent Items" and select 5, or even try 10. For some people, doing this has caused a second 1080 resolution to show up, where the second one is 1080p. A reboot may be required to get this to work.
    To check if the mini is outputting 1080p or not, I believe you can check this from the TV by hitting the DISPLAY button on the TV's remote. It should report what it thinks is the format of the incoming video signal. Good luck.

  • External hdmi 1080i vs 1080p

    1) try as I might, the MBA only gives choices up to 1920x1080 (interlaced) and does not give an option for 1080p on an external monitor.
    2) is there a published specification for the MBA which specifically states that 1080p is NOT available? Everything I have found simply states "1920x1080" without specifying interlace/non-interlace.

    Thanks for the suggestion. I just tried it with two different external monitors with the same results: (1) the pull down menu does have two separate 1920x1080 choices (as you noted) neither is designated 1080i or 1080p -- when one is selected, the monitor reports 1080i, when the other is selected the monitor reports 1080p !
    next question(s): (1) why is the "prefs" UI broken? (2) why does the drop down menu fail to distinguish between 1080i and 1080p ?
