Combining FCE Project Files Contents

I started a wedding project on my external hard drive (importing footage via imovie as I can't import direct to FCE, probably due to slippage on the camera - not sure that's relevant though). The pins on the power cable snapped. While waiting for a replacement cable (ages!) I carried on the project on my imac hard drive. My external drive is now back in action, so I would like to now combine what I have on the wedding project on my imac, with what I started on my external drive - and carry on from there as I still have some footage to import and edit.
I think I am ok moving the media clips across (which I have on the imac desk top) to the capture scratch on the external drive. My question is around what to do about the project file on the imac. Can I somehow combine that with the original project file on the external hard drive?
Or am I trying to approach this the wrong way?

Thanks very much for this Ian. I am quite new to FCE, so just to check my understanding - unlike imovie, FCE projects have a media file (containing the movie clips) and a separate project file containing all the references to how the clips have been edited etc?
If I just copy over the timeline of the continued project on my imac over to the original project on the external hard drive, does that mean the clips and the reference info will all be copied over and will automatically then live in the original media and project files respectively?
And even more basic - to copy over, do I just click into the timeline, go Edit, Select All (which will pick up video and audio tracks) and then Edit, Copy - and then paste into the timeline of the original project?
Apologies if this is all rather lame!

  • How can I PRINT folders from FCE project files?

Over five years of underwater videography I have accumulated several TB of footage, organized into FCE project files by ocean locale and further sorted by subject matter in "clips" folders in the project files.  I use the "log note" field for descriptions, eg scenery, vertebrates, invertebrates, divers.
I understand the product incompatibilities that make my FCE project files unreadable by other software, and I am also beginning to doubt that I can keep my late 2007 MBP running indefinitely.  So I want to generate a hard-copy directory to my media drives by printing out the contents of my "clips" folders.  While I still can...
Thanks for any ideas or suggestions on how to do this.

Meg, do you happen to know which versions of FCP will import FCE 3.5 projects?  Apparently Adobe Premiere Pro will import FCP projects but not FCE - the format needs to be XML, which FCE does not generate.
There's some old FCP software available from 3rd party sellers but I know there are incompatibilities between versions of FCP & FCE of  different ages, and would like to avoid them.
If I can make my projects accessible to another editing program, even if it's a lot of work, I'd be happy to leave FCE behind at this point...

  • Help! FCE project files converted to unix executable files

I recently added a USB external drive and put my FCE project files on it. When I rebooted, the files now are unrecognizable by Final Cut Express as project files. In the finder they are now recognized only as unix executable files. Is there any way to reverse this problem. I really can't afford to lose all that work! Thanks

How is the drive formatted? If it's not Mac formatted you may have a problem. It may be recoverable. How many project files are you talking about? What about the media?

  • Why can't I open a FCE project file that I have saved? (It now says ZERO kb

    Hello...
I have just started working on a project in Final Cut Express - I render, save, and close out of FCE - but, when I go back to FCE, the project I was working on does not open.
Why can't I open a project file that I have saved?
Here was my process in a nutshell:
~ When I opened FCE, I went the System Preferences and set the Scratch Disks to a folder on my external hard drive.
~Then, I went to File - New Project - worked on the project for a while (including creating bins, importing images and video, and creating a sequence.
~I saved the project file to the same folder that I set my Scratch Disks to.
    as often throughout this process.)
~When I was done, I saved again andd closed FCE.
~Then, soon after, I opened FCE again and my project did not open automatically.
~So, I clicked File - Open Recent - browsed to and chose the project file name and FCE gave me a "Unable to open file" message.
~When I check to see if the project file actually saved to my external hard drive, the name appears, but it says the file size is ZERO kb.
I have done this twice with the same unfortunate result. What am I doing wrong? I have worked on FCE on this same computer before, setting the Scratch Disks the same way, and I did not have this problem.
Please help. Thank you so much for your feedback.

Are you sure you are trying to open the project file you actually saved ?
Try using Spotlight to search for your project file name. I might be wrong, but I guess you try to open an empty copy while your real project file (what you saved) is somewhere else in either your startup disk (Documents folder ?) or the external drive. If so do not use Open Recent in FCE but simply double click the "real" project file.

  • FCE project files won't open. General error message.

All of a sudden nearly all my project files refuse to open. Even when I try to open previous backups the same thing happens. General error! These files have been ok for at least the last 2 years. What could have caused this and can I get these years of work back? Please help.

Used FCS Remover and re-installed but still get same result. Except that on first attempt to start FCE, after error message appeared, FCE carried on briefly showing 'Profiling for RT Extreme…' and a percentage. When it reached 100% it stopped immediately. Tried the whole process more than once. The first time an app called File Defense (in demo mode) showed an attempt to write to a .rsrc file when AU Pitch was reached. Have removed File Defense. Also logging in with shift key down to prevent any login items from loading. Logic Express 8 is installed and uses AU files but I don't know how to uninstall it.

  • 2 complete FCE projects, files moved or missing, and memory full----help!

    I have a
    MacBook Pro version 10.4.10
Processor: 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory: 2GB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM
    and purchased the FCE HD.
After completing FCE projects-exporting to iMovie-sharing it over to iDVD-and burn to DVD, I was and is still in a blur from what happens next.
When I tried to create another FCE project, it said low disc space, so I purchased a 160GB Seagate, and attempted to copy the finished FCE projects into the Seagate, but when I try and open the project so I'm certain if I need to go back and edit or burn another DVD, it will be there, then it says there are files missing, or error code 1309.
I then got nervous, read through the FCE .pdf for assistance, started moving files around, trying to copy whatever over to the external. Now, when I try and open the existing project, I can't
I may be over cautious, but because of it, I've used up all my memory. Now, I can't open the projects because I've moved the files around.
Right now, I am at a halt. Can anyone help me please, is there a way for me to reorganize my files so that I can open my existing FCE project as the final product, and then archive and move to the external drive, and still be able to open, edit, and burn again? I'm trying to clear the memory from harddrive so I can work on add'l FCE projects.
When I check Disk Utility for my Macintosh HD, the capacity is 148.7GB, and my available is 479.7 MB.
The 160GB Seagate's capacity is 149.0 GB, and the available is 93.0GB.
    Thank you for any assistance.

When you purchased the Seagate, did you format it Mac OS Extended?
    -Go into Disk Utility
    -Select the disk
-Make sure all your files are off the drive before you do this:
-Change Format to Mac OS Extended.

  • Backing up FCE project/files- any easy way?

I'm new to FCE 3.5.1 and could use some educatin'
Before FCE was working in Imovie. The project file was a "package" which (I think had the clips, sound, etc. in one back-up able file.
Upon install of FCE, there are folders all over the place: mostly in my Documents folder: Audio Render Files, Autosave Vault, Capture Scratch, Render Files, Thumbnail Cache Files, Waveform Cache Files. Sheeesh....
So my question is: I start a new "project" and save that project to a folder to my desktop, it has the .fce file in there that seems quite small.
What is the best way to back up a project if I just want to back up to som dvd's or even a cheap HD.
Along the same lines, how would I "copy" a project to work on a machine at another location with FCE.
I've seen some stuff about this but so far it seems incomprehensible.
    Any help appreciated.
    Jonathan

    Victor.
Thanks so much for the help. Right now I have the two HD in my G5, on is for apps, files, just about everything, and only has 17GB of space left. My second internal drive I use just as a back-up/parking space for stuff until I get around to burning something to removable media.
That drive has about 30GB left on it, and much more if I delete a bunch of stuff I don't need, so I will make this disk my "scratch" disk" for the large media files, like clips, photoshop, livetype, sound, etc.
The project file (the small FCE express file) I'll work with on the other drive.
A question I have for you or anyone that could answer this: To work on a video project on another mac off location running FCE, I know that I need to copy the project file. I'm assuming I must also copy all the media files as well, correct? Am I just looking for one particular folder that has these things in them? Or do I need to copy every folder that FCE generated as well?
The system at my other location has only one HD, therefore the scratch disk will be the main drive. Do I just copy the stuff that is on the "transport" drive to the new location computer's HD?
I'm assuming that if I do the above, there will be some prompt telling me that there are a whole bunch of things that need to be reconnected. Is that correct?
Thanks again. I look forward to your replies.

  • Storing FCE project files

Using an iMac with a Glyph external drive. I have been storing the project file on the internal hard drive and media files on the external drive. However, when I tried to store the project file on the external drive (along with the media files) so I could carry it home and work on it, the project would not reopen. When I try to launch it from the external drive project file the error message says "Cannot open file."
Storing the project file on an external drive works fine with the MacBook Pro. What's the answer?

    Hi
Works for me - but there are some important things
    • It must be exactly same version of FinalCut version no. and Express or Pro
    • In my external hard disk I've got a movie folder named after project and in this all scratch disks goes
    Audio Render Files - folder
    Autosave Vault - folder
    Capture Scratch - folder
    Render files - folder
    Thumbnail Cache Files - folder
    Waveform - folder
Project document - eg Named in accordings to project
    plus two extra folders
    Pictures (.jpg photos)
    Audios (,aiff audio to project)
    And external drive
    • MUST BE - Mac OS Extended formatted - nothing else will work for video
    • And is FireWire - AS USB/USB2 performs badly to me.

  • Unable to open project file. even though I just saved it.

    Hi,
I just started back to work on a little FCE 2 video project after a couple of months. When I went to load the file, it said "Unable to open project file". I thought, "hmmm, I'm a beginner, maybe I'm not opening the right file." So, I made a new project with a clip and save it. Then I tried to reopen it. No go. Same message.
So, something is wrong but I can't figure it out.
My preferences are set to save the file on an external hd. The file icon shows up but says that the FCE project file has 0KB. How can that be?
I look using spotlight for the file, thinking maybe the file was saved elsewhere. It doesn't show up.
Sorry if this subject has been treated before. I searched the forum and didn't find a problem that matched my circumstances. One that was close.
Thanks for any help you can give.
    Doug

    Thanks for your reply Kyriakos.
Yep, I've tried the files in the AutoSave Vault and still Unable to Open Project File.
Also tried deleting the FCE preference and cache file, fixing permissions and doing a save as instead of a straight save, as outlined in the article below:
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/good_apps_gonebad.html
It only has worked on one project which is the only file that opens now.
It's driving me nuts! I'm going to start doing some major jobs soon and can't have this happen. Maybe I'll try to reinstall FCE then if no luck it's time for a refund.
Would upgrading from FCE 1 to HD have anything to do with it?
Have you had any luck, Doug?

  • How to connect two iMacs to the same FCE project?

    Hello All,
Right now I have an iMac that is about 1 year old. I'm about to purchase another iMac. What I want to do is run FCE on both and work on the same video project on both. Is this possible?
So the idea would be that I one person A could color correct and person B could edit and perform other functions on the second iMac. Can you hook them up by firewire and do this or is this beyond what you can do with FCE and two iMacs?
    Thanks for your help.
    Mike

    Hello Michael,
First, you will need two fully licensed copies of FCE, one for each iMac. Each license allows you to install FCE on 1 Apple desktop + 1 Apple laptop as long as you own both computers and do not use FCE on both at the same time. But it *does not* allow you to install it on 2 Apple desktop computers (eg iMacs).
Second, in order for two people on different computers to access the same project, you would have to store all the media & scratch files in a common location, and set up each copy of FCE to access the files from that location. The problems with this approach are 1) FCE cannot do this over a network, 2) you cannot connect an external FW drive to both computers at the same time, 3) FCE prefers that your FCE Project file(s) be on your system HD.
You could use an external FW drive to store your media & scratch files; then connect the FW drive to the computer that is going to work on the project - but not to 2 computers at the same time. You will still have to copy the FCE project file between the two iMacs each time you swap from one to the other for editing.

  • Why is FCP Studio saving my Autosave Vault files as FC Express project files?

I have had FCPro Studio for some time now and haven't used my FC Express software for a long time, but somehow in the Autosave Vault folder, my project is being saved as a Final Cut Express Project File.  And if I try to open one of them it only produces a Error message.  How did this happen?  Is there someplace that remembers how I used to save FCE files and defaults to that or what?  I can't find anyplace in the Preferences or Settings that tell it how to save things.  Help if you can.  Thanks

Thanks for the heads up Tom on Andy's idea.  I like what Andy recommended, as I see that it will probably do the job to right the problem, however, before I do it... I do have projects that I haven't finished in FCE and don't want them messed up if ALL files will now open as FCP.  What do I do to keep things separate OR would it be better to just upgrade those projects to FCP and finish them there.  It is definitely a better program. Will the FCE projects suffer any ill effects by now being FCP projects?  OR should I just finish them in FCE and how do I keep them as such if I do the Cmd I change for the other files that need to be changed?
    Thanks, Andy and Tom,
    Jon
PS.  I changed ONE of the files that was from my FCP project and was being saved as a FCE project file and I DIDN"T change all, just the one.  This seems to be one way to keep all the other FCE project files as they should be.  I could just change one by one, only the Autosave Vault files in my FCP project that I need, and so preserve the projects that are FCE projects from changing.  First-is this a good work flow and Second-How do I get the Autosave Vault to, from now on - save my FCP project files AS FCP project files?
    Thanks

  • FCE project won't open timeline, browser, etc

    Hi guys,
Suddenly when I try to open a FCE project, it only plays the finished project. The browser, timeline, canvass, etc are blank like a new project. Theres no way I can do additional editing.
The only project that opens normally is one which was never completed, never exported as a Quicktime movie. Help!
    Leesa

Probably, by mistake, you are opening the exported .mov (even if the extension is not visible) in place of the FCE project. When you double click a .mov created by exporting a sequence from FCE, the .mov opens in FCE by default, but it does not have any timeline nor canvas.
If you want to continue editing you must retrieve the FCE Project file (.fcp extension if FCE 3.5) ed open that one.

  • Archiving a FCE project

I know that in iMovie I can easily archive Events by going into iMovie, finding the external drive and dragging events from the internal hardd rive folder into the external drive folder. Is there an equivalent in FCE?
I have about 35GB of elements (video clips, music, etc.) that FCE knows where to find on my internal hard drive. I'd like to store these on an external drive. How can I move them to the external drive so that FCE knows where they are? Or do I just move them off, and then if I ever need to use them again, move them back onto the internal drive?
Thanks in advance for whatever advice you can offer.

    Hello Roger,
To archive an FCE project you need to keep the _FCE project file_ and any _source media_ that you used (video clips, stills, audio files, etc).
    Normally,
FCE project files are in the +Final Cut Express Documents+ folder
Video clips are in the +Final Cut Express Documents/Capture Scratch+ folder
Other media (stills, audio) will be where ever you saved them on your hard drive.
For project archiving, I usually copy all these files to a single folder having a logical name that identifies the project.

  • Is there a way to copy & past an entire FCE project to external dr

Is there a way to copy & paste an entire FCE project to an external drive so that I can delete the project on my hard drive and begin another project?

You need to keep the following:
Your *FCE project file* (normally located in your Final Cut Express Documents folder)
Your *captured clips* (normally located in your Final Cut Express Documents / Capture Scratch folder)
Any other *source media files* - photos, sound files, etc. - that you used in your project.
You can copy the files to any folder you wish to copy them to.
There is no need to keep any of the render files. You can always rerender your project as long as you have your FCE project file and the source clips & other source media that you used in the project.

    Hey
I have now tried for hours, but now I give up!
    MY WISH -
Create a Table of Contents (TOC) automatically after I have combined several pdf.files into a single pdf.file.
I have already bookmarks, shown on the screen (see screenshot below) but I want those bookmark to be visualised in a separate TOC in the top of the combined files.
This new TOC (which I have inserted) shall be printable and serve as a cover page in a binder.
I have seen other cheap pdf.programs in the market (e.g. PDF Converter Professional 7.3) which are able to make the above things, easy, fast and nice.
