Combining HD and DV Footage

I have footage shot with a HD Camera and footage from another cameara that only supports DV. Is there any reason why these cannot both be captured and saved in the same project, and then the appropraite Clips put in the desired sequence? I recall reading that these should not be mixed, albiet I am not certain about that.
Thanks,
Lyman

I've just completed a small project that used some really old digital 8 footage and footage from my Everio HD7, and it worked fine. If you export in standard def, the footage seems to match up pretty well.

  • Combining mpg and avi footage

    Hi,
I am trying to pull together video footage taken at my brother-in-laws wedding.  The tape footage is .avi which is supported by premier pro but the footage taken on a Sony HDD digital camera is saved as .mpg and comes up as an unsupported format, it is also not recognised as a recording device in a capture screen.  I have spent the afternoon trying converters to get it into avi but it then plays in slow motion or is a still because I am using trail versions.  Have you any ideas?? I need to work it out quickly as once I go home in 5 days I will have no time to look at it.  I am already planning an all nighter!!
I do want to combine the two different videos so it plays as one.
    Thank you Sarah

    Sarah,
You will not be able to Capture from the HDD camera in PrPro. As Harm mentions, if you have the trial, you cannot do anything regarding MPEG.
You will need to copy over the .MPEG (not sure if it writes this as a .VOB, or a straight MPEG file, to your computer, and then convert that/those file(s) to DV-AVI Type II, and then Import that/those file(s), into PrPro. I use DigitalMedia Converter, but there are free conversion programs that do it too, like Prism. Then, you will edit, and Export as DV-AVI to be used by an authoring program. With the trial, you will not have Encore, Adobe's excellent authoring app. Still, there are many others, that work, though not nearly so well. I think that Roxio, Nero and CyberLink have some authoring capabilities in certain of their programs. I do not use anything but Encore, so do not know how well, or poorly, these other programs function.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
PS - if the other camera records to miniDVD, or uses the .VOB container, this ARTICLE will give you some background on that "format."

  • Combining XDCAM and AVCHD footage

    Hi all,
Has anyone successfully merged AVCHD footage into an XDCAM project? If so, what presets have they used? I've run 720 25p in XDCAM (EX1) (PAL) and when I import the AVCHD it is very jittery

  • Best "Capture" workflow for projects mixing HDV tape and XDCAM footage

I'm trying to determine the best workflow for projects that combine XDCAM and HDV footage.
I'd obviously do the editing in a project designed for XDCAM, as that's the higher quality footage,
and render the HDV clips in the XDCAM timeline...ending up with an XDCAM end product.
I'd use SONY'S XDCAM TRANSFER to get the clips into FCP.
My question concerns capturing the HDV footage in this scenario. I've never been able to get
the Log and Capture feature for HDV footage to work, unless I've created an HDV project and am capturing into that HDV project.
So, generally, I create an HDV project, open the log and capture utility which is now set to capture HDV, and then capture the footage. I then close that project and create a new project, designed for XDCAM footage. I use XDCAM Transfer to get the XDCAM footage into the project, and I import
the previously captured HDV footage into that browser and start editing, rendering the HDV in the XDCAM timeline.
My question...do I really have to open, what is essentially a "fake" HDV project just to capture that HDV footage? You don't seem to have the option of capturing HDV footage (out of a camera or HDV tape deck) directly into an XDCAM project. If I try to change the capture or audio video settings of the XDCAM project to HDV, you get messages saying you can't do it.
Is there something I'm missing or a more streamlined way of doing this?
Thanks in advance for any input.

No need to jump through these hoops. Just set yourself up with a universal Easy Setup that will handle both. Choose your regular XDCAM HD Easy Setup then open the Audio / Video Settings window and change the Capture Preset to "HDV" and the Device Control Preset to "HDV Firewire" ... then click the "Create Easy Setup" button and save it for recall whenever needed.
Regarding the overall workflow, I'd seriously question the idea of creating XDCAM HD masters. No real benefit to that unless you need to export to XDCAM HD. Much better would be export your final master as Apple ProRes 422.

  • Editing SD and HD footage together in one project in FCE

I have both SD and HD footage that I have imported (in addition to still shots) into a project, which is now ready to edit in FCE.  This is my wedding video and I would love to avoid as many problems as possible before I get too far down the road in editing.  Is there anything I should know about combining the SD and HD footage in FCE?  Are there certain settings that I should check before editing?  I am concerned about aspect ratios and how that might ultimately skew the picture when burned to a DVD.  Any basic guidelines that you could provide would be very helpful.  Thanks!

This is great information, thank you.  After reading the responses, (and doing some additional research) I think I'll try create a shortened version of the video using only the HD footage and share via youtube and/or vimeo.  I would also like to produce a longer video (under 1 hour) that includes both my DV and HD footage and burn that DVD for a few people.  Given that I will be burning this to DVD, it seems that I should downsize the HD footage before editing to have it all at the DV level for one sequence in my FCE project.  I have two questions for creating this longer video with the output to DVD:
    1) How to downsize the HD footage: there seems to be several suggestions for this process, so I was wondering which is the most effective (and least time consuming).  Please note that I have already loaded all the clips (DV and HD clips) and still photos into a new project, which took some time.  I hope to be able to leverage that effort in some way (so I don't have to start from scratch again).
         a) Convert the HD footage using Streamclip before bringing it into the project
         b) Select the HD clips and export using Quicktime Conversion, select the DV codec, and resize for DV aspect ratio pixels (either 720 x 365 to match 4:3 DV aspect ratio, or 720 x 405 to match the 16:9 DV aspect ratio)
         c) Put all the HD clips in the project and do a batch export to DV
         d) Create a DV sequence in FCE and drag all HD clips to the timeline, which will automatically downsize them and will then require rendering
         e) Create a DV sequence in FCE and drag all HD clips to the timeline, then highlight all the HD clips, go to Modify > Fit to Sequence, which should resize it to match the sequence settings
         f) Resize the HD footage using a 3rd party app called Compressor before bringing it into the project
    2) Do I still need to crop the footage even after downsizing the HD footage?  I assume that "crop" means that the image will stil be too big for the DV level editing, so part of the image will not fit, so I will need to scale it (or something like that).  Is that right?  It seems very labor intensive to do that for every clip, hopefully this is not the case.
    Thank you for your help!

  • Combining HD and SD Video

So, I know that when I download I get both the HD and SD version of the video, but I downloaded on one computer and I'm transferring it to a new computer, but when I move both files, they no longer appear in iTunes combined.  How do I fix that?

    Hi there,
To get the best quality, you should probably combine the SD and HD footage in a DV-PAL sequence in FCE. The 16:9 footage will show with letterboxing (horizontal black bars), but this can be removed by scaling the image up to fill the canvas if you are so inclined (note that this also sacrifices quality).
When you are done editing the footage, hit Option-R to render everything out and then go to +File > Export Quicktime Movie+ to create a lossless file of your original sequence that can be burned in iDVD to an SD DVD.
Edit: Noticed you said you were using all 16:9 footage. Is your SD footage anamorphic? If that's the case you should combine the footage in a DV-PAL Anamorphic sequence instead.

  • Combining HD and SD, downconvert HD and output to DVD

I would like to mix AVCHD and SD (MiniDV) footage (all PAL 16:9) from two or more camcorders on the same timeline with the sole objective of creating DVDs.
For the AVCHD footage I'm videoing at the highest settings as I might want to re-edit this footage by itself at some stage in the future.
To get the best overall quality for the COMBINED footage I believe that for now I have to 'downconvert' the HD footage?
If so, would it be best to Import the AVCHD into FCE, Export (using Quicktime Conversion) as a Quicktime Movie? If so what, please, would be the recommended Options? In particular, under Video, would that be 'Apple Intermediate Codec' or maybe 'DV - PAL' or ...? Compressor Quality at 'Best' or ...?
For Size, should it be 'Compressor native' or maybe 'PAL 720 x 576 16:9' or ...?
Or maybe there's another, better way of 'downconverting'? Quicktime Pro..?
PS. I don't mind if it runs all night or how much disk space it takes.

  • Using 24p footage and 60i footage together?

    Hello,
I am working on a project that will combine 24p footage and 60i footage. What would be the best way to go about combining these two. It's for a short that is shot similar to Cloverfield. I want to use 60i footage for the hand held footage shoot by the actors who are capturing their experience. I'd prefer to have that footage shot on 24p as well and degrade the quality in post, but I don't want to run the risk of them dropping my DVX100a and destroying it. I don't have any experience with 60i, or combining two kinds of footage, so advice is much appreciated!
    Thanks!

    > that they are not true 30p but really 60i rendered to 30p
Well, I certainly can't speak for all of these cameras, but I have played around with some of this "30p over 60i" footage -- but most of this was from HDV cameras, not AVCHD. Avoid if you can. Basically, the luma is progressive and the chroma is interlaced.
I have a function (it's actually part of the dv2film and hd2sd functions) that will deinterlace only the chroma, so can recover greatly true progressive output... but this is an unmitigated a pain in the *** to deal with all the time, and you certainly lose at least a little chroma resolution. Avoid :)

  • How does one combine PAL and NTSC sequences to get a final exported QT movie?

I want to combine PAL footage and NTSC footage, shot on different cameras.
I found that I can create a PAL sequence by dragging a PAL clip to the "new sequence" icon.
BUt then, if I make two sequences, one in NTSC format, and the other in PAL format, can the¥ be exported as a single QT movie, ? or m2v ? or Mp4?

One generally doesn't.  One shoots PAL for PAL delivery and ATSC for ATSC delivery, never the two shall meet

  • What is the best way to import and export footage from the 5D Mark II?

    Hello,
I've just finished shooting what I am considering to be my directorial masterpiece.  Shot it on the Canon 5D (1080p, 24fps), and the footage looks amazing.  Now I am ready to start editing and have been using premiere lately, but I have yet to figure out the proper pipeline.  I want to know the best way to retain resolution before I delve into this project.
    My questions:
    1)  What is the best way to start a new project and import the footage without having to render whilst editing, so as to retain all resolution and originality of the source footage?
    2)  What is the best way/ codec/ format to export this same footage once editing is complete so as to retain that crisp 1080p for which the 5D is so recognized?
    3)  What is the best way/ codec/ format to import and export/ render between premiere and after effects?  I am speaking mostly of vfx and color correction.  I also have some 30fps footage that I intend to slow down in AE and then import into premiere.
I know this is pretty broad, but as a solo filmmaker I really need someone's guidance.  I rarely ever finish my films with the same, crisp look as the footage.  I need pipeline help, and really appreciate it!

    1. Follow the advice above. Also use the Media Browser to import the footage in case you have spanned media files. Import files with the Media Browser.
    2. It largely depends on what you wish to ouput to: Blu-ray, web, etc. This FAQ gives the best answer: What are the best export settings?

  • A single report can't combine portrait and landscape oriented pages

    Hi,
Can a single report in Crystal report XI (version 11.5.8.826) combine portriat and landscape oriented pages like Crystal report 2008?   For example, I have one main report with several subreports in the main report.  I want one subreport be in portrait page orientation and the other subreports in landscape.  Can I do something like that in Crystal report XI version?    I even tried writing a small .net program to do this, but it doesn't seem to allow me to do that programmatically either.  Please help

I'd like to elevate this issue with Crystal Reports XI. There is a critical application which we developed in-house which needs both portrait and landscape orientation in each of the 30,000 plus documents we are sending out every month. If developers in Business Objects are picking this thread up - we need a patch for this limitation - quick. Right now, we are toying with the possibility of exporting the documents into a text format with markers indicating if a page is portrait or landscape. This is to be loaded into a Xerox machine (which costs hundreds of thousands of dollars), where it is mapped automatically to portrait or landscape. Note to Business Objects: This will provide us and countless others with much value. Think 80/20 rule - most bang for your development bucks and value for your customers!

I really think 'buying' is the best solution on this one.  Ideally, you would have at least five internal hard drives.
    System

    Cache/Scratch

Use externals and network drive only for backup.
