Combining iChat buddy lists

Is there a way I can have one buddy list opened for both AIM and Jabber (Google Chat)? I would prefer one, as opposed to cluttering my desktop with two separate buddy lists. I do use the Spaces program to clear clutter, but for some reason it just bothers me that their are two separate buddy lists.
Thanks!

  • Ichat buddy list will not open.

I have a brand new macbook and have used ichat successfully. Today my buddy list will not load when i open the application. to the best of my knowledge, my buddylist is not set to hide or anything. I restarted my computer, and turned it off, but the problem continues.
So the application appears to be open on my top menu bar... but not buddy list? help?

    You need this FAQ http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1486891
For this you needs at least your Install Disk and a download of the Combo Version of the last OS Level Update you did.
You may need Pacifist but the FAQ has a Link.

  • How to get the iChat Buddy List to automatically appear on the Desktop

On my friends computer iChat is set to launch whenever he logs into his account, but the Buddy List does not appear on his Desktop. So when I see him online there is no green video camera mark next to his name.
If I want to do a screen share with him, I have to ask him to go to the iChat icon towards the right side of the Menubar (the round 'speech ballon') and click on Show AIM Buddy List at the bottom. Once he has the Buddy List on his Desktop, I can screen share with him.
Surely there must be a way for the Buddy List to always appear on the Desktop when logging into his computer... Can anyone help out?

    Hi,
    Interesting one.
If I were telling you how to create this it would be like this:-
    1) Go to System Preferences > Accounts > Your account and enter iChat in the Login items. (Makes iChat launch at Computer Start Up)
    2) to Hide the Window (Buddy List(s) ) at Start Up click the Red Button to close the Window/Buddy List before Quitting.
This will cause the next Start Up to not show th Buddy List.
How you make the Buddy List appear after that depends on how you bring it in to View.
    NOTES:
Some Windows in iChat from Buddy List to the Preferences to th Actual Chat Windows will appear in the places you left them for the most part.
    The Exceptions are Incoming Invites.
This means the Buddy List will be were you left it, your Outgoing Invite/Preview whilst waiting for Connection will always be where the last outgoing Video Chat window was.
Using the Red Button on a Open Chat Window will end the Chat (All types).
However doing it to a Buddy List only Hides it.
In addition to this using the Item (or the Keystrokes) from the Window Menu of iChat for a Buddy list when it is On view will Hide it (or Bring it back if Hidden)
The Show AIM option in the Menu Bar icon's drop down is a two edge thing as it shows All Buddies (Available ones) from all AIM Buddy lists if you have more than one (Apple names are also AIM Names in this case).
Does he want to change this Behaviour ?
He would be better off using the iChat Window menu (or Keystrokes) after he has clicked the icon in the Dock to bring the app to the Front so he can access the Menu bar with ichat in it.
He could also click and Hold the icon for iChat in the DOCK and select the Account Name there. This, if I remember correctly, will have the same effect as presenting the Buddy List from the Menu Bar icon (it will be hidden at Next Start Up)

  • Unable to log onto ichat buddy list

so...everytime i try to put that i'm "available" instead of "offline" on the buddy list window, a window pops up and says "Lost connection with AIM: The connection to the host was unexpectedly lost". i tried doing what was suggested in another post but had no such luck! if someone could help me out that would be SPLENDID. =)

    Hi cmr,
    Welcome to the  Discussions
I take it you mean from Away to Available ?
If so then you are already On-line and the problem is with the various AIM servers that keep record of who is Away and who is Available.
If you mean that your are Offline but with iChat Open and want to go on-line and the problem occurs then it could be your end.
    Two things
    1) Go to iChat > preferences > Accounts > Server Settings tab
    Change the port to 443
    2) delete com.apple.icaht.AIM.plist from Users/(your account)/Library/Preferences
    AND restart iChat.

  • Ichat weirdness.  my buddy list no longer 'shuffles' statuses

    hi all,
My ichat buddy list is a bit odd the lst few days, it used to shuffle the online buddies so that all the online people were at the top, then idle beneath then away then everyone else in alphabetical order underneath all of the above. Now it just doesnt. Everyone stays in their respective - non alphabetical - order and shows their respective status icon (i use shapes) but no-one ever moves anymore. I think this may be indicative of a deeper issue, my ibook is running real slow lately (have posted elsewhere)
    Any thoughts?
    Best apple community type regards,
    Ben

    Hi Suzan,
My use of a capital letter for options may have been confusing,
Pic to show what I mean.
The Buddy list has to be the front window.

  • Merge buddy lists to one

Is there a way to combine the buddy list windows, i.e., like in Adium?

    No.
Use http://www.apple.com/feedback/ichat.html for Wish List stuff.
You will have to State you are on iChat 4 as the version list has not been updated.

  • How do I put my buddy list on a different screen-name?

    Hello,
I have a screen-name on iChat, and then decided to get another one. Is there an easy way to get my first buddy list onto my second buddy list?
    Thank you.

    Hi Dice333chill,
    There are two main ways.
    1) With the AIM applictaion there is a facility for saviing the Buddy list to your comuter and then chaing the Account and importing th e list.
    2) The Second way is make sure your Buddies are identified in the Address Book as Buddies in some way and then dragging them back to the new ichat Buddy List.
There is one problem with the scond method and that is some Buddies with just accounts names in the Buddy list do not show up in the Address Book until more info is added to their Address Card in iChat. These Buddies will need you to do a Get Info on them (Click once on the Buddy and then use the Apple Key and i Together and select Address Card from the drop down in the window that appears). You will need to Add eitehr Real names or some other unique identifier to show up in the address Book.
The problem with the first method may be the need to download AIM
The actual iten you need is in the File menu as Export.
So the real answer is no.

  • Changing the buddy list color

Is there a way to change the background of your ichat buddy list to a different color? like go into the .tiff files and modify a color?
also when are tabs going to be available

Without knowing how to use interface builder, it's not possible. Even then, it's probably not possible.
The file that the iChat buddy list background uses is MainMenu.nib, which is located in iChat.app/Contents/Resources/English.lproj, if you want to play around with it.
If you decide to do so, backup the file before messing with it or else you'll take the risk of drastically screwing up iChat and will have to reinstall.

  • How do I import my old buddy list to my new screenname?

Hello everyone. I use my AIM account with iChat to chat with my buddies. I recently created a new AIM account, and would like to transfer my old buddy list to my new screenname. Does anyone know how to do this?
    Thanks,
    Vikram

iChat doesn't support a way of importing or exporting buddies. If the screen names were saved in Address Book, you can click the "+" at the bottom of the iChat buddy list window and import the entries.
That's currently the only way to do it.
    Hope this clarifies things,
    -Ryan

  • 10.4.6 Update killed my Buddy List. Why?

I just installed the 10.4.6 updater, and my iChat Buddy List has disappeared. When I start iChat, the list appears, but it's blank. I tried adding buddies from my saved chats, but the list remains blank. Has anyone else had this problem? Does anyone have any ideas for solving the problem?

Did you repair permissions after updating?
You might try iChat with another User account.
You also might try downloading and installing again using the 10.4.6 Combo.

    Hi,
To be clear, the Screen Names are kept on the AIM server.
The links to The Address Book that makes marybuddylike into Aunt Mary id done by the iChat App consulting with the Address Book and then Displaying the name that way.
You can log in with your Screen Name with any AIM based Client (App) on any computer and see the Buddy List in it's basic form.

  • Contacts Pictures being overwritten in Sync with iChat Buddy iCons

This is really a problem in 2 parts. Firstly iChat AV is taking over the Address Book Picture. I can set the picture in the Phone, and that contact is someone that is in my iChat Buddy List. I can also set the picture in Address Book. But when the person goes online with his custom buddy icon, that takes over the Address Book icon I'd set. This eventually gets sync'd to the iPhone and then overwriting the lovely picture for my contact and replacing it with a lo res buddy icon. Lame. This is true even if I set the Buddy icon and tell iChat to always use that icon. The Custom Buddy icon seems to always eat the nicer pictures that I place in for the Buddy/Contact in my Address Book.
This seems to be more prevalent on Tiger than on Leopard, but I spend most of my time online in Tiger and its also the machine I sync the iPhone to.

Fortunately, I've discovered the problem was not iChat but Adium. Adium was overwriting my AddressBook Buddy icon. For those of you who run into this as well, you can turn off the setting in the Advanced tab of Adium, under the Address Book sub-tab. There's an images section of that screen. Uncheck "Overwrite Address Book images..."

  • Aim buddy but not ichat buddy

I have added my sister to my buddy list on aim but she does not appear in my ichat buddy list so I can't videocall her. Does anyone know what I can do about this? It's very confusing!

    Hi,
    Welcome to the    Discussions
DO you use the same Screen Name for your self in both applications ?
If you do not your sister could have only one of your Screen Names in here Buddy list and have allow Buddy List Only set and you will not see her if you don't Display Off-Line Buddies.

  • Ichat auto accept for file transfer?  way to combine buddy lists?

    1) on the new leopard ichat, is there an auto-accept mode for file transfers so that anyone on my buddy list can automatically send me files?
    2) i have a google chat and aim accounts running. they run on separate buddy lists. is there a way to combine them to only have one buddy list window?

You can actually. Go to iChat > Preferences > Alerts, select "Incoming File Transfers" from the pull-down menu, check "Run AppleScript", select "Auto Accept.applescript". Your file transfers will be accepted by default
