Combining iMovie projects??

Any idea how I can combine three iMovie-HD projects into one? I tried big time copying/pasting of sound and image. What I ended up with looked okay until I tired to run it. Apparently corrupted because I could not always see the image. But the sound was okay.
Can I do it through iDVD?
Thanking your replies.

Hi V
Not sure what You want.
a. merge three project into one ?
b. put three movies on one DVD disc ?
a. iMovie 5 can export material to a new project
b. Just close iMovie and open iDVD - select a theme. Now take the icon
of movie 1 and drop it into the theme window. Repeart for the two other
movies.

  • Combining iMovie projects into a longer iMovie project

I have built a bunch of iMovie '08 projects and would like to combine some of them into a larger new iMovie project. I know how to drag movie events and photos to the new project, but do not see how to drag projects to the new project.
I already tried building the new project in iDVD without good results so it was suggested that I build it in iMovie. Can anyone help me out?
    Thanks

There does not appear to be a way of merging projects together without a lot of manual work involved.
I have tried all the options that I would have expected to work (as I suspect you have), but as you say you only appear to be able to move the video from one project to another in one copy/paste. Then you need to do the other items separately (audio etc).
Perhaps a suggestion here for the next release:

  • Combining iMovie projects in iDVD

I have a several part video that I would like to burn to a DVD that will play all the way through as a movie. I have put them in a submenu but it still only will play one and then go back to the menu. Is it possible to add a button that will "play all" on the main menu? Or another option?

    Hi starfishy2000
    Welcome to Apple discussions.
I have a several part video that I would like to burn to a DVD that will play all the way through as a movie.
It is 100% true what is posted above. However, try this:
Export each movie to QT within iMovie (one at a time) if you'd like and the add each separate QT file /movie (one at a time and in the order you wish) to iDvd's slideshow feature. iDvd's slideshow will play all QT files without returning to the menu until all movies / photos have been played. Yes, you can also add movies to iDvd's slideshow as well as images.
I recommend you not select "manual" within iDvd's slideshow unless your intention is to pause after each added movie or slide.

  • Lo-o-o-ng project in 3 iMovie projects.  How to combine?

I'm editing a long trip I took, and have it in 3 different iMovie projects, 1 an hour and 22 min., 1 an hour 15 min., and 1 less than hour. Any way to combine these into one iMovie without having to learn FCP?
As it is now, any audio added to these corrupts. HELP!!--Porter

Do you want to put the movies together and edit them down to less than 2hrs so you can make a DVD?
You can either edit each one separately and put 3 movies on one DVD, just be sure that the total time of all of them is less than 2hrs.
Or, you can open up movie 2, copy the movie, close movie2, open movie 1 and paste the clips into it. Then save and close movie 1. Open movie 3, copy and close, then open movie 1 and paste those clips. Now you have all 3 movies in one iMovie, and you can edit it. However, you may notice that the playback in iMovie is now jerky and stuttering. The final DVD should be ok, if you can edit in this manner.
Or, you can finish editing each movie individually, then export them back to camcorder DV tape, reimport into a new iMovie project so that all 3 are on the same movie.
Or, you can save each movie as a QuickTime Full-Quality movie, and open a new iMovie project and drag the QT movies into it. You cannot edit these in the same way as the original iMovies. The QT movies are new movies with the sound/video you put in when editing them the first time. This method will give you a very smooth playback. It will require more free space as you are basically making a copy of each movie. However, once you have created the QT movie, you do not need to save the original iMovie, and can delete it to free up hard drive space.
Then, you can use the QT movies to make your DVDs, either separately,or as one long movie.
One thing to remember: if you made chapter markers in your original iMovie, they will not show up in the QT version, so you will have to create them again.
    Hope this is helpful!

  • Combine two iMovie projects into one iDVD project?

Could someone help me figure out the best way to combine two iMovie (HD 5) projects into one iDVD project? I currently have a documentary with one iMovie project at 1 hour exactly. I am starting a second one and would like all this to go on one DVD eventually. I am especially concerned about what happens with the chapter markers already created in each iMovie project - how is that combined when the two are put together? If there is a link for this info, I'd be happy to read that as well.
    Thank you!

I would combine them by saving each completed imovie (without chapter markers) as a full quality QuickTime movie.
Then start a completely new imovie project and import each of those in to make make one large imovie. (But remember, your DVD will only hold about 120 minutes of footage and that doesn't count the themes).
That's when I would add the chapter markers.
BTW-it's going to take up a lot of disk space to save the movie s and to burn the DVD.

  • Pls advise current info as to combining 3 iMovie projects into one iMovie. Thanks!

Pls advise current info as to combining 3 imovie projects into one imovie.  I will finish with idvd.
I am in a rush today to complete a video for my brother's memorial for tomorrow.  Thanks!

Thanks for your reply, Klaus. I'm just now getting to try your suggestion to copy and paste from timeline rather than drag and drop from clipviewer. Alas, it seems to be choking terribly on the transfer. This video is not a 60 minute movie, either; it's about ten minutes. I has about 60 files to it. I did get to the point where I felt confident enough to empty the trash and save the project, so I assume the clips that are there are not still "attached" to the unedited dvs.
Earlier I tried to export, in the advanced settings, to the full quality dv, but the quality really dropped, way too much for the intended use. I'm pretty much stumped at this point, unless I can hear some other suggestions.
What I might try doing is simply dragging and dropping all the packet contents of the media folder into the other movie's media folder, but then I suspect I'll have to rebuild the darn thing from bits and pieces and it may be like putting Humpty Dumpty back together again...ugh.
I'm sure I'm not the first person to face this challenge, am I? Of course, my lesson learned is to build one dvd's contents in one imovie project. If it weren't for the fact that I need to offer viewers the option to "play movie" (play all the videos as one movie) I'd simply drag each movie into iDVD and do it that way (the dvd showing each video separately).
Would still love to hear of other possible solutions here, before trying some other forum.
    thanks!

  • Combining two projects in iMovie.

    Hi
Can any-one tell me if it's possible to combine two projects into one in imovie? I'd like to slot a project between still photos in an existing project.
    ta

    Hi
Yes this has no stream-line function - but
    • Make the insert as it's own project
    • Export out as a full Quality QuickTime movie
    • Import this into Events
    • Now insert this as "Cut-away" in the Main Project
Many complex scenes must be made this way by export/import as many functions etc only can be applied one at a time.

  • Combining several iMovie projects into one, time-not space-being the factor

    Hello,
Space is not an issue (large external drive), but I'm trying to figure out the fastest way to combine several iMovie projects into one (so each movie will become a chapter in iDVD). I'm pretty sure there must be a better way than I'm attempting, selecting all the clips in clipviewer, then dragging and dropping to the new project clipviewer. As I've done this, the "time remaining" window keeps growing (started out about 4 minutes, climbed to "92 minutes remaining," then I aborted the move). Details: each movie is about 8-10 minutes long, widescreen, made up of various (sometimes many) dv clips, audio segments, still photos, etc.
I have added dv clips to a project via the media folder (project unopened), but this was a single item and simple to move from trash into the project. In this case, I'm not sure what to move in order to save the entire project intact.
Thanks so much for any help,

  • Can I copy iPhotos from an existing iMovie Project to a new one?

Hi---I have iPhotos in an existing iMovie project (currently iMovie 11 version). For some reason, I cant seem to find them in my iPhoto library. But I want to use those photos in a new iMovie 11 project. I can highlight the photos and it allows me to click "Copy", but when I go to my new project to hit paste, they just don't show up. What am I doing wrong? Thanks in advance for any help you can give me. I really want to use these photos in my new project, but can't seem to figure out how to use them again. Thanks, Todd

    Hi Todd,
It appears that your photos have been converted to video - hence the DV file extension. There are 3 things I can think of that may help.
Firstly, play the movie project full screen. Use the slider to locate the first image you want. While paused in that position, use the key combination Command>Shift>4 - a cross hair cursor will appear. Click and drag this diagonally across the image - as you release the mouse button (or track pad) the image will be saved to your Desktop.
The second option (and probably better) is to use MPEG Streamclip to extract stills from the video. It's available as a free download from the developer here:
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
Drag the the first video clip containing the still you want onto MPEG Streamclip's interface. Navigate to the exact frame, then from the menu select File>Export Frame - you can choose between JPEG, TIFF and PNG.
Another option is to duplicate the iMovie project then delete everything but the images you want from the duplicate. Rename the duplicate and use that as your starting point for your new project. To duplicate, while in Project Library view (not Edit view), click on the project then select File>Duplicate Project from the menu.

  • How do I combine multiple projects into one project

I have about 35 movie projects made in iMovie 11 that I want to combine into about 8 movie projects.  What's the best way to do this?

If you want those Media Browser versions they are 'squirreled away' or 'hidden' should I say in the the .rcproject file I think. That project file is in the following location:
Mac HD > Users > (your home folder) > Movies > iMovie Projects > <CTRL> + click on the project name then choose Show Package Contents. This will reveal the folders in thercproject container. The movies will be in the movies folder.

  • Imovie project when burned thru idvd looks horrible

I have worked for several months on making my first Imovie. It is about 1hr in length. It combines both narration, video, soundtrack and still images. When I previewed the project on imovie looked great. I can also export thru quicktime and it looks good, but not as good as it does in imovie. When I followed the directions on how to export to Idvd, I was unaware of how poorly the finished project looked in Idvd. I burned it and was let down as all my titles where pixelated and the still images are combing real bad. Also some of the images are jerky in the ken burns effect. I find this frustrating as I can save it as a quicktime file and it looks pretty good (but not as good as in imovie). It appears to me that everything I have tried as far as importing to idvd looks horrible when Idvd gets done with it. In fact even the Idvd menu I made looks pixelated and horrible. I am making this dvd to sell to others and to present at talks I am giving. The quality is so poor I am thinking about bagging the whole project. I noticed on the forums regarding both idvd and imovie many of the questions about the quality degredation in idvd dont get answered. Or when they do get answered, the answer is to purchase final cut or more software in general. What I want to know is can I make my excellent looking imovie look acceptable in idvd? If not, why? Why would mac make a option to make a movie project look good in imovie, but the only way to export it is to make it look horrible? Also, is there a way to make a dvd in idvd that looks as good as my Imovie project (without dropping 1,000$ for more software which I am not going to do as now I don't trust it until I see it first)? What am I missing here?

    Hi Adam,
Just some general comments about exporting from iMovie '09. From posts on the forum, and from my own experience, it's best not to use Apple's preset export option "Share to iDVD". You may not have used this, but it produces an AIC (Apple Intermediate Codec) movie that doesn't look good when burned through iDVD, for some reason. Odd, considering that iMovie edits in this format. _The option "Share to Media Browser" gives much better results._
You don't mention what format your source footage is (to the best of my recollection). This may have a bearing on the final result (burned DVD). Is it DV or AVCHD or some other format? iMovie '09 has a reputation for producing less than stellar results with DV footage, due to the way it handles interlaced material. AVCHD footage turns out quite well on DVD after editing in iMovie.
If you have not already tried this, export using "Share to Media Browser". In iDVD, from the Media tab, drag your movie into the background area of the iDVD theme, then proceed to set up the DVD as usual. When sharing to the Media Browser, you have a range of sizes to select from. Try Large (960x540) and also HD (1280x720). I've used both but see little difference, if any, in the final DVD. But I do get quite good results with both. The picture is softer and less saturated when compared with the original AVCHD footage viewed via the camcorder on an HD TV. This is to be expected, given one is HD and the other SD, of course. But it shouldn't be as bad as you are describing.
There are many posts about DVD quality on the forum. As you would be aware, some offer very good advice. Try different methods using a short test project to see what gives the best results for you. Look out for an e-book by Steve Mullen - not free, but some good tips there.
Hope this helps in some way. Quality issues can be frustrating!

  • Best way to export iMovie project for editing

I am creating an iMovie project in iMovie 09 with a friend. I have part of the movie and he has the other part (basically I have put together a lot of the video and some transitions, and he is going to put in some music he created and add a couple of other cool things). I have created my part of the movie and I would like to send the project to him so that he can add his part to finish the movie. I am not sure what the best method is to save my iMovie project so that I can sent it to him. I don't want to export it to something he can't work with on his end.
I am thinking that if I save the project as a QuickTime movie it will allow him to open open the file in iMovie and then he can add his stuff. I was also thinking about ways of exporting to mp4 format as I know this is a format that iMovie likes, and he could open this up in iMovie. I wasn't sure, though, how to make sure I save the movie project as a mp4.
Do you all have any thoughts or suggestions on this?
    Thanks,
    Tim

I don't think I have the answer, but if you don't mind I'm going to drop into your discussion because I have a similar issue and am interested in any solution someone may give you. I have a couple of iMovie project files because, like you, I have two people working seperately, and I just want to combine them as a single project.
I was able to move both projects to one computer by moving the iMovie projects to an external hard drive and then opening them both up from the same computer. That solution probably doesn't solve your issue, though.

  • Retrieving Older Versions of iMovie Project

Can anyone offer some guidance on how I can retrieve an older version of an imovie project between imovie 9 and 10?
I started a project in iMovie 9 a few weeks ago. I recently uppgraded to iMovie 10 before completing the project. I made some amendments yesterday, which involved deleting a series of clips and effects. However, coming back a few hours later I realised I wanted those clips back, but the amendments had 'autosaved' and I couldn't retrieve them.
I have ried using Time Machine to retrieve the old version of the iMovie project, but for some reason the whole audio (music and vocal) are now combined in one audio track, which was never the case before. This means I cannot edit them separately which is a bit of a killer.
It is my first time using Time Machine and I tried both copy and paste of the old '.rcproject' file onto my current desktop, and I also tried 'restore'. However, the old project file will only open in iMovie 9 (as opposed to 10) and neither method has brought the project back in it's original form.
Any assistance on getting back old versions in tact would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your reply Matt. Following your post, I tried that and the majority of the movie was intact, including the music audio and any clip audio.
However, any audio clips which have been 'detached' from the video clips are now silent - this is even though I can see the waveforms, volume is up, ducking is off any other clips etc. However, strangely (to me at least) the detached audio clips do play as normal when I open them up in clip trimmer, just not in normal playback. Any idea on how I can get these detached clips playing back normally again?
Also, this is now a bit irrelevant to the initial issue, as I realised that the changes I made must have been just after I converted to IMovie 10. Therefore I now need to get a slighlty more recent iMovie 10 version of the same project. I tried to retrieve a project version from 2 days ago (well after I'd upgraded to IMovie 10) using Time Machine, but it only opens in iMovie 9 and seem to still be an old version, and not the the one I'm after.

  • Merging multiple iMovie projects

Is it possible to merge multiple imovie projects into one? Or is it possible to merge them into one continuous playing movie in iDVD?

    Hi:
It's a little tedious but the brute force way is to open the first project and save it under a new name. Then open the second. Then literally copy the timeline from the second to the first. Repeat for the third project and so on. It takes some time as the copying process duplicates all the content into the new combined project. This obviously will take a lot of disk storage space! Maybe someone else knows if there is a way to do this working directly with the project files..
Another alternative is to use Roxio's Toast to burn a DVD by simply adding each of the projects individually into Toast. What you lose here is the ability to have the themes and so forth from iDVD but you will get the projects on a single DVD, and they will play in the order.
I am sure someone else has some better ideas about this. I would be interested too as I am in a process of making several small iMovies and want to combine them into several variations.

  • Opening Old iMovie Projects

I have many, many old iMovie projects that I would like to open in iMovie HD. Is there any way to do this? The only thing I've been able to do is open a new iMovie HD and drag old media files to the clips pane.
    LaVonne

    Hi Stephen,
Your memory is probably better than mine but I would go as far to say that you can probably open them with iMovie HD 5 without much ado just not on your intel or any machine running 10.3.9 with QT 7 as things have changed considerably with that combination. If you have or have access to a computer running 10.3.9 or earlier with QT 6.5 or earlier you should be golden provided you didn't save anything while it was opened in 6..
It's not that I am saying timing is my only problem though either. But It appears to be the cause of why things aren't working correctly and that iM keeps trashing files as nothing is making sense to the timeline anymore and projects created before the 3.9 & 7 combo had no clue what a graphics card even was and now that is the only way they are being processed. Don't get me wrong I do like my Intel but the PPC was a different beast altogether as it was capable of doing things the Intel never could and never will as it doesn't need to and can do what it does best allowing your graphics card to do what it does best as well. They just aren't in sync causing issues in any areas and not just iMovie.
If you do not need to re-edit you may be able to open the timeline movie in iM6 instead of opening the project though I am not sure how this will work in the long run as it will only be a reference movie and require the original to work.
Hope this helps. Please let us know how if it works out for you.
    Thank You.
    Sweet Polly
