Combining libraries or moving projects between them...

Until the new Aperture, it was just easier to have different libraries, but I think some of those little ones can and should be combined into a 'new' Aperture Library that I can work with easily. For instance, one of my libraries is only 700mb . . what's the best way or safest way to move that library's contents [it's only one project] from Library A to a different library, and combine the two libraries in effect.
Should I just open Library A, select a project and export the project? I assume I'd want to export 100%, masters, versions and metadata or woudl that do it automatically? Thanks.

Projects are completely self contained.
So just open the library you're migrating from, select the project, and then from the file menu, select "export project". Then change libraries (you'll have to stop/restart Aperture), and select "import project", select it, and you're done. It's quite easy.
I do this all the time... I have separate Aperture libraries on my MacBook and my G5 Quad. I travel with the MacBook, and can do edits in the field. When I get back to the office, I just export the project from the MacBook, and import the exported project to my G5 over AFP. Works like a peach... all edits/changes/... are intact. And that includes the previews that I generated on the MacBook for a slide show that exhibited a bug related to previews

  • Intel Macs & G5s: Problems when moving projects between them

An earlier post* suggesting complete compatibility between the latest FCP in a G5 and in an Intel Mac may be in error.
We are experiencing continuing crashes using our Intel Mac when we work on projects that were originally either imported or partially rendered in the G5.
It has gotten to the point where we feel we must keep projects completely isolated from each other: Either it is a "G5 project" or it is an "Intel Mac" project. Moving projects back and forth between the two leads to problems such as:
The Intel Mac does not recognize any renders done in the G5...
The Intel Mac crashes when rendering 'G5' projects...
The Intel mac crashes when compressor goes to work to export sequences to mpeg...
The G5 works fine with Intel Mac-originated material: It is only in the Intel Mac where we have these problems.
Both systems are up-to-the minute on their OS, security updates, and FCP versions. We are using variously 720p/30 from the JVC GY-100UA and 1080i/30 from the Sony Z1U.
    Our questions are:
Is anyone else experiencing similar problems moving projects between a G5 and an Intel Mac?
Is anyone moving projects between the two platforms and experiencing NO problems at all? That information would be just as valuable, and very welcome.
Apple FCP development team: Is our experience unique or have you had other reports like this? Any idea what could be causing our problems -- and what we can do to fix them?

    Scott,
    Welcome to the discussions!
I have had no problems moving my G5 projects over to my MP.
You can not move render files between machines.
When you changed systems, did you use Migration Assistant to transfer your files over to your new Mac Pro? You might need to install from the disks in order to achieve native Intel performance. See if you installed Final Cut 5.1 on your G5 then it installed the PPC code... if you put that drive into your Mac Pro or used Migration Assistant to move the app over it is still the PPC code... When you install from the installation disk, Installer determines what system you are installing on (PPC or Intel) and that's what it installs. This goes for all of your "Universal Binary" apps...
In the System Profiler app. under Software/Applications
Final Cut Pro "kind" should be Universal on your MP.

  • Moving projects between external hard drives lose clips

Sorry for the unclear subject line, but I really can't think of a quippy way to say what the problem is.
Short version--I moved project from external hard drive A to external hard drive B. Worked on A. Worked on B. Moved it back to A (still have copy on B). No longer works on A. Clips show up in the timeline, but on screen is white. Transitions, titles, audio don't work. Still works on B.
    Ideas?
Long version--I'm using 10.3.9 on my old Powerbook. iMovie 6.0.3. I am using Lacie Porsche 250GB external and a Mercury Elite Pro 500 GB hard drives. When I started, the Lacie, which I was using for my speaking career videos, was NOT formatted for Mac OS Extended (Journaled). So, while working on another project, I had issues with the infamous Ken Burns bug with pictures.
After consulting with the experts here (thanks Karl), I determined that I must reformat. So, pain and anguish, I moved the various movies off of the Lacie (Drive A) to the Mercury (Drive B). On both, the movies worked fine--all transitions, everything. The Mercury was and is Mac OS Extended (but NOT Journaled).
So, I wipe the Lacie with Disk Utility so it is Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Once finished, I begin the process of moving projects (3 in total) back to the Lacie. Two of the projects are completed works with transitions, audio file, titles and the like. One is just clips in the clip pane, none in the timeline. I moved them all at once.
When I did, I checked them before I would delete them off the Mercury. When I did, both of the completed projects loaded properly--the clips do show in the timeline. But, in the preview window, all I have is a blank white screen. When I play, nothing happens.
I have not erased anything, changed anything, thrown anything away--nothing. And, they still work perfectly on the Mercury (same computer, obviously).
This one really has me stumped. I am really irked that iMovie has apparently become such a messed up program. Worse, this has been out for some time now (I had not used it yet, but I got iLife last year some time). I can't believe there are all these issues all this time later and obviously Apple has done nothing or little to correct these problems. I consider iMovie a real flagship program to model the ease of use and blah blah blah that we all know concerning Apple.
OK, sorry for venting---anyone with any ideas? Did I mess up the drive when I wiped it? Is this merely the program? Something between the fact that the Mercury is NOT Journalled? Any help will, as always, be appreciated.

    Thanks David---
The Permissions are the same for both, on both hard drives.
I have not repaired permissions on either.
I did shut down the computer last night and this AM, upon starting again, had the same problem.
I did attempt a few fixes--I moved the clips from the timeline back to the preview pane. I had one clip already there and it would play perfectly. When I did that, with a clip from the timeline and then moved it back, it would show up and play. But, upon hitting the next clip, it would stop playing at the first transition.
Some of the transitions are from a Third Party (Gee). Remember, though, they played perfectly fine from Drive B. I have not attempted, however, to put the Gee effects into iMovie 6. As I said earlier, I haven't used the program on my computer since the Fall. Now, using 6.0.3, I don't see my GeeThree effects anywhere, nor have I tried to put them in. But, from the Drive B (and originally in the drive A), the movie plays fine even though the added clips are not present for me to use in any new project.

  • Codec missing and moving projects between different computers

    Hi,
Im a real rookie when it comes to premiere... and i have 2 problems.
First off i just want to know the best way to move a project between two computers... Usually when i move the folder and try open it all the links to the different movie files dont work, so i have to go through and select each one manually. There must be a way to get around this...
Second off i have a problem with importing my mac mov (i used iMovie to move the files from the video camera, which is a Sony HDR-HC3) files into premiere on the pc, it claims the codecs are missing. I have installed quicktime on the pc and i can play the movies fine, but they wont import into premiere because of the missing codec. Why?

FAQ:How do I transfer a project from one computer to another?

  • Moving projects between laptop and PC

We have a server in the home where all the photo's are stored. My wife wants to be able to tag and manipulate the photo's on the server but also wants to be able to take her lap top outside of the home and show people whats she's working on.
What is the best way to do this to maintain a sync between laptop work and server work?
Does she need to move EVERYTHING off the server into her lap top then move it back when she is done working on it away from home? That seems time intensive and makes me nervous if she is rewriting over the contents on the server.
Or can she only move the current "project" however that is defined in elements to her computer and only that portion would be updated on the server when she got back home? My primary concern is that the server copy remains relatively error free and there are no mistakes that would wipe out years of photo's. Although the server has redundancy if the mistake wasnt noticed and the server ran it's backup routine I would not be able to roll back changes.
Perhaps getting her an external hard drive to carry around with a copy of all the pictures on it then having her just back up that hard drive to the server is a good answer but I don't know if there is an easier solution.
    Thanks for any help,
    Elements noob

    There is a simple solution:
It seems to me that when your wife is showing the photos on her notebook, the tags are completely irrelevant -- it's only the photos that matter.
She can keep a copy of the photos on her notebook and show or edit them there, then simply upload any changed photos to the server.
You can use Organizer's Edit...Update thumbnails to update the display in Organizer.

  • Moving project between Final Cut Express and Final Cut Pro back and forth

We are buying new Macs to our studio. One will be main editing suite with Final Cut Studio 2.
Another Mac mini will have Final Cut Express.
I do understand that you cannot open your FCE project in FCS, but can you do it the other way around, using the Mac Mini as "offline suite"?

OK, so far, soo good. But can I open a FCP project in FCE?
(Scenario: I start working in FCE, continue in FCP and return to FCE).
I understand if some effects, etc won't show up in FCE.

  • In Aperture 3, how can I easily move entire projects out of my main Ap Library into other libraries?  My Ap library is running super slow because it's overloaded l so I have created two new libraries, but can't seem to move the projects into them

In Aperture 3, how can I easily move entire projects out of my main Ap Library into other libraries?  My Ap library is running super slow because it's overloaded, so I have created two new libraries, but can't seem to move the projects into them?

    Hello Annabel,
To move entire projects export them as Aperture Libraries, and then import those Libraries into the other Aperture Library:
Select the Project in the Inspector, then
File -> Export -> Project as Library
    In the other Library do:
    File -> Import  -> Library/ Project
But I am not quite convinced, that the size of your current Aperture Library is responsible for the slowness of Aperture - Aperture is designed to cope with huge libraries.
You may want to post your hardware setup and details of your library, and some of the hardware experts here may help you to find the reason for the slowness.
A huge library should only be a problem, if the projects are too big, and if you have many, many smart albums at the root level of your library.
So keep the projects small, and try to move some of your smart albums to lower levels in your folder structure (then Aperture does not need to scan all of your images to build the smart album).
Other reasons for Aperture's slowness may be, e.g.
An overfull system drive and/or external drive (keep at least 20% of your drives empty)
    lack of RAM
a corrupted Aperture Library, that needs repairing
Have you checked those options, before you split your library? It would be a pity to split it, for you would loose the ability to browse all parts at the same time, to use all your images in the Media Browser, etc.

    Léonie

  • Combining two tables without any distinct columns between them

    Folks,

    Hi sidy2j,
According to your description, we need to verify your table structures, and the actual results which you want to get from your tables. Please post more information for analysis.
Assume, if you want to a one to one record mapping between  two tables without any common column between them for joining, you can refer to the following scripts to implement your requirement. For more information, see:

  • Sharing projects between libraries

I'm looking for a solution to share projects in sync between multiple libraries, without having to export & import projects each time. I'd like the shared projects to be in sync between the libraries.
I'm putting together a highlights portfolio, so in each of my many libraries, I have a "best of" project for the selects. I'd like each of these "best of" projects to be seen by a separate library which is just used to make my portfolio. Any time I update the best of in a given library, I'd like that to be reflected in the shared project in the portfolio library.
Is there a solution/workaround for this?
I found a free script that is supposed to make this possible, but I've had no luck with it thus far...
    http://tinyurl.com/ApertureSpanning
    Thanks!
    GPM
    I'm running 2.1.2

Thanks a lot for your response, RB -- I read the page you referenced:
    http://photo.rwboyer.com/2008/09/managing-aperture-2-on-multiple-computers/
And maybe I'm missing something, but I don't believe that either of these two approaches solves my particular problem?
It seems that both approaches require that you import/export projects, or relocate masters, etc. What I'm looking to do is have projects from multiple libraries synced with each other "live", with out having to import/export or manage anything manually.
Simplest example: I have one library called "Brazil," and in it I have a project I've named "Best of Brazil". I have another library called "Portfolio," where I pull together all my best work from various projects. What I want is for the "Best of Brazil" project to show up automatically in the "Portfolio" project. And anytime I'm in the Brazil library & add some new shots to the Best of Brazil project, next time I go into my Portfolio library, those new shots or edits should be automatically in the mirrored Best of Brazil project -- inside the Portfolio library.
It's kind of like seeing & accessing other libraries, but only projects you've designated as shared...
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks a lot!

  • Moving Motion Projects Between Computers

My apologies, as I'm sure this must have been answered elsewhere - however I can't find the answer, so:
I'm moving a Motion project between two computers (Project file & media ) - I can do this easily with Final Cut Projects (you just relink the files) however - even when I "relink" the files in my Motion project - my timeline remains empty (unlike FCP, which will show the files):
What's the best technique to move Motion files between computers?
    Thanks In Advance

Good tip actually - but sadly, it isn't working that way!
I don't get it - could there be anything I'm doing wrong in the transfer/copy procedure? Is there some way I can change the mapping/references in the preferences from absolute to relative to the files?
    Thanks in advance
G5 & MacBook Pro Mac OS X (10.4.9) I actually use the thing

  • Multiple open libraries and combining libraries

It would be nice to have two open libraries and be able to drag between them.
I am picking a small number of images to take with me when I travel. I want to create a new aperture library with these images in the same organization that they are in my original library with all the adjustments and all metadata, as in the original library
I'll be adding photos to this traveling library and will want to combine it in future with the original library including all metadata and corrections made while traveling.
what is the best way to:
    1. isolate my small group for a traveling library, if they are in different projects, and make a new library with them?
    2. Combine original and traveling libraries on return.

This is pretty simple to do. You can export and import entire projects very easily, and everything in that project (photos, albums, books, metadata, adjustments, etc.) goes with it.
So that's what you should do. You can't do it on a full library basis but because a project can be huge you could effectively get by with the tool. I do it all the time when I travel, and it works fantastically well.

  • Easy or otherwise: combining multiple complex ivideo projects into one

I'm tempted to [finally] invest in fcp--just a matter of time--but at this particular moment (urgency) the decision would be made for me if I was sure I could do the following, which in imoviehd has proven well nigh impossible. I have six movie projects, each rather complex, that I want to combine into one movie project (for dvd purposes of letting viewer watch the whole movie straight through, in addition to watching each movie [chapter] separately). I've tried several ways to drag and drop the elements from one imovie project into another, but it is not working at all (the transfer starts out okay, but then it indicates the transfer will be, ahem, several thousand minutes to complete. The movies are between 2 and 88 GB, total run time for all six is 37 minutes.
I guess my question is whether someone can tell me that there's an easier way to do this in fcp.
    thanks for any edification.

This is stupidly simple in FCP, and authoring the dvd you want is stupidly simple in DVDSP.
I've never used imovie, so I've no idea how that works, but in fcp it's a simple copy/paste from one sequence to another until they're all strung together.
But I dunno how to get your material out of imovie and into fcp unless you export the finished pieces, convert them to .mov instead of .dv and import those.

  • Really confused about libraries, events, and projects

    Hello,
I'm brand new to editing and I'm having a hard time understanding the difference between libraries, events and projects. If anyone can explain them for me, that'd be great. Thanks

    Here some reading material:

    And viewing:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wGogEwnX9yE
Hopefully, the above info will clarify everything about the library/event/project hierarchy. The important thing to keep in mind is you can't work without a library; and that library has to hold at least one event. Your event is a folder that organizes your media according to a wide variety of criteria that you can specify. Your project contains the timeline where you assemble your selects, apply your effects to tell your story and it is stored within the event folder.
You will be happy to hear that those who come to FCP X without much traditional NLE experience (sorry, David) usually pick it up very fast. A guy that I work with didn't even have any iMovie experience and after less than 2 hours of DIY learning, cut a very credible show that aired on a local station.
    Good luck.
