Combining libraries with IPhoto 9.5.1

OK, I've been reading other older posts, so hoping someone can help me with newer versions....I have libraries from an old computer, thumbdrive, desktop, etc, some IPhoto versions are quite old...I want to combine all onto an external drive and make a copy that I keep somewhere else. Since I have an old MacBook Pro (2010) version 10.9.5 (I don't want to upgrade to Yosemite), I want to have my computer look for the library on this external drive and not have all those photos on my laptop. That's what I did with my old desktop...anyway...the issue is how to combine all these libraries which actually have the same name....

First copy all of the libraries you want to merge onto your external hard drive.  It should be formatted OS X Extended (journaled).  Upgrade all of the libraries to the same version of iPhoto that your current working library is. Rename each library before copying it to the EHD so they don't overwrite each other.
Once that's done you can use the paid version of  iPhoto Library Manager to merge the multiple libraries into a new library.

  • Merging iPhoto 6 libraries with iPhoto 11

I have a MacbookPro running OS10.4.11 with iPhoto 6 and just bought a new iMac with OS10.7.3 with iPhoto 11.
I currently have iPhoto Library Manger v3.73 on both machines.  I also have three iPhoto Libraries set up - two libraries are on an external hard drive - "2006-2007" and "2008-2010", and the 3rd library, "2011-2012", is on my laptop.
When I bought the new iMac, the Apple Store geniuses were able to move my 2011-2012 library from my laptop to my iMac.  Unfortunately, they refused to merge/move my other two libraries that I have on my external drive.
What I'd like to do is merge all three iPhoto libraries together into one library on my iMac.  What is the best way to do this?  Please give me step-by-step instructions, I'm a duffus when it comes to 'puters! :)
thank you very much in advance!

your need to have good backujp of all of your iPhoto libraries and then convert each one to the latest version - depress the option key and launch iPhoto and use the select library option to select, convert and open each library
Then use the paid version of iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -  to merge the libraries

  • Problems with old Libraries in iPhoto '09 Version 8.0.4

A couple months ago I upgraded to iLife '09 and few days ago I software updated iPhoto to version 8.0.4.
I have numerous iPhoto libraries created with an older version of iPhoto (not sure which) because I have alway found iPhoto to become balky and bog down if the libraries become too large, so every few months I rename the library and move it to an external drive and create a new library in iPhoto. Accessing the libraries was never a problem.
Today I attempted to open one of the older libraries with iPhoto '09, and everything seemed okay after the initial update to the library completed, but now I see that many of the older JPG images will not open to edit or magnify when I double click them. This is true of some but not all JPG images, it does not seem to be a problem with RAW files.
I also can not drag them out of iPhoto onto the desktop or into a folder, and I am unable to export them, either. Also, whereas the older version of iPhoto allowed me to access photos through the library folder, after the library update into '09, that organizational system is gone and there is only a library icon in its place with no access to the files.
So now I have no way to edit, copy, or export many JPG files, and I can not access them in the newly updated/converted library file. Except for viewing them as thumbnails, they are essentially gone.
Any suggestions on how to recover the "lost" JPGs, and any suggestion about what to do with all of my other older libraries?
    Thanks...

    Hmmm,
I installed iPhoto Library Manager and rebuilt the library...
Seems to be okay at first inspection, except that many of the photos are now rotated (appear normal in window, rotated 90-270 degrees when double clicked to edit)...
I also got an error message saying the 229 photos could not be found because the originals could not be located, but everything seems to be here...
    Problem solved...?

  • Moving a merged library created with iPhoto Library Manager

I merged two iPhoto libraries with iPhoto Library Manager 3.5.5 on an external hard disk using an iMac. I have tried to move the new merged library to the internal disk on my laptop, as I wish to travel taking all my photos (about 28,500). However, every time I try to move or copy the merged library it stops after copying about 123 MB (of about 62GB) and I get the following message:
"You can’t copy “Merged Library” because it has the same name as another item on the destination volume, and that volume doesn’t distinguish between upper- and lowercase letters in filenames."
The "same name" reference is to the file it makes every time before copying, which I erase before trying again. What am I doing wrong? How can I transfer this new merged library to my laptop?
    Thank you.

Ok, so how do I correct for this. I ran Time Machine to back up my computer, sent it in to be repaired, and now I want to Restore my stuff. I get that error, but the only thing I've done to the drive is reformatted using Snow Leopard, and didn't see such choices go by. I just want my stuff restored. Can someone explain the difference between "case-sensitive/journaled" and "journaled", and how to change back. Where are these choices?

  • Combining two separate libraries (with two different Apple IDs) into one

My fiance is moving in this weekend, and we hope to get rid of her computer to make space. She has a fairly large iTunes library, some ripped from CD and about 100 purchased from iTunes. I want to move her library and combine it with mine on my computer. I've read through the help files for consolidation, backup, and moving libraries from one computer to another, but none seem to apply to this special case. Once we transfer her files, we plan to cancel her Apple ID account since it wouldn't be authorized on any computers anymore.

You can't cancel the iTunes account.
Besides, you still need it to authorize your computer to play the songs she purchased.
To get the music onto your computer, just copy it over to yours, then File -> Add folder to library and select the folder whwenre you put the music.

  • Can I use multiple iPhoto libraries with Aperture?

I've been using iPhoto to manage my photos (successfully) for many years.  I have multiple themed iPhoto libraries with many thousands of photos in them (ten years' worth of digital plus another fifty years scanned).  I am thinking of downloading Aperture and giving it a try (thanks to an App Store gift card).
Can I use Aperture to edit photos within these iPhoto libraries?  Do the libraries become "common" to both applications, or does duplication occur?  I have limited hard drive space and don't want to create large duplicate files on my iMac.
    Thanks.

I have some 50-100 libraries (haven't counted recently) which occupy most of my hard drive.  I find it easiest to manage my photos with themed libraries (annual, trip, subject).
You could make each of your "themed Libraries" a Folder in Aperture, with all your current Projects and Albums intact.  In this way, you could search across all of your Image at once (e.g.: a Smart Album showing all Images in which you've identified a Face as "Mom"; or filter for the keyword "Sunset").  In general, the more Images in a Library, the more useful that Library is.  I strongly recommend one Library for each photographer (or group of photographers working as a business).  Aperture has no trouble handling enormous Libraries (officially, it supports up to 1,000,000 Images, iirc).
A more advanced Library organization would replace each "themed" Folder+Projects with Albums.  There is no reason to limit your "themes" to the Images in just the Projects contained in a Folder.
My general recommendation has always been to put all your Projects in one Folder (with sub-Folders as needed); and to put all your Albums in another top-level Folder.  In this way you build two structures: a _storage_ structure, in which you put all your Projects, where each Project = one shoot, and an _access_ structure, where you have Albums organized by Folders into whatever groupings you need.
The newest version of Aperture (3.3.1) leans in this direction.  For the first time there is a default division between Project storage and Album storage (one the Library tab of the Inspector, there are now two built-in top-level containers, one for Projects and one for Albums).
A separate issue is where on your system your Library and your Originals are stored.  Aperture allows you to move your Originals to storage on external drives or other non-system drives.  The limitation of the storage available on the system drive is something that all active photographers encounter at some point.  (In Aperture-speak, you would convert Image's Originals from Managed to Referenced using "File➞Relocate Originals".  This isn't something I'd look into right away, but rather after you become familiar with the Aperture interface.

  • HT4736 Taking too long (2 minutes) to locate and download photos into Photo '11 9.5 (902.7 build running on an older Intel based MacBook Pro with iPhoto libraries on a USB2 External HD).  I checked and repaired HD permissions. Any ideas?

Regarding iPhoto '11 9.5 (902.7 build running on an older Intel based MacBook Pro with iPhoto libraries on a USB2 External HD).  I am dealing with iPhoto taking too long to download photos.  Specifically, I rechecked and repaired HD permissions. I am running the most current software my five year old Intel MacBook Pro can run.   What happens is that when I connect an external SD card, or my iPhone, the new version of iPhoto takes up to two full minutes to fully acknowledge the device. Then locate new photos and be ready to download them to my external HD.  I am kind of concerned about this.  This has never happened before.
I take 20,000 photos a year.  I really don't want to lose any.  Or is there something I am doing wrong?  Or need to be aware of?  Any experienced suggestions would be appreciated.  Thanks.  Have a great day.
PS.... The cameras I use are Canon SX-30, Nikon D3100, and my iPhone 4S.  Thanks again for your assistance.

Hello Old Toad.... Those sound like great ideas.
I thought I checked and repaired disk permissions on my main boot HD.  That boot disk is Mac OS Extended (Journaled)  Capacity 749.3 GB.  Available 562.53 GB.   BUT.... now that I think of it.... the Seagate external HD with USB2 interface is: Mac OS Extended (Journaled), Capacity 639.79 GB, Available 36.2 GB with my latest iPhoto Library 517.37 GB that was already scanned & updated to be read by the latest iPhoto version.
I'll try your suggestions tonight as far as double checking 'permissions' and setting up a tiny test library.
Or maybe it's time to fill up another External HD?
I appreciate your and anyone else's suggestions to try.
Have a great day. ~~ David in Rochester NY

Hi... and thanx for your help...
I did not think that I would have to mess with my firewall, as long as I am talking of useres on the same computer, but I guess I was wrong.
Your advice helps very much, but only as long as I am still logged in with my user name. I does not work when only my kids are logged in. There has to be a way to use these libraries without the need to log in the user that has created those folders...

You can delete the empty one by dragging it to the trash ( test everything before emptying the trash)
Merging libraries requires iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -  it is the only current solution to merging libraries

  • Iphoto help - duplicate libraries with duplicate pictures

i am in need of some serious help!!!!
in an effort to clean up my pics in iphoto i now have multiple iphoto libraries with many duplicate pictures in these libraries
this is wasting space on my mac and im pretty sure its the rason my mac is sooooo slow
can anyone out there help me??
    thanks =)

I agree with Larry in that use the paid version of iPLM to merge A with B into X with the preference in iPLM set to not import duplicates.  The merge X with C into Y.  Y should then have all of your photos without duplicates.  After each merge check the merged library to make sure it has all of the photos of the two libraries you're merging before deleting those two libraries.
NOTE:  some photos may have different names and dates but be duplicates and would not be caught in the process.  If there are any there shouldn't be many.

  • Iphoto shows two photo libraries with the same name, one in small letters the other in all capital letters. they both open the same library and the only one in my computer. How do delete the capital letrs one as the one in the pictures folder is in

In my  iPhoto application when I select switch libraries It shows 2 libraries with the same name, but one has the name is in Capital letters.
They both open the same library which is in the Pictures folder. This is the only library I can see and the name is not in capital letters?
How do I get rid of the one in capital letters

    What is your iPhoto version?
when I select switch libraries It shows 2 libraries with the same name, but one has the name is in Capital letters.
In the Library Chooser Panel look for the pathes to the two duplicate libraries. You will see the location of the libraries in the path bar at the bottom of the window when you select one of the libraries. Does it show both libraries in the same folder?

  • Is it possible to sync multiple iphoto libraries with the iPhone?

I have two libraries in iPhoto 08 but iTunes only lets me pick the default iPhoto library to sync with my iPhone. Is there a way to sync the iPhone with multiple iPhoto libraries?

You are correct.  This used to work in the past although admittedly I haven't tried it for some time as it was of no direct use for my purposes.
If the goal is to see another MobileMe account's calendar(s) on your iOS device then an alternative would be to share the calendar(s) in question to yourself.
    Example:
Assume you currently have MobileMe user account A on your iPhone.
Login to MM user account B with me.com which has the calendar you wish to have access to on your iPhone
    Click on Calendars
Click on the Share button for the calendar you wish to see added to your iPhone.
Type in the MobileMe email address for MM user account A and set it for read & write access
Login to MM user account A on me.com
Go to calendars and accept the invitation to join the calendar you sent from MM account B
Go your iPhone (you may need to turn it on and off to make the calendars refresh ) and check your calendars, you should now have the other calendars added to your MobileMe account A's calendar
Note: You can repeat step # 3 for each of the calendars you wish to see on your iPhone.
