Combining old itunes Libraries

Hi,
I have 3 different macs that have music in itunes that was downloaded when that was the computer I was using at the time (laptops) now I want to combine all 3 libraries in one "House" Computer. How do I do it. I have very few itunes purchases.
Thanks,
KL

KL,
I feel your pain. I put 4 desktop libraries, three laptop libraries and four iPods together to initiate the shared "Master" using Doug Adams' iTunes Library Manager (iTLM) <http://dougscripts.com/itunes/itinfo/ituneslibrarymanager.php>, and the companion "Export/Import Between Libraries v1.6" scripts. For connections, I used a combination of Firewire target mode, Airport and a Firewire external HD. I use Sharepoints <http://www.hornware.com/sharepoints/> and a Mac Mini attached to a separate external drive holding the "Master" iTunes library. Each Mac (and user) has their own iTunes library, but is able to see, play and export or import to the "Master". I haven't tried Leopard's shared volumes yet, nor upgraded to iTunes 7.5.
There are two things that you should do as preparatory work. 1. Check the iTunes version of all your machines. If they aren't all the same, I would first use iTLM to make individual backups onto either an external drive or the G5 HD. Then upgrade all the laptop and G5 iTunes to the same version. 2. Be sure to deauthorize your purchased iTunes music at the store and then re-authorize the Macs afterward as desired.
Hope this helps

Did you ever figure this out or get help on this issue? I am looking to do the same thing.

  • How do I combine multiple itunes libraries

I have multiple (6) itunes libraries scattered across my iMac 24", my Powerbook laptop and 2 external hard drives. Each library has different songs, playlists and meta data.  I just bought a Glyph GT062E 4TB external hard drive. I would like to merge all 6 libraries into one and put that library onto my Glyph.
I'm not worried about play counts, date added, etc. I just want ALL of my music in one place. I am concerned about duplicates and how to remove them. Also, after the consolidation is complete, what is the best way to check that I have copied all of the files from each library before deleting the old libraries?  I will make a back up of the consolidated library once it is organized and managable.

The simple solution is to go into the iTunes Music Folder on my hard drive and copy all of the songs into my External Library. Like this:
Hard Drive > Loren's Desktop > Music > iTunes Music
Similarly with your secondary library. You should be able to drag files from there to your External Drive.

  • Finding and combining multiple itunes libraries

I believe I have set up multiple itunes libraries that are located on different drives (the internal and an external). I'd like to find them and combine them into one place. Any help would be appreciated..
    macbook running OS X 10.9.4

The .itl is simply a listing of what tracks you have selected for that library.  It does not include the music itself.  I have never imported another library so I don't know if the methods Niel outlines will actually move your music files into the same library folder or simply use them where they are. You can easily check by seeing if they have moved to the folder, or by get info on a track in iTunes and look at the information on where the actual file it uses is located.
Read the links below on what actually makes up a complete library and why combining them involves merging multiple items.

  • Restore album art from saved itunes or combine 2 itunes libraries

I have two laptops, each with the same version of iTunes ( 11.2.0 ) but with different albums. There are no duplicates between the libraries. I can save and restore a single iTunes library with no problems. I get all the albums and all the cover art. All the albums have the correct cover art. I would like to combine these two libraries on a single laptop. The laptops are running windows 7. I can take a smaller iTunes library with 39 albums and drag and drop to the larger library ( over 1000 albums ) I get all the albums, but only half or so of the album's cover art comes across. I have tried to drag and drop the entire iTunes library, then I tried to add folders to the larger library, all with the same result - all the albums come across, but only half of the album art comes across. ( I am working with a small library right now because I want to do this with another library with over 500 albums. )
A lot of the cover art was added one by one, because the 'get album art' could not find a lot of the cover art. I can go back and manually add all the cover art again, but that is a long project.
Is there a method that I can save the library, add it to a different iTunes library, and get all the cover art to come with the albums?
This seems like it should be easy to do, but I have not been able to get it keep all the cover art from the transfered library.
    thank you.

  • Combining  two itunes libraries.

I have two different computers with two different itunes libraries. i want to combine these libraries without getting duplicate songs. is there a software i can use to combine these libraries.

I don't know of any programs that will do that... though my only suggestion would be to burn a DVD with all of the MP3s from one library and then go to the other library and put them in, and it will ask you if you want to replace the duplicates, or not.. and if you don't want duplicates, you click on replace...
    hope this helps..

  • Combine two itunes libraries thatare one on computer

I have two iTunes libraries that are on my computer (I use the shift button when opening to choose which one I want to open).  So since I have two (one for iPhone and one for iPod) the music in them is mismatched because I use my iPhone more often and downloaded songs get placed into that library.  My question is do I have to manually go through and find out which songs aren't in both libraries and import them or can I do this automatically? I don't want to merge them, I just want them to have the same music in them so I can just uncheck which ones I don't want to sync.  Any help is appreciated, thanks.

Drag the larger library to the external drive normally, launch iTunes with the Option key held down, choose it, drag the media files from the second library into the open iTunes application window, and then import the playlists.

  • How do you combine two iTunes libraries - my husband I have separate iTunes libraries and want to combine our music

iTunes: my husband and I have two separate iTunes libaries and would like to combine them.  I have tried homesharing but as my laptop is not an Apple I can't seem to find advice online with Apple.
    Can anyone help.

iTunes- How to share music between different user accounts on a single computer
You cannot merge two separate libraries across user accounts. Photos does not have the function of merging different Photos.library files. If you have Aperture then you can merge the two before migrating over to Photos.

  • Combining several iTUNES libraries

My hard drive crashed and I in trying to recover iTUNES (about 30 gb of music) I find that the music library has files in at least 2 places, perhaps three.
When I got my G5, I think iTUNEs left my old music files where they were and started a new library referencing the old one (is that possible?).
Anyway, I want to combine them all in one place now that the hard drive has been replaced.
    How do I do this?

    Sean:
Sara's advice is correct, but I want to warn you about consolidation. Do this ONLY ONCE, otherwise you will end up with multiple copies of the same track in the iTunes Music folder (not the iTunes Library). These duplicates are linked to the Library database and if you delete them, you will lose the link in iTunes and end up with on all of your tracks.
I actually would recommend that you set the location of your iTunes Music folder, make sure that the Copy Music Files to iTunes Music folder is checked, and then just add everything either by dragging the files onto the iTunes Library window or using the Add command (File>>Add). Much more control, less likely to bork everything up.
    Just a word of caution.

  • How To combine two Itunes libraries, and run Itunes off of external device

    Hi,
I have a very blonde question to ask. I have the ipad2 (now very old) and a Macbook Air - Currently I have one itunes library on my Macbook Air, and one on my itunes - not sure how I did that, but here we are.
I would like to combine both the libaries - as one seems to have my older apps, all my music and movies, and the other on my Macbook air seems to have all my newly downloaded apps.
How do I merge both of them so that all my info is in once place, and how do I get my itunes to run back off of the external device, as there is not enough space on my macbook air.

By "device" I presume you mean your iPad?
Computers running iTunes are intended to be the master source for your collection.  i-devices are designed to be synced from a computer's collection.  They are not intended to be the main repository of your collection.  If you need that, consider buying an external hard drive for your media collection.  You can transfer items purchased from Apple from a device to a computer, but depeneding upon your country and iCloud availability you should also be able to download them from the iTunes Store to your computer again too.
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848 - this is just purchased music, not all
Downloading (using iOS or computer) past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store - http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2519 - enabled with iTunes 10.3 and newer; not all media formats are available in all countries (see: iTunes in the Cloud and iTunes Match Availability by Country - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5085 ); apps, books (not audiobooks), music, t.v. shows, and movies (some - not all studios have permitted this).  Downloading previously purchased movies and TV shows requires iTunes 10.6 or later.  Discontinued items not available. For items not included in the iCloud list (e.g., ringtones, audiobooks), or locations or computer systems where iCloud is not (yet?) available, you only get one download per fee paid.  Apple recommends  "you always back up your iTunes library in the event that a purchased item is no longer available on the iTunes Store."

  • Combining purchased itunes libraries from two apple ids that were both created by me?

I created a new Apple ID.  I have an entirely new Comcast account.  The old comcast account has my username and all of my purchased iTunes music/videos/tvshows/etc. and now I am currently using a Gmail email account for my apple ID.  I just would like to try and combine my old purchased media into my newly purchased media.  I do not currently see a smooth transitional way to copy them over through iTunes.  Any support/help/music suggestions are welcome.

  • Combine two iTunes Libraries...

    All,
I have an iMac G5 @ work and a PowerBook G4 @ home. Each has an iTunes library. Short question...Is there any way for me to get my music off of my iMac and onto my PowerBook? I plan to use my external FW HD drive to make the move.
Details...In addition, I'd like for my Mp3s to retain their tags and album artwork. I mean I know that I can get the music off and onto my HD but how can i make it truly merge the two libraries and keep all the extra info like artists and titles and even start and stop times and artwork.
Thank you very much in advance for your time and help.

Great article. But, I'd need to have both computers networked...meaning I'd have to bring my PB to work (not a problem...but my manager may not like watching me work on two macs just to get my music sorted out.)
I thought there might be a way to use my external HD which I can connect and copy over quickly and discreetly.

  • Combining two iTunes libraries from two computers onto a third

Hi there -- I haven't seen anything in the archives that is this exact situation, but if you know where it is in there, please point me in the right direction!
I have two separate collections of iTunes music on two different older Macs. I want to merge these collections into one that will now live on a newer MacBook Pro with iTunes 11.1.5. I can figure out how to get one or the other imported onto the MacBook but not both together as one merged collection. I'm getting confused about how to get all the media and the library files transferred. Help!
Can anyone walk me through the steps of what I need to do this? It must be possible, right??
    Many thanks in advance.

There isn't really a way to ideally merge them.  Methods such as the one linked in an earlier post have you make sure your media are more or less in one or two locations by using the organize/consolidate step for each library, then adding media files from the secondary library to the primary one as new files.  If you have a lot of content overlap you will end up with duplicates.
So, use consolidate/organize to make sure you have each iTunes library's content intact in one place on each computer.  You don't need or want to consolidate to another drive or computer, just make each one internally complete.  Choose a library to export intact.  Copy the entire iTunes folder to the other computer.  If the third/new computer has no iTunes content simply overwrite the iTunes folder there.  If it has content then you'll have to do additional steps but I won't bother with those yet.  Start iTunes in the new home and make sure the primary library is working (it should look identical to the original one).  Now you can copy the media folder alone from the other computer.  Copy it onto the Automatically Add To itunes folder on the new computer.  It will add the files as new tracks.  If you want to do some hand-weeding of particular duplicate albums you can also be more selective in what you add to the second library.
It is possible to export playlists from the secondary library and then import them into the new library.  note that a playlist is simply a text listing of which files are in the list and the files will have to be on the new computer in the identical locations (the point of consolidating).
