Combining PDFs - simple and free

is there a way to combine PDF files into a single PDF file? Looking for a free and/or Open source solution.
Cheers,
Noah

You can combine individual PDFs into one PDF using one of these freeware utilities.
PDFMergeX @ http://www.malcom-mac.com/blog/pdfmergex/
joinPDF @ http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/16604
Combine PDFs @ http://www.monkeybreadsoftware.de/Freeware/CombinePDFs.shtml>
PDFLab (join & split) @ http://pdflab.en.softonic.com/mac
I use PDFLab.

  • A simple and free way of reducing PDF file size using Preview

Note: this is a copy and update of a 5 year old discussion in the Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard discussions which you can find here: https://discussions.apple.com/message/6109398#6109398
This is a simple and free solution I found to reduce the file size of PDFs in OS X, without the high cost and awful UI of Acrobat Pro, and with acceptable quality. I still use it every day, although I have Acrobat Pro as part of Adove Creative Cloud subscription.
Since quite a few people have found it useful and keep asking questions about the download location and destination of the filters, which have changed since 2007, I decided to write this update, and put it in this more current forum.
Here is how to install it:
Download the filters here: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/41548940/PDF%20compression%20filters%20%28Un zip%20and%20put%20in%20your%20Library%20folder%29.zip
Unzip the downloaded file and copy the filters in the appropriate location (see below).
Here is the appropriate location for the filters:
This assumes that your startup disk's name is "Macintosh HD". If it is different, just replace "Macintosh HD" with the name of your startup disk.
If you are running Lion or Mountain Lion (OS X 10.7.x or 10.8.x) then you should put the downloaded filters in "Macintosh HD/Library/PDF Services". This folder should already exist and contain files. Once you put the downloaded filters there, you should have for example one file with the following path:
    "Macintosh HD/Library/PDF Services/Reduce to 150 dpi average quality - STANDARD COMPRESSION.qfilter"
If you are running an earlier vesion of OS X (10.6.x or earlier), then you should put the downloaded filters in "Macintosh HD/Library/Filters" and you should have for example one file with the following path:
"Macintosh HD/Library/Filters/Reduce to 150 dpi average quality - STANDARD COMPRESSION.qfilter"
Here is how to use it:
Open a PDF file using Apple's Preview app,
Choose Export (or Save As if you have on older version of Mac OS X) in the File menu,
    Choose PDF as a format
In the "Quartz Filter" drop-down menu, choose a filter "Reduce to xxx dpi yyy quality"; "Reduce to 150 dpi average quality - STANDARD COMPRESSION" is a good trade-off between quality and file size
    Here is how it works:
These are Quartz filters made with Apple Colorsinc Utility.
    They do two things:
downsample images contained in a PDF to a target density such as 150 dpi,
enable JPEG compression for those images with a low or medium setting.
Which files does it work with?
It works with most PDF files. However:
It will generally work very well on unoptimized files such as scans made with the OS X scanning utility or PDFs produced via OS X printing dialog.
It will not further compress well-optimized (comrpessed) files and might create bigger files than the originals,
For some files it will create larger files than the originals. This can happen in particular when a PDF file contains other optomizations than image compression. There also seems to be a bug (reported to Apple) where in certain circumstances images in the target PDF are not JPEG compressed.
What to do if it does not work for a file (target PDF is too big or even larger than the original PDF)?
First,a good news: since you used a Save As or Export command, the original PDF is untouched.
You can try another filter for a smaller size at the expense of quality.
The year being 2013, it is now quite easy to send large files through the internet using Dropbox, yousendit.com, wetransfer.com etc. and you can use these services to send your original PDF file.
There are other ways of reducing the size of a PDF file, such as apps in the Mac App store, or online services such as the free and simple http://smallpdf.com
    What else?
Feel free to use/distribute/package in any way you like.

    Thanks ioscar.
The original link should be back online soon.
I believe this is a Dropbox error about the traffic generated by my Dropbox shared links.
I use Dropbox mainly for my business and I am pretty upset by this situation.
Since the filters themsemves are about 5KB, I doubt they are the cause for this Dropbox misbehavior!
Anyway, I submitted a support ticket to Dropbox, and hope everything will be back to normal very soon.
In the meantime, if you get the same error as ioscar when trying to download them, you can use the link in the blog posting he mentions.
This is out of topic, but for those interested, here is my understanding of what happened with Dropbox.
I did a few tests yesterday with large (up to 4GB) files and Dropbox shared links, trying to find the best way to send a 3 hour recording from French TV - French version of The Voice- to a friend's 5 year old son currently on vacation in Florida, and without access to French live or catch up TV services. One nice thing I found is that you can directly send the Dropbox download URL (the one from the Download button on the shared link page) to an AppleTV using AirFlick and it works well even for files with a large bitrate (except of course for the Dropbox maximum bandwidth per day limit!). Sadly, my Dropbox shared links were disabled before I could send anything to my friend.
I may have used  a significant amount of bandwidth but nowhere near the 200GB/day limit of my Dropbox Pro account.
I see 2 possible reasons to Dropbox freaking out:
    - My Dropbox Pro account is wronngly identified as a free account by Dropbox. Free Dropbox accounts have a 20GB/day limit, and it is possible that I reached this limit with my testing, I have a fast 200Mb/s internet access.
    - Or Dropbox miscalculates used bandwidth, counting the total size of the file for every download begun, and I started a lot of downloads, and skipped to the end of the video a lot of times on my Apple TV.

  • The function to combine pdf files and the function to add bookmarks stopped working in 10.x

We had VBA scripts in Access 2003 running with Acrobat 7.0 standard version to combine pdf files and to add bookmarks. The scripts worked fine. Now we installed 10.x and the functions stopped working. Does anyone share the same experience?
In the scripts, we just call the OLE object with the code like:
        Set acroOrigPdfDoc = CreateObject("AcroExch.PDDoc")
        Set acroNewPdfDoc = CreateObject("AcroExch.PDDoc")
Then we have the call "acroOrigPdfDoc.InsertPages" and "acroOrigPdfDoc.Save" to save the combined pdf files. All these functions work fine under 7.x. Under 10.x, they stopped working without any error messages.
    Can anyone help me?

Post your problem in the forum for Acrobat SDK.

  • Combining PDF's and opening combined PDF

I am getting the 'Error 1' message when I try to open combined PDF files. I am also unable to combine PDF's and it says to uninstall and reinstall product which I have tried on many occasions.

Moving this discussion to the Adobe Reader forum.
Mnqps Gilad is correct you will need to utilize the Acrobat XI Professional trial or purchase the software.  You can find more information at https://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat.html?promoid=JOLIR.

  • Combined PDF's and created links to original PDF's

Combined multiple PDF's from several individuals into on E-book.  I also create a table of contents with links to original PDF's within the combined document.  Problem is that each link opens in a different magnification. Page 1 is 100%, 1st link 93%, 5 link 56%, etc.  Is it possible to have all pages open with the same magnification? (i.e. all open @ 100%).
    Thanks in advance.

If the combined PDFs are within a single PDF file —
Use the Link Action "Go to a page view".
As the Create Go to View dialog states:
"Use the scrollbars, mouse, and zoom tools to select the target view..."
During this activity you can establish the desired zoom (page magnification of 100%).
Once the activity is complete, click the Set Link button.

  • Combine PDF's and put filename in footer of each page

    Hello,
I've got about a 1000 individual pages to print,
so I figured in order to avoid having to click each page open and print it,
I can combine the documents into one document,
and only launch the print command once,
and then have a coffee until its is finished
    But I'd like Acrobat to actually put the filename of each document in the footer of the corresponding page when I combine the documents; so I know afterwards which page is from which document. Is there a simple (easy) way to do this;
or will I have to enter the footer into each page separately?
    Thanks,
    Jan

Then go to Advanced - Document Processing - Batch Processing and then create
a new batch process and select the command you want to use (probably add
header/footer or something similar) and the input folder and save options.
    That's it, basically.

  • Combining PDFs - drag and drop errors

We regularly assemble large numbers of documents by gathering pages from 5 or more seperate documents using various drag and drop methods.
As it's a simple collation, we'd been able to simply drag a document icon from the finder to the corrent point in the final documents pages/thumbnail view to add it.
This works well when combining two documents - but when you combine three or more, you get a very strange behaviour:
Acrobat will continue to re-copy content from the first drag and dropped document, rather than content from the subsequent documents!
    And this drives us crazy.
Our workaround requires us to open each document one at a time in thumbnail view and drag between these views - which seems pointless when you're moving the entire content of each document into the other.
Anyone else experienced this issue? Anyone have any insights?
    (Running Acrobat 8.2.5)

  • Can i combine pdf, word and powerpoint into 1 pdf, and add page number?

hi, i've been tasked to create a proposal combining these document types into 1 pdf. does anyone know if i can add page number as well, before i pay for subscription?
    thank you!!

    Hi,
Combine Files tool in PDF Pack can combine multiple files into a single PDF file, but adding page number to each page of the single PDF file has be done in Adobe Acrobat.
You can subscribe to Acrobat Plus or download Acrobat XI Pro trial version  from www.adobe.com.  Please see more information about Acrobat Plus subscription at https://www.acrobat.com/acrobatplus/en/home.html?trackingid=JPZKR.
How to add page number in PDF file using Acrobat XI Pro:
    1. Open a PDF file
    2. Select "Tools" from top right corner
    3. Select "Pages" tab
    4. Select "Header & Footer"
    5. Select "Add Header & Footer" from pull down menu
    6. Select location for page number then click "Insert Page Number" button
    7. Click "OK" button

  • Right Click convert to pdf - Gone AND Combining word docs and pdfs gone

    Hello everyone,
I am on a Lenovo all in one think centre m92z, i have a creative cloud membership and have the most current version of acrobat xi pro. Up until 2 weeks ago i used to be able to right click and convert any file to a pdf, now that seems to have dissapeared... anyone know how to get that back?
Right click on a word file and it doesnt give me any options for acrobat at all, except an open with
Further more i cant even combine pdf's and word docs in the "combine files" dialogue box where you can drag and drop etc.

I am having the same issue, I have tried repairing the installation and it did not work, I have uninstalled and then reinstalled and still no right click options. I have 3 computers with this issue and each of them when you right click will not show any of the acrobat options, but they do have a blank line (no text) that when clicked will open the combine window. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

  • How do you make "Acrobat X Pro" open the "combine pdf" window in the foreground?

How do you make "Acrobat X Pro" open the "combine pdf" window in the foreground?
I am using a "Windows 7" computer at work with "Acrobat X Pro" and I'm constantly combining
    pdf's and tiff's in Acrobat.
It would be nice if when I select 30 or 40 files to combine, the
"Combine Supported Files in Acrobat" window would open in the
foreground, not behind the 10 or so windows already open.
I have been researching this for some time now with no solution.
If the answer is that "IT CAN'T BE DONE", then that's fine. At least
I will have an answer and can stop searching. If (as I suspect) it can
be done, then kindly supply me with "step by step" instructions.

Something that works  (provides Acrobat the application precedence in the OS that is requisite for this) --
Minimize the 10 or so application windows before engaging use of Acrobat's "combine".
That'll let the Acrobat dialog windows display front and center.

    Hi ,
I guess that was a bug in that version .
It does not happen in Acrobat XI and Acrobat DC .The window comes right in front of everything else .
I wonder that was a bug and that was fixed the other versions.
You could upgrade to the latest Acrobat version ,i.e Acrobat DC and you would not experience this anymore .

  • Applescript Acrobat combine pdfs

    Hi,
I've tried and failed to create a script that takes two PDF files I've selected in the finder, open Acrobat Pro and use the Combine feature (File > Combine > Merge Files into a Single PDF...), saving them out with the filename taken from the clipboard.
The Automator combine pdfs application and other off-the-shelf products are no good to me as they rely upon choosing files from a dialog box, and the fonts in the resulting pdf can also become corrupted.
So if I go to the Finder and select a file, copy its name, then select a second file, I want a script to combine these two selected PDFs into one, using Acrobat. The filename becomes the name of the first file I copied.
Can anyone help? Many, many thanks if you can: I have a few hundred of these to do.

I don't use Acrobat. Nevertheless, the following script should do exactly what you are asking for using Preview.app. instead.
set theTitle to (the clipboard) & "*" -- remove the asterisk if you wish
set theApp to POSIX file "/Applications/Preview.app" as alias
    tell application "Finder"
        set S to selection
if S is {} then return
repeat with thisItem in items of S
if not (name extension of thisItem is "pdf") then return
        end repeat
        open S using theApp
    end tell
    tell application "Preview" to activate
tell application "System Events" to tell process "Preview"
set windowName to name of window 1
tell menu 1 of menu item "Sidebar" of menu 1 of menu bar item "View" of menu bar 1
if menu item "Hide Sidebar" exists then click menu item "Hide Sidebar"
            click menu item "Show Sidebar"
        end tell
        keystroke "a" using {command down} -- Select All
        keystroke "p" using {option down, command down} -- Print Selected Pages…
repeat until sheet 1 of window 1 exists
            delay 0.1
        end repeat
click menu button "PDF" of sheet 1 of window 1
click menu item "Save as PDF…" of menu 1 of menu button "PDF" of sheet 1 of window 1
        keystroke theTitle
        keystroke "d" using command down
        keystroke return
if button "Replace" of sheet 1 of window "Save" exists then
click button "Replace" of sheet 1 of window "Save"
        end if
repeat while sheet 1 of window windowName exists
            delay 0.1
        end repeat
        keystroke "w" using {command down}

  • Merge and Combine PDF files in a numerical order

    Greetings!
I'm using Adobe Acrobat to create a photo LookBook or an eBook. I'm importing and merging straight from .JPEG's and Acrobat work's great. The JPEG's are sorted by capture date, renamed and numbered as such: "10_File.Name.jpg". However, once I attempt to merge over 100 files I noticed that the numerical order of the file names is wrong. You'll notice in the example below that when viewed by name, the three digit numbers begin after 10. Well, in this example it's twelve. This affects to page order of the combined .PDF file. How can I maintain consistent name order to avoid assembling the finished ebook by implementing two workflow steps. Meaning the first step to combine the double digit numbers, then the second step to combine the three digit numbers. What can I do to resolve this issue?
    Greatly appreciated!

    Try it with a leading zero ( 003_, 007_, 008_, 010_, 011_, and 012_ ).
    Be well...
