Combining Rollover Caption and Click Box?
Hi all,
I wonder if anybody can solve this problem please.
I am creating an interactive simulation to familarize users
with a clients new web app.
For each button, I have created a roll over caption (which
describes the button when rolled over). I have also put a click box
in the exact same place. When clicked, it takes the user to a
different slide which shows the effects of the click.
After the user is done with the slide, I have created a
button which wil take them back to the original slide.
The problem is, on going back to the original slide, the
rollover caption still appear on screen. It disappears eventually
after a user rolls over and out of the button.
I have figured out that it must be because:
1)the user rolls over the area and the caption appears
2)if he rolls out, then it disappears
3)BUT if the user rolls over the hotspot and clicks the click
box, then the Rollover caption never registers the mouse rolling
out of the hotspot, because the presentation jumps to another
slide.
So when you return to the original slide, the caption
remains. As I said, it disappears eventually but looks very
unprofessional.
Please please can anybody help? This is driving me crazy! Is
there any way around it at all?
Rollover Persistence Bug?
Can't post my project unfortunately. But trust me, I know
what I am doing :) kind of...
My rollover + buttons have a bug with the rollover, much the
same as isanmiguel. Going "up" is no problem, works as expected.
Going back to previous slides is a problem in that the rollover
from the previous screen is displayed under the "new" rollover.
This happens even when I move the rollover (ala Captiv8r's
recommendation). The "bad" rollover does NOT display when
navigating, it simply "appears" underneath (or in plain view when I
moved rollover away from button) when arriving at earlier slide.
Structure: 5 Slide project explaining website GUI. Three tabs
have rollovers + click boxes allowing interactive explanation. All
clips are 3.0 seconds, with an invisible button to side pausing
clip at 1.5 sec.
This behavior is not what I would expect, any recommendations
please? Perhaps I should be doing something different?
BTW, I just checked the "hover previous slide" thread, and
noted that going "back in time" is not handled well by Captivate 2.
So much for interactive sandboxes where user could "construct"
learning at their own pace by interacting with a non-linear
workspace. Sigh, it works in PowerPoint. (I did not import from
ppt)

I am using the keyboard function keys to navigate a simulation using Click Boxes. For instance, F7 advances the simulation to the next screen, but if the learner selects F5, a failure caption displays. I have tried deleting and re-entering the click box, placing the click box at the top of the timeline levels, starting the click box at 0 and 0.5, making the click box visible and invisible, and make the click box the entire size of the screen.
Well, I guess that's that. Thanks for replying, I do appreciate it or else I would have been trying for days, wasting all sorts of time.
Until we meet again,

Hi
I was recently adding a piece of audio to a click box.
I want the user to click on the click box and have the audio play. However I found that doing this disbled the click box from being clicked. It would pause, but then I couldn't click it.
I set it so it was 'Pause project until user clicks' and I set the audio to 'Stop slide audio when paused' yet nothing worked. I then removed the audio from the click box and still the click box didn't work. I tried deleting the click box from the project and inserting a new click box and still that didn't work.
I started the project from stratch without adding any audio anywhere and it all worked fine.
Could someone advise as to where I could be going wrong?
ThanksI just ran into a similar problem (I think) and figured out what I was doing wrong.
In my case, I wanted a Homer Simpson "DOH!" to play when a person clicked on a certain area on the screen. Doesn't matter whether it be visible or not. The thing to remember is that the audio will play at whatever point you put the click box on the screen. What I was doing wrong was putting the audio in the clickbox itself. I had to put the audio in the secondary box. The box that says type success/failure/hint text here. You can insert audio into those as well.
So, my failure box is where I placed the DOH audio, and where I typed a big, red DOH for the text. I placed the actual clickbox in the place where I wanted to trigger those two things, and when the DOH text hit the stage, the DOH audio came right along with it.
I think that's more or less what you were looking for, and I was very pleased to find it that easy. -
Rollover animation and click combination problem
Hey everyone....thanks in advance for the help
I'm trying to edit an old Flash 8 in CS4, so I'm using AS2.0
My problem is I have a menu bar that animates on screen from left to right on load
and then it animates and plays a sound on rollover. I can't for the life of me get it to be able to hyperlink properly. I've gotten it to hyperlink on click, but then the rollover effect stops working. I've gotten it to hyperlink and rollover, but then the background covers up the graphics....it's frustrating the heck out of me!
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.change its timeline rollover/rollout animation to use actionscript only to animate it.

I've got a project where I've created rollover captions under
click boxes. The click boxes take you to different screens within
the training which contain buttons to return you to the original
screen with the rollover caption/click boxes. The problem is that
when you return to that screen, the rollover caption that was
clicked previously still displays until you move your mouse over
and away from the rollover area again. The "stuck" caption is
covering portions of the screen that need to be visible. Ever
happened to anyone else? Fixes? Thanks.
P.S. I thought after my initial post that it might be
something to do with the fade in/out on the caption, but no such
luck. Still sticking.Major sorry on this one, but that is something that just
happens, no idea why, but I have actually used that effect as an
indicator that "you were here".

Suggestion: Click Box needs option to display success/failure caption until next click
As it stands right now, if I want to put several click boxes on a page and have the success captions for each appear in the same location, I can only set the success/failure caption to display for a limited amount of time. That is the only way to make the text disappear from the screen. The problem is, I want to have several different click boxes. When the user clicks, the success caption should display. Then the user shoudl be able to click on another click box and have the success caption for that appear in the same location. The problem is the success caption from the previous click box may still be displayed (depending on how long it was set to display for). There really needs to be an option to select that says display until next click. It does no good to guess how long a user will want to read the success/failure text before they decide to click on another text box.
You have the same problem with audio. As it is right now, a user can click on several click boxes and have several different audio tracks playing simultaneously. There needs to be an option to disable the first audio track upon clicking the next click box.
I can't believe this problem hasn't been fixed before this. It is a very annoying problem. I never had half the problems I have with Captivate, when I used Authorware. If there is some kind of work-around I'd like to know what it is.My suggestion would be that you think a little further outside the box to solve this 'issue'.
It appears to me that you want to display information in captions that appear and disappear based on user interaction, correct? AND you also want audio to play at the same time, but you don't want more than one audio track to play, correct?
To achieve what you want requires at least two separate mouse events. One event triggers the caption and audio to appear. The other must trigger any previous captions to disappear and immediately shut off their audio. Since you don't know which of your objects will be the first one interacted with by the user, all of them must be set up to check for any previously invoked captions and audio before turning on their own caption and audio.
Now all of this CAN be done using Captivate's variables and advanced actions. But there IS a much simpler solution staring you in the face. Why is it essential that all of this MUST happen with mouse clicks? Why not use mouse overs events instead?
Captivate provides rollover caption and rollover image objects for which you can attach audio to the object that appears on rollover. These objects have two mouse events (rollover and rollout). Rollover triggers the caption to appear so that the text displays and it's audio plays, while the rollout triggers the caption to disappear and automatically shut off the audio. This means that the user merely needs to move their mouse around the screen rolling over the hot spots to see information and hear audio. And if you just place a click box or button on the slide to pause the playhead, your user can spend as much time as they want reviewing the content before moving on. You don't have to worry about rewinding the playhead with Advanced Actions because clicks on your content objects would resume play.
These rollover objects can be set up in seconds with audio attached. I'm surprised more Captivate authors don't use them given how easy they are to apply in comparison to other click-driven solutions using Advanced Actions. -
Click boxes and buttons not working in Captivate 3 published projects
I really, really, hope that someone can help me...
we are migrating from Centra/Saba LMS to Connect Pro LMS and while taking our "old" SCORM projects and posting them to the Connect Pro server we have encountered an issue...and the reason it's very hard to trouble shoot is that it's not all of the projects....??
Once a project is pulished none of the buttons or click boxes are working - for instance we use a play button on the frist slide for students to enter the course - you click it nothing happens (except when you mouse over the button it does change color)...same with the click boxes - I can use the progress bar to move froward but anything I click just doesn't respond...
Has anyone encountered this? and I hope know something we can do?
THANKS SO MUCH,
JenDo your published projects work outside of your LMS?
Or is it just inside the new LMS that it isn't working?
Usually buttons and click boxes not working is because your slides are pausing before the button becomes active.
What version of Captivate and Flash are you using? -
Greetings - I am a new user of Captivate 7, subscription version. I am taking tutorials and cannot get the rollover caption and area to work. They simply appear as two objects. Mousing does not affect appears or disappearance of the caption. What am I doing wrong? TIA
This may seem like a stupid question, but how are you watching the project? Simply playing the slide (using F3 or pressing the play button in the timeline) won't show interactive objects working. Use:
F4 (to preview the whole project within Captivate)
F10 (to preview a certain number of slides in Captivate starting with the current one--default is 5 slides)
F12 (to preview as a swf in the web browser)
or... I think it's F11 that previews as html5 output in a browser, although I don't use Captivate 7 so I don't know for sure

How to create a hyperlink from text within a rollover caption
Hello,
I have a rollover caption that appears when the learner rolls
over a topic category (text caption). Within the contents the
rollover caption that appears I would like to provide an active
link to a website that is refered in specific rollover caption.
There are several rollover captions and associated hotshops, but
only ONE needs an active link.
Play control for the whole project is controlled by a NEXT
button, so the project is paused until it is clicked.
It doesn't seems like Captivate allows you to select text and
then link it - you have a set up a click box or button. I don't
understand how I could use these objects without them appearing all
the time. I only want the link to appear in ONE rollover caption.
Does anybody know how I might be able to acheive this
functionality?

Button/click box click more than once
Hi, I'm hoping you guys can point out what I'm doing wrong...
I have an image where the user can click on certain parts of
it to display a callout. However, I want them to be able to click
on the area of the image more than once if requried. I suppose you
can say it's a bit like an image map.
First I used click boxes to achieve this, then I tried using
transparent buttons. However for both of these methods you can only
click on each part once during playback. Clicking again does not
show the callout.
I thought about copying the contents to another slide and add
a 'Reset' button the user could click on. This would move to the
other slide, but this seems a bit on the 'clunky' side, so I
thought there must be a setting or something really obvious that I
have missed. I was unable to find the relevant informaiton in the
help file or elsewhere in the forum, so if it does exist I would
appreciate someone pointing me in the right direction.
How can I allow the user to click on parts of the image more
than once to show the callout?
Thanks for your help,
LizThanks for your reply Rick.
I started the activity using rollovers, but I wanted the user
to do something more definite than just hovering over each part of
the image. So essentially, I want the rollover functionality but
with the ability to click instead of just hovering the cursor over.
I thought this would be easy!
I've tried using both buttons and click boxes without any
success. I ventured a little into slidelets, but I want the callout
to appear in a very specific place and this did not appear to
satisfy my requirements. The 'click to stick' sounds intriguing so
I'll take a look into this, but I'm not convinced it's what I want.
Any more suggestions are most welcome.

Rollover slidelets and getting the "main" slide to persist
Hi,
I have a slide with a graphic of a user interface with several rollover slidelets on various UI elements. I have it set up that when the user clicks on an item, it jumps to another slide with some audio narration that explains the item, and displays some different video. How do I make that first slide (or any slide, actually) persist and just display indefinitely, without moving to the next slide? I can work around this by making all the slides have a really long display time, but there has to be a better way to do it.
Thanks! Thanks to you both. So, I started thinking about this some more, and tried your suggestion of using rollover captions and clickboxes. I had two problems--first, the clickboxes did not pause the slide progression, even though I had their properties set to do that. Second, after I finished adding all of my rollover captions and clickboxes, mysteriously they all stopped working completely. I can delete all of them from a slide and recreate one, and it works, so I'm wondering if I ran up against some upper limit or if maybe my project file has become corrupt.
Anyway, here's some more information about what I'm trying to do. In the pic below, number 1 indicates one of the items I'm adding a rollover caption and clickbox to. All of the items like this that appear in the left side are going to have clickboxes and rollover captions. When the user clicks one of these, the clickbox jumps to a different slide, which will show a different image in the right side, as well as a slightly different list of options in the left side (in some cases). Each slide has audio narration as well. All of this must be easily reproduceable in local language versions of this interface as well, for translation purposes, so I can't get too fancy in Captivate.
So what I've done is create all my rollover captions and clickboxes on the first slide, and then copy and paste them to each of the other slides (moving them as necessary on some slides when the sequence of the options changes). This way the user can always click or mouseover another hotspot from any slide and doesn't have to click a Return button. This seemed like it would work, but now none of the rollover captions or clickboxes are working. -
Change shape highlight / click box
Hi,
I am using Captivate (1) for a year now ... great program !!!
I just installed the demo version of Captivate (2) ... i was hoping
that one thing would be changed ... but it is still the same in
captivate 2...
The problem i have is this:
I'm making lessons for a 3D program. Most of the time the
user has to click a button ( 8-| ) and then he has to click on a 3D
item. Most of the time the 3D item is not placed in a horizontal
way -> so, to highlight it, i have to place a BIG SQUARE
Highlight (and click box) around it (wasting a lot of space, and it
makes it possible for the user -NOT- to click on the 3D item and
still be correct!).
Solution:
Could it be possible (maybe for Captivate 3 ???) to ROTATE
the square (highlight box or click box). Changing the shape of the
square box would even be better (so that my box would match the 3D
element..), but i think that this would be difficult for the
programmers... -> so if it would be possible to
rotate the box, it would be a REALLY BIG HELP...
So far i'm really impressed by the program, i'm a very happy
user!! I'm just trying out Captivate 2 and i like the improvements
so far... Thank you for this very good software!!!
Greetings, Seys Michiel (Sossa)
PS: i'm sorry if i mistyped something... english is not my

I think that this would be a great idea (and in fact is
something that I have already submitted as an enhancement request)
however the more people request this feature, the more chances we
have a getting it implemented. Therefore I would urge you to also
submit this as an enhancement request by

Can a rollover caption have two hotspots?
I'd like to create a rollover caption in which the user can rollover two discrete areas of the screen and see the same text appear. I don't want to manage the caption text for each independently so I'm hoping I can do this with one rollover. If it matters, what the user will have is several graphics they can rollover and a list of text. I want the corresponding graphic and text entry to share the same caption.
ThanksSorry. Rollover captions or rollover images have only one hotspot. You'll have to duplicate the rollover captions and move the hotspot for one of them.

Using Click Boxes and Rollover Slidelets on same frame issue
Hi all,
We are building a series of practice simulations, where the learner performs X steps to complete a software task. Each frame of the sim begins with a Task box that displays for a moment, then disappears. If the learner cannot remember the task, there is a Task button that has a rollover slidelet assigned to it, that when rolled over, displays the initial Task box. This all works fine. However, if the learner clicks on the rollover slidelet, rather than rolling over it, the click box on the page sees that as an attempt, and displays the Incorrect feedback box.
I have set the rollover slidelet properties to no action for both Onclick and OnRollover, and have placed the rollover slidelet to be on the top layer of the frame, but I cannot prevent the Click box from seeing when the learner clicks on the Rollover slidelet field.
Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Steve RJust to answer to something in your last sentence: even if each slide has a unique text, you could insert a user variable in the rollover text on the Master slide, and populate that variable on each slide with an On Enter action (command Assign). In this blog post I used such a work flow:

Audio Recording and Buttons / Click Boxes
Good morning!
I am just learning how to include audio in my Captivate
files. Here's my scenario. I'd like the user to be able to read the
information on a screen, then, click a button or a click box to
play the audio. I can record just fine, but, when I play back my
slide, the audio starts playing right away. I know I could move it
using the Timeline but it would be easier for the user to click
when they are ready to hear the audio portion of the screen. Is
there a way to do this?
Any help / information would be most appreciated.
HelenHi Helen,
You said...
quote:
I know I could move it using the Timeline but it would be easier
for the user to click when they are ready to hear the audio portion
of the screen. Is there a way to do this?
The best solution would probably be the one you've
said you don't want to use - if I understand you - that is, to
pause each slide after the caption is displayed (with Fade-In set,
that would be after one-half second) and push back the audio on the
timeline until after that. You would need a click-box or button set
to "Continue" when clicked (to continue on the timeline to hear the
audio) and another set to "Jumpto" the next slide for those who
don't want to hear the audio.
But wouldn't it be easier on everyone if you just set the
audio to play normally and allow the user to click the "mute" if
they don't want to hear it? I am probably missing the point of
having (silent) audio ... (??) The combination (permutation) of
audio and text can be used a variety of ways, so there is certainly
nothing wrong with your idea but I'm just looking for an easy way,
I guess. Have you given any thought to going the other way, with
audio constantly available and text available as closed
captioning?? Just throwing out gremlins now for what they might be
worth . . .
