Combining single Indesign files to make one file

Rather than using the "book" feature in Indesign CS2, I combine single Indesign files into one large (editable) Indesign file this way:
1. Create a NEW Indesign file and SAVE as a new name
2. Open my first existing Indesign file
3. Minimize both files and resize so they are side by side
4. Bring up the PAGES pallette on the first file you want to place
5. In the PAGES pallette, highlight (click on) page 1, hold down shift and click on the last page. This should select all pages.
6. Click and hold, drag these pages to the NEW file.
7. Open each file you wish to include, and repeat the process in the order you would like, until all files are added.
8. I keep the individual files rather than deleting (in this case it is a yearbook which individual students will be working on the following year). The only problem with this is to make sure if last-minute revisions are made to the final (all-inclusive) Indesign file, the same changes need to be made to the individual files.
The main reason I do it this way instead of creating a PDF using the book feature, is for purposes of automatic page numbering within the Indesign file, as well as having the final project in one editable Indesign file.

So, you're combining all the files at the end just for the sake of page numbering (page numbering that you can do in the book files anyway), and you keep the separate files for future revision? Seems incredibly inefficient to me and offers no advantages.

  • Combining single song files to one album

I had a couple CD's I wanted to add to my iPad, so I first imported them to itunes on my laptop. Later I connected my iPad to the laptop, syncing it up, but for the album "My Dark Twisted Fantasy", all songs that had a featured artist were split into a different album. Anyway to combine all the single songs together into the original album, for the visual sake of my itunes?

  • How to manage multiple articles in a single InDesign file ?

    Hello all !
Sorry if this seems stupid (it does to me) but I'm new and can't find this info in the ressources.
I have designed a 24-page magazine in InDesign.
I've created an alternate layout for iPad (digital publication) and everything is in order.
But of course alle the magazine pages/articles are in the same InDesign file used to create the original print magazine.
How can I easily separate these article in another way than manually creating on InDesign document per article !?
Because if I create a folio and add the open InDesign document as an article, it has the whole 24 pages in it and doesn't let me select which page/article goes where.
Thanks for your precious help, I can't wait to have a first projet to distribute to our readers.

Okay so I have to create an alternate layout for each page/article ?
Currently I have all 24 pages (A4) for the print version and 24 pages in an alternate layout for the iPad version

  • Syncing Multiple Text Boxes in a Single Indesign File

In theory this problem seems rather simple and there should be a simple way to accomplish my task, but every search I've tried for syncing text only explains how to thread text boxes.
What I need to do is layout a template that is 4UP on the page. Currently, whenever I make any edits to my text I have to copy the change multiple times to reflect the change in each instance of my layout on the page.
What I'd like to do is sync all my textboxes so that any changes or updates will automatically be reflected in each instance of the layout. In the past I've accomplished this in Illustrator using symbols and instances a symbol, but I've yet to find a simlar method in Indesign.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

I guess I'm looking for more of a dynamic solution.
    Thanks for the help!

    Hi, Zach:
Thanks for the feedback. You shouldn't have to relink or update multiple changed cross-references in a document individually.
I did a test on my suggestion, because x-refs aren't supposed to break completely when source context is changed. I saw that I didn't caution you about deleting the cross-reference marker (AKA "Text Anchor"); when you create a cross-reference to source material, in the same or different documents, InDesign inserts a cross-reference marker at the beginning of the source paragraph. If it's not visible, enable Type > Show Hidden Characters. It looks like a colon character (:) in the layer's indicator color.
NOTE: InDesign uses the term "Destination" to describe the paragraph that a cross-reference pulls into the cursor position when you insert a cross-reference, and it uses the term "Source" to describe the pulled-in destination paragraph that's displayed at the position where the cross-reference is inserted. This usage derives from the terms used for InDesign hyperlinks, where it makes better sense. Depending on your pre-InDesign experience with cross-references in longhand, typewritten, or other computer applications, you may find it, as I do, counterintuitive. I think of "source" as what you pull in, "destination" as the place where you display what's pulled in, and "reference" as the thing that's pulled in. I also use the term "source document" to describe the document that contains the reference's source, and I use the term "container document" to describe the document that contains the reference (the stuff that's pulled in.)
So, when you change a cross-reference's source material in the source document, if you take care not to delete the cross-reference markers/text anchors that are created at the beginning of source paragraphs, the references in the container document's Hyperlinks/Cross-references panel display a yellow warning triangle for each changed source, and you can update them in one action.
Updating the changed cross-references can also be confusing: If no changed (yellow triangle) cross-references are selected in the Hyperlinks / Cross-References panel are selected (highlighted,) whether you use the Update cross-references button at the bottom of the Hyperlinks / Cross-References panel, or the Update Cross-Reference item on the Hyperlinks / Cross-References panel's flyout menu, ALL changed cross-references are updated. However, if one or more changed cross-references in the panel are selected, the update button or menu item updates only the selected references.
See if this helps simplify your operations.

  • How do I take one picture and combine it with another to make one?

I'm new at this but I want to take one picture and then another picture and combine them making it look like it all taken at the same time. Any help?

In Editor, go to the expert tab.
Open picture B, the one you wish to select something from to add to another picture.
Use one of the selection tools, e.g. selection brush, lasso tool, to select the object. You will see an outline ("marching ants") once the selection is complete
Go to Edit menu>copy to copy the selection to the clipboard
Open picture A, then go to Edit>paste
Use the move tool to position object from picture B.
In the layers palette you should see picture A as the background layer, and object B on a separate layer

  • Can't combine InDesign files to single PDF file

I'm using Windows XP, Acrobat 8 Professional, InDesign (CS3). Here is the problem: When trying to combine three InDesign files into one single PDF file with Acrobat 8, I get an error message saying something about expecting PDF default presents but get 'Standard'. I've gone into the InDesign files and set the presets to another setting but still get the same message. Quite confused as to how to fix this. Does anyone know, or is there another way of creating a single PDF of three separate Indesign files??

Try exporting the files from within InDesign as PDF and them combine them in Acrobat.

  • To compile more indesign files

    hi
    i need some information.
how to compile more individual indesign files as a single file?
i added the documents in a new book file but cannot compile them as a single indesign file.

    Nothing automated.
However, you can move pages from one InDesign file to another.
You do not mention which verison of InDesign your are using.
CS4, open your source and your desitination documents.
With your source document open, go to the page panel, select Move Pages from the panel menu, and define which page range to move, to whiich document, and which place in the page order.
You can do this with master pages as well. If your documents use the Master pages of the same name, but have different content, it would be in your interest to rename them before moving pages. Otherwise, be prepared to make changes after the pages are added.

  • Using an InCopy package with different versions of the same InDesign file

    Hi,
I head up the studio for a London based design agency. We are looking into using InCopy with one of our clients (who will be off-site). In particular this will be working on Annual Reports.
As an example the issue I am coming up against is the following:
So far I imagine that we would have our InDesign file and create an InCopy package of all the stories to send to our client. With the content size of these type of documents it may be several days before we receive anything back. In the time between it is inevitable that we will need to carry out design changes. With our current workflow this would involve saving a new version of the InDesign file. When we receive the original InCopy package back from our client we may be working on a version 1..2..3,etc of the InDdesign layout. BUT the InCopy package wants to link to the original file we made the InCopy package from. Is there a way to link the InCopy package into our new InDesign file.
    Many Thanks

You could try renaming the new file with the old name but I don't think
that's that's going to be a recipe for success.
Other than that, you're using a very dangerous workflow. Everything here
is designed to revolve around a single InDesign file with however many
    assignments or packages there are.

  • Joining multiple inDesign files into one, can you solve this?

OK so basically I work at a magazine, the creative's all work on separate spreads so all the inDesign files consist of between 1 and 10 pages then usually they are all spat out in there sets of PDF's and sent to the printers.
Now I want to do an online addition of the magazine with the new SWF export feature in inDesign CS4 but I'm wondering how can you easily compile all of the separate inDesign files into one so that it can spit out one single swf with all 200 pages with the page peel effect?
Is there even a way without a mass of work of manually adding all the pages into one file, that would be absolutely humongous? Anyone with any suggestions how to make this process the simplist and with the least amount of labout would be an absoulute legend, I have little time to spend on this which sucks so looking for the best and fastest possible way that we could do it each month.
    Cheers
    J

I migth have a kind of solution for you. I have made a solution named eDocBrowser. (I called it Magazine Browser in earlier threads here and couple of other forums). It´s a collection of files that you publish with you SWF-files you have exported from InDesign. With eDocBrowser, you can put several SWF-files together and end-user can use them almost as one single SWF. Heres little demo I made just few minutes ago.
    http://www.prepress.fi/eDocBrowser/
There are 3 SWF-files, all of them exported from InDesign. They are originally separate indd-files. When you reach last page of Document1, small arrow appears, and text "Jump to next file" and name of the next file too. You can go there also by using next-button at the bottom right corner, one that you use normaly to go next page. Same kind of arrow appears also when you are in first page of document 2 or 3 etc... with it you can go back to earlier documents last page etc... All the documents can be seen also in a drop-down menu at top of the screen. Labels of that menu are customizable.
Theres also a zoom. When you clic zoom+ button, your cursor changes to magnifying glass. With zoom- you can go back to normal view.
Additional features are FullScreen-view, Printing current spread and customizing user interface, buttons and logo at the top-left corner. Text search is very exprerimental and requires indd-file indexing with script we have made too. It indexes every single word in indd-document to XML-file and put pagenumbers there too. eDocBrowser searches that XML-file and gives all the hits to small result window. Hits are also links to page where they point...Search is not in use with this demo..
There is a small help-section in top-right corner...
We also have a script called eDocMaker. It does everything for you. You just have to have indd-files in one folder. Script asks location of that folder when you run it. It also askes you which resolution you want to use with images, anything goes between 72-2400 (72ppi is indesign´s default resolution for SWF-export, using bigger resolution might cause bigger SWF-files, but images look better when zoomed)
Price of the single licence of eDocBrowser will be 80euros (aprx. 100dollars). With it you may install one copy of eDocBrowser into your server and use as many SWF-files there as you want. There is no search feature in single version.
Price of unlimited licence is 300euros (aprx.400dollars) With it you may install as many copies of eDocBrowser as you like. With it you also get all the indesign scripts including eDocMaker with resolution booster, search indexer etc. + goodies like user interface and button templates, indesign effect (3D spine graphic etc)....
Product is about ready, we are just setting up a place to sell it. Now it seems that we are going to use a service called payloadz.com....

  • Can I combine multipe .swf files into one?

Hello. I'm testing InDesign CS4 and it's ability to export a layout to a .swf file for viewing as a digital edition. I'd like to export multiple layouts and combine them into a single .swf file which can be read together. Is this possible, or would I have to combine all the different InDesign layouts into one before exporting?

SWF files as I understand it aren't editable. You'd need to combine your layouts in InDesign ahead of time.
If you were exporting XFL files to open and edit in Flash, it's possible but there are technical issues. Each page becomes a single symbol, named by its page number. So if you have multiple XFLs to import into Flash, they will have the same names for the symbols. The current issue of InDesign Magazine (NOT a free download) has a article that goes into all this in detail.

  • Can we combine multiple excel files into one excel file using SSIS?

I have a bunch of excel files in a specified folder. I wanted to combine all the excel files into one excel file by adding additional tabs in one excel file. Can I do this using SSIS?
             OR
I know using macro we can combine multiple excel files. Can we run a excel macro in SSIS? Please help me.
Actually the complete package is this:
Step1: Using FTP task I'm downloading the bunch of excel files into a folder.
Step2: Above implementation is the second step that I have to do.

You can do it in two steps
    1. First get all data from excel sheets to a sql staging table. For that you need to use a looping logic as explained in below link (you dont required the additional logic used for checking file name etc in below example as you need all files). Also make
source as excel instead of flat file
    http://visakhm.blogspot.in/2012/05/package-to-implement-daily-processing.html
    2. Once you get the data onto a single table, use below to get it exported to multiple sheets within same excel destination file

  • How can I combine three completed projects with text & sound to make one single movie?

How can I combine three completed imovie 09 projects (They all have text & sound) to make one single movie? Thank you for any help you can give.

If they are three separate projects than you will have to export all three as video files. Then you can reimport them into a new event, join them together as if they are ordinary clips, and export that.

    Hi Flávia,
Adobe PDF Pack is an online subscription--it definitely allows you to combine several files into one PDF file. For more information about PDF Pack, see Reliably Create PDFs, Convert PDFs, & Merge PDFs Online | Adobe PDF Pack. If you don't have the full version of Acrobat, this is a great solution for combining PDF files.
However, if you're using Acrobat (not Adobe Reader), you combine files by following these steps:
Open a PDF file that you want to add pages to.
Click the Pages pane on the Tools panel (on the right side of the application).
Click Insert From File, and choose the file that you want to combine with the PDF that you opened in step 1.
Make any changes necessary in the Insert Pages dialog box--these settings determine where the new file will be inserted.
    Click OK.
Please let me know how it goes.
    Best,
    Sara

  • How do I import multiple Ai files into one Indesign File - whilst still keeping the Ai Files editable and up dateable for the one Indesign File?

    Hi All,
Im relatively new to Ai and Indesign, and have been doing Uni work over Christmas, and have a rather urgent question thats stressing me out.
I originally had many art boards in my ai file, but due to the number, I split these into single files to help my computer run better.
Now I want to organise them into one document to save. From searching online Indesign can import these and save as one file, yet automatically update if the original ai file is updated. I would like to do this but just don't know how to do this correctly?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Im using CC Ai and indesign.
    Thanks in advance
    Sam

Yes, effectively I would like to catalogue the files into one collection so i can save as one PDF and Print as one.:)
I know I could save each AI as a pdf them then merge the pdf's together in acrobat, but I have nearly 100 files so would feel more comfortable seeing them all together before print / saving.
My concern is that if I insert them in Ai, will the file resolution reduce? and will the ai still be editable and would it update the indesign file?
    Thanks for the quick reply
