Combo drive making funny sounds

When I place a DVD into the drive and it starts to spin, a terrible noise comes from the drive. Sounds like the whole iBook G4 is about to go up in flames
I have read some of the posts about the combo drives and not being able to read discs, well as of now mine reads discs but makes noise so any help on this matter would be great

  • Combo Drive making funny noises

My slot drive has been reading disks (both CDs and DVDs) fine, but whenever I insert a disk it makes a series of loud thunks, a few clicks and then a loud whir as the disk starts to spin. The whir continues the whole time the disk is in the drive. When I eject the disk it thunks some more, and I have to grab it right away, or it will get sucked right back in. However, there is no resistance when I pull it out.
My iBook is about 2 years old and the warranty has run out. I verified my permissions and reset the power manager, with no change. Does anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks so much,
    Elizabeth

I am having the same issue. Can anyone shed light on a solution? Or is a replacement in order?

  • Canon S120 making funny sounds when moving it around (in automatic mode)

    Hi everyone,
I have a little question for those owning the Canon S120.
I just bought it and I noticed that my camera is making funny sounds when I move it around. Those sounds seem to occur more often when I'm in the automatic mode.  If I don't move the camera, it doesn't make any sound, but as soon as I move it, it does a little "toc-toc" sound (hard to describe, it's like the camera is adjusting something automatically when it moves).  It seems to come from inside the camera and not from outside.  I have owned my Canon cameras before and this is the first time I notice that.
    Has anyone else noticed that?
If so, is it "normal" or have I received a defective unit?
    Thanks for your help!

Open the MBP.  Place it on a towel so you can slide it around easily and not scratch it.  Take a #00 Phillips driver and take the bottom cover off.  3 of the screws will be longer than the rest.  Inspect the interior for anything that may be loose.
The other option is to take it to an Apple store genius bar and have them do it.
    Ciao.

  • IMac hard drive making clicking sound (audio sample)

A couple of nights ago I realized my five year old iMac was making a sound I have never heard it make before. It is a scratching noise that I assume is coming from my internal hard drive (hard drive is stock, has never been replaced). It isn't a super loud noise, but it sounds like the noise some hard drives make when they are "searching" or "thinking". I'm wondering if my hard drive is beginning to fail, or if the problem could be something as simple as dust or dirt caught in the drive. An audio sample is in the link below, please help me diagnose my problem. Thanks!

When you ran SMART Utility, were any of the sensors out of range or close to it, although not enough to trip the health measure? Just wondering. I once replaced an older hard drive that was showing error rates above normal, even when the drive was still 'verified'.
Other than that, you've run several tests that would say the hardware is OK.  As GeekStacy said, new hard drive noises are typically not good. So I'd be sure you have a good backup regimen, and if the noises get yet louder or more noticeable, you can either run these various tests again or replace the hard drive.

  • CD / DVD drive making funny noises....

Not the most tech savvy of posts I know, but when I insert a DVD disc into my drive, it just whirrrs, and clicks, and after about a minute, spits it out.
    Any ideas??
    Thanks
    MArk

The drive is making funny noises because it's trying to read the disk. If it can't read the disk, it will spit it back out. Try wiping the disk from the center out with a cloth to remove any fingerprints. Hope this helps!

  • Optical Drive making horrible sounds upon boot!

I have a black Macbook, and my Optical Drive is making horrible sounds when I boot. Now, I'm not sure if it's the Optical Drive or the HDD, but it's coming from the upper right-hand corner.
If this helps, I dropped it earlier today and I could have damaged it. I know the difference between the way it normally sounds when it boots and this. This kind of sounds like when you're inserting a CD into the Optical Drive, but far worse? The sound also happens when you press the Eject button.
Please help me, I need to know if I should bring it into an Apple Store immediately.

I have a mcabook 13 inch (white, not black LOL) that does the same thing. It was used by a guy at my work (it is a work laptop) and when he returned it to me (I am the IT guy) it wouldnt boot up. Warranty fixed this, but the grind is still there. This is the same guy who destroyed the screen on his PC laptop by dropping it down some stairs. So no doubt he has dropped this mac, which I have decided will stay in my personal care
Have you had any info on the issue?

  • 17in Macbook pro making funny sound.

I have a 4 month old macbook pro and when I move it at any time sometimes it will make a funny tinking sound. It sounds like it is coming from the upper left hand side of the keyboard. If anyone has any ideas I would really appreciate it. It doesnt seem like it is phasing its performance at all but I figured id catch it before it got worse or something happened.

It's strange that they did repairs that are apparently unrelated to the reason you brought it in-I wonder if they ran a hardware test or if a work order got mixed up. This sounds more like a repair for something else.
At any rate, you can try a SMC reset to see if that fixes the keyboard or sleep problem:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1411?viewlocale=en_US
You could also try running SMART Utility to see if it sees any hard drive problems:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/systemdiskutilities/smartutility.html
You can download the demo and run it several times for free.
However, if you hear the tink when the machine is turned off, it sounds like some sort of mechanical issue rather than something specifically associated with hard drive failure. Possibly it is just some characteristic of the machine itself and not indicative of anything. If so, the AASP should have been able to tell why it was doing that and explained it to you.
Might not hurt to run the extended version of the AHT just to check out the repairs and make sure all is really well with it.
    Good luck!

  • Mail Making Funny Sounds

    Really frustrating...
My mail keeps making the sent sound every 30 ish mins. When I've not sent an e-mail for over an hour....
I also randomly get the new mail sound aswell.
This causes me to go over to my mail icon and open mail on my screen (previously hidden).
Normally it may take several seconds for the sound to display after the icon says "1" or visa versa, so I open mail.
Wait for a few seconds and then nothing.
I go onto the webmail and still nothing, all my other e-mails that I'm sending from different computers are being received instantly and the icon and sounds are playing within 2/3 seconds of being received (acceptable.)
    This is really confusing me.
Does anyone know of anyway, I can clear a "mail cache" ? Yet not loost my messages?
    TIA
    Dan Walters

  • Optical Drive makes funny sound?

I have Toast 10 loaded on my macbook, which I sometimes use to load .dmg's (as in to MOUNT a CD)
however I've noticed ever since I started doing this whenever my macbook starts up OR wakes up from sleep the optical drive make a "whirring" sound, the same sound as when I start up the App Toast, almost as if its NOW looking for optical media (to burn or otherwise) whether its there or not...
Is this sound not a good thing?

I found THIS...heres what some folks had to say about a self test, I think Toast instigates this self test and now it does it all the time...
These folks said not to worry...?

  • Possessed Combo Drive

Yesterday I put my Macbook to sleep by closing the lid. After I verified that it did infact go to sleep (LED indicator blinked on and off slowly), I went to sleep. However, through out the night I got woken up by my combo drive making noises (like when u boot up the macbook or when u insert/eject a cd). After a few minutes of making noises it would stop but would repeat itself every couple of hours. Finally got fed up and did a PRAM reset and the issue seems to have stopped. Im just testing it again right now. Just wondering what would cause this and if anyone else had this happen to them?

PRAM reset didn't resolve the issue. Im suspecting it could be due to my Bluetooth mouse. However, it never was a problem before and my mouse is no where near where it can be accidently touched (it happened multiple times). Will try turning off Bluetooth mouse and test again. Anybody with ideas of what else can be causing this?

  • Combo drive is making a funny noise

i have a tray-loading combo drive on my ibook, its reading and burning cd's just fine but when i go to eject it makes a funny beeping noise and won't eject the cd.

It sounds like a problem with the drive itself, since the disc image leaves your desktop as it should.
It looks like you're going to need a new optical drive.
You can find your closest Apple Authorized Service Provider with this page:
    http://www.apple.com/buy/locator/service.html
Or check your local Yellow Pages for service technicians that work on Macs to call around and compare prices.

  • Macbook making a funny sound

my macbook makes a funny sound - like a screeching

It usually happens when I have worked on it for awhile and it is sitting idle. It is not so much a screeching but a like a groaning sound.

  • Combo Drive growling at me!

My white 200 MHz is making soft but noticeable whirring noises every ten seconds or so. They sound like Frankenstein rousing himself from slumber. Mrrrr rrrr! They shouldn't bother me but I know they will very shortly become intolerable. Happening to anybody else? Is there something I should be doing?
Otherwise the drive seems functional. I've read and burned both DVDs and CDs with it. It refused to read a couple CDs I put in, but so had my TiBook's slot loading drive occasionally. And I see that there's a firmware upgrade on the way to address that issue. But will it stanch the moaning? M.
    MacBook 200/60   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

It sounds to me like you are experiencing what is often referred to as the "mooing" issue. If this is the case, it is not coming from the combo drive, but instead from the system fan. Does the sound ever occur without a disc in the drive?
The mooing occurs because the on/off temps for the fan are too close together and thus constantly trigger the on / off cycling of the fans. This raming up and ramping down process of the fans creates the "mooing" sound. It will likely be fixed by a future firmware upgrade, but Apple has yet to acknowledge the problem, so there are no guarantees.

  • What causes CD's played in combo drive through iTunes to skip?

When I play an audio CD in my eMac combo drive through iTunes, just about every disc I play skips? When I play them on my home stereo CD player or my DVD player in audio mode they all play fine. What could be causing this?

    Hey Matt,
Some of my CD's have slight surface flaws, but the oversampling by the combo drive should take care of that. It does in my video DVD-in-audio-mode player and in my home stereo CD player which does 4x oversampling.
Songs in iTunes do not skip. The skipping is also not the "Max Headroom" type of digital stuh-tuh-tuh-tuttering. It is more like the audio intermittently cutting in and out.
I did some more troubleshooting and discovered that part of the problem was a loose connector. The 3.5mm plug from my external speaker system was not making good contact with the audio out port on my Mac.
The other part of the problem I discovered was that in one of the CD's I was listening to the recording has a sampled vinyl LP in it. The original LP had slightly audible surface scratches on it, and the original analog tape studio recording had dropouts in it. It just sounds real different when played on my Mac through my Klipsch speakers. Here's to that old audio engineering trick where the recording studio mixdown is done through Yamaha studio monitors with the idea that if the engineer can make Yamaha studio monitors sound good, the recording will sound good on everything else. The audio engineer on the Cinematic Orchestra CD titled Every Day apparently didn't use Yamaha nearfield studio monitors
After jiggling the audio connector, Genesis' Selling England by the Pound sounds fantastic once again. Thanks for your input, it helped point me in the right direction. I'll also try cleaning the contacts on my Mac's audio out port with some contact cleaner.
    Thanks,
    John
