Combo drive not pulling disks in: feels like something is in

I have this problem its about my combo drive, it doesn't take disk in any more. The mechanism that pulls the cd in is no longer working. cds wont go in when inserted more than 1/2 of the cd. I cant push the cd in any further, it feels like there is something in side blocking. The last time the drive worked was a few months back. I ejected a cdrw from the drive. the cdrw was damaged. the metallic layer on the disk came off. since than the drive will not accept disks.

Hopefully it's not seriously damaged.
Keeping my fingers crossed.

  • IBook G4 Combo Drive Not Recognized / Freezes

    Hello all,
    I have a problem with my iBook G4 1.25ghz
I have erased and reinstalled the OSX do to a hdd error, something about the tree. I dont remember now.
It will intermittently freeze during boot, if I hit the case above the hdd it will unfreeze and continue loading. When the OSX loads (10.4.11) again will intermittently freeze (hit the case and it comes back to life)
It doesn't recognize the combo drive, I therefore cannot do a disc repair from Tigers OSX disc, nor can I load tech tools.
Tried re-seating the Ram, resetting everything PRAM, PMU, NVRAM and countless other suggestions that I have read.
Im kinda hoping its just a hdd and can replace that. Before I tear this thing down anyone have any suggestions? The combo drive not being recognized is throwing me for a loop.
    Thanks

Sound like there is directory damage. Try DiskWarrior

The Disk Utility app that comes with the Mac OS is cannot repair that type of error. That is directory damage. You need DiskWarrior.

  • CD stuck in combo drive – not mounted / not recognized, so cannot eject

A CD which had been recognized and could be played in iTunes was in the combo drive when I rebooted. After reboot the CD was not recognized/mounted, and was not visible in Finder, iTunes, or DiskUtility (therefore, it cannot be ejected).
I rebooted with the mouse button held down but nothing happened. Then I did drutil eject, trying it a few times in succession, but nothing happened.
At no time after the original reboot has there been the slightest clicking or whirring noise from the combo drive. Evidently the system 'thinks' the combo drive has no disk inside it.
I haven't tried to go into single-user mode to try to eject it from there. (Incidentally, I have conflicting methods on how to enter single-user mode – is it cmd-s or cmd-opt-o-f ?) Before I try that, my question is that given that I know a good CD is inside the combo drive, is there any command (in Terminal) that would make the system force it to mount?
    Thanks for any info.

    HI,
Before I try that, my question is that given that I know a good CD is inside the combo drive, is there any command (in Terminal) that would make the system force it to mount?
    Try the suggestion here: http://forums.macosxhints.com/archive/index.php/t-4446.html
To eject the CD. Try launching iTunes, then Quit iTunes then press the Eject key on your keyboard.

I was looking at a tanning website today and then I logged off and went to eat lunch.  When I came back, I got on Facebook and on the side were ads for tanning.  What do I do so that this won't happen?  I feel like something is wrong.  I have heard Macs don't get viruses, but I still have Norton Virus Protection.  What is this and how do I make it not do it again!
On another note, my trash can all of the sudden started asking for my password when I move something to it.  It is extremely annoying when I want to delete more than one thing.  Is there a way to make that not happen too?    Thank ya'll!

    1. Triple-click the line below to select it:
    ~/.Trash
    2. Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Show Info
from the contextual menu.* An Info dialog should open.
    3. The dialog should show "You can read and write" in the Sharing & Permissions section. If that's not what it shows, click the padlock icon in the lower right corner of the window and enter your password when prompted. Use the plus- and minus-sign buttons to give yourself Read & Write access and "everyone" No Access. Delete any other entries in the access list.
    4. In the General section, uncheck the box marked Locked if it's checked.
    5. From the action menu (gear icon) at the bottom of the dialog, select Apply to enclosed items and confirm.
    6. Close the Info window and test.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). Open a TextEdit window and paste into it (command-V). Select the line you just pasted and continue as above.

  • Combo Drive not working

My internal combo drive (tray) is not reading anything (i.e., DVDs, CDs, CD-Roms). It just acts as if nothing has been inserted. I have checked Disk Utility and only see my hard drive listed....
What are the initial steps to troubleshooting this problem?
    emac 1GHz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   17" imac (G4), 12" ibook

It sounds like the drive is dead. I don't think this will work, but it is worth a shot anyway. As JVMP said, shut everything down, but this time also unplug the power cord to the eMac so it is completely disconnected from power allowing the logic board to power completely down and reset. Leave it unplugged for a good 5 minutes so all on board capacitors discharge. Then plug back in and start up again.
Maybe, if we are lucky, something locked up and that IDE bus just needs resetting or something.

  • Z61e: Combo drive not found

I have a Z61e that had a bad (or so I thought) cd/dvd combo drive.  I have replaced the drive, and windows says it is working, but the file manager and my computer does not see anything if I put a cd in.  I can get it to read a DVD from Media player, but when I check the DVD with the file manager, it see nothing.  Other programs don't see the drive, although when I first replaced the drive, things were working fine.  It's almost as if Windows has "forgotten"that the drive is there.
Anybody know what I can do?

That's just what I ended up doing.  I don't know why this is a problem or why it's doing it.  I have Linux on an ancient Sony Vaio and it runs like a champ.  I'm beginning to hate Windows....

  • Combo Drive not recognized

My internal combo drive is not longer recognized by my Intel Mac mini. It does not show up in System Profiler under Disc Burning. Instead I have a message that says: "No burning device was found."
Incidentally there is an audio CD in the drive, which I cannot eject. Holding down the mouse button on startup has no effect. Resetting the SMC has no effect. When I startup with the Option key held down, I can hear the disc spin up very briefly immediately, but there is at least a 2 minute delay before the internal drive shows up as a startup option.
I connected a Firewire optical drive, which works, but DVD Player and FrontRow refuse to work to play DVDs and quit with errors. (I can play DVDs with VLC, however.)
Does anyone have any suggestions for something to try before I take it in for repairs? Thanks!!
    Robert

    Thanks for the link.
I tried restarting using Command-Option-O-F, even though this was said not to work on Intel computers. I'm not sure if there was any cause-effect, but this time the CD mounted on the desktop and the optical drive is now showing up in System Profiler, and I was able to eject the disk.
This may be some kind of intermittent hardware or software problem. I have my fingers crossed that it doesn't crop up too often.

  • Combo drive ejecting all disks

The combo drive in my macbook is unable to read any disks, either cd or dvd, burned or commercial. It won't even read the system install cds. It will attempt to read the disk for about 10 seconds and then eject it. This only happened recently, the drive has always worked fine before. Does anyone know of anything I can try to fix it, or will I just have to get it replaced? The warranty just expired a couple of months ago, so I'd like to avoid this if possible. Thanks for any help.

See if any of this helps. Trouble shooting slot load drives.

  • Combo Drive Not Reading Install DVD

I just purchased OS X (10.4) to upgrade from OS X (10.2.x). When I put the install DVD in the combo drive I received a dialog box telling me I’ve inserted a blank DVD and what would I like to do with it. Movie DVDs work fine as well as all music CDs.
    Any thoughts?

    CJH9,
So much so that Apple offers a "Tiger Media Exchange?" For $10.00 MORE dollars, Apple will exchange the Install DVD for Install CDs.
This Media Exchange Program on here has always been recommended to people who have "supported" machines with no DVD drive. While I see no reason you couldn't use it for a drive whose DVD booting capability has been compromised.
However, since I don't work for Apple, I don't hazard to guess Apple's policy on the matter. I might add, Norton Utilities may have ruined your machines ability to boot from all the media it normally could have, because it might have caused damaged to your BootX file on the hard disk which controls its ability to boot from the internal optical drive. I've seen similar problems with booting Jaguar and Panther disks after someone inadvertantly caused their entire hard drive's permissions to become 777 with Batchmod. This naturally gave the wrong permissions to the BootX file and made it impossible to boot off the internal drive. Only booting from an external optical drive let them reinstall the operating system.
My suggestion is to backup your data (if you can't backup your data because it has become inaccessible use Data Rescue and an external Firewire hard drive to recover information), then repair the directory with Disk Utility, and/or Alsoft Disk Warrior, and make sure the permissions are good by repairing permissions from Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility. If that doesn't fix the issue boot off the 10.2 installer CD and erase the internal with a zero format, and then try installing Tiger. You could connect the machine using Target Disk Mode to your other machine to get some of this work done:
    http://www.info.apple.com/kbnum/n58583
Those are several work arounds this issue with the BootX which it sounds like you have gotten into. Hopefully one of these works for you.

  • Ibook g3 combo drive not working

I have a 500 mhz  Ibook G3  with a non working combo drive. I went and replaced it with a new combo drive. The new combo drive didn't work either, so I dug deeper. When I checked out the "about this Mac" drop down , I saw that the combo drive doesn't appear at all. I also cannot eject/open the CD drawer. If I manually open the drive I can't get a disc to play or even spin. So I an assuming that it is a power to the drive issue. Any ideas? Do I need a new ribbon cable or is it a software thing? I'm running 10.4.11.
    Thanks
    Tom

You may have gotten another drive that was faulty.
I don't think it's the cable because the iBook G3 uses a single cable for the hard drive and the optical drive, using a Master/Slave configuration. So if your hard drive is working, the optical drive should work, too, unless it's not connected properly.
Did you use iFixit's guide to install it?
It sounds like hardware, not software.

  • Lite-On Combo Drive not detected

Allo, I'm using a K7N2 Delta MS-6570 for my motherboard and I've been having some minor problems with combo drives. I had the same problem with a memorex drive and now with a lite-on drive. DVD-ROM/CD-RW. When I turn on or restart the computer windows doesn't see the drive. If I open My Computer it shows my floppy drive and hard drives but not my combo drive. This is fixed by running the Add Hardware Wizard. I open the Add Hardware Wizard and click next, it does it's little auto-search and goes to a screen that says "Have you already connected the hardware to the computer?" indicating it found no new hardware on the machine, however my combo drive pops into place on My Computer during this search and then works perfectly until next time I reboot and need to run the Add Hardware Wizard again. Not that big of a deal as it only takes 10 seconds, but I'd prefer not to have to do it every time I turn on the computer. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thanks

  • Hard drive not in disk utility will not boot up

Went to turn on MacBook pro and got file with question mark.  Installed boot disk went to disk utility and hard drive not there to repair.  Any help would be appreciated.

Try OWC - they specialize in Mac accessories and have some very good internal hard drives. Sounds as if you need a new one.

  • Combo drive not working correctly AppleCare Question

If I decide to take the system to my Genius Bar will Labor part of replacing the current drive with a superdrive be covered by my AppleCare Plan? Also is there anyway for me to know the price of a superdrive at the Stamford CT Apple Store?

if your combo drive has suffered a manufacturers defect then your combo drive would be covered if you are within your applecare coverage period. There are no upgrades.

  • Combo-Drive not reading Discs

Hello, earlier today i was importing songs from a cd-r to iTunes. During the import, my computer froze and wouldn't respond so i restarted it. When i restarted the computer and logged on the disc that i left in wasn't appearing on the desktop. I put in several other discs including a dvd, cd-r, and a lens cleaner but none of them were read. When insert them the drive doesn't even make a noise and the disc isn't moved at all when i eject them. Is this a software issue or do i need to replace my combo-drive?

  • Combo drive spits out disks! Ptoooey!

I too am having an issue with my drive. No CD or DVD will mount. It does not matter if it is a blank disk, music or data CD. I will put in a disk (many different brands/speeds tested) and the Mac thinks for a few seconds, then just spits it out. I have read through a bunch of the threads here dealing with the same or similar problems. I am starting to think that one of those updates I downloaded from Apple screwed something up. This was not happening before the last updates were released...
I did not see a fix for this in any of the threads.
Hey, Apple! There's obviously a problem with the eMac. How about fixing it?! >:(

I don't have any kids, and I don't stick anything in my superdrive except discs, but I have the exact same problem. Just got an American Gangster DVD from Netflix, and the macbook sounds like it's trying to read it 3 times, then ejects it. This happens with lots of different discs I get. I called Apple support, and they had me press a combination of keys, reboot, etc. That's a lot harder than playing the disc on my girlfriend's Windows laptop, which plays any disc I put into it -- even if it looks like someone placed it on concrete and then danced on top of it. Apple superdrive, you are junk. Why did I pay so much for this thing when a Windows laptop is $600?
