Combo drive only reads DVDs and burned discs!

OK, so I had to wipe my harddrive and reinstall (restore) OSX 10.3 Panther.
After doing that the Combo drive does not mount any "factory" CD's.
It can mount the CD's I burned before the reinstall. It can mount DVD movies, but all program CD's & DVD's do not mount.
I have an external firewire DVD burner that mounts all these discs so the discs are not the problem.
The combo drive can read some CDs and DVDs so the optics are not shot, but the system decides not to mount!

You may want to try resetting the PMU. I had this exact same problem once where my '12 PowerBook G4 wouldn't recognize my iLife '05 DVD-ROM. Resetting the PMU caused it to be able to mount the DVD-ROM again. Here's a link to the Apple Knowledge Base Article with instructions for how to reset the PMU: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449.

It's probable that the CD 'side' of the combo drive has failed.  That you cannot boot from the recovery CD is pretty much proof of the failure.

  • Drive can read DVDs and CDs but WON'T Right

Hi can anyone help with this.
When I put a blank CD or DVD in the drive I get the "This Disc Cannot Be Used Because It Is Not Recognized" message.
But the drive does read discs well.
iDVD has not been able to burn a DVD for a while and in the last few days I can't even burn a CD.
I thought It was the drive, so I replaced it and got the same message!!
So is this a software problem?
And can anyone give me a clue to fixing it?
    Thanks in advance?

LARRY I have a similar problem. Here is the Info. My son just got back from South Africa with a lot of
pictures on a DVD so I downloaded them onto My MacPro 2.8 single and then burned 3 Memorix DVD+R's for my Son and Daughter. I put one of them on a new DVD player I have hooked up to the TV
and it came up fine. My Daughter took it to work and put it on a computer at work and it would not come up. She brought it back home and I tried it on a new small DVD player I have and it would not come up. I had a friend burn the DVD on his window's Machine and it still would not come up for my Daughter. It came up on the small DVD player. The DVD in my MacPro is a Pioneer DVD-RW DVR 112D. My friend gave me a new Taiyoyuden DVD and it would not even come up on My machine.
So far I have not had any problems burning Music CD's or CD's with pictures on them. Help!!!

  • Satellite A60-302: CD drive read DVDs and CDs but not burned discs

I have a Toshiba laptop: Satellite A60-302 and I have a problem with the cd drive. It can read dvds and discs that I buy but it wont read all burned discs (even ones that I burned with the laptops own burner). Only from time to time it will read a burned disc.
I have tried cleaning the cd drives laser eye but it didnt help.
Does anyone know what the problem might be?

    Hi
This sounds like the CD burner doesnt burn CD properly.
You have suggested that you have used different kinds of CDs.
In the user manual you will find a list of compatible medias.
These medias was tested and should works properly.
But if this happens with all CDs so possibly the drive cannot works properly and only a replacement could solve this issue.

Try removing the CD/DVD Filters from the Registry.
When CD/DVD related software is installed (such as iTunes, Nero, virtual CD software), they install filters into the registry, which can cause compatibility problems.
    1) Run Regedit (Start -> Run -> Regedit)
    2) Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
    3) In the right pane, delete the "UpperFilters" key, and delete the "LowerFilters" key.
    4) Reboot.
If your CD/DVD programs stop working, you will need to reinstall them (preferably with an updated version).
This utility can remove the filters for you:

Running a mid 2009 iMac on 10.7.5, 3 gb memory, 320 gb hd.
Suddenly the computer stoped reading DVDs and the only time I can read a CD is if I restart.  Quite often when I insert a CD it gets stuck and I cannot get it out until I restart and it shows up on the desktop where I can then eject it.
I have checked and double checked the finder prefs and all looks normal showing a check mark on CDs,DVDs etc. (the ones I want to show up on the desktop)
I have reset the PEAM, repaired permissions with both the disk utility on the computer and the disk utility when I start up in the Recovery Disk.  I did notice that sometimes the permission repeat the same correction several times before it moves on, and sometimes it doesn’t. I have Windows installed on a partition but I keep it unmounted until it is needed for my wife’s work.  The dock seems to be just fine and all the apps seems to run just fine.  When I insert a photo CD iPhoto does not open but when I insert a music CD iTunes does open.
Also, most every time I open iPhoto it takes a long time(sometimes as long as 2 minutes) for it to load.
Sometimes my Mail (Mail 5.3) does not post new mail but most of the time it does.
Once and a while it seems like the computer slows way down but then it seems ok ten minutes later.
All  of these ‘things’ seemed to have happen suddenly and I have not downloaded anything from the internet in some time.
Of course the warranty and extended warranty are both no longer in effect having had this computer for more than three years.
I am running Java and Adobe Player because some of the sites I go to a lot require both.

I believe that insufficient RAM may be the source of some of your problems. If you have a RAM of somewhere 4 to 8GB, you will experience smoother computing. 3GB doesn't seem right, so you might want to learn more by going to this site:
    http://www.crucial.com/store/drammemory.aspx
I don't know what know what's happening with your optical drive, but it seems you use your drive quite a bit. In that case, look into a lens cleaner for your machine. It's inexpensive, works quite well.
I hope you'll post here with your results!

  • Combo Drive rejecting some DVDs

My system: Mac Mini Core 2 Duo with Combo Drive.
Some DVDs have been working fine. I have checked around 10 or so earlier today which worked fine, although in a few cases I did hear particularly loud sounds coming from the drive, which I'm not used to hearing from an otherwise relatively quiet drive.
But I've just encountered a disk which the Mac ejects immediately. That isn't always the case -- sometimes it doesn't eject it, and it shows up as a blank recordable CD (yes, a CD. Go figure.) Just now I tried the same disk again, and this time it shows up in Finder as a DVD but DVD Player still refuses to play it. Which of these behaviours I get seems to be purely chance, more often than not it just gets ejected straight away.
I initially thought it might be a bad disk but on testing all subsequent disks from the same series, the same occurs. Interestingly the first of the four has no problems, and plays through as expected.
I have tested the same disks against my MacBook Pro, and verified that they not only play, but that there is no issue accessing any of the data on the disk -- I can copy the contents to a folder with no problems at all. Move the disk back to the Mini and bam, rejected again.
Just now (to gather more information, check more stuff) I put the first disk back in again and that worked as expected again. And now the second disk is recognised as what it is by Finder, although the DVD Player still claims it's an unsupported disk (go figure...)
Anyway I wanted to know if this behaviour had been seen by any other Combo Drive owners in the past, whether this commonly happens with certain DVDs, or whether it's a problem with the particular drive in my unit in which case I will get it fixed.
Or maybe the disks are faulty in some way which the MacBook Pro is more tolerant with? :-/

If you are within reach of an Apple store, call there and make an appointment at the genius bar. Free support for all, whether in or out of warranty.
whether it's possible to upgrade to a SuperDrive
If your system doesn't have one, it's certainly possible to replace the internal with a superdrive, but to be honest I would not advise it. Having Apple do this would be expensive, though there are bare drives for the user to upgrade themselves at OWC (http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/mac-mini/superdrive/) amongst other places. However, these slot-loading burners are rather more fussy than external devices have tended to be, so it may be a better bet to simply add a Firewire external (http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/VLFWU2D112/ for example)
Given your system is new, however, I'd have Apple check out the combo drive first anyway, but add an external DVD burner if in any doubt.

BenB it creates a disc image only and it's not in .m2v. I think it saved it as an Apple Pro Res 422 format instead. The disc image file format will not allow

Hi Albos, This is a known problem. These superdrives die after a while. See the various threads on this site and the internet. I have the same problem with my Imac 20" 2.16 ghz. Just wants to burn and read cd's. Its has to do with the laser. For DVD an CD are two different laser and the one for DVD's has probably died in yours (as it did in mine). I bought an external LG burner and problem solved. (And a lot cheaper than replacing the superdrive)
    Hope this helps you.

    Hi
    a. You are using Cheap media as Memorex, NoName etc DVDs - I only use Verbatim
    b. You use a DL-DVD or DVD+/-RW type of media - Old Macs can not use DL-DVDs - I only use DVD-R
    c. Your DVD-burner needs a cleaning - Cleaning DVD without liquid but the brush type
    d. Is there OK free space on Your Start-Up (Macintosh HD) hard disk - I never go less than 25Gb free.
    e. Can You describe the material used to create Your DVD
    - Video Codec/s
    - Photo file formats
    - Audio file formats
iDVD can not use all but only a few of them - still it tries and then often fails
    Just to start by.

  • IMac G4 superdrive only reads DVDs after leopard install, not CDs-- HELP

I just installed leopard on my iMac G4 and now it only reads DVDs. It will not read CDs. I tried installing iLife and Office from CDs and it does not read them. However, it will play all DVDs just fine. Leopard itself seems to work amazing, only problem so far is the CD issue.
Has anyone else experienced this? Does anyone know how to fix this? I would really like to be able to read CDs as well. Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

Same thing here. Superdrive keeps behaving erratically since Leopard upgrade. Doesn't burn DVDs (some error message saying it doesn't recognize the media). Managed to burn a CD only after full PMU reset but doesn't read CDs anymore (burnt a blank CD on a iMac at work and my mini says the CD is blank). Reads movie rental DVDs ok though (but I don't care, I just want it to work).
Same sort of thing happened to me last year whilst running Tiger. Apple changed the Superdrive. That very model of Superdrive is a piece of rubbish and it looks like Apple will have to change it again. Very glad I tool the 3-year Applecare warranty.
So much for the "it just works", hey?.

ok... so I unplugged it for a couple minutes. Then, booted it back up holding commandoption+pr to refresh the PRAM. This seemed to work when the CD is in the drive. It will read whatever CD is in the Drive. But, if I eject it and then try to reinsert it, it doesn't work anymore. I don't know what is wrong. Do you think that the battery needs to be replaced or something? Can anyone help me?????

I have also done a clean install form an upgrade disc to on a new drive and it still works.
