Combo Drive Problem: Not Accepting Discs

Recently, I swapped out a broken Matshita drive.
The new slot-loading optical drive will not accept discs.
What confounds me is that the drive (seems to) show up in the System Profiler:
MATSHITA CD-RW CW-8124:
Firmware Revision: DZ13
Interconnect: ATAPI
Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipped/Supported)
Cache: 2048 KB
Reads DVD: Yes
CD-Write: -R, -RW
Burn Underrun Protection CD: Yes
Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw
Media: No
If it is a power connection issue, would the device appear in the System Profiler?
Anyone have a theory?

John,
I agree with JeremyP, it sounds like your combo drive has serious problems & needs to be replaced. My guess is misaligned laser. If you live near an Apple Store, take it there to have one of the geniuses look at it. I had to have mine replaced when it rejected more DVDs than it accepted. It's refusal to accept CDs was probably not far off.

  • Combo drive is not accepting discs

I have an iMac with 3.2Ghz Intel Cor i3.  Software is version 10.6.8
I go to put in a disc (any type) and it stops where it usually pulls it in the rest of the way and there is resistance.  When I first did it the disc went in but came right back out.  It didnt seem to go in as far as usual before spitting out.  After that it wont go in at all.
I have tried DVD movies, application dics (aperture) and regular CD's and same response.
I tried the eject button on the keayboard but no reponse and I am pretty sure there is no other disc in there.
Any help would really be appreciated.  Packing this thing up and taking it to a mall is not a fun project.
    Thanks

Maybe there is a CD or DVD stuck in the drive, first try:
    1. Restart the Mac holding down the mouse or trackpad button as the system boots.
    2. Open Disk Utility, select the CD/DVD in the sidebar and click the blue Eject icon.
    3. Launch the Terminal and type the following command:   drutil eject
Now then if a CD or DVD pops out, try a different one to see if the drive is working.
If not, reset the PRAM as per > Resetting your Mac's PRAM and try again.
Now if it is still not working, go to > Apple - Support - Mac mini - Service FAQ

  • My cd/dvd drive will not accept discs

Last night I was burning some music to a disc from itunes... the first disc worked fine, then on the second I received an error message and now ever since the drive will not accept a disc (I can pop it in and it makes some noise and then kicks it out) and ideas

hftvhftv, greetings;  Not at all.  One can utilize a lens cleaning DVD, shoot some compressed air in the slot or wrap a fine microfiber cloth (eye glass cleaning cloth)  around a stiff piece of paper or thin plastic and insert it gently inside the slot.  All of these techniques have had success in the past.

  • Combo drive does not accept any disc anymore

    Hello,
I tried to read a normal DVD with my ComboDrive on my 12" G4. The G4 keeps the disc for about 3 - 4 seconds, then it ecjects all discs again. It is not able to mount them, but it also does not seem that the drive does very much. Any idea what the problem could be? The drive worked just fine a couple of days ago.
    Regards

Is it related to a few specific CD's? Some CDs are burned incorrectly or in a way the Mac PB cannot read. They may spin really fast in the drive and make all sorts of strange noises before they eject.
Sometimes taking the same disc and just pushing a bit harder when inserting it will make it work. Sometimes not.
Probably not much you can do but a Genious appointment is always a good place to start, just to be sure.

  • Driver does not accept DVD

    Hello,
    I have a MacBook Pro 10.8.5.
The driver does not accept any CD/DVD.
The Apple Diagnostics did not detect any hardware issue.
Any suggestions how to solve this instead of buying a new disk for $250!?!?!
The computer is less than 2 years old, so it is early for replacing parts.
    Thanks

My Titanium G4 has just started doing the same thing. Inserting any disc spins up the drive in fits and starts but eventually all discs are ejected. Load the same discs in an external LaCie firewire DVD drive and they show up and behave as normal.
I suspected the 10.4.11 update and went back down to 10.4.10 but no change.
And if I boot it up in OS 9 it does the same thing.
The upshot is I don't know if it is faulty, dirty or what. I very rarely use it anyway. I have always, where possible, used an external drive just so the internal one lasts as long as possible.

  • IBook G4 Combo Drive Does Not Read CD's - But Reads DVD's

Since about a week ago, my combo drive has not been able to read any audio or data CD's. However, it remains able to read and play DVD's. When I insert a CD into the drive, it would either automatically eject itself, or remain in the drive without being recognized by the system. After inserting a CD, I can hear the drive making noises indicating that it's trying to read the disk.
If anyone has encountered this problem, how can it be resolved?
    Thanks.

I had 8 CD-RW disks backing up iTunes and wanted to update them so I erased them to start over. Afterwards when I tried to use them each and every one was useless-my iBook was telling me they were unreadable. I Googled this problem for quite some time without finding a solution. People were actually replacing their optical drives. Anyway I found my own solution, figuring that the combo-drive was ok since it was reading all my DVDs and other CD-RWs. I opened BurnX, popped in the unreadable CD, but before the warning box came up I clicked on erase to erase the already erased CD. This prevented the warning box from coming up and the CD ejecting. Next I burned a small file onto the CD-just any old file-actually a short TextEdit document, then I erased that. Also I made sure that the CD was not apendable. It worked! I then did the same with all the other CDs that were unreadable after having erased the iTunes backup from them and was ready. I began the backup procedure and was afraid that it was going to tell me what I had forgotten to mention earlier, that the disk was not blank when I knew it was, but it didn't and they all worked fine. The backup was a success and I had found the answer to a problem that apparently many people have had over the years. Hope this helps.

  • Combo Drive Problem - Won't Accept Disks

My combo drive has recently developed a problem where it will not accept any disks that I insert into it. Instead of pulling the disk in, it just sits there. If I push it in a little further, it kind of springs back out. I have not had problems before. Any ideas? Is there a diagnostic program that could check the drive?
    Thanks in advance!

  • CD/DVD drive won't accept discs?

I'm trying to play a DVD in my disc drive. I have an HP Pavilion slimline, model should not matter because it is just an issue with playing discs. It has the Vertical disc drive.
So I have the small DVDs that go in video cameras. There is clearly a small round circle that will accept them. I have played these types in computers with the horizontal drive. My issue is with this being a vertical drive and a smaller disc, it will not stay in the tray.
So should I not be bothering because it won't take these discs or is there some sort of adapter I need to make it stay?

Some drives have a lip or tab to help hold the smaller DVD's in place for the vertical operation.  Apparently that one does not.  The only solution that seems to be using an external DVD drives that lays horizontal.

  • Macbook Pro not accepting discs

    Hi all!
I have a problem today with my Macbook Pro...
It will not accept any discs. I can push the disc in almost all the way and it doesn't grab them as it should. I can hear a series of very faint clicks - but that's it!
I tried resetting SMC - and drutil eject internal in Terminal - no difference.
Is there anythign else I can try?
    Thanks!

There is definitely nothing in the drive - and I very rarely use it...

  • Optical drive problem - ejects any disc

    Hi everybody,
I have 4 years old white MacBook and I have problem with cd drive - it ejects any disc right after I put one in. It doesn't seem that it's trying to read it, the disc is just ejected after few seconds. I don't know if it is software or hardware problem (but I'm afraid it's hardware). Can anybody help me?
    Thanks
    Natalia

I have same problem with my iMac but not fixed it yet. I ran a hardware check (hold down D during start up) and this did report a fault but it made no sense to me. Worth a try. Other forums suggested create a new user account and see if applies to that user. i did this too and at first the new user would accept discs but now it will not.
    Cheers

  • Combo Drive problem

I installed Leopard the hard way, using firewire target disc mode, but it's on. The reason is the original combo drive wouldn't recognize the Leopard install disc. It has trouble recognizing any DVD. CD's are fine for the most part. Now the weird part, Disc util and the system profiler always recognize the drive. Even with media in the drive, the software will recognize it, but might not recognize the media in the drive. I've read plenty of posts here with similar symptoms, what gives? I realize 10.5 is the last roundup for the Power PC processor, but other software besides system software is installed using optical media. Should I replace the drive? Is there a software solution I'm missing? Totally confused.

I'm curious why there are so many messages here with MDD Macs and the super/combo drives appear to be conking out.
Besides being old and outdated, they're really isn't a mystery as to why "so many" posts are made.
The drives have reached end of service.... they're worn out. Drives are not meant to last forever.
That, combined with the fact that media has improved in speed, quality, and changed in construction, makes for a drive, based on old standards of media, that cannot handle the newer media.
And, the majority of those posts are most quickly resolved with the new replacement drive.
In some cases, the problem is resolved by simply cleaning the lens (with a $15+ kit), or by locating a problem in the OS, which can be tested in a new user account. With complete troubleshooting, a small % are found to be OS problems. Many of these, however, require OS reinstall. Kind of hard to do with a drive that isn't working well with the system (or vice-versa).
Bottom line, is, there isn't much to be gained buy keeping an old 4x drive, when a new 20x drive, that has better media compatibility and is so much faster, is so cheap.
And, as you said, a functioning optical drive is necessary. So, which path- troubleshooting, or, replacement?

  • DVD stuck in Combo drive, OSX not locating eject device.

hello, I recently encountered a problem with my powerbook G4 combo Drive. It simply ejected discs autonomously, as many others on this forum has experienced. But then, after I tried resetting PRAM and all the other start-up eject-rituals recommended on the trouble-shooting page, I decided to try using my lens-cleaning CD. It has a little tiny brush, and because of the random nature of my problem, I thought it could be a dusty lens.
I threw it in, it whirled with a nasty tick-tick-tick sound, as if the brush was hitting something?! and I immediatly ejected it. I tried to insert a random DVD I had been watching quite recently (so I could be sure that the disc I used was ok), but it said the exact same sounds.. but only this time, it just Won't eject At all!
I went over all the above mentioned procedures on Apple's website, but when I'm in Firmware, and I'm prompted to write 'eject cd', it says : Firmware not able to locate eject device. And futhermore, OSX doesn't even list my Matsushita drive in the ATA-menu under Hardware profile.
If not some of you have a solution, I think I will have to go and pay the price of a new one at my local store.. but it's bitter money after 2 years of faithful service
    Thanks in advance!

  • Combo drive problem on Pismo

My Pismo has a Sony CRX820E combo drive, and quite often, while the computer is up and running, the drive decides not to open and won't work until I restart the machine. This can be a pain if I get something done and want to burn it to disc - to put the disc in and get the drive to respond I need to restart.
Of course, I can `open' the drawer with a paperclip, but the drive won't work until I restart. When it works, it's all fine!
Is it just a matter of resetting something?
I've checked for possible drive driver updates but I think everything is in order there.

    Alex,
    Welcome to the Discussions.
If this behavior is intermittent, I would think it is a hardware problem.
Can you return functionality to the drive by removing the optical drive, then reinserting it while the 'book is running? These media bay devices are hot-swappable.
Or can you return functionality by sleeping the 'book, then waking?
I cannot recall if the 820E needs the "solder-fix" for full functionality. Will the drive boot a CD by pressing the 'c' key? Does the powerbook freeze when waking from sleep? These are two symptoms of an optical drive that is set to slave or cable-select.
